[Q] I cant get permroot can someone please help ??? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok people I'm pathetic.... I rooted using visionary installed titanium backup pro, astro, terminal emulator. I downloaded the root.rar files and put them onto the sd card. Unhooked my phone opened terminal typed su+enter but when I tried the sec command it wouldn't work I then went back into astro and h_boot and wpx are white in color and when I press on one of them it says file type ko not found. Can someone please please help me!!!! Do I have to have adb installed in order for the root.rar files to be found . Thank u very m much in advance. And if this is not the correct place to post this at let me know and I will move it thank u

Check out mackesters channel on YouTube he's got a good tutorial

Hey, you probably done all this... But thought I'd give a crack at it...
When trying to root using visionary
Quickly check these:
-did you have fastboot from >settings>applications turned off?
-was Set system r/w after root from visionary app checked?
-Temproot first
-Attempt permroot next
-Phone should reboot and you should see Super User app in the drawer.
Then follow the instructions here
If you wish to use root explorer to push the gfree file to /data/local you can do so too, its easier than adb commands.
Hope this helps. Good luck man.

Please post questions in the Q&A section.

Use root file explorer not Astro, check my signature. Also you said you downloaded the root.rar and placed it on sd, did you unzip it first?

Fastboot was off rw on. I don't know if I unzipped root.rar or not all I did was download it right click on it extracted to F drive moved to sd and in terminal is said not found our something when I entered the sec command.i did a factory reset so I'm starting fresh. What did I do wrong ? Thank u awesome people in advance

You sure you put the right file? Coz there are two gfree files...

This depends on the thread your following, he is referring to ULTIMATE S OFF
And extract is the same thing as unzip.

I guess I used the right one but it says ko file not found or sh file not found etc so I don't know what I'm doing wrong its driving me insane it shouldn't be this hard. Thanks for everyone help I'm still trying and will not give up lol

Are you doing this in the phone or thru a pc via adb? If adb also copy the files from root.rar to sdk/tools then adb will see them

Did any of you have usb debugging check?
i promise its not a user error. i can root and unroot one phone and my new one WILL NOT root. i had already unrooted my phone to be returned and rooted it back in less than a min. but my new one will not root no matter what i try...
i feel dumb for taking so long to look at this method but this worked like a charm for me guys.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
if you just want s-off do these steps (from the link only simplified for s-off only which is all i cared about)
this uses adb so if you want you can try the method explained right after step 4 that uses only the phone.
Make sure you have visionary installed on your device. (If you were already permarooted w/s=off ignore this step.)
Download this file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?s7afymwe2wb3x60
md5sum: b73c56ca0e21664c5756d4ad295063c5
1. Now unzip the file into your SDK tools directory. (just put the files that are in the zip right into the tools folder that is in your sdk folder)
2. Plug your device into your computer. (have debugging on!)
3. Now go to your sdk folder and while holding shift down right click on the tools folder. Select open command window here. If you are in linux (ubuntu) right mouse click on your SDK tools folder, choose actions, and choose open command window(or whatever it's called). Otherwise, open a command prompt and cd your way to your SDK tools directory.
4. Type "adb push gfree /data/local" and hit enter.
Optionally, for those without sdk knowledge you could dl the file to your phone use androzip or something like it to unzip the file and then use root explorer to move the file named gfree to /data/local. Not the gfree.h file. All the other files are source code inlcuded for the gnu license. This would skip the first 4 steps.
5. Now unplug your device from the computer.
6. Run visionary to gain temp root.
7. Open terminal emulator on your device, type "su", and hit enter to gain root privileges.
8. Type "cd /data/local" and hit enter.
9. Now type "chmod 777 gfree" and hit enter to make the program executable.
10. Type "./gfree -f" and hit enter.
11. now to turn security off and set super CID the command is "./gfree --secu_flag off --cid 11111111" + enter.
reboot and s should be off again all credit to the link above this is just a simplified version for people like us who just want s-off. this is what i did and worked great. look at the thread for a list of things you can do with gfree like simlock off etc.

any luck? i tried to simplify it as much as possible for those of you just starting out...
Just one question, the section about downloading the file directly to the device, it says copy to /data/local, the local directory doesnt exist. Do I create that dir? I may have to sdk from my windows machine. Sorry for tbe trouble.

[Q] The Unlockr.com

have any of you guys tried the unlockr.coms method of perm rooting?? I used it for my g2 and it worked but idk if it will work like a charm with the mt4g..also do we have to use visionary r14 or a different version because the link it gives us is visionary r14
Same as it was originally done though G2 then MT4G was developed. You can use it with ease nothing to worry about.

Im sorry for any stupid/ noob questions, but in your honest opinion aside from having root access and being able to remove pre installed apps, what are the other benefits from going thru the root process?
You can overclock (make phone faster) also set cpu profiles to make phone cpu to run at lowest mhz to save battery. install customs romsthat have better customization and also have the newest android software before anyone else. .

Rooting a MT4G will not remove any applications. Swype is pre-installed, and will stay that way. The only way to "lose" Swype is to flash a ROM that does not include it. In that case, you can go to the Swype website and download it directly by signing up for the beta.
oh ok thx guys. Using this method i after i reboot the phone i keep getting S-On. what could i be doing wrong?

I get this far
1. On your phone, go to Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure USB Debugging is ON (it MUST be ON) and make sure Fastboot is checked OFF (if it exists in your settings, otherwise don’t worry about it).
2.Download Visionary from here
3. Plug in your phone via USB cable and mount the sd card so we can transfer files to it.
4.Copy the Visionary .apk file to the root of your phone’s memory card (NOT in any folder just on the sd card itself).
5. Then simply open any file manager app on your phone (like Linda File Manager for free from the Market for example) find the visionary apk file in the file manager and click it and follow the prompts to install it.
Click to collapse
When I open the file manager app (i tried Linda and OI File Manager) the file isn't there.
I know I did everything, I tried several times, but nothing. Any advice?

If the file isn't there, I can imagine only three possibilities. Choose one. These are the only reasonable possibilities, but as we're not psychic, you'll have to figure out which it might be of these three.
You did not transfer the file to the SD card at all.
You transferred it to the wrong directory on the SD card .
You're looking for it in the wrong directory.
Could it be something else? Sure. Perhaps you renamed the file. Perhaps you switched SD cards.... but if you're using the same SD card, and you did not rename the file, then one of those three are the likely candidate.
Here's the info I know from what I've done in regards to these options (I'm going to try again tonight though)
1. You did not transfer the file to the SD card at all.
My computer can see the file on the lettered drive, (the USB port it's plugged into) there is no other address info in the address bar other than the lettered drive
2. You transferred it to the wrong directory on the SD card .
Again, same as above
3. You're looking for it in the wrong directory.
In the file explorer on the phone the address in the directory is just /
again I'm going to try tonight but maybe this info can clear it up. I'm learning a lot about these things and how they work so thanks for all the help!

unLockr
II. Flash the S-OFF Hboot Image and Gain Perm Root
1. Download the rooting files:
* T-Mobile MyTouch 4G / HTC Glacier S-OFF/Rooting Files
2. Extract the files somewhere to your computer.
3. Plug your phone in via USB cable and mount the SD card so we can transfer files to it.
4. Copy the entire root folder from inside the extracted folder from step 2 to the root of your sd card on your phone (NOT in any folders, just on the SD card itself).
5. Unplug the phone.
6. Go to the Market on your phone and download/install Android Terminal Emulator (free).
4. Open the Terminal Emulator app and type the following with hitting enter at the end of each line (to get the touch screen keyboard to come up hit the menu button then toggle soft keyboard):
su
cd /sdcard/root
sh root.sh
5. Now, wait for it to finish.
6. After that is done, reboot the phone. When it boots back up, turn it off and back on holding down Volume Down and Power until the HBoot screen comes up. Confirm it says S-OFF at the top. If so, you have S-OFF.
i do steps 1-5 but when i get to step 6 and reboot my phone while holding volume down i have S-ON and not off! any ideas what i can be doing wrong. btw i did the temp root b4 trying this.

take everything that is in exploits.zip and move it to your android sdk directory specifically the location of adb.exe (will either be in platform-tools or tools) as for the two RUUs, they can be anywhere but you will have to move them at one point to your SD card. That is about it

CM7 / AOSP Boot sound [working]

Another user asked for this, and I helped him through it, so I decided to post it here so everyone can have access to it. I didn't create the file, just came across it one day being bored..I digress.
Credit to barnacles10 and lithid-cm
*NOTE: Anything in brackets is either description of what is happening or an action you need to perform; don't type in anything in brackets*
What you need to do to get a boot sound on CM7/AOSP is the following.
1. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/bootsnd.sh Apparently some people had issues with the first link, so I uploaded it again. Download that file, place on your sdcard.
2. Take whatever sound you want and rename it to: android_audio.mp3 [needs to be mp3 format] and then place in your adb tools folder.
3. On your phone, open terminal emulator, and type in the following:
su [enter]
cd /sdcard [enter]
ls [to list all files, you should see bootsnd.sh]
sh bootsnd.sh [enter]
You won't see a confirmation, or message, it just runs, and returns you to a # sign.
From your computer, adb push the android_audio.mp3 to the /system/media folder, reboot, and you'll have a sound.
If you don't like / know how to use adb, using root explorer and placing the android_audio.mp3 in the system/media folder works just as well. Reboot, and enjoy your boot sound.
*NOTE*
If you flash / change roms, you'll have to re-run the process to enable the boot sound again. If you get tired of it / don't want it, you can use root explorer and delete the file.
Alternate method:
For those that don't like using the terminal emulator, you can do it via adb:
navigate to your adb folder via commanda prompt, then issue the following commands:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /sdcard
ls [will list files, you should see bootsnd.sh]
sh bootsnd.sh
Like in the emulator, you will be returned with a # sign. Then place the audio file in the folder I specified. Just decided like posting an alt method. Enjoy.

The file should save as a .sh. If it doesn't show up as .sh when you are saving it, save it as all file types, and that should work as well.
If you double click it, it should prompt you with the "no program found...do you want to...blah blah" And it should show bootsound.sh

Well AOSP roms [i.e CM7] wasn't designed to have boot souns, so it probably won't be integrated [my speculation].
And if you ever want to "thank" anyone, at the bottom of every post, you'll see a "thanks" button, and then you have "thanked" them, and the user can see it.

ls [to list all files, you should see bootsnd.sh]
sh bootsnd.sh [enter]
You won't see a confirmation, or message, it just runs, and returns you to a # sign.
From your computer, adb push the android_audio.mp3 to the /system/media folder, reboot, and you'll have a sound.
If you don't like / know how to use adb, using root explorer and placing the android_audio.mp3 in the system/media folder works just as well. Reboot, and enjoy your boot sound.
*NOTE*
If you flash / change roms, you'll have to re-run the process to enable the boot sound again. If you get tired of it / don't want it, you can use root explorer and delete the file.

Ok just tried this without using adb as I think its million times better to just use a ftp app and get this done in seconds. But I dont know why its not working. I check the name to make sure I wasnt putting in the .mp3 twice and for some reason it wont play the file. And its in MP3 format.
I had some that wouldn't play for some reason too. Try a different mp3 file and see id it work. If not did u get the bootsnd file placed on the root of sd card and pushed the file with adb. Or my preferred method terminal emulator.

Or tell me what steps udid do.

Really well I actually tried the audio from the driod just to see but I try a couple more. Yeah the problem with using those they are more timely and both USB ports are beyond ****ed right lol. But I should just be able to do this over FTP. Was there anything similar to the ones that worked to the ones that did.

It's been a while. HELP!!

Okay guys first off sorry if there's a thread for this but XDA has become so over crowded and full of comments it's just to much to read through and try to remember. But anyway
Can anyone point me in the right direction or simply explain real quick how to properly root the T-Mobile variant. I'm running full stock (Obviously) I'm on H91810j and would like to debloat a little and use greenify. Any help is appreciated.

There is literally speaking a thread dedicated just for the sake of rooting and twrp lol. Here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/h918-recowvery-unlock-v20-root-shell-t3490594
It should take about 3 to 5 minutes to complete the whole process if you know what you are doing. If you are a noob it might take sometime to figure out were to go from one step to another
Also, just remember, there is a search function on the v20 section's main screen. You can always use keywords and the function will search what you are looking for (if someone has posted something related to That). As French prople says... "Bon chance|"
P.s: yes. The rooting method by jcadduono works for 10j

Oh. The adb i used was from a pixel thread... The one posted in the rooting thread seems to either be missing a file called lib.... Something i forgot the name lol; or they did open and close immediately like it happened to you.

Right click run as administrator? Yes I have. Still can't get this to work. I'm using WinRar idk if that's the culprit or not. It's always been reliable.
Here, use this.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
Best for noobs.
It it asks about system wide say yes.
Then hit Windows key and R and type cmd. Then run your commands. The installer should also work.

Wait. I forgot to tell you. You cant double click the files. The files can be accessed only by using cmd. (command promt). So, extract the files into a folder, and use cd or pushd in dorect it to the directory where the files are. That is the proper way.

For starter... Whats the directory where you downloaded and extracted adb fastboot? Assuming you are using the file i sent you. Was it on the downloads directory? If so open cmd (not in administratibe mode) and type pushd Downloads . Then ise all the start the adb server by using adb start-server to recognize your device. Or if you want to even see if your device is even present type adb devices

You could use the desktop but it is more troublesome to type the directory. Thats why i suggest to put it on the downloads folder and asked you to not start the cmd as administrative. Because when you dont start it as administrative, cmd will start right from the users folder and then is only a matter of writting pushd Downloads. Focus on the first part first. Otherwise you will go nowhere lol.

Okay I got into the download folder using cmd (pushd download) i tried doing adb and hitting enter after and it brought up a bunch of lines after that. I did adb devices and it shows my phone but when I do fastboot oem unlock it just hangs at waiting for devices. USB debugging is on and so is OEM unlock.

but are you in fastboot mode now? because after you have done the OEM unlock and then after that use usb debbugging then accept the prompt it shows about giving authorization to your computer, then after that you must go to fastboot mode to start the process of root
