{Q} I am starting to think its my girl - Epic 4G General

Hey guys Im a EVo user and my girl has an Epic.
Now the next statement is with either running stock or a custom rom
Her phones slows way down and reboot its required, wifi is odd sometimes a reboot to connect, and today her battery became rather hot over 100 F.
Is there anything I can try out on her phone?

Sounds like a specific phone harware issue, i dont get overheats or slow downs, no matter how many apps are running at the same time and even if i charge and use mobile ap all the time, still no overheats here.
Ive Done this on both stock and custom roms and no overheats or slow down..

darn, thankyou for a reply, guess I'll update her ROM and start her off fresh

I don't get slow downs either. I leave my wifi on all day and don't have issues connecting. I only overheated once. Shortly after I got my phone I was downloading stuff left and right, playing graphics heavy games like radio ball, and trying to charge my nearly dead battery all at the same time. When I got the overheat message I figured it was a sign that I needed to turn the phone off and walk away for a little while.
Either the phone has a problem, or your girl does. (which were pretty much your choices to begin with)

Yep no issue at all here usually always on wifi and I'm a heavy user. I get no slow down or anything and I'm on stock rom with bloatware removed.

My phone does slow down after about 2-3 days of uptime. I'm 100% stock, not rooted. Reboot resolves the issues.
After @ 2-3 day uptime the following happens:
1. I've had issues when rotating between home screens where all my widgets & icons disappear, then come back to normal.
2. Also, sometimes my swiping isn't recognized when trying to cycle home screens.
It's difficult to reproduce on demand, thus making my case to Sprint for replacement even more difficult. So I said screw it, just hoping 2.2.1 will resolve the problems whenever its rolled out OTA.

You may be right. I would get a different girlfriend and see if the overheating/rebooting problem continues. If it stops, we know where the problem was. If the problems continue with the new girlfriend, it may be you.

Anyone's phone getting hot?

Hey guys, I have had the EVO since the Google I/O conference and this is the second time this has happened to me. The phone is in my pocket and starts to get warm, to the point where I'm like "why the hell is my pocket warm?" This happened before my phone was rooted and happened after. I'm assuming it is an app, but I don't know what causes it. I did perform a master reset on it both times after it started to get warm and that does resolve it.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?
Got a google i\o phone and have never had it get hot.
Mine hasn't had the problem.

next time check spare parts and see what's running
maybe something is constantly streaming internet and you don't even know
maybe you accidentally left wifi tether on both times, i know my Hero gets hot when i run that for long periods of time.
just a suggestion.
My old Hermes use to do that sometimes. Havent ever noticed my EVO hot.
Thanks guys, I know nothing is running at the time. I tried taskiller to correct the issue and it didn't help. It gets really hot and than the battery starts draining like crazy. I called HTC before the EVO launched and explained that to someone and he said that's a known issue but I have a feeling he was just saying that.
I have had the HD, HD2 & now the Evo. Every HTC phone that I have had has done this. I have to say though, that I never experienced battery drain any more than usual with this. I'm not sure what causes it, but I think it is just a HTC thing.
My phone gets hot at times, but I know I have twitter updating and other stuff running in the background with Wifi and 3G connections at times, so perhaps that's the suspect.
Good for the winter time I suppose!
yea i jus got my EVO today and yea mine one is hot all the time.im using advanced task killer, turned off 4g,gps, and live wallpeper.also using launcer 2 with youtube widget auto update.my first android phone.

If you are rooted, use AutoKiller or Auto Memory Manager. Don't use a task killer.
I experienced that this weekend.
The only thing i correlated to it was that i had wifi on and was not in my 1 memorized wifi network?
it happened twice in a short period of time, but nothing that really concerned me. I'm more worried about the top half of my screen being unresponsive to touch for 5 to 20 seconds at a time randomyl throughout the day.
have you noticed any lackluster touchscreen response?
R
Yes if I am using it for internet.
mine does when I am charging it.
sorry but this is my first android phone and i jus wanted to know if i can put third party APK app files without root and would i need another app to install the apk files to the sd card?thanks
Yes, for example I plugged into USB in my car, streaming Slacker radio via blue tooth, and it gets warm.
My Evo doesn't feel hot at all, and I've had it running for four hours since it arrived today.

Rapidly losing patience w/ my Vibrant

I got my first Vibrant on launch day with high hopes. Two weeks later I had a new one due the phone freezing EVERY time I opened Google Maps. I've held on to this one now waiting for a GPS fix and JI6 worked great for me....for about the first week. Now its just as bad as ever.
I get an initial fix much quicker, but after about five minutes it loses GPS signal completely and indefinitely. In the past week my phone has begun freezing AGAIN, including three times today alone. Two of the times I would go to unlock my phone and nothing would happen. The screen would remain off, softkeys wouldn't light up, and a long press on the power button does nothing. I have to pull the battery out and reboot.
This is incredibly frustrating because this phone takes nearly 5 minutes to boot (never actually timed it but I have to imagine somewhere close to that). So its a long wait before I can do what I intended to do. I did notice that Shopsavvy was sucking on the GPS signal when I rebooted the phone so perhaps that's what was secretly crashing it (Needless to say, ShopSavvy got the boot after the second freeze).
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the Maps updates w/ no change. I would bring the phone back but T-Mo doesn't have any other phones I want. My Touch 4G is hideous and I don't want another QWERTY like the G2.
So did I just end up with another dud Vibrant or is there a fix? Would rooting fix my problems? This phone has never been rooted or hacked in any way.
Any ideas???
Short answer: Yes.
Short but longer answer: At least install a LagFix. I got back and forth between stock JI6 and Fusion 1.1 a lot. JI6 with a custom kernel and LagFix is butter. Fusion is even better.
You may have a dud though. I haven't had that many problems except for things I did myself.

I did not know what a real smartphone was supposed to be until I rooted and custom rom(ed) it.
For the first 3 months I had the phone... I was reluctant to root. But ofcourse... It was just another phone... laggy and slow...
Until I rooted and installed Bionix. Now its smooth as butter.
Good things in life are always free. I paid for a suffocated phone... xda developers free services released and refreshed my phone.
Well
I would install Fusion 1.1 with the Core kernel from Sombionix and see if that fixes it. Stock is totally unacceptable.
If it stills sucks, its likely a dud.
You must either be getting dud phones, or you're installing some app that's messing them up(?) I'm stock/unrooted, and very happy. Not that I doubt the happy results reported by folx like those above, but I don't have bothersome "lag" or freezing etc. -- no issues that even tempt me to ROM-swap (I wouldn't have kept the phone if I weren't satisfied w/it stock).
My GPS did used to lose signal as you report; haven't given it a good comparison test since JI6 update.
Well I've rooted using OCLF and also applied the lag fix. No change.
I still find the phone dead 2-3 times a day with no warning. I'll go to wake it up and nothing happens.
Some of you think installing a new ROM with help? How can I do that? The one time I tried using ODIN, it was never able to identify my phone.
Ugh, why can't this POS just work.

Did you make sure you had the Samsung USB Driver for the Vibrant? If you don't Odin won't recognize your phone. Also important to have a newer version of Odin. Like I have 1.7. And last as Odin is a little troublesome, you should have Odin up and running before you connect your phone. Read the Bible in the Dev section for links.
1) Could be a dud, it happens
2) When I first got my Vibrant, it boots up so fast. Its because there are hardly any apps installed that as part of the boot up process, go and check on. I think it has to do with the cache, because once you load it up with apps, the time it takes to get to the home screen is noticeably longer.
Also ShopSavvy is a bit wonky with the gps, so I disabled that setting in the app. But my though is you might have a bad app installed or something funky on the internal/sd memory that its fighting with. I'd say as something to just try for kicks, backup everything, copy memory to your pc, wipe the memory and do a factory reset(You could odin to stock, but you'll lose the Sims app). If things work, slowly add your apps back in.
As for gps, yes before the update it just wouldn't lock or would take forever, but still not be very accurate. After the update(but then also after alot of flashing different roms, then finally just going back to stock), gps works like a champ. But I would also point out that gps is vulnerable to several things. Don't place the phone near any large metal or magnetic object, this will throw the compass off. And always try to have a clear view of the sky, without being in a 'canyon' of buildings. The buildings distort the signal(which in the case of gps is just a signal that tells the time) and can throw off the reading(which is where the a in agps is supposed to come in).

[HELP] Screen Blackouts, Freezes, and Reboots

I have had a rooted epic for a few months now and have been experiencing a lot of software difficulties recently. I am using Epic Experience Froyo, but I have switched to other roms and still experience the problems (which I have researched but have yet to find a cure). I have times where the screen will turn black and unresponsive, yet the capacitive buttons at the bottom are still lit up, and it will either restart the phone at the lock screen and regain signal or I will have to manually take the battery out. Sometimes I get the same issue except the screen just freezes. Other times (even if the phone is idle in my pocket) it will randomly reboot and I can feel it vibrating in my pocket. I have done many full factory resets w/oden. Everytime I get the problem it seems to gradually get more severe.
I would love for any input to work towards a solution.
Thanks,
Dylan.
Sounds exactly like the problems I was experiencing with my Evo. Do you overclock your phone by any chance? Or have you ever installed lagfix applications?
I overclocked once for about 2 days @ 1.2ghz, but then reverted to regular. For a long time I had Juice Defender installed.

Ok, so as far as juice defender is concerned, what are its performance characteristics? Did you ever use quadrant to see what it was putting up? I doubt the overclock for such a short period of time is what would've caused so many problems, but from my experiences, any of these add ons that take your quadrant and almost double it are usually ones that can cause some permanent damage on the phone. I used to run what was called Snap Turbo which was a performance tweaking apk attached to a linked kernal that used to go well with CM6. Well, turbo mode does exactly what ViperSpeed lag fix does. As soon as I started messing around with the Snap Turbo, that's when my screen used to become unresponsive, phone used to freeze, and I would get random reboots almost 10x per day. After I started experiencing these issues, I could never revert back to another Rom or even go back to stock without getting the same issues. I ended up getting rid of that Evo and getting another. As soon as I rooted my next one, random reboots started but not as frequently. Basically, I believe that rooting your phone is going to cause SOME issues. Constantly messing around with it will result in A LOT of issues. It's almost unavoidable and some folks are lucky enough to never experience any issues, but that's the risk you take if you want all the benefits that come with hacking the phone. I hope you find a setup on your phone that isn't so unreliable but I doubt there's anything you can do to completely fix it. I hope I'm wrong, though, because anything you do to fix those issues would be a great help to us all if we end up in the same boat in the future...God forbid!
Juice Defender mainly just altered settings with the wireless connectivity (Like stopping it from using wireless network when the phone is idle). I've also thought about this... I am using 3 different batteries, 1 is default battery, and the other 2 are of a cheap $10 ebay set.
hey guys...i was getting great battery life on di18 and dk28 but for the last week its sucked i loss on average 8-10% an hour (setCPU at 200-1000 ondemand and 200-200 sreen off) i have calibrated my battery twice and still no luck as soon as i take it off the charger it drops to 95% any thing else i can try? thanks for the help

[Q] Phone very slow, hang, unresponsive

Sometimes my phone will get very unresponsive such that any action takes many seconds to show up, and everything is very choppy. Often I see this when I wake up in the morning, but it happens often enough in general. It's so bad that I can't shut it down normally because it would take over 10 min (I've actually never waited to see exactly how long it would take). Thankfully I just found out about the three finger reset (volume up, camera, power), so I shouldn't have to pull the battery anymore, but it's still a problem.
I don't remember this happening before using custom roms. It happens with both DK28 roms I've tried - Bonsai and Viper. I believe it also occurred on the 2.1 Epic Experience, although I'm not sure. I guess I should try flashing to DK28 stock to see if that works, but it's a pain to set up everything each time. I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone else has had this problem and found a way to fix it. Also, I have a feeling this could be related to WiFi being turned on, but can't confirm yet.
My phone was stuttering yesterday.
But that was only after installing smartbench and using theonscreen keyboard.
However, since I've upgraded to dk28, the phone does take (relatively) forever to shutdown.
It'll go black but the bottom lights would still be on and then like a minute or two later it vibrates and actually cuts off

When my phone does this, it reminds me that I like to have SeePU installed. It's pretty useful in pointing out the apps that are hogging CPU and most likely slowing down your phone.
For me it's often Touchdown, and I kill it and things are back to normal.
I have found a few things that are useful. When I need to reboot my phone I use quick boot from the market. Works every time. In between I use fast reboot also from the market. Try them and see how they work.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Thanks for the app suggestions. I like the taskbar icons for SeePU. It's always been useful on my Mac (stats from iStat). Quick Boot makes things easier as well.
Next time my phone hangs, I'll see if some process is taking 100% CPU.
The phone hung again, and it seemed like something was taking 100% CPU, if the taskbar SeePU icon is to be trusted. I wasn't able to figure out what the culprit was though, because the phone pretty much stopped responding. Otherwise I would have loaded Android System Info to check.
can the epic 4g run this lag fix? if not, do we have any other ways to fix the lag?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784691
edit: nvm
So I was able to view Android System Info while my phone was hanging, but it did now show any processes taking 100% CPU, although the total CPU usage was 100%. My guess then is that the Android 2.2 OS is buggy.
However, I did find people who said leaving USB debugging on would fix it, so I'm going to try that.
For reference:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=826507
http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-support-troubleshooting/244553-100-cpu.html#post2140890
My phone hasn't hung for a while, so apparently enabling USB debugging prevents the hang / lag / crash / 100% CPU. Weird but I'm glad it works
Now the only problem is kswapd0 eating CPU sometimes. I think this is caused by lack of memory, but I'm not sure what I can do about it.

Random Pandora Playing

Hi Everyone, I've owned my TF w/ dock for a few months now, and sometimes it just frustrates me...
I know i'm not alone on that one, but man it sure is dissapointing. Things are getting better with each honeycomb update, but we all paid quite a bit of money for this experiment.
Anyways, the latest issue i have is that Pandora will randomly start playing. As in, i used it on sunday for a few hours, and it randomly started monday morning some time. I didn't do anything to the tablet, besides have it on the charger over night, and it randomly started playing again this morning. I hadn't even opened it up in the time between. This time it woke my girlfriend up and she has to work tonight overnight.
Anyone else have this issue or something similar? Is it a random reboot? I really haven't opened it up so i haven't checked the status/runtime.
ugh. I'm really trying to like this thing and there things that i think are great, but some things that i didn't expect to be an issue are. Random pandora playing and a crappy browser are not things i expected...as well as docking station battery drain issues.
Ok, i just checked my system status and it's been up for over 171 hours, so no reboot. Any thoughts on what could be going on?
First of all, considering running on that many hours, I would suggest rebooting. Android is built on Linux and all PC platforms requires an occasional reboot. I would try uninstalling Pandora, reboot and then reinstall. Also, its goes without saying that when you buy a device when it first comes out, you are taking a risk of the increased possibility of faulty equipment as the manufacturer isn't aware of the faults yet.

i agree, give it a fresh boot and see if it helps

I know a reboot may be necessary from time to time. I generally do it with mobile devices when something starts to act up while i'm using it or it appears sluggish. This wasn't the case so i hadn't done it. The first time it had done it was probably after 5 days of being online. It just seemed odd that it decided to start playing while shut with the screen off. I will also make sure i quit the app before leaving it overnight.
It only did it while the unit was asleep and pandora was alive in the background. it didn't start up pandora and start playing.
Just because bugs can be expected, doesn't mean i can't be frustrated
True. Well the main benefit to rebooting is that it allows the system to purge and reallocate memory, which memory is usually the main culprit of alot if minor issues. Its possible that for whatever reason, when you exited the app, if it didn't fully clear all processes and services out of memory, for all intents and purposes, the app could still be running to an extent in the background, causing anomalies like such. Not saying that this explains your issue, but its plausible.
