Hello all,
I been googling and reading about rooting/flashing/roms for the past week. I managed to find lots of ANDROID guides, but this forum keeps reminding me that a generic guide != Galaxy Tab.
I read various of threads here, talking about that you can't simply flash another rom... if you have rom-X, you need to: A. flash rom-Z, then B. flash rom-Y ... afterwards flash rom-ABC ...
Who gives? how is it possible for a beginner to know which/what route of versions of roms he's supposed to take?
(The reason why I'm after using other/newer versions of android - is because that with my current one, FroYo 2.2, the 3rd party applications which suppose to route audio to the bluetooth earpiece fail. So I been told to try other versions...)

Hi Yeroslav,
Seems like you're new to custom romming and rooting. There are roms here in the development forums with "HALO" in their topic header. These are the roms that you may want.
Rooting and romming has it's risks (soft bricking/ hard bricking etc.) and puts you at risk of various problems unless you know how to solve them when they arise ( bootloop. network errors) , so maybe you want to google it before you begin anything. (We're all doing it, so it's low risk, unless you do something majorly wrong like flashing a rom for a different phone model)
Also, when referring to forums here, you first need to check your GS4 model if it's I9505 or I9500, commonly found when you first boot your phone. Once you've obtained the model number do look in the relevant forums (Android development/original android development) for rooting and custom romming methods. (As mentioned before, flashing roms for a different model can result in bricking, so do check your GS4 model before you start anything).
I'll keep this instructions brief (Just google what you don't know).
1. Get root by flashing rooted (stock?) roms through odin.
2. Get a custom recovery by flashing Clockworkmod(CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project(TWRP).
3. Find out how to use CWM/TWRP
*Check the forums and use the search feature to get your way around. Any kind XDA member would continue elaborating on my brief instructions, do go ahead.
Happy flashing!
Cheers.
Hello Everyone,
I'm in need of a little help, please point me in the right direction. I purchased a used Verizon Galaxy S4 with a custom ROM installed. I tried updating the phone from settings, but when installing the update i get a picture of a dead android character with an error. So I guess doing it that way on a custom ROM is a no go. My goal is just to update the phone to the newest stock rom. Do I need to flash? I'm not customed to dealing with flashing android roms, but I'm no slouch in the tech issues, I just need to know where to start.
I know I can google the issue, but theres a million guides, which is why the start process seems difficult.
I've attached a screenshot of the device information.
Thank you very kindly for your time.
First you need to go to the proper forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon
Just find a stock rom and flash it using Odin.
Thanks man!:good::good:
Hi Guys,
It's been while since I rooted my phone or did any serious mods on my phone ... was waiting for the warranty of my S4 to run out!
Now that, that's over can you guys guide me on the following ....
(PS. Am Using the S4 (Indian latest August INU stock ROM from www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9500&pcode=INU#firmware
a) Which is the best and safest Root method for the i9500? I once used the CF-Root method here but then went back to stock as there were no serious work on custom ROMS back then.
b) Once rooted, can you'll guide me to a couple of custom ROMS to start with .... once I've gone through a few suggested ROMS I guess I'll be confident enough to explore the ocean .... remember it's I9500
c) I've heard (rather read on and of) about "Xposed". Would prefer if the ROM incorporates this and then a guide to where I can find the various bits a pieces of Xposed.
Looking forward to your assistance as I hope to go live with my new look phone from the 1st of October
Thanks & Cheers

Can someone atleast tell me if I can use the CF-root method and if that is the safest way to go about rooting?
Thanks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=root i9500
a. Sure its safe.
B. Just try it out for yourself
C. There is an entire section on xda dedicated to xposed. You can find everything you want there.
I am new to Flashing Android phones and I hope someone can help me through this process. I am technical by nature but like everything else, if you have never done something before, it's always best to consult with those who have as to not brick your phone.
I have a Samsung S4 model number SPH-L720. This was purchased from Freedom Pop so it is technically their own custom ROM on the Sprint network. I later found out that their service is horrible and want to reflash my phone to a standard factory ROM, either a factory Sprint Rom or a Factory Google S4 (Non Carrier Specific) Rom.
The phone currently has Android Version 4.4.2 but I am flexible which version OS is on there.
I am confident with all the experts on this forum, someone can lead me through this process and let me know where to get the ROM's to put on here etc.
The phone already is rooted as it comes from Freedom Pop Rooted already.
Thank you all for your assistance. I will be sure to assist others in the process once I learn it myself.
I'm not a professional, but I might be able to help.... I'll try anyway
You mentioned being fine with returning to the stock ROM. Under normal circumstances that would be pretty complicated because you would need to install using ODIN and re-root afterwards. However, assuming you are running a custom recovery you should be able to install a zip from galaxys4root DOT COM, under the "galaxy s4 rooted stock roms" tab. These ROMs are all stock ROMs that are already rooted and may have a tweak or two. I recommend checking out the ROMs on that site, until you find what your looking for.
The following article should be helpful for installation via custom recovery: highonandroid DOT COM /android-roms/how-to-install-custom-rom-using-twrp-recovery-failproof-method
As I am a newbie on this forum I cannot post links, so please replace DOTCOM with appropriate extensions. Again, I'm not a professional, in fact, this is the first time I've attempted to give any advice yet so I apologize if I am lacking clarity. If I use any terms that don't make a lot of sense to you, feel free to ask any questions and I will attempt to respond in a timely manner.
Not sure how to efficiently help people when I am unable to use links. So I'm sorry if this offends any XDA mods. And I hope that any mods who read my reply will take into account that I am not spamming. I am trying to help.
Any luck?

Good evening to everyone,
I've been an Android user for the last 4 years (i started with the HTC Dream G1, the first ever made Android smartphone which had the version 1.1). The first time i approached the world of modding was for having really important features such as the sync of contacts with google account, and i also have fully modded my second device, an HTC One S, that i decided to change 2 days ago.
I purchased a Samsung Galaxy A5 and i'm going to mod it again since i don't like few things about the device.
Since i'm out of date with the current mod envirorment (the last time i did some kind of mod with my One S was over 1 year ago) i think i need a bit of refresh, so here are my questions:
1) Do i need to install some kind of special drivers, android developing tool, sdk, java things or anything special before using Odin or other rooting tools mentioned in the guides? I remember i lost an entire day the first time i rooted my devices since all the guides on the web didn't talk about installing this preliminary files.
2) I'm Italian, i live in Italy, i purchased my device in Italy too in a Vodafone store, but the CSC of my device does not appear to be Italian Vodafone, i can't rewrite it here at the moment but after a research on google i found out it was a German Vodafone CSC.
The firmware itself does not seem branded (no custom bootload animation, only the main app by vodafone which i like to have) and i'm going to change firmware anyway, but i still want to set a no-brand CSC.
When i changed the CSC of my HTC One S i remember it as a very complicated procedure, i had to extract a particular file from the smartphone using prompt's command, manually editing a text file and putting it back again with prompt.
I'd like to know if there's a different procedure for the Galaxy A5, i searched the web for a procedure but i have found none.
I saw a CSC option in Odin and i think this is probably the cleanest and fastest way, but i don't know a place where to find the various file for changing CSC.
3) Custom recovery: i had difficulties in finding custom recovery on the web too for this device, i saw a thread in this section fo the Galaxy A7. I suppose there's no custom recovery for the A5 at the moment, am i correct?
4) Any way to prevent Samsung Knox counter from increasing with root + flash of custom rom and eventually recovery? i read few guides but they seem to don't work anymore with recents updates.
Knowing if there's a way to reverse the counter in case of need it's ok too, but i've read that's much harder now than it was few years back, so i can suppose that maybe "Prevention is better than cure".
5) Are there any really really valid custom kernel / radio? I think i'm going to flash the CyanogenMod 12.1 but maybe there's some other flashable thing which is not included in this rom that can improve my devices.
6) after you've told me exactly what i can do know with my devices, could you please tell me the order for the various phases? I don't mean the very single steps, just if i have to change the CSC before or after than rooting or flashing the custom recovery before i have obtained the SU permissions ecc.
Thank you in advance for all your help, Italian forum are not very crowded in these days so i decided to write a thread in the best forum for this subject around the web!

Thank you very much for the answers! I'm probably going to mod my device this evening, hope it will go smooth
