[Q] Update to 2.2.1 not working - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a new mytouch 4g and I was about to start the rooting process but cannot get the phone to update to 2.2.1. I am not sure if my phone is just not displaying the version correctly.
I downloaded the image file as directed. I booted into recovery mode, the update went through after I pressed accept. I said update complete and then it restarted. Once the phone was back on, I went to Setting -> About Phone -> Software information, and the Android Version still shows 2.2. Am I looking in the wrong place? Anyone else have this problem? Is there a way to check or do this over adb? I have adb set up and is working.

as directed where? are you talking about my forcing the upgrade post? if so please reply in that post so as to not clutter up the dev section. Also for future reference questions go in the Q&A section.

dude you should just follow the Ultimate S=off steps since it works even if you're not updated, and start flashing roms. all the roms are up to date anyway

Please post questions in Q&A section.

[Q] Can't boot Android or Recovery

I can boot the phone into download mode, can't turn it on or boot into recovery. Will 'Odin3' work? Could someone post a working link and possibly explain what that is?
Odin basically lets your computer make changes to the rom/modem/kernel of your phone when it is in download mode. It can be used to completely return your phone to the state it was in when you first got it (or at an equivalent state with the latest updates applied). It sounds like it is exactly what you need right now. I have Odin'ed my phone many times when I was in the same situation you are in right now.
Here's a wiki entry about how to do it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700#Odin_Stock_Flashing
And here's the thread with the latest file (DK28) for doing that (i.e. use the one in this thread instead of the one in the wiki link at step #5 on the wiki if you want to have the latest leaked version, which is newer than the latest "official release" version from Sprint/Samsung):

How to un-root/de-root your Mytouch 3G Slide

Before I begin, I'd like to say that I know we have posted this everywhere.
The reason of this thread is because there are no real clear instructions on how to un-root, and there is no actual thread, hence the reason we get this question asked so much; something I want to eliminate.
How to UNROOT your Mytouch 3G Slide
[Optional] If you are sending back your phone to Tmobile for replacement, make sure you flash the newest radio out as of now. (this at the moment is 7.09) [/Optional]
1) You will need to download "ESPRIMG(2).zip" from this thread (This is all you need, you dont need anything else)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=713507
2) Rename "ESPRIMG(2).zip" to: ESPRIMG.zip
3) Place the new renamed file ESPRIMG.zip in the root of you SD card (this means in no folder)
4) Power off your phone any way you like
5) Turn your phone on while HOLDING: VOLUME DOWN and POWER.
This will get you to a screen where you will need to wait for some loading. Let it load.
6) Once above step has finished, phone will give you some options. Hit VOLUME UP to confirm flash
7) It will take some time, and when it's done, you will be unrooted with the stock Espresso.
Credits go to: eugene373, xda-fourms, CaliBoyPhillip, and some guy I cant remember
reserved for future way to unroot
I posted the ESRIMG.zip in the q&a section a few days ago, nice catch on the radio. I totally forgot about that for warranty reasons. This thread should hit the New Bible!

ask that in the Question and Answer forum of mytouch 3g slide.. im not too sure of what you're saying, and you'll get more answers there.
Hey Xologist,
Thanks for this post but I have a few things you might want to add on.
Your link to eugene373's ESPRIMG(2).zip works fine, but wouldn't auto update after a week. So instead of waiting to be updated I re-rooted and then un-rooted to 1.27.531.1 using the ESPRIMG that wegarner provided. After that I was able to do the manual OTA update without root.
wesgarner (1.27.531.1)
http://db.androidspin.com/androidspin_filedownload.asp?release=280&type=1
So after someone unroots they can just manually update(root not needed) to the current OTA via ChiefzReloaded's provided files.

Same file with a mirror. However, the google one ended up working for me.
I am assuming this will result in a factory wipe/reset as well, correct? I'm considering switching back to stock from Cyanogen 6.1.1 since it's unable to send or receive MMS messages for me but I'm afraid I may lose the pending messages if I revert back and won't be able to recover or view them.

Yeah it'll be a factory reset but you should still the messages as long as the phone hasn't actually grabbed them from the companies server. As for the actual issue, have you verified APN settings? I was having issues with MMS and data when I first flashed CM 7 and ended up switching to T-Mobiles alternate server to fix.

Thank you for confirming that this would wipe the device. I was also not aware that the MMS messages would still be retrievable if they have not yet been downloaded to the device (good to know!).
I see you have found my post on these forums in regards to my issue, so I will not get into the specifics in this topic, but yes, I have confirmed the APN settings several times now.
I've tried this, but I keep getting this error... "Main Version is older"
I need to unroot because I need to send my phone in for warranty service... my power button stopped working... makes it realy difficult to get into recovery mode or anything (impossible) but I can get into the boot loader
What can I do to remedy this?
Heck, if you could tell me how to corrupt the system folders I would do that so they couldn't tell it was rooted at all...
I've tried doing it this way and I extracted the file to the root of my SD card. But when I followed the steps, all it did was take me through like I was doing a reset of my phone. Didn't remove the actual ROM. Am I not supposed to extract it? What can I do to remove this ROM because I really don't like it on my phone.
you do not extract the zip file. you just put the ESPRIMG.zip file into your root folder. when you boot into recovery mode, the phone should automatically start searching for it (you might want to give it a little time to let everything load up). it will load (this will take a while) then press volume up to update when prompted. thanks to the OP for putting this up. you saved my butt, i have to return my phone for warranty replacement because the touchscreen and all the buttons stopped working.
Hey xologist, I'm sorry but I'm still very new to rooting. I've had some issues with the touchscreen and need to send my phone in for the warranty so I need to unroot it. What do you mean by flashing the newest radio? Where do I get it and how do I flash it?

you probably placed a different sim card in your phone because this phone is normally locked to T-Mobile. if you're on T-Mobile and want to use a different sim card, give them a call and they will get you an unlock code for free. if you thought you bought the phone unlocked (not locked to a carrier, T-Mobile), then it's not, return it to the seller or something.
I tried the esprimg.zip on the root of the sd card but every time it tries to apply it it says it is the wrong image and aborts. Any ideas?
no matter what i do i cant get it to install anything, i install and apply the esprimg.zip file, re boot, and still loads CM i may have forgot how to do all this fancey root stuff, i have Cm 7.1, can i pleeeease get a dummy version to unroot
Hi all, in a pickle here. I will be attempting to remove root and am on CM 7.1 stable. My obstacle is my volume buttons don't work. I'm removing root for warranty/return reasons, is there any way to go back to stock other than from the bootloader(sp?)? Thanks, all!
(2/12/12)So I ended up flashing CR's 2.2 rooted rom so that I could upgrade through HTC Sync to the 2.2 stock update. Thanks anyway

cant update phone to 2.2

I just got a old mytouch 3g no headphone jack today and i cant update it to 2.2 at first it said there is a 2 part update for my phone and i clicked i believe continue or w/e and it shut off and 4 hours later never asked metoo download the 2nd part or anything i shut it off ive clicked check for updates says its up to date. And i was going to download it manually and do it from my computer but i cant get a working link for the 2nd file
what version is it ? 32a/b ??
-> was it rooted before?
custom rom or ota?
Depends on your current fastboot information. Post that here, plus please answer mwallner's question about whether the phone is rooted or not and whether your running a custom ROM if you are rooted.

Rooted gingerbread keeps trying to download verizon update

Hey all,
I looked through the posts and wasn't able to find the answer so I am leaving this. Basically I upgraded my X from a rooted froyo to GB using the 2 files provided by P3Droid to go from the SBF froyo to GB rooted. It works great and I am having no freezing issues however the phone keeps trying to update and download the GB over the air update. I don't know how to stop this from happening or if I did something wrong. I have deleted a few of the Verizon apps that should stop any update from taking place anyway. I thank you in advance for your help.
I downloaded the "rooted gingerbread .596" from p3droid and my Droid X has never asked to update.
the only other thing I can think of is that I accidentally hit check for update on my phone but I don't think that it should have even found the gingerbread once I had installed it myself...
I just went into my settings and into "about phone". I also checked for a update and it says that it is up to date no update is necessary. So I have no idea what is going on. Only thing I can suggest is if it continues, is to SBF back to Froyo and reinstall p3Droid's rooted .596 again. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
You could let the update happen, it would go partially, fail and reboot and you're all set
Same problem with Sprint EVO 4g
I have also just installed "4.22.651.2 Rooted & De-Odexed" after accidentally dl the OTA update last week. I just hoped that installing the new ROM would eliminate the notifications to install the update but unfortunately it did not.
I did try to let it install so as to let it fail and rebooted, and the notification is still there.
Is there maybe a way to manually remove the update file?

this is the Droid X sub-forum. You will get the proper help if you post in the Evo section.
Sorry I just didn't find anything even closely related to this issue here and thought it would be best to not start a new thread. Isn't this a software issue and therefore somewhat universal?

here a link to the thread for your 4.22.651.2 Rooted & De-Odexed rom in the EVO section... and there's discussion in there about your exact problem http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110733
Thank you very much!
I'm having the same problem. It comes and goes with no ability to clear. It always pops up after a reboot. It never actually downloads, at least that I've seen....
Does anyone know which package to freeze so the updater stops flagging?
Stop OTA Updates
Freeze the application called "Updater 2.3.3".

Help! My phone is stuck

So my phone was on .91, rooted, and today i just unlocked the bootloader (with this script http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871). But now after it boots it wants me to enter my blur accont and as soon as i hit next, it wasnts to do the update to .141. I can copy the update but when i hit install later it kicks me back a screen and i have to do it all over again. Is there anything i can do to fix my phone. It is basically unusable
I'm not sure why a new thread, I think you could've just continued in the thread you already opened...
I assume you tried this already?

Thank you very much! I was searching for a way to stop the ota, not blur and sorry for opening a new thread, i wasnt sure if anyone would check it again
You definitely should not have started a second thread asking the same question, and questions go in the Q&A section.
What do you want to do now that you are rooted and booted? Stay on GB 4.5.91? Flash a custom ROM?

Yes i understand this now.
So far I've decided to stay with the stock 4.5.91 (for now) but i added faux's 1.3 Ghz kernel. It seems to be running much faster than before. Although I realized that there's now a bunch of apps I downloaded from play that are no longer available for my phone. What would cause this issue?
To stay with stock you have two choices I can think of:
First, flash a 4.5.141 fruitcake.
Second, find a way to disable updates. You could edit /system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.blur.service.blur/defaults.xml to a server that is inactive or doesn't exist. That will prevent your os from finding updates.
Maybe someone else knows another way to disable updates.

I was able to disable the updates by renaming blurupdater.odex and blurupdater.apk to a .bak.
What exactly is fruitcake, just a modified update that you can put on your phone with rom manager? (Sorry I haven't been able to find out too much about it)
