Samsung Repair Review - Epic 4G General

Hey all I figured I'd post a little review on the service I've had through Samsung on getting my phone repaired and keep you updated along with ask any questions if anyone had any.
Reason for Repair - Phone had developed lots of wiggle on the screen and my keyboard was getting scratched and scuffed when I slid open the phone.
Heres a time log -
12.20.10 - Requested Service over the phone cause online tried to charge me $70 for repair. Service rep was happy to help me file a service request along with give me 2ND Day Air, shipping where as online it was like $15 and ground was free. So I printed out the labeled, stripped my phone ( battery, battery cover, microsd ) packaged it up and sent it off next day.
12.23.10 - UPS tracking says it was received but no updates from Samsung.
12.24.10 - 12.27.10 - No info from Samsung.
12.28.10 - Samsung marked as received and gave me a link to track my repair progress ( Didn't work ) Called Samsung and rep told me that the technician had received my phone and was diagnosing it.
12.29.10 - Visited the website and around 5:00pm tonight, Tech updated the repair notes on the website - "REPLACED LCD, FLEX, TOUCH KEY PBA, LOWER, KEY PAD AND FRONT"
So so far I'm beyond happy and am just eager to get my phone back!
UPDATE :
12.30.10 - Received an email saying the item was shipped today again 2ND Day Air, So I'm hoping I get it tomorrow night, their located in Texas and I'm in California, so I'm crossing my fingers!
Sincerely,
D3luSi0n4L

I wish I worked at a place that took apart phones and replaced parts. Where do you apply for jobs like this?

Ya honestly that would be such a fun ass job, I mod blackberrys, but I've always wanted to get a spare bad esn epic 4g, just to take it apart and what not =D
If anyone has any info on this definitely post it up here!
Sincerely,

From what I understand about 90% of cell repairs are done by touchstone wireless. I looked into their east tennessee plant and based off what I read that particular location us not the best place as far as atmosphere goes. If you google them you can see if they have jobs close by.hope that helps.

dust in the screen is it cover by warranty replacement?

my dust situation is getting worse, before i did not mine but my screen is almost blind left top coner. would warranty replace it? since it was a manufacture problem.
not sure i think so call and ask they might tell you to take to a repair center and have them fix it
I actually just received my replacement for having the same issue. It was a pain trying to get it taken care of over the phone because they kept trying to pass me off to Asurion for an insurance replacement or I would randomly get disconnected. What you need to do is call and ask to be transfered to advanced tech support to handle a warranty replacement do to dust under the screen. Once I did that It took about 10 min to get the replacement sent out. However the Whole process before that took over an hour.
Technically that is not covered under warranty, since it is not a hardware malfunction. But I'm sure if you talk to a manager they will get you a replacement.
I literally went through the hoops yesterday. I have no called but this is what went down. I went to best buy where I bought the phone, they said go to sprint, sprint said they can do nothing but charge me the repair price or go to HTC. Emailed HTC and this is the response I got back today:
"Thank you for contacting HTC! We apologize for the issues you are experiencing with your HTC EVO device and would be happy to assist. We have verified you are still within 12 month MFG warranty period however warranty coverage would depend on a diagnosis by one of our certified technicians. Please contact Customer Care at 1-877-293-0807 for explanation of repair process, a possible repair quote, and to set up an RMA for repair if desired. When and if you call please have your serial number and DEC number available so we can further assist you. These numbers can be located on a sticker inside the phone after removing the battery if unaware of where to find. Thanks for choosing HTC! Sincerely, HTC Customer Care M-F, 8am – 8pm EST
To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number XXXXXXXXXXXX
Sincerely,
Chad
HTC"
I explained the situation and sent them pictures of the dust. I have not called yet and after reading am a little hesitant but oh well. We'll see how this goes.
**EDIT**
I just called them and the process was pretty smooth. Got the right person, gave them my info and they sent me a confirmation email. Said about 2 weeks for them to diagnose/ship me back the phone. All in all seemed pretty easy so I guess I would suggest emailing them then calling to get this fixed up.
Hope this helps!
What about dust on the camera lens. Not the outer plastic piece, the actual lens.

For those who are interested in Samsung service center in Montreal here is the address for in-warranty and out-of-warranty, they service everything Samsung, not only the phones:
Samsung - Service Absolut
3391 Griffith Street,
St. Laurent, Quebec,
H4T 1W5
514-738-8333
Closed December 27-th and January 3-rd
They do not ask any questions about your relations with Bell or any other provider. But they still need to have proof of purchase.
PS.
They are little bit hard to find, since they are behind this Audio/Video center across Ikea.
I wish there were a walk in service for Toronto too
FutureTel will not accept walk-ins, they only deal with Lawyers... i mean... Dealers
Can we 100% confirm that Samsung Canada office here at Toronto isn't a service centre and does not take customers? or maybe they just don't do cellphones?
Also, my question is....
If I have a 2nd hand Samsung Galaxy S without proof of purchase under my name or receipt. Yet have service with Bell Mobility, will the Samsung Canada @ Montreal repair centre accept the phone for warranty service?
What do you think?

Appears to be the case, unfortunately. (See http://futuretel.ca/where.html)
If mine died (fingers crossed it doesn't, but it's survived multiple flashes so I have reasonable hope), I'd drive out there anyway and scream and yell to get it fixed. Then again, I like to take the brute force way to get stuff done.
I left my old phone today morning at 10:30 and picked up a new one at 14:30.
They gave me a completely new phone with Froyo already installed.
No questions asked, very fast service.

This is going to make my holidays!!! I have a SGS with dead sd card and it's second hand. I have the receipt but it's a renewal invoice under the name of someone else and didn't want to go to bell as I'm a client and have already send another SGS for repair under my name. I need to have this one repaired (replaced) so I can sell it.
I am very PEEVED to say the least. I purchased the samsung galaxy when it first came out (end of August 2010) had the phone for less than 2 months then it was toast! It burnt my hand...screen went dead with a bunch of pixels on screen and burnt the screen. Now Samsung Absolut outfit in Montreal kept it for 2 months plus trying to figure out what was wrong, after me bugging my carrier almost everyday to find out where my phone is Absolut decided they could not diagnose the problem or what happened to the phone....supposedly they sent it to Samsung stating they could not fix, Samsung said they would replace the phone and still NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!! Tried looking for their phone number but Bell Aliant says they never pick the phone up....what is up with that??? Great customer service!!!!!!NOT~!!!!
Sorry it is a Samsung Galaxy Vibrant phone..

I forgot to ask one important thing...
How did Samsung service your phone?
Did they do a software fix?
or
Did they had to replace a hardware ?
They took my old phone and gave me a brand new one. Free of charge, nothing to pay.
woha wait there, I've sent my phone to Futuretel over a month ago and there is a place in Montreal that will do that on the spot !??? WHAT ? damn it...
anyone else tried them ?
Thank you Happy Hunter for the service center info
My situation was, 3 days after upgrading to Froyo, I got a few FC and after rebooting my SGS, it was stuck after the S logo. Tried to downgrade firmware, clear cache, formatted memory, nothing worked, and the phone wouldn't start up after all that.
So i went to the service center tonight, since it was late there was no technician, so I'll have to wait the next day to know how long it'll take to repair.
I had no proof of sale, since I bought my SGS off someone. The receptionist asked me which provider I was, I said Rogers, and asked if it was unlocked, I said yes and I bought the unlock code off Bell. And asked what happened to the phone.
That's all, the receptionist looked nice, they are aware of that problem.
I'll call tomorrow to see the status of my phone and let you guys know.
Btw, I noticed that on my receipt, it said day of purchase 1/30/10, so i assume that's the date the give to people without invoice, so for those that are like my, with no invoice, pray that your phone breaks before that date

Awesome,
Please do let us know how your process of them taking your phone in work out.
Because like many others, I also bought my phone as 2nd hand and do not have receipt and I also am using with Rogers.
So I am interested in knowing how Samsung will treat you.
Please keep us updated.

hey guys, just a lil update on my case (see post #12)
I just called the service center, they told me they have to order a part to be replaced in my SGS and that it'll take a couple of days. So I guess I'll have my mainboard replaced. Therefore no new cell phone for me

New phone doesn't always mean good, right/? maybe replacement board is a new revision or something. You never know.
Anyways, so you are saying that Montreal location will accept Galaxy S even if you do not have a receipt ?
Do they care if the phone is unlocked? or which carrier you are with ?
Were you told that the entire service will be free or charge too?
Let us know when you get your phone back.
Now if only there was one of these in Vancouver.

SBE ltd warranty repair uk (constant restarting)

Just got my phone back (well a brand new one actually) from repair so thought I'd share the experience here in case any one else is thinking of doing it.
My phone was constantly restarting and some research on the inet suggested it needed a new motherboard.
Sent my phone in by recorded delivery had to pay £5.50 to get insurance to cover the cost of the phone but nm.
SBE received it the next working day (7th) and I checked the progress the day after at:
https://extranet.sbe-ltd.co.uk/enduser/index.php
This said:
SBE fault: None
Customer fault: Software (network services)
Or similar and something about repair finished send back to user.
So I phoned them using 01233 619320 to avoid the 0870 number (www.saynoto0870.com) and said that this wouldn't fix the problem and I'd have to pay to send it back to them so they agreed to hold it and said something about submersion testing (no me either) which they said was just longer testing.
A few days later the progress had changed to on hold with team leader. Finally I received a brand new phone today on the 17th. So its taken 10 days but I've got a new phone.
So basically check on their site and phone em and they'll do a proper test and fix your phone properly.
Thanks for sharing this. I have seen recently some bad experiences here on the x10 forum. So thanks for sharing a good story.
Sent from XDA Premium from my X10a rooted running 2.2.1 Cyanogen 6.1.3gingerbreadV1 ROM
i broke my USB too..instead repairing they gave me a new one )
Update: In my excitement and rush to get phone rooted ect before I went away for the weekend I didn't notice all the scratches around the edge and on the middle button and a dent on the top, also quite a bit of force is needed to get the headphones in. The usb mount was also a bit flakey and it stopped recharging (using plug) in the middle of the night. It has restarted for no reason but isn't doing it all the time as before. Lets hope these probs clear up.
It looked new as they had cleaned it up a bit and applied a new screen protector (I was told not to send the back cover in). So in summary a company that doesn't give a sh*t about your phone/customer service just how fast they can do a shoddy repair job and get money off SE who also don't give a sh*t.
Ive sent mine in 3 times for losing network reception occasionally and random reboots.
Each time they just do a software update, screening or some crap like that and send it back!??? WTF!!??
Anyhow, the last repair (3rd one), which was a VIP repair because i put in a complaint was returned to me on saturday 19th with an aerial change.
Im gona give it a couple of days and ring back on Weds for an exchange as the 3rd repair was escalated to VIP and obviously if that didnt fix it a replacement should be in order.
My advice.. after the 2nd repair if unsuccesfull, phone back and demand a replacement and have your case escalated to a higher team. That should get the ball rolling.
P.S
Thanks for the number, that 0870 is EXTORTIONATE!!
As a foreigner living in london, I'm kinda worried that when i send my phone to warranty i will never see it again :S
If you send it by recorded delivery you can prove they recieved it so wouldn't worry about that. Yeah they was about to send mine back with a software update until I rang up, so basically everyone needs to ring up to get em to do sumat!

VERY Impressed with HTC USA!

2 weeks ago to the day, I accidentally dropped my HD2. Nothing major.. I was actually sitting down when it happened, and the phone bumped my ankle then gently bumped the floor.. no big deal right? (It has a hard shell protector). Well, then as the phone flipped over, it bumped the edge of a table leg and damn! Four hairline cracks on the digitizer. And no more functionality though the LCD was fine and the phone was working but locked with no way to unlock it.
So, I weigh out the cost of repair vs. replacing it all together. Ultimately, it was cheaper to repair the screen.
Here is what blew my mind! Keep in mind that I am in Canada, I purchased the phone (T-Mobile Branded) on the 'net, it's unlocked, tweaked, and therefore there is no warranty.
So, on 04/01/2011, I contact HTC USA. To my surprise I actually get an American on the phone not some call center in a third world country. Wow! The person totally has their act together and in less than 10 minutes, I have a quote for the repair. Wow again! The rep explained everything in detail along with the mandatory disclaimers and while they were finishing up that, I'm receiving an email with all the necessary details and an RMA and Case number and shipping instructions. Wow yet again!
04/02/2011, I send the phone to the repair center in Texas. By 04/05/2011 at 10:50pm the phone has arrived at the repair center. The next morning, I get a call from HTC confirming the damage (which I knew), and they simply want a yes or no to go ahead with the repairs or not. By the afternoon, I have a FedEx tracking number, the phone is fixed and it's on its way back to me in Canada. Wow one more time!
04/11/2011 FedEx is at my door with my phone and HTC picked up the return shipping. Well.. you guessed it! Wow!
I am reconfiguring the phone back to the way I had it prior to sending it as I write this. It had been hard reset to factory spec which if fine and to be expected since they likely run various diag after repair.
So, for $120.00 + $25.00 Shipping, my phone is working again!
There's a case study for keeping our companies and their support centers on North American soil. There are dozens of companies I could list that should be taking notes. 8)
Nice to see a positive post like this. glad you got you HD2 repaired and are now back to modding it.
The whole repair process was nine days including weekends which I think is darn good!
That said, I was without the phone/device for 2 weeks. Talk about withdrawals! LOL!
Amazing how reliant we become on these devices. I use it to manage my daily activities for 3 businesses, 1 job, and my personal life/activities. I was on the verge of anxiety at times! Hehehehe!
At least I had my trusty HTC 8125 as backup and while it cannot connect to my cellular provider's network for phone/text/data, at least I had my calendars, tasks, notes, and contacts but I'll tell ya, talk about feeling tethered to a land line and out of the loop.
Yep, it just got HardSPL 4, my preferred radio flash, BsB, Total Commander, and a few other goodies back on and is now syncing with my Desktop and Exchange. d'-'

It was not a bad price if it was a year ago, but I just picked up another near mint condition one for $150 with everything included off criaglist.
Sent from HTC HD2 with Android
Yeah, fair enough however, in Canada, the phone is not even available therefore my options were a bit more limited to purchase a new phone through a system where there is a little more security in knowing that if it turns out to be a bad deal, the purchase it covered. i.e. Buyer Protection from eBay or anything like that.
It's not like you can hop on a local Craigslist up here and find them readily.
So, the replacement cost for a whole phone was much higher, and the repair was the way to go.

You're a lucky guy.
I've had less good experiences in the Benelux here.
I called in mine for a screen and gps issue that is warranty issue since I run the official image on this HD2.
They didn't pickup the device twice as promised which drove me up the wall since I had my colleague involved and had to change several appointments with my clients for.
After I complained I got called by a customer care guy and was promised my device would be fixed one week after the pickup.
Called them this afternoon since we are one week further and my device was waiting for 2 parts but they didn't know which.
I wonder how many parts can break in the HD2 that direct to the fault. Guessing the main board and an LCD screen?
Well according to the customer service I will have to wait for the parts to come in.
I am so disappointed in the service and hole customer care after having a touch, touch pro, touch hd etc.
The touch pro which costed me over 500 Euro ended up in the trash after 3 failed repairs and numerous errors which where caused by the repair center. Sending it back to another address and name was only the tip of the iceberg.
Looking around for a dedicated Android device the LG optimus 2x looks good since it has a 24hour swap warranty.
Sorry to hear bro!
Heck, they even confirmed parts availability while on the initial call just prior to setting up the RMA. Maybe I just lucked out.
I work in the IT field and deal with all kinds of this stuff all the time and it has been years since I encountered this type of competence and efficiency. Don't know what else to say.
Have you checked out the Motorola Atrix?
http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/U...d-Services/Mobile-Phones/Motorola-ATRIX-US-EN
This thing looks cool! Watched several segments on it during the CES show back in February. My only question or disappointment was in all the promo vids from the CES they were touting Android 3 Honeycomb however at the Motorola site its tech specs list Android 2.2.
Good luck in your search!

thx for the headsup JayG!
Well lets say that I do the same work as you and do escallations and process realignments. If I could have a go in this whole thing .....
The Motorola looks interesting but try to find one in Europe.
I very agree with your assessment of HTC. My story is one better. I had bought my phone (HTC ELFIN P3452 TOUCH) in India. It had some battery charging issues and when on a whim I finally contacted HTC US, the lady told me that the warranty on the phone had expired 5 days back. I politely requested her if there is something she could do. She came back a few minutes later and told me she will take the phone as under warranty, but she will have to get back to me after figuring out where I should be sending the phone for repair as they figured HTC touch is not serviced anymore. I did not get a call back for 10 days and then I called back and explained my situation again and the previous call to a totally different lady. She gave me an RMA and asked me to ship to their TX facility. I got the phone back with brand new board in a week. But then I noticed a crack in the body. Since now the phone was under a 90 day warranty, I called back and explained the situation. They gave another RMA and so I sent it back. another week later, I get the phone back and it was brand new everything including the LCD and the phone. New IMEI.
HTC is top notch. So my current phone is HD2 and backup phone is Touch.

If you need repairs and you live near the Dallas/Fort Worth area

My Transformer is unresponsive on the bottom 1 inch of the screen (landscape mode), so I got an RMA from ASUS. By the way, very efficient and quick customer support.
When I got the RMA, I was surprised at the address of the Service Center: 4051 N. Hwy 121, Suite 100, Grapevine, TX 76051. Since I live in Bedford, I decided to save myself the time and expense of shipping the unit.
When I searched Google maps by address and ZIP, I was given the incorrect location. Searching by address and city, I got the proper map. CLICK HERE.
It's a big building and difficult to find the Receiving door. The repairs are actually performed by Wistron Infocomm, a pretty good size company with some 300 people and the cars to show it.
You need to stay on the service road of Highway 121 going south from Freeport Parkway. Take the third entrance and go to Suite 100, but...
... that's the main entrace. Drive about 75 more feet and then turn right, toward the back of the building, on the opposite side of the entrance, until you find some stairs and a door marked 4051 N. Hwy 121 - Suite 100. I had to ask the security guard at the main entrance to alert the security guard at this door to open it. You'll need to knock on this door.
That's it (assuming someone comes to the door). I asked if someone could take a quick look at the unit, and she looked at me with a strange expression, like "you're joking, right?". Oh well, I saved the shipping and the time. Now we wait.
I hope this helps someone.
George
UPDATE AT DROPOFF+2 I've been unable to get status using ASUS's site, and the live chat does not work. Called Customer Service, they said a part controlling the screen response has been changed and the device is in final testing. Maybe shipping today...
UPDATE AT DROPOFF+6 Got it today. The unresponsive screen is fixed, but now I have a circular, 1/4 inch round light bleed spot, just right of center...! Damn! Very unhappy with Customer Service on the followup... first they told me the tablet was shipped back on Friday, but it was actually shipped late on Monday. When I asked for the tracking number, they gave me somebody else's, and didn't have mine. They were going to call me with the information... and I've been waiting for 10 hours now.
Wow you are lucky then. Most places would refuse it if you tried that. LOL!!!!!
HTC, HP, and now Asus service centers are in Grapevine... LOL

and honestly i dont think they should refuse. as long as you have a RMA set up, there should not be any issues driving that baby there. after all it got there and your set up for a RMA
love it, thanks op. Deep in the heart of texas. Go rangers.
so glad I live 5 minutes from the speedway for once.
Drop off RMA
When I have RMA'd my tablet (twice, came back with the WiFi not working) their info said I could drop it off if I wanted to. I also talked about being able to pick it up.

Raced there at over 115 degrees. 145 degrees inside the cars... Man, that was hot...
Just did this
Dropped off my wife's broken Nexus 7. Company is called SMS and if you enter the front, talk to the security guard, he'll ring up someone from the back to come take the unit. Make sure you have your paperwork and they will give you a signed receipt. Hopefully we can get my Nexus 7 repaired under warranty, I haven't ever had a singe problem with a cracked screen on the 6 tablets I own nor the dozens of phones our family has used. In other words, we take care of our stuff...
Thanks. That's pretty cool. I thought about sending my Nexus 7 this way but found it would cost about $10-$11 with tolls plus 2 hours of my time. If I send it via USPS it would cost about $9 including insurance and tracking. I think USPS is the way to go. However, if my father has a problem with his Transformer I will hand carry it over. It's definitely good to know. And it is convenient if we need it back quickly. I sent my phone to HTC in Houston and they sent it via lousy FedEx 3 day Saver, which not only rerouted my phone to Memphis but intentionally postponed delivery until the 3 day deadline. USPS is cheaper and ironically better and I'd recommend it over FedEx "Saver" that costs twice with worse service.
