Android And .wma drm - Nexus S General

Hello,
I think to buy a Google Nexus S to replace my WP7 but I 've a Zune Pass.
I wanna know if musics of my Zune Pass can be read on Android less remove DRM
It's WMA DRM musics
Thank for your answers
Best regards
Space

Your Zune Pass music will only work if you strip the DRM from it, but that is also illegal in most countries and considered stealing since your only suppose to have access to that content while your paying for zune pass.
If you rely on zunepass for your music, you should either keep your WP7 or buy a zuneHD in addition to your nexus s.

Windows Media Player who's using it reliably?

Hi there,
Is anyone using Windows Media Player to play music on their SD card ?
At first glance Windows Media Player seems great being able to sync with your playlists and have Album covers displayed on the player similar to an ipod. A2DP works and you can control music with AVRCP ..but.. It seems to be the most unreliable piece of software out there. From personal experience syncing seems to hang after 4-5 songs unless you tap the device screen. The song library on the SD card suddely disappears and you have to delete the MSMETDATA directory and the WMDRM directory on the card to be able to get WM player to find the files and add it back to the library.
So what other Players are people using instead?
Hmm, this may not be helpful to you, but I use WMP with no problems, BUT, I manually transfer my music to my SD card. I know there are other players out there that most people here like better than WMP, but for my purposes and what I do (listen to music on my SD card but no synching ever required, and also stream music/video from my home pc to my Tytn) WMP works more than fine for me. Even though the other players are hands-down more rich in features, I'd rather not use up precious storage space when WMP works great for me.
Sorry if that doesn't help, I know your question seemed to be more geared toward synching music. If you're synching DRM'ed music files, good luck, sometimes nothing can be more of a pain in the a**!
By the way, I'm assuming you're talking about version 10 of WMP as far as what you have on your desktop? Microsoft just announced today that WMP 11 is out of beta and is full release version now. It specifically talks about addressing issues with synching to Pocket PC in the description of the updates that have happened since it's first beta. Give it a shot.
Everyone complains about WMP on PPC or SP; but I love it. It does everything I need, sure it uses a lot of ram, but if I'm just listening to music, do I need it to do anything thing else?
All my music is mp4a. WMP won't stream mp4a out an A2DP connection.
I refuse to buy music from iTunes, so I don't have that problem
Yeah, but mine's got album art that gets displayed by CorePlayer
Does CorePlayer support AVRCP?
I use PocketPlayer to listen to music from the SD card without problem, although the interface can be a little 'laggy'. It plays gapless .ogg vorbis files so that is a major boon. I've tried PocketMusic which claims to have gapless but doesn't work correctly. WM10 is just too much of a pain in the ass when trying to load music, and has no EQ etc.
I do use WM10 for watching movies though (until Coreplayer gets divx/xvid support for the TyTN that is!). I have been playing mp4 films with some degree of success, however if I pause the film at any time the Audio disappears. I need to restart WM10 to get it working again. Very annoying!
My T-Mobile VARIO II together with Windows Media 11 and HP Bluetooth Stereo Headset (well I know there are better ones)
A Golden combination.
Stereo music easy sync and the best the Album art is also included when you sync via the Windows Media. Also I am using the Windows Media today plugin which was published somewhere here in the Hermes forum (it comes from the iMATE ROM) Perfect!!!!!!!!
The Windows Media Player eats up a lot of memory but I do not complain, even with other things running I seldom see my device having less than 17 MB of program memory .
A2DP and AVRCP work a treat without any tweaks.
For me Microsoft Rules!
And in regards to Apple, well I find it ancient that you have to convert files to different format if you want to use the songs on more devices. I mean guys if I rip my CD into iTunes then this is it only the iPOD can use it.
Anyhow when Zune is there then I am afraid Apple can kiss their arses goodbuy in regards to jhaving the majority of the market in hands.
P.S. BTW I also use my QTEK 8500 in the same setting and that is even more sweet then VARIO II because you can see everything without opening the device.
Sleuth,
WMP displays album art for all of my mp3's and wma's as well.
Churchill,
As much as I'd love to agree with you and see the Ipod get taken down by the Zune, I think it will be a cold day down south before that ever happens. Tech analysts the world around are predicting the Zune to be the biggest failure of Microsoft's ventures, ever. I hope I'm wrong, but as much as I hate the proprietary nature of Apple's music platform, the sheer style of the Ipod, IMHO, cannot be beat. And the new full touchscreen Ipod that is coming out will just re-solidify that.
Anyway, sorry to hijack... this thread is about Windows Media Player
stpete111!
I totally agree with you about the styling of the ipods, but as they say "looks might be deceiving" I mean Of course looks are important but if because of it I have to have less functionality or incovenience, man I would walk around with a brick around my neck
I agree totally. I'll just bet though that very few of the people that the Ipod has reeled in since 2001 will be pulled away from it by the Zune.
You should have had another choice for "don't use PPC for media" or something to that effect... I still say GET AN IPOD!!!!
I really think I'm the only one who absolutely hates everything that is Apple...

I owned an ipod briefly and was so disappointed with the sound quality I took it back to the shop for a refund. I did some research and settled on iRiver in the end. Far better sound quality and styling than the ipod IMO.
I also personally don't think Zune will be a failure... People said xbox would be a failure, and to some degree it was (I read in the press they lost millions on it) but as that's just pocket change to Micro$oft they just come back again with something bigger and better, e.g. the xbox 360. And boy what a device that is. If the Zune loses money they'll just go back to the drawing board and make it better until it becomes a success. That's the great thing about having a bottomless pit of money.
I actually think the Zune sounds like a great device so far anyway - and with the Wifi option to share music with other people, how can they go wrong? Assuming they don't DRM sharing music files somehow. If they do some clever bugger will just create some custom firmware for it anyway... guess we'll have to wait and see!

You're probably right!
Until iTunes runs on PPC (which I don't see happening anytime soon), there is no way I'd give up my iPod -- it simply sounds better and it's easier to use... imagine that!
Darkjedi - you are NOT the only one who hates everything that is Apple. I'm not saying that I hate everything Apple... I used to, then I saw the 24" Intel Core Duo Imac in CompUSA and almost sh** myself. Wow, what a friggin piece of equipment. And don't even get me going on their G5's and rumored Octocore sets coming out. BUT, I know a good number of people that DO hate everything Apple. Anyway, I just hate DRM and proprietary platforms, and while Microsoft bows to the RIAA with DRM just like Apple does, Apple's platform is much more restrictive, in my opinion.
Goesto11 - I definitely cannot argue with the fact that Itunes is about the easiest and best organized app to use for digital media, and, I had an Ipod Shuffle for a few months and I couldn't believe the sound quality coming from that thing. They definitely have that down.
goonerz - just so you know, there will be DRM imposed on the Wi-Fi sharing with the Zune. Once you share a song with someone, they can only listen to it 3 times, then they are given the choice to purchase the track (or more like the DRM key) or it gets deleted. I agree with you totally though, it likely won't be long until that's cracked. I of course would never condone stealing in any shape or form And trust me, if the Zune isn't a failure, I'll be the first to gladly eat my words. I truly hope that it is not.
Sorry, I know this thread has taken a left turn (or a hijack if you will) but I don't care... I love talking about this stuff
I love the look, design, and feel of the Zune, right down to the UI, but DRM is going to CRIPPLE the Zune, and people aren't going to like it at all.

itunes

Hey i wondered if its possible to have itunes on the x1? Thanks
not that i'm aware of ...
what are you looking for ? a music player or something else ?
you can use itunes agent to sync x1 with itunes if you set it in usb storage mode
or are you asking if apple will release a player for windows mobile (this is unlikely)
or do you simply wish to play m4a without DRM or m4a with DRM ?
thanks for your replies...i think i may have found what i'm looking for but i have no idea how it works? could anyone explain? thanks

Thats only going to sync your non drm protected music from itunes

Audible on Android

Does anyone know of a way of playing Audible.com audiobook files on our phones?
Would be nice since I have 6 credits and probably 6 books waiting to be listened to. Listening to them on my computer is not an option.
I suppose you could use a program like Sound Taxi to convert them to generic MP3's I guess.
I used it to remove DRM from a WMV I had purchased. It only works if you can play the file so it doesn't crack the DRM. It seems to be like a digital form of burning protected iTunes files to cd and then ripping them.
I also found this: http://www.drmbuster.com/convert-aax-files.html which seems to be made for this job.
I hope this doesn't violate forum rules as you can only do it with a valid drm license. If so then can the mods remove it?
How random is that! i was just looking at the Audible earlier and wondering if it was still worth my ££££. I only came here to look busy on y PC at work!
EDIT : Then again, it doesn't appear to work in the UK....

iTunes and HD2

Just did a search on the forum and noticed that no one had mentioned iTunes Agent (http://ita.sourceforge.net/).
"iTunes Agent is a tiny application which rests in your system tray, constantly looking for devices being connected to your system. If a device it recognizes is connected it enables you to manage it via a playlist in iTunes. You may even associate your player with a Smart Playlist, such as "Party Shuffle", and always have a new collection of tracks on your player!
When you are done modifying the list of tracks for your player you can synchronize it with two small mouse-clicks!"
I thought it was good to mention as i have a itunes server service which i use for music and also a ipod touch and keeping them all in sync inc HD2 and any other device is very handy.
http://www.binaryfortress.com/itunes-sync/
This does a similar sort of thing, doesnt need to start with windows and hide in your tray though!
itunes and HTC HD2
Can itunes be downloaded and purchase the songs, games, and music on the
windows os? Are the games scaled to work on the HTC HD2? If so, how do you do this?

music will work videos might work and games defiantly wont work at all.
itunes sync
Found a very good free app (doubletwist) that syncronizes itunes / iphoto/ video libraries between the Mac and any storage device. I have been using it on the HTC HD2 for a week and it syncs all the playlists from itunes and even photos and videos. it is linked to amazon music store and content can be downloaded directly. The interface is just like itunes and seems very very easy to use...just select your device from the panel, select playlists and click sync....all the playlists created get recognised by the HTC sense media player.. google doubletwist and download ...and you are all set.....
doubletwist
doesn't work for me. my hd2 is running windows mobile 6.5 and while the app recognizes my device after it's plugged into my computer and also sees the itunes files and playlists, nothing shows up after the supposed sync takes place.
Interested in such an app for my HD2 on WM 6.5
Tried Itunes agent, not really user friendly and didnt manage to add my HD2 on it.
Ive got loads on myusic on itunes, would like to put one of my playlist songs (around 500 mbs of music) on my HD2.. is there a simple way? Copying items from itunes doesnt seem to work.. and there is a mix of MP3 files and AAC files... will they read allright on HD2?
If they where bought from the iTunes store..and no explicitly DRM free, then no, they will not work no matter how you copy them to your device.

Zune pass

When I buy my omnia 7 I thought I'd start using zune pass. It says I have access to unlimited downloads, is this true or is it limited to a certain number per month?
With a Zune Pass, you can download almost all the music in the Zune Market Place.
BUT...
You can only play them on a PC, a Zune or a WP7 device thats linked to your Zune Pass.
If I remember correctly thats x3 PC's and x3 Zune's i'm not sure how many WP7's. Although 5 are allowed in the Zune software.
Indeed, just to add to ZaForD's comments, you can only play the music for as long as you are paying for your Zune Pass. You can download as much as music as you like, but the files are DRM-protected; if you stop paying for Zune Pass, the DRM kicks in and the files are basically 'disabled'. They'll still exist as media on your computer, phone etc, but they're only enabled to be listened to while you have an active, paid-for subscription to the Zune service.
If you want to download files that don't have this kind of limitation (e.g. if you want to be able to copy music onto a microSD to use on your Android phone as well as your Windows Phone), you can buy DRM-free MP3 files from Zune instead.
I mix and match, i bought a zune pass for a year upfront and will next year while i have this phone.
I find the zune pass is great for downloading/streaming everything new i see/hear and getting new albums you might not want to have paid for after you listen to it, I've listened to 34 albums on this zune pass so far and bought 3 of them to keep forever without DRM and too be able to bring them over to the mixing table.
For the price of zune pass for a year to download "anything" it's a bargin if your like me and spend more than around £8 a month on music lol but sometimes regret some album buys after hearing one track on the radio ect....
Can anyone tell me whether you can stream music over 3G or if it's only available via wifi?

Connects over 3G/WIFI downloads them too the phone whenever you want them. SO you can delete them.... when out and about later with a friend and remember the track and wanna show them, redownload without any problems and play ect...
Hmm, sounds ideal for me.
I didn't actually know you could buy a year's subscription, and now I've looked into it £90 is a bit steep.
Incidentally, can you burn music downloaded with a zune pass to CDs?
I've never tried this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
As the software/device checks your user rights before it plays the songs.
So where there stored shouldn't matter.
@gcaw
Thanks for filling in the gaps
Not that i condone it in any way, but if you try know how, it's easy to sort out...
I look at it that the £90 gives you 10 free downloadable MP3's a month you can keep forever without DRM.
So thats 100 DRM free MP3's a year for £90 and all the rest of the free downloads while you have Zune Pass... as I said, I use the pass to find out what i want to download.
Then mostly buy indervidual MP3s as i'm not an albums person unless it's "epic", i don't waste space with an album of a band i like one song just to say i have the album....
If money isn't an issue for you, then this method isn't a problem i've found for unlimited music downloads and listening pleasure. I can and still buy single MP3s and always will i just love the fact for £90 a year i get "unlimited" music

About the 10 free songs thing, how do you know how many you have left to keep or which ones you have selected to keep etc.
Just to be clear, the 10 free DRM-free MP3 downloads offering is exclusive to US Zune customers; it's not available in the UK, Australia or other Zune markets, to my knowledge at least.
Also, to answer an earlier question, you cannot burn subscription music from Zune Pass on to a CD. The monthly fee that you pay for Zune Pass is only for the right to listen to music through the Zune service; you're not buying the rights to listen to the music elsewhere on a non-Zune device, such as a Zune HD, Windows Phone or Xbox 360.
If you want to be able to burn music from Zune on to a CD or on to a non-Zune device like an Android phone or another music player, you must purchase the music as DRM-free MP3 on a per-track or per-album basis.
Zune Pass = access to Zune stream/download service only; you're not buying the music, so you can't take the files elsewhere.

Nope you get 10 in the UK aswell.... as i said
They download as WMA from "Zune Pass" so everything plays them, Even VirtualDJ *thought i left that in my last post, but seems not*
As i said i don't condone nor control what you do with them. If you know how DRM works, it's not exactly taking apart a human with a spoon is it ?
But as i pay for it years on end i don't give a rats what other people do.

Well, no, that's not actually the case.
If you're getting ten free in the UK, then you must be a special case. I live in London, and I bought both my Windows Phone and my Zune Pass here, and I don't get the ten free MP3s.
There is no mention of the 10 free DRM-free MP3s being made available to UK customers on the UK Zune.net website.
Look at the Zune Pass US page where, below the main black banner, you'll see three sub-headers - Anywhere You Go, Unlimited Music, and Keep 10; "Keep 10" mentions the 10 free MP3s feature, and this is repeated in the feature list below, and terms related to this feature are given in the small print at the bottom. On the Zune Pass UK page, the "Keep 10" sub-header is missing, as is any mention of it in the feature list or in the small print.
Additionally, Microsoft states on this page that "the offer in the U.S. will remain at $14.99 per month for unlimited downloads and streaming access, with the ability to keep 10 MP3s per month", but does not make the same assurance for UK customers.
Under footnote 8 on the same page, it explicitly states that the "keep 10 MP3s per month feature available to U.S. Zune Pass subscribers only, on their PC or Windows Phone 7".
I'm not disputing that you're somehow getting the 10 free MP3s in the UK with a UK-purchased account, but that's clearly not the norm, which is why I'm trying to make that fact clear to other users, who can't reasonably expect to get something as part of the package that most other users aren't getting, and which Microsoft isn't promising.
mwako was right about being able to play Zune Pass music on other devices - but only devices that support Windows Media DRM. Those devices need to be able to sync to Zune or Windows Media software to update their DRM subscriptions (usually every two weeks or every month). If the DRM subscription is not updated within that period, the DRM validation 'expires' and the media become unusable until the validation is updated.
However, the original question was about being able to burn Zune Pass subscription music to a CD, and the answer to that is no.
Well not sure how, but i get them lol. I've been signed up for a while now so can't really say why... just do... sorry, thought it was the norm as it's not just me, thats the only reason now i keep paying, as i said it's an album a month for free and i don't listen to albums, more tracks then mix with them. so Zune Pass is great for that. 320kb most tracks, for an audiophile it's bliss on this phone with it's audio decoder and a cracking set of headphones.
I can't agree more you can't burn DRM protected music to CD lol. *sigh* i'll just leave it at that for you.
With Zune Pass, do you download songs to the phone?Or can you only stream them, thereby needing to use your data allowance everytime you listen to a song?
You can choose to download the songs to your computer and then sync them with your phone; or download directly to your phone over the air; or stream them to any Zune Pass enabled device (Windows Phone, Xbox 360, computer).
If you're worried about preserving your data allowance, the best way is to download songs to your computer and then sync them to your phone.
If you download the songs, they're stored on your phone/computer until you remove them. If you stream them, they're not stored locally. If your Zune Pass expires/is not renewed, any songs that you've downloaded will remain on your device until they are deleted; i.e. they don't 'self-destruct', they just 'self-disable'.
Basicly exactly same as gcaw said....

From Site - go get the trial pass...
https://live.zune.net/en-GB/account/buySubscription
***Your Zune 14-day Trial Pass gives you unlimited access to millions of songs at Zune Marketplace. Stream on Xbox 360 and stream/download on your PC, Windows Phone 7, and Zune player as many songs as you like and listen to them for the duration of your trial. You won’t be charged: your trial pass expires after the trial period. It does not automatically convert to a Zune Pass subscription. To continue enjoying Zune Pass after the trial, you'll need a full Zune Pass. Some songs and other content in the marketplace are not available via Zune Pass. Available content may vary over time.***
And yes... download uses your dataplan if your on 3G and not wifi, if you at home or ANYWHERE with public wifi. just turn off data connection and use WIFI.
t-mobile 3GB allowance is nice. it's like 764 songs "IF" you could/wanted that many in a month....
I can't seem to find out how to download songs on my phone. I can see how to buy them, but I don't see an option to get the DRM-protected version for free.
I can see the option on my computer however, just not on my phone; am I missing something?
