I have been into HTC bandwagon for quite some years and I've learned that every HTC device that I owned have been hacked to run on new OS that isn't designed for it. I am wondering how likely developers can homebrew their SGS from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread, IF Samsung never leaks or release these upgraded firmwares.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still very much in love with SGS but I just couldn't make up my mind between HTC Desire and SGS, especially in its future software upgrades.

If you are looking for long-term suppor the Desire is probably bettor of since it has almost the same hardware as the Nexus One, and the roms for the nexus are pretty easily hacked onto the Desire.
If you check on the Dev section, you will see that Samsung have already leaked pre-beta copies of Froyo, and as for Gingerbread, until the specs are confirmed no-one knows if the hardware requirements are within the spec of any current phone.
As post #2 says, Desire would be a safer choice.
Even as of now, there are no available custom roms for SGS. Only mods of the existing leaks. That might change in the future, but let's comment on the current situation.
If you want quicker / faster Firmware release, pick Nexus One or HTC Desire.
Nexus One get the most latest update from Google OTA.
And HTC Desire is the little twin brother that born few months later with a very similar hardware space. + HTC Desire has few famous custom ROM writer that release nightly build firmware if you want to take the risk and challenge.
Now that SamsungFirmware has stopped the leak of beta firmware.
"Samsung NOT happy with 2.2 rom leaks for Galaxy S. We will wait for more sorry guys we dont want trouble "

I'm just curious seeing the Gingerbread OS requires very high-spec devices, and that the Legend is only a mid-range phone.
I don't think Google have even stated what the min spec's are for it, afaik it's mostly assumed a 1ghz cpu, 512mb ram etc are required.
THE ANSWER IS NO
FOLLOW ME http://smartsreenath.blogspot.com/
nah, i think google will optimize the speed of the android os etc.
it wouldnt be smart to point out low and mid range devices.
the real question is, will htc port gingerbread for the legend?
why ? there's no point to update an old phone.. it's htc. it took them a long time to port froyo..
Maby someone will cook it for us... but yes just we have to wait froyo update for legend

HTC will never release Gingerbread for mid range phones.
SAME topic in development section where Ali Ba states that he has a good chance in cooking one along with the CM developers.

Sure they won't... they are not dumb to have support for devices that are more than 2 years old. Why would they... they release at least 10 devices per year. Their priority is to support most profitable devices at any moment.
What they could and should do is to release specs for hardware in such old devices so community would be able to "support" those if there is a will.
GOOD NEWS! for Galaxy S owners, the Gingerbread man will be coming to Samsung Most popular smartphone (Galaxy S) Flag-ship.
Remeber, Earlier this Month, Samsung Mobile India Twitter feed tells the fact that the mobile will get Android 2.3 (Screenshot below), The company kept it short and simple with a brief tweet: "Yes we will get gingerbeard on GalaxyS." but no other info announced from the company about the update. As we know Samsung has released the Froyo to All users on Many worldwide Carriers on 11,November 2010 and All of them is Now enjoying Froyo and Waiting to taste the Gingerbread.
Well, Today we Got a Confirmation That Samsung Galaxy S is Getting Another Update probably on February,2011 may be Earlier and this update will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread onboard. Leaked ROMs and Videos may start rolling-out on January so Stay tuned, Enjoy your Froyo... Gingerbread is coming on the way to Make "YouMobile".
Gingerbread brings with it an improved user interface which is slicker and more streamlined, along with better power management. It also boasts one-touch word selection and copy/paste, support for multiple cameras and goodies such as NFC (Near Field Communications).

This is a joke for sure.
My S has Eclair, till this time there is no official froyo upgrade available for my phone and samsung is going to release gingerbread the coming February?
Are we talking about Samsung or about the comedy channel?

This is the difference between porting (having to program the drivers for about everything) and having a native release (like HTC on N1).
Now that NexusS is in the hands of Google, we can expect faster release!

Froyo has been out since October/early November, officially released by Samsung. Blame your carrier if your not getting the update. Contrary to belief, Samsung is quicker than HTC when pushing out updates, it's just that HTC devices have a much larger userbase on XDA, hence the quicker porting/updating.
2.2.1 has been out officially since September as well on N1,

N1 is the base on wich they developped the update, don't you think it's normal it gets prior updates?
It is also pretty usual that all the "clones" of N1 will get theses updates pretty fast, since HTC only have to put their bloatware on it and it's pretty much done!
Thanks! Hope this is true.

Both of these are hardware dependant and both the Galaxy S doesn't have. The multiple camera support is for using with taking 3D pictures and/or recording 3D movies. And NFC is there so that android devices can attempt to get ahead of the iphone5 which is said to support it but these needs a dedicated chip.

Google can not give the gingerbread code out to companies until it has been officially released.
Meaning no company will have any advantage in the race for gingerbread.

I have had one problem with this phone since purchase in September. You need to try a custom rom with a kernel upgrade, not like there is any lag in stock JPU.
I don't get how so many people complain about this great device when it can be pimped out within 30 minutes.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Some Galaxy still don't have an official Froyo update yet. And the ones that do are still laggy. The 2.2.1 is finally a ROM that isn't laggy but its not official its a leak.
If Samsung comes out with Gingerbread they will screw it up. I'd rather have the community come up with a basic Gingerbread that works. And the community will do it long before Samsung does.
dude this is samsung, we all saw what happened with froyo and all the delays.
I have little hope for a febuary release, i say it's closer to june
2.2.1 is a revelation. I have put it on my galaxy s and its no longer laggy, really smooth, new market, lock screen wallpapers etc. Finally its transformed the phone into the powerhouse it always had the potential to be. I urge you all to get 2.2.1 ASAP!
has anyone heard any more speculation on what phones are gonna get gingerbread?
gingerbread is being skipped and is going to be 2.4 instead of 2.3. Still named gingerbread though. This is what I heard a few weeks back. It makes sense because the Nexus S is full of problems and it's mostly on the software side. Gingerbread is nothing but a themed froyo.
There are a lot less core differences between 2.2 and 2.3 than there were between 2.1 and 2.2. I would think the manufacturers would have an easier time upgrading them and the crapware on it.

Incorrect. There are other phones getting Android 2.3 besides the Nexus S; the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is, for example. Gingerbread has made quite a few changes to the underlying code & add many nice APIs for app developers to it.

True, but, don't know if you noticed that the Nexus One has yet to get an OTA Gingerbread OTA. There's a reason for that. The random rebooting issue could be to blame - but Google for Froyo (such a huge, huge change from 2.1 Eclair) pushed it out to Nexus One users like 2 weeks after announcing it. Huge. Quick.
Gingerbread will probably not come to existing devices. 2.4 (whether it is Ice Cream Sandwich or Gingerbread - who knows/cares) will probably be pushed out first. Don't expect any incremental updates to any existing device yet.
The reason the Xperia Play has 2.3 is because it's out in the AOSP and Sony Ericsson is just choosing to deploy the 2.3 code instead of 2.2. They have the right timeframe and want their device to appeal to the hardcore geeks.
Anyhow, no Gingerbread - especially not for the EVO 4G Shift anytime soon.
I'm hoping for updates to the Shift, i just got it, but i hate knowing there is a newer version somewhere lol
I hate knowing that I got gingerbread working on a 4 year old Windows Mobile phone (HTC Touch/Vogue) and yet it's not officially available for the Evo Shift. I may go AOSP in the future.

AOSP is default open source Android. Every manufacturer puts on their own overlay for HTC it is Sense and Motorola is Moto Blur. When you put an AOSP ROM on your phone it will be default android which is normally more efficient and more bare bones. For instance when you might not have all the functionality that you had with your stock setup. Personally I like how in Sense when I have my Google contacts set up in groups Sense se that and carries those groups over to my phone. When I put the evervolve or CM7 on my phone to test it out I lost that.
I don't know all the things that are different with an AOSP ROM but here are the things I have seen:
Contacts
Messaging app
Home Screen
Now I know there are more programs that are operate in the background that are included (just run titanium backup and look at all the ones that start with HTC) but I don't know what they do for the most part.
Also AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project.
I think I'll wait for a stable sense ROM to try gingerbread. I'm pretty sure I tried a bare bones ROM when I rooted my cliq and didn't like it. Definitely like having everything sync'd like contacts and such. Has anyone come up with something spectacular for a modded or themed stock ROM? Guess I could just go look...
Thanks everyone for the help. Really appreciate it.

What devices will not get Android 4.0?
We work hard to ensure each of our products has the optimal user experience and therefore some products will remain at their current version of Android. In general, devices with 512MB ROM or less will not be upgraded to Android 4.0. These devices include the HTC ChaCha, HTC Salsa, HTC Wildfire S, HTC Explorer, and others.
HTC tablets, including the HTC Flyer, HTC EVO View 4G, and HTC Jetstream, will remain on their current Android version (Honeycomb).
Upgrades are not the same thing as ongoing support. Devices not being upgraded to Android 4.0 will still get software improvements, security fixes, and technical support as needed.

Excuse me but isn't ROM the internal memory meaning we qualify" Or is it actually RAM? I'm confused. ROM is non-writable so it's definately not RAM...?
Why be care so much about rom? Isn't it ram they are concerned with?
But on topic htc is making a mistake here, even if they feel sense 4.x will be too slow they could bring just an aosp ics rom in, add their bloatware and our phone should be up to par with many phones currently running stock ics, and probably better than some. The g2/dz are not dinosaurs and developers have proved the stability porting ics here, this would be a mistake especially if we don't have a g3 soon... I wouldn't ming changing to a new manufacture if this is the case...

If this is the case:
ROM is "built-in" computer memory containing data that normally can only be read, not written to. ROM contains the programming that allows your computer to be "booted up" or regenerated each time you turn it on. Unlike a computer's random access memory (RAM), the data in ROM is not lost when the computer power is turned off. The ROM is sustained by a small long-life battery in your computer.
It means we will get ICS? We have 1.5GB of internal memory.
This is to my first point, its as if htc didn't edit their post

You need to read better.
HTC did not say that it will stop supporting these phones. they said that they will not get there ICS upgrade.
And about the Desire C and One V. Yes they are low spec phones with ICS but they have Sense 4.0, wich runs way faster then 3.6 ( wich older phones will be updated with ).
So newer phones Sense 4.0. Older phones 3.6.

Only our device is unique in the product lineup because it has a physical keyboard. You'll see the Mytouch 4G Slide has no ICS and it also has a keyboard and is a much more a capable device.
I'd say the actual problem is the software development required to engineer Sense 4.0 to our device. We have a very custom version of Sense 2.1 that features rotating widgets and keyboard optimisations which will be the reason our updates are out of the standard cycle, we didn't get Sense 3.x and probably won't get ICS.
Its not a matter of the device suitability, its all about the Sense interface and in all honesty its not worth HTC's development as they're reportedly not producing any more QWERTY phones.
If you want ICS, you'll be going down a ported ROM route.

All companies are in this to make money, and no money is to be made updating a phone that is nearing it's two year anniversary and has been discontinued. I say it all the time to people about Android phones, you buy one for what it has right now, not what it might get in the future. The most you can expect an OEM to support you is one major OS version, and that's what we got. They want you to buy a new phone, and there is no incentive if they keep you updated.
Apple does the same thing. Sure they update phones to a better version number, but they intentionally lock older phones out of new features to get you to upgrade. The only thing they care about is getting your $, all phone manufacturers are the same. That said, Sony has been stepping up their game lately.....
But if they don't make a new generation phone compareable to the one they refuse to update many will change to a new manufacture - in this case no g3 means die hard htc fans will no longer be that
