issues with 2.21 epic 4g upgrade - Epic 4G General

Hey guys, I'm very much a newbie here so bear with me. I upgraded to the 2.21version about a month ago when some upgrade came out. Thinking it was an official upgrade I did it. I flashed the phone and it seemed to work ok. The problem is the camera doesn't work rendering my bar code not to work either. It seems ok other than that item, but would really like to get the camera up and running, and since Samsung doesn't seem to have the real 2.2 upgrade any time in the near future, I would like to fix this without flashing it again. What can I do to fix? Phone info is Model number sph-d700 baseband version s:d700.0.55.dk28 kernel version 2.6.32.9 fyoyo.dk28
Thanks in advance
Mike

well, are you rooted? i would suggest you follow this guide to get back to stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773032&highlight=brick
and also, this thread will get moved because it is placed in the wrong section, just a heads up in case you come back and cant find it! it will be moved to the general section

Wow, lot to try and decipher. I'm not sure how or what I should do. everything works but the camera. Is this a bad build or bad software download?

well, are you rooted? it might just be the build. there are alot of different 2.2.1 builds out there for the epic. if you are rooted, you can just flash another rom, it will fix the issue. if you arent rooted, you will have to follow that guide to get back to stock. and i know its alot to decipher, but just take it ONE STEP AT A TIME. i would search for youtube videos on how to do it too, thats what helps me the most.

Ok, sorry for the dumb question, but how do I know if I am rooted?

download the app "superuser" from the market, then download "android terminal emulator" from the market, open the terminal emulator, type "su" hit enter, and if you are rooted, a pop up will come up and say "blabbity blah is asking for superuser permission, accept? hit accept. if it worked, you should see this in the terminal emulator now "#" without the quotes, that is how you know if you are rooted. if nothing happens in terminal emulator, you are not rooted.

If there is a newer version, I would not mind going to that, if there is. I did do this about a month ago.

even if there is, you would have to go back to stock and then flash it through odin man

It said "not found" in the blue screen of su. I can only post every 5 min, bear with me, and thanks again for the help. What's next? Ok, going back to stock would be fine till samsung finally goes to a new version. If I go back to stock, will I lose everything? I did download Ti backup and it doesn't work. It says "please verify if the rom is rooted". And then it doesn't work. I guess I could have checked there to see if it was rooted.

he does not have to "go back to stock" to flash a different 2.2 build through odin, im sorry but that made entirely no sense

Check this link
Here this link should give you a better understanding of how to go back to stock.

Look under the section for odin stock flashing. And btw DK28 is not officially by samsung. It is a leaked build and they do recommend against not installing it since it is not finalized. The current most official kernerl is DI18 so you should grab the tar.md5 for that rom version and flash back to stock using odin. If you still want to try unofficial froyo roms make sure you use the one click root and recovery method to make sure you are rooted after going back to stock DI18. Then you are free to flash any froyo roms you want. Hope this helps man.

my understanding of odin is that in order to update builds, you have to downgrade. like 3/4's of the roms here make you unroot/downgrade, then re-root in order to install them.

I have been flashing for a while and never had to downgrade to update builds. If you have already flashed to the leaked stock DK28 you can install as many DK28 based roms as you want through clockwork mod as long as you wipe data/cache. You are definitely right in regards that he should odin back to stock Eclair DI18 since he is having camera issues because that definitely might help as it has helped me many times.

Ok, is there a newer build than what I have now, and if I can run it, how do I do that? Thanks again guys for all the help. I really do appreicate it.
I don't mind trying newer builds, and since this build is well over a month old, I would think there would be newer ones, maybe?

Please post questions in General section.

Okay i think you may be a little confused. There is no newer build. There is ONE stock DK28 leaked build which is what i assume you have. Now there are custom roms BASED on that leaked build which have various customizations and whatnot. You are more than welcome to flash a custom rom of your liking but they are not "newer builds", just customized roms based from the ONE leaked DK28 build.

Your best bet is to go back to di18 and wait on the ota. Stay there a little bit and do some more reading and learn a little more before you start doing this stuff. Learn about rooting and flashing roms. If you didn't know if you were rooted or not then most likely you were not. Use Odin to go back to di18. I know ut sucks losing all your data but in doesn't take that long to set your phone back up. Good luck.

This guy is right. What you have is most likely the stock version of the DK28 build. That version is known to have many issues. Being on that stock build of DK28 according to the info you posted, you are welcome to flash a customized DK28 ROM that has addressed these issues.
Again, you will not be required to downgrade your build in order to flash any customized ROM based on the same build (DK28)
For practical purposes, to flash (install) a custom ROM you WILL be required to be "rooted" and install a program onto your phone that gives you the ability to flash. The program that is universally used is called "ClockworkMod Recovery" and employs a simple "one-click" method to install onto your phone. This one-click method also gives you the root access on your phone that is required to flash a ROM. You can find the program and instructions on how to install it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
Customized ROMs can be found in the Epic 4G Android Development section of this forum. Note that you will ONLY be looking for ROMs based on your DK28 build. ALL of these ROMs will require you (on your stock DK28 build) to do a complete wipe of the data from your phone. Your data can and should be backed up however, and the ClockworkMod Recovery mentioned above allows you to do both the data backup and data wipe.
Instructions on how to install ROMs are often included in their post. They should look something like this:
1. Download the DK28 ROM you want (it will come in .zip format) and move the .zip file to main (base/root) folder of your phone's SD card.
2. Using ClockworkMod Recovery, BACKUP your data by selecting "Backup and Restore" and then "Backup"
3. Using ClockworkMod Recovery, WIPE your data by doing ALL of following:
a. Select "wipe data/factory reset". Do this three times (3x)!
b. Select "wipe cache partition". Do this three times (3x)!
c. Select "advanced" and then "wipe dalvik cache". Do this three times (3x)!
4. Using ClockworkMod Recovery, FLASH (install) the ROM you downloaded by selecting "Install zip from sdcard" and then selecting the ROM's .zip file in the root folder of your sd card.
5. Using ClockworkMod Recovery, select "reboot system now" and WAIT for phone to boot. This will take longer than a normal boot up.
I find these ROMs work well for me:

He does not have to flash the DK28 modem because he's already on it. This is indicated by his baseband version being S:d700.0.5S.DK28

Help needed: New User

I just bought my Epic 4G a few days ago and quickly discovered the existence of rooting and custom ROMS. Needless to say I took the plunge the other day.
I attempted to install the Epic Experience Froyo yesterday but it doesn't seem to load up properly.
Seemed simple enough. I boot into clockwork, I cleared data/factory cache, cache partition, and davnik cache three times each. I installed the ROM from my SD card, install says it's successful, so I hit the reboot.
After this I expect my new rom to load up but all that happens is the samsung logo comes up for about a minute, phone reboots again and goes into the factory Android system recovery utility.
Any ideas? Please help, my phone is inoperable at the moment.

Sounds like kernel. Dl a costume kernel and flash it thru cwm.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I'll have to apologize ahead of time because I'm completely new to rooting.
Which kernel should I use (a link to one with instructions would be helpful), and how do I get it on my SD card if it isn't booting up? (my pc doesn't have an SD card reader)
Did you first use odin to install the DK17 modem and kernel through odin? That might be the step youmissed because if you just flashed straight from stock 2.1 to epic experience you need the updated froyo modem and kernel. Check here if you're still confused.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
So, flash Odin/DK17 and then flash Epic Experience over this?
Ya also did you first do the one click root method to make sure you are definitely rooted? If you press. Volume down + camera button + power when booting and the letters are blue you are NOT rooted. If they are green then you are rooted. Sometimes when you install a rom it might take away your root so you might try doing it in the order of this:
1. Flash back to stock 2.1
2. Do theone click root method
3. Flash DK17 modem through odin
4. Install Epic Exprience

I went straight from 2.1 to 2.2 firmware without using odin or anything of the sort. Will I notice a difference? If so what difference will it make and can I just install DK17 modem and kernel or do I have to revert back to 2.1 first?

Hm that is interesting. When i first made the mistake of going from to a 2.2 rom without upgrading the modem my cell & data service wouldn't work. It kept looping on and off and would not stick. Maybe it depends what rom you went to as maybe some require the modem as mandatory and others do not? I am not sure. But if its working for you, you should just be able to flash the DK17 through odin without going back to 2.1.

Go to settings -> about phone and then check where it says "Baseband version" it should say DK17 in there. If it doesnt follow these instructions to download the files you need. It has step by step directions
http://www.nomie.mobi/how-to-install-dk17-modem-samsung-epic/
I assume this is the rom you flashed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=856715
In the first post it has a link to the instructions to properly flash the rom. You can use those instructions to flash the modem and see if it fixes your problem. You might be better off just flashing everything again. It would mean downloading odin and the files to your pc and flashing them to your phone from your pc. The simplest way to do this is follow this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Follow the instructions carefully and when your done you have the new modem, the froyo rom, clockwork recovery, and be rooted.

I actually skipped step 2 and everything went fine for me. My laptop was being an asshole and not seeing the phone, so the 1 click root script simply wasn't working.. but then I realized that the DK17 flash via Odin that I got form the epic experience thread included clockworkmod and was pre-rooted and everything so I saw that step as unnecessary.

[Q] Preparing for Gingerbread with custom ROM installed

Hey guys,
I am running a custom ROM at the moment (MIUI), but I'd like to receive the Gingerbread OTA update when it is available. What do I need to do in order to receive this notification? Do I need to restore stock recovery? Go back to Froyo, etc?
Any help would be appreciated.. thanks!
Revert completely to stock FRG83D
I had heard something about the update failing without stock recovery.. any merit to this?
Or you could wait for someone to root 2.3...but that would still involve you wiping MIUI and such, but youll keep your root if that matters to you
Easier option is get it from this forum...as soon as it is out someone should have repacked it so that it can be flashed with a custom recovery..
Other option is to restore ur phone to stock rom and recovery.

Is there an easy way to revert back to stock from cyanogenmod 6.1? I would like to be able to update to gingerbread OTA.

If you don't already have it, get ROM Manager from the Market. Install that and install the Recovery it suggests. I think it suggests Clockwork, that's what I have.
Then, when someone posts the update.zip file, put it on your SD card somewhere. Open Rom Manager and tell it to do an update, point it to the update.zip file you just put there and wait for it to reboot a couple times. Enjoy. It's pretty easy now.
I'd wait for a rooted version of 2.3 though. That way you can keep Rom Manager and then switch to whatever Rom you want.

[Q] Few questions about custom Epic ROMs

i have the HTC EVO and have been running Flipz FreshROM since he first put out his custom EVO ROM and even used his HERO ROMs before that. my wife has an Epic now, which i rooted back in October. she's currently running the last official update from Samsung (DI18, i believe) and i wanted to update her to the latest release (DK28).
what are the best custom ROMs to use that are based off of the DK28 update?
is it best just to update to DK28, then root and not worry about a custom ROM?
in order to update to DK28, do i have to unroot first or is there an already unrooted DK28 ROM that i could flash?
thanks for the help.

In my opinion, different people will have different opinions regarding which ROM is the "best". User experience can vary from person to person. What may not be an issue to one person may be a deal breaker for another.
I would recommend trying each until you find one that meets your needs. To update to DK28, I would recommend following this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
Couldnt be easier. If you find that you have issues with DK28, use ODIN to get back to 2.1 and then reroot. The process is simple and easy to find if you search. Personally, the second time I tired DK28, I used ODIN to go back to stock 2.1, then used the link above to go to DK28. I would also recommend giving your phone a few days to adjust to 2.2. This helped some of my issues work themselves out.
Use odin to flash the dk28 modem first. I can't post links yet but look in the ViperRom thread for a good zip of Odin with the dk28 modem and the correct Pit file. Unzip everything, untar the modem.tar. Turn off your phone. Boot while holding the 1 key down (you get a Yellow Icon in the middle of the screen). Run Odin, Place the modem.bin file in the PHONE slot in odin, put the .PIT file in the PIT slot in odin. Plug the phone into the computer. Odin will see your phone as a COM# port, any number is fine. Auto-Reboot and F.Reset Time should be the ONLY things checkmarked in options. Click start.
Its complicated but it works pretty good. The phone will restart and run with the DI18 and the DK28 modem. Get a GPS Lock in Navigation or Google Maps on the phone, make sure it locks! Skipping this step has led to some people not being able to get locks with the internal gps on epics with dk28.
Apply the oneclick root found in the forums (Android Developement).
Pick a rom, i think Bonsai 1.04 is very stable and pretty with its elegant font.. not so strongly masculine like some of the custom roms. Download the rom and put it on the sdcard, boot into clockwork (volume down, camera and the power button simultaneously) and wipe / factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache. Flash the rom...zip off the sdcard and then reboot.
Yes you can flash directly dk28 with modem using ODIN.. I tried the OTA zip on a stock DI18 and couldn't get that to work for me. But when I went direct to dk28 from di18 i lost gps.
Anyway, just my story, and what I did. I love my custom rom, but it took me hours to figure it out. I hope these instructions are complete and errorfree, but it would be a good idea to read forum threads about this stuff besides just what I have to say. ViperROM's thread was especially helpful with the odin use stuff. There is a wiki about it too, but im not allowed to post links, oops.
I don't know if it was just me but I immediately jumped on the DK28 band wagon, and yes it was cool but for me it was somewhat unstable. My Wifi was borked, sometimes it'd go on perfect, other times I'd hit the widget in the pulldown, and it'd sit there green and do nothing. i'd have to go into the Settings -> Wifi and it'd say "Error". So like I said I don't know if it was just me cause everyone else here loves it. Anyway just thought I'd let you know!
Good luck!

if i'm wiping everything and flashing a custom DK28-based ROM, do i need to unroot, flash the stock DK28, re-root and then flash? or could i just wipe the current state of her Epic and flash the Bonsai ROM? i know with my EVO that i have to update the baseband/radio separately from the ROM, but whenever i want to update my EVO, i just wipe and re-flash the new ROM.

Check out Quantum rom, with EXT4..Just did my wifes epic,no issues at all....BTW i run fresh 3.5, good rom....
I have a question about roms and the (eventual) update to official froyo...will those of us on DK28 need to flash back to use custom roms or will we be able to simply odin a new modem and install a new rom? Or better yet, not have to odin anything and just be able to flash in CWM.

Help with custom roms...

Hi, I'm just getting the hang of tweaking my x10. So far I've flashed a stock rom, rooted it, installed a stock theme and installed jit. But I don't bags a clue how I'm gonna install a custom rom. Can someone help me?
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
First install busybox from the market.
Download xrecovery...its in the x10 development thread and install it.
Download a custom rom for your x10 and place it somewhere on your sdcard.
Reboot your phone and as soon as you see the sony ericsson logo start pressing the back button a few times (3 times).
You will now enter the xrecovery menu.
Go to backup an restore and backup your current rom.
When your done do a factory reset and a wipe cache partition.
Go to advanced option and wipe the dalvik cache.
Go back to the main menu using your back key and select install custom rom.
Select choose rom from sdcard and go to the custom rom you downloaded and install it.
When done reboot phone and your done.
Volume buttons let you scroll in the xrecovery menu's...the centre button is enter.
If you go for a 2.2 or 2.3 rom do not install jitt on it...it allready has it so if you install it your phone will go into a reboot loop.
If you don't like the rom install another or restore your 2.1 rom with the backup you made...select the restore option in xrecovery.
Have fun..btw freex10 beta 4 and tripmiui are really good 2.2 roms to use.
sent from my phone x10 thingy device kinda something
just search for x10_music.apk
install that app and you're good to go

I forgot to ask one thing...
My android version is 2.1 update 1 (is this the same as 2.1.1?), and baseband 2.1.54 and version number 2.1.A.0.435. Do custom roms have any restrictions based on the mentioned specs? Or can I install any custom rom on my android version?

Yeah 2.1 update 1 means 2.1.1.
Custom ROMs usually require some specific basebands. If you flash a ROM that is not compatible with the baseband, it will not function properly e.g you wont get any signals, will keep rebooting, etc.

You can change basebands using flashtool. Here is a guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343
Collection of basebands:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960527
Also if you are on a 2.2 ROM and wish to flash another 2.2 ROM which is on another baseband, and you do not want to flash the required baseband, check out the baseband patch (details are carefully explained in the thread) here:

Ok, I've found the customs on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11988762#post11988762
But some of them have a type of baseband that I'm not understanding, like CM6, CM7, and MiUI.
Could someone explain this to me?
Those are the name of the roms. If you read the threads they'll tell you the which baseband you need. I'm using MIUI and it uses 2.049 or 2.052

Rom installations / flashing conformity.

This is probably just me but I'm starting to think we are over complicating the ROM installation process by having different versions of recovery and flashing. We already have KIES and odin, do we need different recovery installations too?, tegrak, CMR, chainfires etc? We are now seeing ROMS that can only be flashed with one type which cant be good as its causing fragmentation of development. I may also have contributed to two people who have bricked their phones recently.
Why on earth are we doing this?, wouldnt it be much better to use one type of recovery, that way anyone can flash any ROM with it without having to change root / kernels etc.
I am sure each different version has its own advantages but are these really worth the fragmentation it is causing, be nice if devs all decided to get together and come up with a one fits all CWR which is then used on all ROMS and all Phones.
I can dream cant I, feel free to put me straight on this if I am missing something here.
couldn't agree more. i rooted my phone the other day with a kernel change, but now i want to isntall a rom but cant even start to work out the way to get cwm on to flash a rom!!! annoyinh to say the least.... the x10 and sgs1 i had were a breeze

But everyone is using CWM anyway...
And the .zip is a standard way to flash a ROM. So in theory, you can use any recovery to flash your zip
So there's no need to come up with some one-size-fits-all, as the zip files used meet a standard
Freedom to choose is a great thing. I like having options.

I am currently using cognition ROM, are you suggesting I can download any ROM, say Villain and copy to my SD and install without doing anything else?, I dont think that is the case, it mentions a different root, as does extreme. Cog and mui have no mention of changing root.

It is yes, however you seem to have misunderstood the thread, having different methods being forced up you by different cooks is not choice, choice would be that all methods were compatible and interchangeable, they are not apparently. Some require different roots / kernels.
EDIT. not suggesting anything is really being forced on us, I appreciate all dev work, just hoping for a bit more conformity of installation process.

You copy it to internal SD, pull your head out of your ass, turn phone off, turn phone on holding menu and volume up and choose to flash zip from SD card.
Just.

Cognition uses CMR root, Villain uses CF-root, I am pretty sure you cannot flash Villain straight of the top of a non CF rooted phone, or I am wrong?

See, if you actually had developed the ability to read, you would know that all root is is the su script in the ROM and SuperUser.apk, nothing more.
You would also know root has nothing to do with flashing ROMs, since you can have CWM as recovery without having root.
Now if you're flashing an entirely different ROM you might want to select "wipe data/factory reset" before flashing but you can still flash using CWM.
Turn phone off, turn phone on holding volume up and center button, select wipe data/factory reset, and then flash zip from SD card.
Wow. He's just asking a question. Why belittle people for asking?

Because I see exactly 3 threads on the same page that could either answer his question or link him to the answer. But people are too lazy to read.
Due to people like this we have a thread here which isn't needed at all since there is conformity to flashing across all ROMs. All because people make claims about things when they don't even know how it works.
The big difference in swapping from one custom rom to another is not the method of flashing but do you need a clean phone to install a custom rom on top of another one .
My personal choice is a fully wiped phone before installing a new custom rom .
Methods CWM or Odin mostly CWM as thats the major choice for devs .Kies is not a rom flash tool .
Choice also gives a better recovery option .
Villain on top of or below Cognition both use same flash method via rooted CWM flash .
The problem on this forum is not three or four choices but a complete refusal by many to even bother reading any instructions .

You have to change kernel at the end of flash on Villain which I suppose isnt the same but is still a difference in installation process
what about touch extreme, whats this about then?
Make sure you got CF Root CWM (not the clockworkmod root) go into CWM, flash zip file, done! its that simple!
PS. some roms out there installs through clockworkmod, not the one by Chainfire, in those cases you must flash Chainfires Root with his version of CWM first!

So let me see, it says flash the .zip with CWM.
So... Lets turn phone off, turn phone on holding volume up, center button and power button, wipe data/factory reset, and then flash .zip from SD card.
All of a sudden it magically works.
PROTIP: They're talking about the CWM app, which you don't need, every ROM still has clockworkmod recovery installed so rebooting with volume up, center button and power button will always let you flash the .zip file.
Kernel files should always be flashed with Odin if you are flashing them seperately since it gives better security. Even if they have a flashable .zip.
It may seem like there are a hundred different versions of CWM recovery but they're all based on the same thing; CWM. They all work on the same premise of copying the zip to the phone and then flashing. Some have integrated apps, some don't but the basic premise remains. The other option is Odin/Heimdall but as one is .tar based and the other is .zip there shouldn't be too much confusion here

what does this actually mean then?
"Make sure you got CF Root CWM (not the clockworkmod root)"
I have flashed all three roms using the exact same method .
Changed kernels four times this week using CWM .
Revived one bricked phone using Odin .

which kind of proves my point really, if they all do the same thing then there is no need for them and no need to stipulate their usage, it just makes flashing more confusing for noobs.

No, there is only 1 method for ROM flashing, CWM. Every ROM has CWM, CWM is the end all be all for you, no matter what different apps do, they all use 1 method CWM. CWM CWM CWM. Stop being dense and read up before posting dumb factually wrong claims.
Every single ROM can be flashed by holding volume up, center button and power, how difficult is it to grasp this concept?
Here this video should help you.
