Getting a surround (question!) - Surround General

So how is the full speaker is it that great?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

i ordered the phone online without seeing it in real life first.. it was thicker heavier and generally bigger than i expected.. also thought it seemed weird that only a speaker slid out and not a keyboard..
i was considering returning it but i decided against it. the on screen keyboard is good enough and the speaker has been clutch on multiple occasions.. when my friend didnt have a car stereo and when everyone was too lazy and stoned to get up and put music on
so yea speaker is cool for when you need somewhat loud sound.. dont expect a great battery life doing that though

dont listen to him,
haha its a pretty good phone
the speakers pretty sick with the stand great for showing off/playing music for your friends

woah i didnt expect this thread would be graced by the presence of a senior member!!! BOW DOWN TO THE MAGNIFICENT SQUIDBUTT.. lol.. what if he doesnt have friends did you ever think of that?? jerk

Quite an improvement over the old Fuze (TP) even with the lack of a slideout keyboard. I do like the speaker as it has been clutch for me as well for a few phone calls, some decent music and NFS. Other games are good with it too.
PS: Empire6, now you have a retired moderator in here. Behave, LOL.

Evo Speaker Fails.

So I'm on my second Evo. The first one's speaker blew out within the first two weeks I had it, I went to Best Buy and they exchanged my black Evo for a white one, no questions asked. Now I have my white Evo, and guess what, the speaker blew out. It happens very incrementally. And what's worse is I switched from Best Buy's insurance to Sprints, and I've been told that Sprint won't replace your Evo if its speaker is blown out. Pretty lame.
So what gives? Why are these speakers going out so fast? I've seen a few reports of blown out speakers here. It's kinda' sad that such an awesome phone possesses such a bunk speaker. I'd rather have my old G1's speaker than this pathetic sack of cat ****. Lol
This is a sort of rant/question hybrid. Wasn't sure where to put it. Sorry.

That'd be the external speaker on the back of the phone.
I've been on YouTube many times, its the spot to be. My speakers are fine!!
I have to chalk this one up as user error to happen twice so fast..I use the back speaker a lot and the only time i have issues where i think its going to blow is while useing Fring.
Mine started sounding like crap and I was really disappointed. I took off the battery cover and found pocket lint on the speaker. badabing - fixed. That speaker is small, so if anything gets on it, it will be distorted.

I agree for the most part, unless it is just completely coincidental that you had to bad speakers in the first place.
The reason I say this is because if you did a pole on here, I would guess that at least 97 - 99% of people have not had issues with the speaker.
But, some people do have bad luck when it comes to electronics, so you may have just gotten 2 defective phones. You should be able to call HTC and get it exchanged as long as it isnt more than 30 days old (or something like that)

Glad that worked for ya', sadly, it hasn't worked for me. That was the first thing I checked when it started happening. My speaker isn't slightly jacked, it sounds like a fly. Like if you try and strum a guitar that still has a pick wedged on the neck between the strings. It's -really- bad.
And as for chalking it up as a user error, you could in fact be right. As I listen to some very loud, very obnoxious music. Dead Moon, Crass, and Gray Matter seem to be what really take a toll on my speaker. If listening to loud music is a crime, I am most definitely guilty.
yah, you might be better off investing is some good headphones or a little speaker dock. I could see some Gray Matter at full blast taking a toll on the evo speaker quickly.

Speaker 101 (all speakers)
Distortion blows speaker, not amplitude. The trouble with that is it is hard to tell recorded distortion from speaker distortion. Add to that, even recorded distortion can fairly easily overheat the coil, resulting in a crappy sounding speaker.
I'd try for another replacement, then use only headphones... good ones.

+1 to this. Speaker dock or some good wired headphones coupled with an E5 amplifier. You will never listen to the speaker on the back again.
I'm on my second speaker and it just started crackling again so back to get a 3rd one put in!
user error? Seriously, how would that even be possible. Speakers aren't supposed to blow themselves out on a PHONE.
My rear one went out after 2 weeks too. What was i doing? Nothing, i barely use my rear speaker at all.

[Q] Sound when speaker is closed?

Hey guys i'm thinking of getting the surround and wanted to ask people who already have it what happens when you play music/phone rings when the phone is closed? Does the sound come from the hidden speakers? won't that sound muffled? or what? thx!
From what I can tell, even when the phone is closed the sound still comes from the same speakers. So the sound does seem muffled by the front plate of the phone. However, the quality of the sound is still great for a phone even with the speaker closed. If I'm listening to something, I usually leave the speaker slid out though.

So it sounds like you like your phone! would you recommend it?
and on a related note, why is there a speaker grill on the back of the phone too? (see attached pic)
I like the weight and feel of the phone compared to the other thiner/lighter models. It feels like a solid well made phone. I definitely use my phone more for music now and really like the Zune integration. The large speaker bar provides crisp clear sound that remains clear at the highest volume. There are three different sound modes (changed by pressing the silver square button on the speaker bar): Normal, Dolby Mobile, and SRS Enhanced.
Overall I like the Surround, I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of customization (true for all WP7 devices) but I expect that will improve over time. I'm also looking forward to some more great apps.
As for the back cover, that appears to be a vent hole as there is no speaker (at least visibly) behind it.
If you are going to get a WP7 and enjoy using your phone for music/media then I think the Surround is a great choice.
Also found this review which has some good pictures of the back cover removed.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4015/htc-surround-review-pocket-boombox
Hey there,
You don't really notice any muffling of the sound until you slide the speaker out, and even though, I wouldn't say it makes a HUGE difference - a difference yes. I think the phone, while it has a nice solid quality feel, is a bit thick for my liking. Coming from an iPhone 4, then Samsung Galaxy S (super thin), and now this, the Surround almost feels like the Tilt 2. I just ordered the Samsung Focus (I think the HD7 is awesome, but I wouldn't be able to enjoy 3G since I'm on AT&T). I hope the Focus is thinner.
That speaker looking grill is just that, it allows the sound to have an alternative venue to escape in the event that the speakers are covered. Thats what helps keep the sound crisp and clear when the phone is in the closed position. Think if it as a ported sub-woofer box... Well at least thats what the HTC rep told me

I thought that's what it was for too, but I don't know if it's very helpful.
If you get this phone and use the alarm like me, just get use to leaving the speaker open. It's not really a big deal.
speaker sound
The speakers sound FINE whether open or closed. There is a grill on the back that helps when the case is closed. I think all this stems from a couple of dim witted no talent reviewers who trashed the entire phone on this one caveat.
Despeite what a few of them say, the phone has great audio, great video, great everything, the phone is NOT bulky, the screen is plenty bright with good saturation, the zune software does a great job of converting videos.
The only limitations of the phone are those of the OS and that will certainly improve over time. In fact there are already 2500 apps available, many for free, that extend the abilities of the phone and you can bet your whiskers MS is working on upgrades right now. Someone just put out an app where you can vote on what improvements you want to see next. There are new apps appearing every day so having the phone is fun....that's what we do here...tinker and maximize our toys until the next one comes out ))))

Not to be a pain, but can you stay on topic? We are talking about the sound when you do not slide the speaker out. No offense intended, just saying...
I failed to mention that the sound is definitely muffled when closed. Is it still loud? Yes, it's fine, but definitely better when slid out.

Atrix speaker

Its been said many times before, but I'm at the beach streaming music and the sound quality is SUPERB. no need to ever bring a stereo to the beach ever again.

I agree also, I stream music all day at work.

i must admit, the speaker on the atrix is pretty awesome. the only thing i dont like is theres only one of them. ive noticed that a lot of new smartphones only seem to be packing a mono speaker nowadays.
on my old n900, there were two speakers. sure, the clarity at high volumes doesnt compare to that of the speaker on my atrix, but the stereo speakers were particularly good at filling up an entire room. ah well, maybe motorola will throw in an extra speaker with the successor to the atrix whenever its announced.
IPhone sounds way better IMO. Louder and clearer. I tried to battle my dad one day with the same songs. Iphone was superb. And. I am an iphone hater. Fir the record.

Try not to be offended
But you guys are proving why Am radio endured against FM Stereo for so many years, and why mono "HiFi" endured on phonographs.
You've got tin ears.
The speaker on the Atrix may sound OK to you, and that's just fine. It is after all intended ot be a "communications grade" speaker and telephony and radio communications pretty much only covers a narrow range from 300-3000 Hertz.
Good audio equipment covers 20-20,000 Hz. and people with good ears can usually hear over 15,000Hz without any trouble. On the other hand, too many rock concerts or plain old age can cut you down to a 50db hearing loss at 5000 Hz, worse above that, and 50db is A LOT.
The Atrix speakers are not awesome. They are not audio quality. Listen to your Atrix, plug in a decent pair of earphones and listen again. If you can't tell the difference...you've got tin ears.
The good news is, you'll never be bothered by ultrasonic traffic detectors and burglar alarms. Which some of us can hear as an almost painful annoying whine.
It's not SuperPhone. Moto didn't bless it with audiophile quality speakers. It beats the old 9v-transistor AM radio...it beats the old Philips CarryCorder, which was revolutionary in the late 60's. But awesome?
Guys, you need to raise the bar!

swanga, you don't need thousand dollar equipment to hear the difference. $50 earphones, $100 earphones...you'll hear it unless you have hearing loss. Same thing in speakers, a $100 pair of small speakers will be a day/night difference.
Good audio, by any standards, from a speaker the size of my fingernail is a laugh. good audio from a speaker that size, loud enough to be heard at a beach over the ambient sounds...ROFLMAO.
More important is the question of the internal digital to analog conversion, and curiously enough NO PHONE MAKER including Apple for their iPod, discusses the quality or lack of quality in that critical audio component.
The thousand-dollar alleged audiophile companies....some of them are in another reality too. No need to go there.<G>

I think what people are saying is that the audio is pretty great for a phone speaker.
Unless I missed something, I don't recall anyone saying they would be ditching their Senheissers to listen to music on the phone speaker. For what it is, it is pretty darn good. Why do people have to act like such snobs sometimes?
Edit:

Well of course a phone speaker is going to suck compared to anything actually meant to play music. But in all practicality the speaker is good enough to have music playing in the background. You don't always need audiophile quality and this is coming from someone who has spent wayyyyy to much money on various pieces audio equipment.
And as for the DAC its actually quite decent. Its a lower level wolfson chip which is way better then most phones expect for the GSII. And the reasons companies don't talk about that particular spec is the relatively small number of people who care about it.
Don't go trashing on people who are enjoying an aspect of a product that they wouldn't have expected. Yeah sure its might be frustrating that some people don't know the joys of high end audio. But despite popular belief being an audiophile does not require you to be condescending about your knowledge. Its way more rewarding for me to have someone under the impression that beats by dre are the best thing since sliced bread listen to my beyerdynamic dt770s and see their jaw drop then to tell them they are ignorant and wasted their money.
All of what you said was technically correct but you can bet that most people here will write you off as just another pretentious audiophile with the way you said it.
"Don't go trashing on people who are"
Personally I'd only trash a troll. And I'm not the one who brought thousand-dollar audio into this.
But to call this audio "awesome", either someone IS a troll, or they're just a newb that needs to put it in perspective. Perspective is good, trolls are bad. Whether "awesome" being not awesome is a good thing, bad thing, or just a speed bump...anyone getting bent out of shape to hear that this is not awesome aduio by any of today's standards, has other issues.
So let's focus back on the reality of the Atrix speaker quality and leave the rest to Lucy's Nickel Therapy Stand.
..................
I find that while streaming audio at the beach, audio quality is greatly imroved by placing your Atrix in a plastic cup and into a hole in the sand dug out to the depth and width of a Paradigm Signature S8 speaker.
Sure, you lose a little depth of sound but the increase in mid tones and bass is amazing.
Chill out guys!

I think you are the one that needs some perspective. Nobody is saying that the speakers audio quality is as good as $100 speakers, they're saying that the audio on the atrix is 'awesome' for a smartphone. Comparing the speaker with some other smartphones out there and I tend to agree, the speaker is great.

The sacrifices of water-proofing not worth it.

The first thing that lured me into buying the Xperia Z is now the reason I want rid of the phone.. The flaps are driving me mad and the poor call quality in crowded places and rubbish speaker is useless, I can't hear anyone on the phone if I'm outdoors, the fact is; the One thing I needed and expected the phone to do was be able to make a call and hear the person I'm speaking too..
It's a good phone, but between the call problems, the battery over heating and those awful flaps it's a bit of a nightmare. It's only been 1 month, but thank goodness I'm only on a 12 month contract.. If this is the "best of Sony in a smartphone" then god help them.
buy an headset :good:
thanks for posting that out, I'm about to buy this phone and you really made me think this through..
If any body else has some opinions on the subject, please do share!
I find the earpiece volume and clarity to be absolutely fine and can hear people even in the most loud of situations including roadworks outside where I work. Stop dunking it and try another providers SIM card as some are quieter than others.
Also edit the sound settings under phone and you can make it even clearer.
Bluetooth is the way to go-to avoid the flaps although I have no issues with them
I think it's worth it.
Hell, it's raining right now while I'm typing this. And the phone is perfectly fine
as much as it saddens me to say this but i agree also. beautiful phone in terms of looks but way too many cons. poor wifi poor call quality and web experience is big no no. now just have to decide between htc one or galaxy s4

Clear Phase isn't supposed to lower ambiant noise while using the phone call ? I have no problem with my XZ when making phone calls.
And they gave a good headset with it...
no disrespect intended but your mad i have to turn the volume down just so the person next to me hears my private phone call. i really have no problem with it and was afraid of the call quality before i bought it becasue of the forums complaining but honestly my ear volume is turned half way down.
I do agree with most of the people on here about the speaker its a little low but im i just bought bluetooth speakers and run it through that phone is really good imho it beats any other phone out there in design alone, i know if i bought the samsung galaxy s 4 i would never be as happy as what i am with the xperia z but thats just me.
i hate rounded curves and the look of samsung galazy series just dosnt do it for me at all im still in awe when i see my xperia z on the coffee table the way it sits there its amazing i know i will never get sick of it.
to the people who are wanting to buy the phone but who are afraid because of a few negative reviews and a few trolls dont be afraid you will love it

Some issues with the display but has been fixed by white balance app,
now it just the placement of the loudspeaker & the quality of sound coming from it making me a little bit disappointed even tho sony is an expert in speaker n sound.

I don't agree with OP.
Phone volume is just fine, sometimes I use headsets. Also have a charging dock.
Flaps don't bother me one bit and the phone looks so sleek with them.
to get anything good you need to sacrifice something, For me extra care with flaps is what i dont mind. now i dont have to bother taking care of my phone in the heavy rains in india. Call volume is good for me, loudspeaker volume maybe less, but i only use loudspeaker for my wake up alarms and it does the job well. so i have no complains other then the lagging camera.
I find the flaps annoying so have a charging dock as a result it's rare that I need to open flaps
I do however find call quality perfectly fine and even the load speaker is ok for a phone

Why Samsung? Why? speaker on the back? I love the note 4 the only really negative thing I have to say is why the speaker on the back of the device and not on the bottom like my note 3 ? I'm already finding myself laying the phone face down on the beautiful screen to hear any type of music, potentially scratching the screen. Sorry just ranting
Poor you... I wish I had your problems. Nevermind that a cellphone speaker sounds like complete garbage no matter where it's positioned. Maybe you should return the Note 4 and get a boombox instead.

You can edit the mixer_paths.xml and boost you speaker if you are rooted. I know it isnt really fix for the speaker but since you cant physically move the speaker to a new position , its all you really got . For me personally it doesnt make a difference but Im not coming from the Note 3 , Im coming from the GS5 which has the same speaker position.
HTC is the only company that got it right.

Sorry im not a audiophile I guess like yourself, sounds doesn't sound that bad to me the speaker placement was a horrible choice should've just left it on the bottom like the note3 would of been way better than where its at now. Im wondering if they did that because of the finger print scanner.

Not having stereo on the X was disappointing but then again not really a big deal on a device that's so small. We'll see how the 6 fairs
the note 4 isnt geared towards sound hence, why samsung doesnt waste R&D on speakers that most people rarely use. I rarely use my speakers on my notes. If im not bluetoothed or streaming, its on silent. lol
The speaker on the Note 4 is clearer and louder than that on the Note 3. Fact.

When at work, I lay my phone face up on a pack of sticky notes.

You won't scratch the screen from putting it screen down on a table. Gorilla glass is amazing man! I do agree that speakers on the rear suck though.

I have to agree there, I feel if i need to blast music they would be attach to some form of speaker lol. other wise, the sound is being stream through my bluetooth...or being stream to my tv lol
I hear there is a patent that stops them from putting it on the front.... Not 100% sure but I guess it's possible. I agree it's stupid being on the back but this Note 4 is a beast. I came from a Galaxy S5.
For me the speakers are perfect since I hold my phone with one hand and two i usually have a finger in the bottom holding the phone up and it used to cover the bottom speakers on my note 3, I sounds good and clear what do you expect surround sound.

Moto g 2014 also.

Has any phone ever used the front speaker for calls and system/media audio? I would think it would be pretty obvious to move the back speaker to the front and control the volume with software depending on if your in a call or playing music or whatever.

The speaker is really the only thing left in the Note series that could really use some improvement. Everything gets incremental upgrades except for the speaker.
the speaker on the back is lame imo, but it does sound very good-so not sure how much I can really complain. It is very loud using speakerphone speaker and the ringtone/alarm. Certainly better than the Note 2/3 that I owned.
the HTC M* is still the best for media output for youtube or other video playback. I still wish HTC would have made a M8 5.97" phone.
The biggest problem with a rear speaker, is that when the phone is lying on it's back, the sound gets extremely muffled. This is especially true when using a case. Horrible, horrible design choice by Samsung.
