Just wondering what you think the future holds for the Streak or if there will be a future for it especially with AT&T. Will the Streak make it to Android 2.3 or 3.0? Is it considered an HD device? Will there be more accesories for it?
I ask cause I am ready to give up my 3 year old Tilt and the Streak is tops on my list for a new phone. Just wanna have something thats gonna be worth my 2 year contract commitment. Also considering waiting for something new but not sure whats coming out in 2011 for AT&T.
I am wondering the same thing. I have a tilt2 and i need to make a move. Been running xaandroid for the last 4 months ready for an android device. Size and lack of keyboard are holding me back right now.
dual core tegra phones are coming in 2011. If you can wait, and don't mind possibly something smaller (there are rumors of a Streak 2 but nothing even remotely concrete as far as I know) I would wait until summer.
The 2011 CES (Consumer Electronic Show) starts in about a week. I am sure there will be all sorts of announcements from all major vendors, Dell included. So I would look at the prospects then and evaluate the decision. I certainly hope that Streak gets a 2.3 and 3.0 upgrades in the future. Maybe they will just skip 2.3 and go straight to 3.0? Wishful thinking I know
I hope it gets it. It would be a shame if it didn't get it. I just got the streak unlocked. LOL.

Having DJ_Steve around right now at least guarantees 2.3. Hopefully he keeps his Streak around until 3.0 comes out. I worry that once he gets a new and more interesting device, he will stop developing his ROMs.
I almost bought one right after I posted this. A co-worker got the Samsung Epic and it made me jealous as hell. I got a $25 Best Buy gift card and I was gonna use it on the $99 Streak deal that they have. I held out in the end thought.
Froyo reviews says that its even faster with the update.
Streak 2 is 7in so may be a bit to big who knows but the streak will not die as the Medical staff in the USA are getting them and i just read a report that the USA Army are now Testing them
Plus now it has 2.2 on Board it is blowing everything else out of the water in all Tests

I was using the Tilt2, and the Tilt before that. I bought my white streak on Dec 23rd, and there is no way I will ever go back to it. I had been holding back for a phone with a physical keyboard, but also as at least a 4.3" screen on AT&T. Been waiting for 1-1/2 years and decided it was never going to happen. Looking to sell both of them. Can't wait for 2.2..
just add a phisycal keyboard to the streak and it will be the perfect device

buy a blue tooth keyboard wouldnt that work?
i think dell streak is going to last long.
THey have just released it in the asian market. Do u think they are going to stop making more in less than a month of release.
I am also pretty sure that they will release gingerbread for streak.
The support for dell streak from dell is pretty good.
We do have some people in twitter who have helped sort many things out.
1.6 was terrible and dell made a mistake there
Hwowever i am now using stock 2.2 and its almost perfect.
They might take another 6 moths to release gingerbread for att streak but i am sure in another 2-3 months they will release GB for unlocked streak..
Finally to add about new processors.
The more u wait the better it gets. However as a end user i want my phone to be stable and fast. Yes its stable and fast with 2.2 on it. and if i have 2.3 its garunteed tat its going to be faster.
So guys get it if u like the size.....

Unfortunately, I'm not as optimistic.
I'm getting the the HTC Desire HD A9192 (the ATT 3G version). I'll decide which one to keep after a few weeks with it.

I have the US Streak with 1.6. I would be happy if Dell would get off their #$%^&
and get 2.2 out. It is taking them so long that I probably will never buy another Dell Product. I know I can fiddle/faddle with it and get 2.2 from this forum, but I would just rather get the official OTA from Dell/ATT
With a physical keyboard and 2.2 it would be a flippin netbook!

Yeah but unfortunately, if they haven't completed their testing they're just not going to do it.
If they had indeed completed testing they would have pushed it out to us UK owners.
I'm afraid you will have to bite the bullet and accept that it'll be launching with 1.6.
To be honest, as a newbie to android I'm not missing these 'extra' features to a great extent, the phone is wonderful as is, and i've no doubt I'll be ecstatic once it is released.
I am dreading the inevitable grunts screaming "I'll never buy the phone since it's 1.6 blah, blah, blah"
Im rolling with a N1 on 2.2 it will be a set back but soon as they drop 2.2, the streak might be the best android phone on the market.
Nothing like an N1 with a C-MOD But yeah 5" looks a little compelling... waiting to get my hands on one ...
Yeah I love my N1.
More Dell with a date on July 27

I gotta say, with the amount of time dell's taking to release this thing in the US, they better get android 2.2 on it asap.

I completely agree, I don't understand why those don't release this device 2.2 anyways. I would rather wait another month to make sure it does get 2.2 rather than taking their word for it.

I would sooner wait for 2.2 to be tweaked for the Streak rather than throwing it out with bugs and issues ,the GUI as I'm led believe its going to be custom not just a larger scale version of the standard GUI. So we have to wait for a few weeks for it to be released no problem its not like the phones featureless with 1.6.
Admittedly though if i was in the States i would be a little pissed with the lack of communication from Dell and knowing my cousins across the pond have had the Phone/Tablet(I'm still not decided) for almost two months but remember this isn't the norm as its normaly the other way around .
The Streak will of course get 2.2 in a few months, but the thing is...why bother with buying the device now, when in a few months either one of three things will happen:
1. The Streak gets updated to 2.2, still selling for $499 starting.
2. The Streak gets updated to 2.2, and additionally has to drop the price to keep their (now outdated) hardware relevant in the market.
3. A better phone (dual core? 1.5GHz? Android 2.3? 5"?) is released in the meantime, in which case, the Streak will be even less appealing.
I loved the Streak. I was all set to get one...in February. Then the EVO came out. And the Droid. And the Captivate. And the Streak STILL isn't out.
Dell mis-timed the market on this one, plain and simple. Had they released in the US in late Q1/early Q2, I think they'd have had the phone to beat...but they didn't. Now the ONLY thing they have up on everyone else is the form-factor (and possibly selling unlocked, which we still don't know yet). I just think that whatever they do at this point is going to be too little, too late, for too much. Sell it at $299 or something, unlocked, and then we'll talk, but short of that...I'm really not sure that I'll be sending my money Dell's way anymore.

I agree with all points you gave. We are in a strange times right now. My contract is up at TMO and dual cores are on the verge of coming out. I watched a video review of the streak and I never noticed but there is no dedicated "search" button to me is vital to android platform. More than likely I'll chill w/ my Nexus until Nov and see what happens. I really like the streak alot but they waited to long to release it

Yes, they would have done well to bring it to market earlier. But $299.- unlocked for this monster? How could that be possible? Even Fruitphone is about 800 unlocked. The only thing Dell ever had on everybody else is the fact that they have the ideal form factor -- maximum screen size that is still pocketable. And I don't see any other devices coming out in the near future. So not much has changed.

I hope this device is in ATT stores tomorrow for us to go see because they should learn from Google that the masses have to see the device before they purchase.
Its ok guys at least you are getting it
http://www.streaksmart.com/2010/07/...utm_campaign=Feed:+StreakSmart+(Streak+Smart)
that's a shame
It really is a shame. I hope they surprise us and lower the price. $125 for the hardware and another $100 when they ship it with FROYO. Captivate is strong competition. Marketing mistake.
They won't lower the price Dell know they will sell thousands as there is nothing much like this out there, give it 6 months or so and there will be a lot of other Tablets out there, then they might lower the price.

If it only has 2.1 on it in six months (IPad w/GSM will be there too) they will not be able to give it away.

It does everything the Streak does, just with not such a BIG backer.
Any thoughts.?
I think it will come out of the box with 1.6 but I really wouldn't be surprised to see a day 1 PTA update to 2.2.
terrible. why would they ship one of the best phones available with 1.6. they may have just lost my pre-order.
edit: also the non-standard charger is quite annoying
yup - i must confess - i hope someone at dell is reading this....ive got one, its new, ive had windows phones for the last few years, last one being a HD2 so this is a bit of a leap for me. So, its new so the change in os is keeping me interested, but, i can see why everyone is wanting at least 2.2, if dell dont provide at least that as an upgrade i might stick mine up for sale....other half has a droid on 2.1 and as i say i can hang out for the moment as its new hardware and new software (to me) but i wont be long before i need the latest and greatest...
They should at least post something saying where theyre currently at instead of going silent. then we at least know where we stand.
with all the reviews that are starting to come in I'm really thinking of waiting for the next batch of smart phones. I really would like the Streak but I smell a Nexus One type of marketing ....

Right On! It's one thing to keep the competition from discovering all the breakthrough features of your new product, quite another to be concealing (apparently) that it is a "legacy" device that is twice as expensive as need be. Who even knows if it is upgradeable at all?
Apparently from the horses mouth "some Dell bloke on twitter" it is "Gingerbread" ready....which does fit with the hardware requirements of said, gingerbread...

Internally yes the Streak is Gingerbread ready but with their custom UI they have made for the device that holds it back. If Ginger bread comes out in Dec like the rumors say then; with upgrading and testing it would be around June before Streak got Ginger bread. With all the rumored changes in Ginger bread whos to say that Dell says no. It seems the purpose of Ginger bread is to stop manufacturers to stop putting skins on top of Android.
There is a great article below about skinning problem.
http://www.droiddog.com/android-blog/2010/07/hey-manufacturers-leave-android-alone/
tbh I wouldn't sweat that it doesn't come with 2.2 out of the box.
1.6 has some minor issues, but they are minor.. and dell have tweaked some of the os to give 2.2 alike features.
we all know that if this phone becomes popular then the Devs will get their hands on the device and we won't have to worry about anything.
just wondering if i should get an unlocked streak and retire my N1? Anyone with a streak please chime in...the one thing really are there any good roms for the streak and is it easy to root and how is the recovery image...i will be giving up cayenogen, ra recover...anything close for the streak???
Steve's Froyo is pretty much the only ROM I know of. It's really fast though.
I came from a Desire, the only reason to bother with the Streak is if you really want the extra screen real estate. I found the Desire to be more snappy and an overall better performer. I also prefer sense although I can live without it.
Would I make the same decision again??? I've already had the opportunity to... and I did
thanks for the reply. i alsways wanted to get one from day one, but its pretty hard when no one that i know of has one that i can play with. i have tried the captivate, droid x and even the new mytouch 4G. i have returned them all for they really didnt blow my N1 out of the water...there was no wow factor...so im in a delema on do i get the streak or wait till a dual core android comes out...im thinking that there shouldnt be one released till next year...is it true that the new unlocked streaks have an upgreaded hardware? thanks again?

i almost pulled the trigger last night on the unlocked streak from dell's web site...but it says the delivery date will be 12-8-10 but it then gave me a delivery date of 12-21-10...now if i have to wait that long, i just might wait to see what everyone else has to say about it...and what new roms there will be...

Actually, I can vouch for this one too. Call quality for both ends of a call has been improved with the Streak.
One thing I noticed that was infinitely better on the Streak than the Desire... SPEAKERPHONE!!!
I could never hear anything on speakerphone while driving on my Desire, but the Streak is so loud that I actually have to turn it down little.
I've got one of the white Streaks from Best Buy coming in the mail (thanks Killster ) and I'm hoping it will be as simple to unlock as my other two Streaks were.
Captivate to Streak
Hey guys! I currently have a Samsung Captivate but am thinking of buying a new unlocked streak online which is rocking Froyo or heading over to my local best buy and picking up one of the white streaks they have in stock. So my question is this. I see that most everyone is using DJ Steve's Froyo rather than the Dell android 1.6. Does anyone know how the new Dell Froyo and Steve Froyo compare? I'm very impatient and Dell's website says the unlocked streaks will ship Dec. 11th. I've got money to burn and I don't know if I can make it three weeks for a shiny new phone/tablet android slice of perfection. I'm just happy that the streak's gps works. Captivate sucks!!! Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I have both a Nexus and a Streak. Honestly, I would hang onto your Nexus for a little while longer. I love my streak but I just keep coming back to the nexus with cyanogen. Plus, it would be tough to give up a Google experience phone. DJ Steve is awesome and hopefully will get cyanogen going on the streak but direct OTAs are hard to turn down.
My advice, do whatever it takes and have both. They're both awesome in their own ways.

thanks for your input, do you find yourself using the streak or N1 more on a daily basis?
I am really trying to make the streak my daily driver but as soon as I get home I am checking on the forums to see what new apps, tweaks, or roms there are for the nexus. Its hard to go from such a rich development community on the nexus to a 1 man show in DJ Steve (as good as he is).

Get the streak , you wont regret it. Its easily the best phone ive ever had. The size alone is the biggest selling point for me. I'll never go smaller than 5" again..
I just retired my N1 for good after getting my Streak up to official 2.2 + DJSteve/Fards tweak patch (via Smokku's instructions found here.
Having 5" for playing around with my favorite operating system is priceless. The hardware is fantastic quality. The only thing lacking is the camera, but lets be honest .. a $100 digicam is going to take 3x's as good of video and pictures if you really care about QUALITY.
Dell really put together a nice package with this mini-tablet / huge phone. I am a big guy .. 6'4" with hands that match my frame .. so this thing doesn't even feel THAT big in my hand. A week of having it with me, and I can't go back to the small screen, try as I might.
This thing screams just as loud as my N1 with the proper tweaks. It does really blow my mind how good the N1 was/is when you start trying to find phones out there standing tall above it.
Just as fast as any other 'droid phone .. but with a good .7" advantage on it's closest competitors (Droid X / Evo 4g).
Get this phone if you think you'll like the size. I am afraid nobody is going to make another 5" with the new dual-core stuff in the pipeline. The reason I am afraid is, I can't see myself going back to the smaller screens.
Any worried about the affording the Streak, Dell is including a $150 visa card for Black Friday sale. So u would actually be paying less than most of us.

THe white streak needs a special tool to upgrade from 1.6 to 2.2. I learned the hard way. Soft bricked twice lol. They are working on a tutorial for it now but if you can get into irc chat on channel #dellstreak they can help you out. I posted a thread about it in Modaco forum. DJ STEVES. 2.2 IS FAR superior to stock. I'm coming from a samsung captivate as well with all our problems it has it totally sucks. Streak just works.
I paid extra to buy the unlocked Streak with Froyo direct from Dell. Its a joke, it shipped with 1.6 and then a few minutes after starting up it popped up an "upgrade available" message. BUT it went smooth and only took about 20 minutes. So far this thing smokes a stock Captivate and the touchscreen is much better than the one on my old nexus. I do get the redirect error in the browser but not often.Unlocked streaks also don't need hacked to allow 3rd party app installation...you just click the box to allow it. This is the first device I've owned that I don't feel the need to hack the hell out of. It just works and I love it.

So, is it sounding/looking like Dell will deliver the 2.2 to the US ATT units on the 3rd? If I havent missed something very recent, they have postponed the O2 release to work out issues, meaning that, most likely, that will delay the ATT release even longer...
I bought on a Monday, returned on Wed, and repurchased on Friday thinking "official" Froyo was imminent, but find myself still waiting...$650 in, while my still Froyo-less Captivate with the jacked up GPS sits on my desk, and my wife "reminding" me every time she walks by that I didnt need a new phone...
I know I will be told to just update the Streak myself, but the stories I have read over the past couple weeks make me a little nervous, especially if there is an OTA right around the corner...
there is still plenty of unlocked phones that hasnt got the update yet, plus they did change the Dec 3 date to
eventually

http://erictric.com/2010/12/01/andr...reportedly-begins-rolling-out-to-dell-streak/
Looks like it is starting to trickle out. I'll let the brave souls here kick the tires
on it and see how it is. 1.6 is working perfectly for me, and I can't afford to be
chasing down bugs with 2.2
Anyone else that has a "virgin" streak from Dell, let me know how it goes.
The only "hack" that is on mine is the *#*#703#*#* or whatever it was...to
allow unsigned apps.

Haha...that's funny about the wife's comments. My wife said the same thing about my captivate. I ended up giving it to her and flashing a 2.2 rom for her to speed it up.
I say go ahead and pull the trigger. It's easy enough to flash the stock 2.2 rom if you follow the directions in the forum. The phones amazing too. Sooooo much faster than the captivate at stock.

Well, there you go...
My sim is back in my Captivate for now...I'll give it a few more days to see what happens before heading back to Best Buy with it.
Maybe if enough people voted with their wallets, Dell woul---yeah, I almost got that all the way out
I was just telling my wife about this thread, I also had the same issue I bought the streak about to sell my captivate, had it sitting here and she's like wtf?
Anyhow, hear this, she's getting the red unlocked froyo installed Streak for the holidays!! her request not mine. I'm so jealous already she'll get all the updates before me.
Pceaser
Man it sounds like u have a cool wife. Wish mine knew how to make good decisions & leave the icrap alone.

My guess is going to be a "no". Dell is really bad with keeping its promise esp when it comes to android. They got a new bee team of android. Even if they have your phone updated, it is still crap and nearly unuseable. They need to hire somebody like DJ_Steve. Until then, we are screwed.
Every other brand (HTC, Samsung, LG, etc...) pushing Android out there is the same. The only phone that got Froyo pretty much on time was the Nexus One.
Samsung promised 2.2 for the Galaxy S at the beginning of October, and their official Australian release which I only just got on mine a few days ago is really a laggy POS (same as 2.1)..
HTC has only just recently rolled out 2.2 for the Desire and other phones as well. Froyo on the Desire seems to be a very polished version so they've done their homework IMO.
LG.. well forget about LG, they're all stuck on 1.6 or 2.1 forever..
You guys have to remember that the Dell Streak is Dell's flagship device, and the first of its kind that they've released. Their team would be new, and I'm sure they're learning loads about the OS. Other such brand names have no excuse, especially Samsung, who has been playing with Android for ages.
So, the fact that Dell is where they are today with froyo (and to be honest, the 315 version on my Streak isnt that bad!) it can only get better from here people.

+1 Agreed
Looks like Dells done it again
Quote from www.streaksmart.com
I've heard some share-worthy news about the Android 2.2 update for the AT&T-locked Streak from an anonymous tipster who has a close friend who works at Dell.
The story goes that this friend recently received an email at work stating that the OTA update was going to be released on January 16th or 17th of next year (barring any further delays).

Well, if that holds out, I'll just jump on the bandwagon and see if I can brick mine with DJ Steve's.

Hi folks,
I have a month left on my contract and looking at the streak or the DHD and it would be great if you guys who have the streak can leave your thoughts on why you chose it and what you like about it. The 'issue' I have at the moment is the way of charging it, not by USB. Ok its a small issue but I tend to have a charger connection at work and home just in case so would need to purchase another one (more expense lol)
The other thing is development as there only seems to be the one custom rom for it (please tell me if I am wrong).
So, benefits, nice massive screen is always good (coming from a Hero) and from what I have read its quite nippy too (has it the newer snapdragon or the older one?)
It either this or the DHD
Do a search mate there are lots of threads on people asking the same question and as far as development only Steve is doing it right now and he does a dam good job, one of the problems with development is Dell have not released the Source code until they do Steve can only do so much but he has done a lot better than dell.

Yeh I did a search but nowt. So, Dell are not releasing the source code? I thought this was against Googles rules?
I like HTC because theyre pretty good with updates and support and what not. What I don't like about their products is that theyre all nearly identical. As soon as they release a "ground breaking" product, they release another one that slightly tops it a month later.
I like the streak because theres no hardware (the screen) out there like it. Pair that with front cam, snapdragon, nice battery, and you have specs that rival the top of the game. Although the 1.6 os (for AT&T) is a joke, and theres only streakdroid as a custom rom, I find the streak community very supportive.
Streak is the best! Its only gonna get better as development increases. Get one, you should be able to return it within a month if you don't like it. Once you get used to the size, you can't go back. I never use my netbook anymore...
How many times in a day do you streak owners hear "Wow! Is that your phone!? Can i see it?"

Lemme summerize what ppl have been sayiing and how I feel about the streak. Amazing phone, obivously biggest advantage is the big screen, and trust me when I tell u this, when you go soooo big u won't be able to go back to 3.7 inches.
The biggest problem with the phone, the camera. If you are a camera person, do not get this phone. this is not to say the camera is crap, but its pretty bad for 5mp.
People have been telling me that they drop their phone and it wasn't a high drop and the screen broke, I drop my phone really hard on the bare ground from 4 feet high and nothing happened (alittle scartch on the back, nothing on the screen) regardless of what happens I have also heard dell will replace it without a big hassel.
I used an iPhone before this phone, and I like this phone better. I have many requests to trade phones from random strangers on the street when they see me using the phone, iPhone 4 users too. So if for some reason you don't like the phone I am sure it wont be hard to trade it up.

Get one man. I went from the iPhone 3g,S,4, HD2, Desire, EVO, and now this. I'm loving this bad boy. It puts the web and everything else in motion man. This screen is the biz. Couldn't wait so using BestBuy/ att locked version until my Dell unlocked comes in. My 30 days will be up on Feb 6 but phone supposed to be here by the 3rd! If not, will be returning this armed then buying it again to start a new 30 days. So wrong, but am I gonna do? Use my wifes Craptivate or the 3.5 iPhone sitting in my drawer? Nope. Can't wait for some Froyo goodness. I digressed some.
Sent from my freakn Dell Streakn! 3.5 retina? Get outta heh!
Thanks for the replies folks, I am hearing good things from both sides (my other option is the DHD) so if my provider will offer a test run then I will give both of them a whirl and judge that way. I am loving the screen size though. Its ideal. Just worried about development for it. Seems only one guy on the case?
Yeah but he's amazing we already have better that stock version of 2.2 running no problems. When I had stock my quadrant score was 800s now its 1500s and no overclocking.
So even its only one guy he is doing better work than 20 guys.

Well yes that seems to be the case but how long into the future will development go for the Dell. I dont want to have a phone that is going to be redundant in 6 months time. Ok thats probably selfish on my point seeing as someone else is doing all the hardwork but we do get spolit you know lol
He already said he is skipping 2.3 if u were wondeing.about but he did also say he will working on 3.0 when it comes out.

Check out the Samsung Infuse 4G, for AT&T. It may be a viable alternative for you Haizum74.

Cheers dude, I'm in England though
As other have said on here the Streak IMHO is probably the best device out there.
DJ_Steve may be the only person cooking a ROM for this thing but if he quit tomorrow i know that the 1.6.1 ROM that i'm running will be better than anything Dell ever puts out for this phone.
That being said if i had to choose another device i would probably got for the HTC Infuse on AT&T, which is the Desire HD for you. Same device, just different name.
Although, i'm biased, go with a Streak. You won't be sorry!
+1 for crappy camm...other than that, I luv my streak...only wish I could get dlna to work..would luv to stream my video library while on the crapper

I love the Streak. It is insane how great it is and how much I love showing it off.
The only thing in the pipeline now that I would consider instead of the Streak would be the new Motorola ATRIX. A seriously high-end dual-core processor phone would be a step up, I think. But other than that, there isn't much out there to get excited about.
