Hi,
I think that I have a small but vexing problem with the browser. I tried to search about it, but it seems that I'm the frist to notice it. Pratically, when I use the browser in vertical mode, this issue there is not. But when it's in horizontal mode, whilst I click to link-bar for inserting an url, the url previously isn't pointed out by the system and so, to insert a new url, I must delete the previously url by the delete key. Someone have an idea? This issue is also in Dolphin Browser HD and so I think It's more a keyboard problem than a browser problem...
Thanks for your attention!
I've had this issue since upgrading to Froyo as well, but I couldn't find the "Froyo bugs" thread, so couldn't be bothered to post about it.
Anyway I don't think it's a keyboard issue as I've experienced this with both Samsung's stock keyboard and Better Keyboard, so I think it's a bug in Webkit or some other related library...
Edit: btw, you you can press and hold on the address bar and tap "Select all" and then start typing.

Yes, I know that, but it's quite annoying!

So this is something that kinda bothers me.
After Damage Control's V1 (2.1) this is pretty much the only thing I can think of to ***** about
If you're in the browser, at some random web page, and you press the search hard button... there is no damn space bar! The search button does bring up the search bar, but you have to goto the symbols just to press the space after each button. Its a real PITA.
Is this something that would be difficult to fix?

If I could find my damn USB cable I'll post a screenshot.
Are you pressing search while IN THE BROWSER? The search works fine in any other program. Just not in the browser.
I just nand'ed back to my 1.5 modaco rom and it is the same way... no space bar.

It's probably the HTC STOCK keyboard that's causing this, because in Darch's rom he has the stock android keyboard in it.

Yah that's because of the keyboard. Download the Android keyboard, and you should have a spacebar.

I can confirm this happens in a vanilla install of DamageControl V1.0 -espresso- I can also confirm that this did not happen with my stock 1.5 build.
Do you folks think this is a 2.1 bug from HTC that is affecting ALL 2.1 roms sporting sense and the HTC keyboard then?
Is it something that can be easily fixed in the code?

Indeed!
The first "search" brings up the URL search and URL keyboard. It is designed for searching URLs and space is not a valid character in URL. Note that the
text in the search box says "Search or type URL".
Pressing "search" again, calls up a normal text search, and thus you get the keyboard with a space, and the text in the search box says "Quick Search Box".
Therefore, it's not a bug or an omission - it is by design.

Dave

Thats exactly what i was gonna say! The first search option for websites doesnt include the spacebar cuz there is never a space is a url... therefore this is a misunderstanding of how the software functions. A different keyboard will not change how the browser's search function works. It will still by default show url searches first. Changing browsers may help...

BRILLIANT!
That is actually quite well designed now that I am aware!
This phone and forum never cease to amaze me.
I'm a little late to this conversation, looks like you guys got it figured out.
Anyone have this issue? I literally cant even type this post without having to go back and correct everything...Cursor jumps back mid sentence a lot and inputs words accidently etc...does overclocking fix this issue? Can I overclock if already on 3.1?
Thanks!
i have a terrible time typing on webforms.
do you have the dock ? if so turn off the trackpad using the 4th button from the top left
this works a treat making the cursor stay where it damn should, you have to go back to jabbing the screen but it means pain free inputing when you need to.

Not for me. Nothing has helped. It's not just here, it typing an any webform anywhere on the web. It might be slightly better in some places but it never goes away. I went to the mall and tested 3 other brand tablets yesterday and none had this problem.
Touch the screen, wait for mouse to dissapear to start typing.
I use SwiftKey keyboard and I can barely see any lag, and the predictions are the best.

I am having the exact same issue. I have tried the stock browser and Firefox. I'm running android 4.0 ICS (it came with that upgrade). I mainly use it without the dock attached, so that can't be an issue.
Overall it is very laggy for typing and starting to type into text fields. I have to click then wait several seconds before typing and randomly while typing, it will get "backed up" and characters will stop appearing for a moment.
Generally I can type okay without the cursor jumping around...that is, unless I make a mistake and want to go back and fix it. Then trying to point the cursor at the right letter is nearly impossible because it jumps all over while dragging (and just doing one single tap makes the cursor go in unpredictable spots). Even if I get it to the right spot I can only type one letter then the next letters will start type at the bottom / end of the text field.
I realize this thread is old, did anybody get to the bottom of this?
I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue but I can't seem to highlight and copy an address in my URL. I'm using dolphin browser and have tried several different keyboards. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Dolphin is a PITA for copying URLs.
Add bookmark for the page you want to copy the URL for, but before clicking "OK", long press in the address then click copy out of the box there, then click cancel so you don't have the bookmark.
The only way I know to copy URL in Dolphin
you can highlight the url to copy.. It takes double tapping on the url just exactly right to fast it will reload to slow .. ahh i forget what it does.. Its frustrating beyound reasonable.. the book mark thing works as well...this issue also exist in stock browser... GRRRRR Makes me wanna chuck my tablet across the room at times...
we need a right click menu box are you listening google...

It's been a known issue with Dolphin since day one that they haven't deemed necessary to fix!
I have an Acer Iconia A500 and I use Dolphin Browser HD with the stock keyboard.
To copy a URL, I navigate to the page, press and hold in the address bar, and then select "Copy page url" from the resulting choices. It doesn't visibly highlight the URL, but it's there when I go to paste.

Glad to know that my first forum post actually helped someone. I'm using the latest version (7.3.0) of Dolphin Browser HD. I'm not sure when the "copy URL" feature was added, as I've had my Acer Iconia A500 and A100 for less than a month.
I'm new to Android, and I have a question that is probably very basic.... My touch is often imprecise, even when the page is zoomed, and when I'm trying to type something I often find that I need to move forward just a character or a word or two. Is there some way to do this with the on-screen keyboard? Sometimes it drives me nuts trying to find the spot I want to get to with my finger!

Not with the stock keyboard. Try Hackers Keyboard in the market, it adds arrow keys.

I have never had that issue on my a500, even when I was running pure unrooted stock. Just press and hold on the URL in the address bar. Little bar above comes up with cut, copy, and paste. Easy easy.
*redownloads dolphin HD*
*instantly remembers why I removed it*
Ah well. Yeah, as I thought, look at the address bar, press and hold on the URL, there's your menu, with copy URL on it.
Simple.
I don't get what issues you guys are having, sorry.

It was not always so in Dolphin HD. As a matter of fact if you do a deep search in this forum (at least a few months back), Dolphin lacked that feature

The little blue tab that appears when you click in a text area is supposed to help with that (supposedly just drag it where you want your cursor), but it's FAR from perfect

I just tried that, and it does help a lot! I was able to slide the green arrow tab where I needed it to go. Thank you so much!
Does anyone know where there are similar Android on-screen keyboard tips? I'd like to review the basics—like how to highlight, copy, paste, etc. I tried Google, but I couldn't find what I was looking for.
heres your guide:
To highlight something long press on the word. In dolphin a menu will pop up. Hit select text. The word will be selected and there will be a bar on the top of your page with copy, ect. In the stock hc browser, the popup menu step is simply skipped.

Thank you! I've been able to copy things randomly, but I was never quite sure how I had done it!
I just tried what you suggested, and now I see that I can move the green arrow tab(s) to highlight and copy multiple words too. Yay!
I am using the stock ICS release that was pushed to my wifi Xoom. While I love it over HC I am noticing some inconsistenies in the way the keyboard behaves across applications. For example
e-mail
This is the best, as you type the characters appear both in the email and in blue just above the keyboard suggestions for the word appear from which you can select the correct one. If you ignore suggestions and the word still isn't known it's underlined in red and if you press the word, you get a pop up list of words that it thinks it could be. You can add to the dictionary or delete the word.
Google+
No suggestions in blue above the keyboard but if you enter a word it doesn't know it's highlighted in red and once again pressing the word offers a pop up list of words with the option to choose, add to the dictionary or delete
Google Voice
Same behaviour as with email - this is good
Browser in a Javascript enabled edit form
This is very variable and was terrible in HC with lag etc.
Works fine in the XDA forum now - same behaviour as in email which is great.
But on this forum www.googletvforum.com - very laggy typing, no spell check and no popup. This BBS uses vBulletin so it might be with all vBulletin sites.
Just wondering what others have been experiencing.
Yes. And it really sucks.
The g+ app is where I notice it the most.
Pretty sure it works everywhere else for me tho.
Running EOS stingray47 with gapps 10.5.
However this was also a problem on HC. So I tend to blame the app more so than the OS.
-John
(Would have posted in vanilla's thread, but I don't have permission to do so)
I have played with two CM7 ROMs.. the one that's been floating around for a while, and now vanillaLVL's.
In both, you can see the on-screen keyboard just below the list of suggested words.
To recreate
- Open Messaging and create a new SMS message
- Tap in the message box
- You'll see the OSK just below the suggestions. More precisely, you can see the bottom row of buttons.. like the ?123 and the Tab arrow
This isn't a big deal, just a little annoying. Is there a fix out there for this?
YES! Exactly! Somebody help with this problem. Personally, I'm annoyed when the keyboard comes out from the bottom of the screen.
Sorry for my english.

I have installed Swiftkey Flow and that bug isn-t there anymore, however, the problem now is that, whenever i want to use the physical keyboard, Swiftkey also appears taking more than half of the screen size :\
Would like to know if there-s a fix for this so Android keyboard doesn't appear when in portrait mode.
