defitely not the router, because when i put in my Vodafone germany Sim it works effortlessly. But i prefer using the prepaid card abroad because it is cheaper.
So correct me if I'm wrong,
DHD + Vodafone Pre-Paid SIM = No internet via wireless router.
DHD + Vodafone Germany SIM = Internet via wireless router.
Have you tried disabling mobile data and just using WiFi?

Yes to all. I`ve done everythong i can and it`s getting frustrating
I don't understand how changing a SIM card can affect WiFi.
What channel is your WiFi router on? Perhaps the Pre-Pay SIM alters the WiFI regulatory domain on your DHD, removing some channels.
Is the Pre-Pay SIM also from Germany?

i just tried a factory reset using the pre paid Sim, after inputing the wireless router info, i tried setting my HTC sense account and it keeps getting the error "unable to get the region from the server"
this is where the issue starts from, so i have to skip setting the account to complete setting up the HDH after the factory reset.

the channel for both is 1
Have you tried to enable data roaming? Seems your DHD is blocking all data Mobile & Wifi when using the Irish SIM. Possibly thinks your roaming in Germany.

I just today recieved my XDA 2 which was bought unlocked ready to use with my Orange PAYG SIM card. I Followed the instructions
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=7306&highlight=orange+gprs
to allow internet access through orange but have nah problems. When attatched to the cradle with ActiveSync, the internet works fine. but when i try to connect to Orange GPRS it says "Connecting to GPRS for quite a while before saying...
Cannot Connect
Dialed : orangeinternet
No modem at above number. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings.
Dismiss
I went into the orange shop and they said they do not have internet settings for the phone as they do not produce it themselves.
I do not know what i have done wrong or how to change my settings so that i can connect to the internet out of my usb cradle.
Thanks for any help given...

...?
anybody?
Have you checked with Orange that they have activated gprs on your sim? O2 do not allow internet connection over gprs with a payg sim card, all that is allowed is wap over gprs although it is possible to access the web over gsm.
Thank you ever so much i had Orange enable GPRS and now i can use the internet on my Pay as You Go simcard wherever i want! Thanks! Anyone have any idea of how much GPRS costs on Orange?
Hello people
I've just come into possession of an 02 branded HTC Universal, which has been unlocked.
Everything works fine except for 3G data/internet. The phone can find a 3G (UMTS) network, but it can't use it for any kind of data.
I have a web'n'walk (3G) tariff, and I've tested my SIM card in a T-mobile phone and 3G works fine. So tariff and SIM are fine.
The problem must be with the phone. T mobile say it's not their handset so they can't help - so I'm depending on you lot!
Are there some settings I need to change to make this work on Tmobile's network? There's GPRS settings, modem connection settings etc. Any of those could be the culprit. I've tried settnig up a modem connection with general.t-mobile.uk, without putting in any username, password or domain, and that doesn't work.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Sharif
yeah u need to input the settings
goto connections and add new modem connection and type in 'T-mobile Internet'
then click next and in the access point type in 'general.t-mobile.uk'
then the next page your on to the username password settings where use the following
username: t-mobile
password: one2one
Do you know the 3 uk settings?
I have the same problem but i'm now on the 3 network.
http://www.europe.htc.com/support/software/htcp3600.html
use the program at the bottom of the page "network settings wizard" sure its not for the universal but it works. I used it to setup my three settings.
I am using a Wizard with WM6 and internet sharing wizard to connect to the internet. It works alright. Sometimes though, it will take forever to access the any sort of internet resources. I'm wondering what the cause of this is. Is it just GPRS lag? I also have a Mobile Broadband card in my laptop, rather then just activate my cingular card I'd rather just pop my T-Mobile SIM in there and get the service. I know that I don't need to unlock this card because when I stick it in the slot and restart my computer, the utility I use to connect the card to the internet picks it up as if it was a T-Mo SIM and the T-Mo GPRS/EDGE networks. Although when I connect to it, it says I'm connected, but I can't access any web pages. The utility also says I'm sending data but not receiving any. Any ideas? The card is a Dell Wireless 5520 Cingular Mobile Broadband Card. Any ideas would be much appreciated!
try changing your server settings?
Maybe try changing the server from internet2.voicestream.com to internet3.voicestream.com or vice-versa.
Also, you may need to have the t-mobile internet plan for you to get full web page access. This is currently $30 per month I think. Maybe you already have this?
Good luck
methinks the problem lies in that you have a tmo sim but a cingular mobile broadband card.
Tired more things.
As far as trying APN's I have tried internet2.voicestream.com; internet3.voicestream.com; wap.voicestream.com
We have a full data plan that allows full access to the internet which is used to access our exchange server for emails and contacts. I have used the internet sharing wizard to play world of warcraft from my phone. I'm hoping that means that I have a full access plan. internet3.voicestream.com doesn't work on my phone for a network plan but the others do. I have also tired to use my T-Mo SIM in my wireless broadband card as a modem connection, I've found that if I connect using the call numbers that people are using for their phones modem tethering and no login credentials like you're supposed to do to initiate modem tethering. I don't get any response from the remote computer. But then I start to use some of the modem strings I get as far a Registering on the Network before my modem connection terminates! Thats the last step! do you think I could dial it as a modem connection if I had the correct int string?

I read somewhere that somewhere someone was able to do this but they didn't really go all in depth about it. They said to leave the login credentials empty and use the t-mobile apn. Just like you do when configuring the networks on your T-Mo phone. I also and another question. Is there a difference between using wap.voicestream.com vs. internet(2 or 3).voicestream.com? I read somewhere that there is a proxy on wap.voicestream.com, but when I looked for the forum I read that on I wasn't able to find it.
t-mobile internet (2or3).voicestream.com
I recently got the hotspots service (added for free) and in that process they told me that I had to change my apn to internet2.voicestream.com. It was internet3.voicestream.com.
Incidentally, you can add the hotspots at not extra charge if your already on the $29.99 internet plan. you just have to ask them to switch you to the mobile internet with the hotspots.
Hello all,
I am on the verge of buying an xda mini s, and i have two questions.
Firstly, is it easy to unlock and if unlocked will it work on the '3' network.
Secondly, if i use the wifi facility will be network charge me to browse the internet in the same way they would if i connect via gprs/wap etc.
Thanks
Sportyfr
WiFi conection won't generate any charge from your phone provider. With WiFi you conect to a Wireless router. This can be open (anyone can conect) and free, open but not free (Ej. Fon), or closed (with WEP, WPA, MAC filter, etc). Or you may not be able to conect at all because there are no available networks around.
Just be careful. If you activate WiFi but can't conect to any network, using internet will make the phone activate the GPRS, included the asociated phone bill.

Hi Sportyfr
The XDA Mini-S from O2 will be unlocked anyway.
Be aware that the XDA Mini S is "not" a 3G phone, if it does register, it may not work for long on the "3" network.
AIUI
When 3 spot it, your sim card could / will get barred pretty quick.
The 3G replacement for the XDA Mini-S was the O2 Trion aka the HTC Hermes.
BTW
T-Mobile do have WiFi included in some of their higher priced "Web and Walk" packages.
Hope it helps you or at least saves you some money.
Alan
Hi,
I wonder if there is a way to run a prepaid mobile broadband sim from the PDA instead of using the dongle connected to a laptop or desktop?
In other words is there a connection manager for PDA phone by any chance?
This will certainly increase the usability of the sim, one can get connected from anywhere - no laptop/desktop needed!
Cheers,
Fulham
If you want to use the phone as a modem, then yes this is possible. You can use Internet Sharing on the phone to connect the laptop via USB or Bluetooth, or better still install WifiRouter to connect the lappy via wifi and connect to the Internet via 3G.
I do this when I travel OS on hols.

I think you are referring to using the phone as a modem and then connect the laptop for web surfing via it. But this is not what I want to do.
I want to put the sim (by taking out one in the usb dongle (prepaid mobile broadband) supplied by the carrier) in my touch hd sim card slot and get connected, then surf internet FROM WITHIN THE DEVICE (touch HD) ITSELF.
Thx

OK...I see now. I suspect you can, although you may need to configure the phone with appropriate connection settings for your carrier. If you are lucky the SIM *may* do this for you.
Having said all that, don't be too suprised if it doesn't work. Also, the handset will need to be unlocked before you put the prepaid SIM in it.

Any idea as to how to do it step by step? How to insert the APN (access point name) of the provider?
Can someone help please?
The phone is already unlocked.
cheers

I have an O2 prepay mobile dongle and my Phone was on O2 contract (so it had some O2 APN settings already).
Although the phone reports a 3G signal, browsing doesn't seem to work when using the dongles SIM.
Question from #6 above continues.
