I know there are similar posts about the general issue but not this particular problem so dont waste my time with search suggestions or flaming me!!! My first EVO had light leakage and after the recent update any activation of the GPS caused the phone to randomly restart (the only non stock thing about the phone was I used UnrEVOked one click "root"). I finally asked for a replacement, got it yesterday and received the OTA today. I hard reset the refurb right out of the box just to make sure. I only had basic programs on this replacement (goggles, google voice, myspace, aim, fourquare, pandora, facebook, twitter, and thats about it) and did not restore anything but my old SMS messages. I just started up foursquare and guess what? THE RANDOM REBOOT! Any advice? I doubt it is fourquare or any of the other basic programs so I'm lost!!
When my phone was randomly rebooting due to gps issues, I solved it by doing a factory reset. I too thought at the time that it was related to an app that was currently installed but I reinstalled all my apps afterwards and the problem hasn't occurred again since performing the reset.

well i did a hard reset on the first and then even did it by the clear storage setting... then got a completely new evo with the same problem after the OTA update
I had to do a factory reset for mine too. The phone was resetting anytime an app was accessing GPS.
The interesting thing was that when I pulled the micro SD card out of the back, the problem was solved. Of course, once I put it back in, it returned. I have no idea what the significance of that is but nevertheless did a factory reset yesterday and so far no more problems with all the same apps reinstalled.
Thanks I removed it, now no GPS issue??? So what could the problem be the card itself or something that reads the card?
I have had random reset issues with my own Evo, and have hard-reset the device twice already to try and solve the issue. The problem returns after a matter of days. I came to the forums hoping to solve the issue, but so far I have only confirmed what others have seen.
Firstly, I run stock with no root.
Accessing Maps, Camera, ShopSavvy, Goggles, all reset the phone immediately. Also accessing apps that have no GPS access (e.g. NYCMate, Newsrob, Flixster) were causing a reset.
Most importantly, once my phone reset the first time, it would not cease until I removed the battery, or until it drained itself of a charge.
Finding this thread may have solved my issues and saved me a trip to the Sprint store for a reconditioned device.
I have been able to replicate the "solution" of removing the MicroSD card. I have also been able to use a second (newly formatted 2GB) card in its stead with no restarts. My thoughts now are to wipe the original card and replace it and see what happens. If this solves my/our problems, that would be fan-flippin-tastic.
Of course, if the problem persists, it is either an issue with the specific card itself (Samsung 8GB) or with the reader on the phone.
My phone reboots a few minutes into a call when GPS is active in Google nav.
Frustrating to say the least.
So, after hard resetting my phone did the same thing after a few days. Then I found this solution and haven't had any issues since. Granted it's only been a few days, but this definitely worked.
1. Call Sprint and have them give you the MSL CODE for your phone.
2. Dial ##GPSCLRX#
3. Enter the MSL code that you recieved from Sprint.
4. Your phone will reboot.
5. After your phone starts up again it should not reboot because of a GPS crash (test it out).
I will warn you that some have reported having an endless boot loop as a result and had to do a hard reset from recovery. So backup your data first if you need to. I did mine without the bootloop.
I also read that ShopSavvy may be the culprit. I removed it from my phone before doing this as well. You may want to try that first. I'll report with an update after a couple weeks if still ok or if the problem returns. Even if it does return, this is a relatively simple fix until Sprint gets something official out (yeah, right).
this did not fix my phone it is still rebooting
what radio are you guys using? have you updated it recently? or still on the old 7.28? just curious cuz this happened to a friends EVO i am in charge of & sprint store appeared to have updated it as their "fix"

I'm running: 2.05.00.06.10
For me, I didn't change anything that I remember outside of installing apps(no radio, etc updates) and it just randomly developed the reboot issue. Doesn't seem related to GPS to me.
I got into a reboot loop while emailing pictures today(had to pull the SD card to stop).
I got a reboot today(but not a loop) when surfing the app store
I get most reboots while surfing the web using dolphin
SD card is the culprit?
I am experiencing all these same symptoms, except for the fact that at this point, I have restored the phone to 'factory' settings, as well as formatted the SD Cards mutliple times (on the phone). I have no apps on the phone, except for those that come with the factory reset image.
I simply have the 4G and GPS turned on, and my google account synced. When I try to surf the web for more than 20 minutes or so using the default web browser, the phone starts to reboot.
I'm at my wit's end and now I'm off to Fry's to buy a new SD Card. seems like that worked for at least one person above.... any other fixes, much appreciated...
Took an evo with this issue to sprint and they replaced the phone. After doing all the things that you did to solve the problem, decided it was hardware related. Have not had the issue with the replacement phone yet(1 month).

My brother's Evo was doint this and I tried the factory reset on it twice. It's off with Best Buy right now, hoping he'll have it back before Christmas. Wish I'd seen this thread first but oh well. I'll try ideas here if it still does it when we get it back.
replacing the phone was the only thing that worked for me but i now have light leakage and a loose screen as well as small dings on my phone. making the switch to tmobile soon. form what i hear they give out new phones not refurbished ones.

Try re-formatting the card with the Evo itself (not a PC)
Good info in this thead.
Mine seems to be working better. Too short of time to call it fixed.
what I did....
1.pulled the SD card and loaded all contents to my laptop.
2.formatted the SD card in my phone
3. Reset GPS using the ##gpsclrx# - I had to do this 3 times. Using GPS Test, I noticed that the GPS was working then locking up (not causing a reboot). After the 3rd time of resetting, it was working properly.
Before I tried this...my phone was rebooting randomly...but...sometimes every 30 secs or so. It's been up for about an hour now with all radios turned on.
Hi guys,
I tried to do a search but didn't find anything that worked...
I've been recently losing my 3g/1x data connection a lot for long periods of time (30 min or more). It's annoying since I can't check my e-mail, or listen to Pandora, basically all the things I got this phone for since I'm limited to what I can do on my computer at work.
Anyway, is there a bizarro fix for this? I've tried rebooting the phone, airplane mode on/off, and updating my profile. I remember with my old medium intelligence phone I could tell it to check my e-mail or something and trick it into waking up the data but no such luck as the phone complacently accepts there's a connection error.
Thanks in advance!
You may want to try letting folks know if you are running stock or a custom rom, which one it is and what modem version. Whenever I run into strange issues with my phone that isn't attributed to the rom I'm running, I just ODiN back and reflash through the process and that usually takes care of most problems. G'luck.
I have noticed mine does that too occasionally. Turning 4g on and then back off usually makes 3g start working again for me.
In my case my phone sometimes has trouble finding 3g after using wifi for a while, toggling 4g almost always makes 3g work again.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Oh right! I'm just on the stock rom.
Toggling 4g and wifi doesn't work for me. Thanks for the suggestion though.
It happens more at work so it probably has something to do with that. I generally always end up roaming but I haven't had trouble in the past with using roaming data. It still says unlimited on the Sprint account website and will come back every once and a while. (I know because it'll notify me of new mail or something random.)
are you in an area of low reception? that could cause it but not sure if there is a work around for it...
this same thing happens to my wife's epic.but not regularly..
I updated the prl and seems to stopped doing it,,
I was having the same issue coming out of Airplane mode. The 3G was coming back sporadically and then not at all. I called Sprint support and they had me do a phone Restore through the service menu ##3282# (you need your MSL) and it reset the phone like it was going through the activation process. It wasn't a factory reset so I didn't have to reinstall any apps. It did work the first time but after that it started happening again.
I finally went into the Sprint store and they did a hard reset, which is the same as a factory reset (I think) Settings>Privacy>Factory Data Reset. That was a couple of days ago and I haven't had the problem since.
Unfortunately, this requires completely wiping out your installed apps. I was on the stock rom and unrooted so I hadn't backed up with Titanium Backup (needs root). But I did use AppBak to backup my list of apps so that it was easier to restore them from the Market. If anyone knows a way to backup and restore similar to Titanium, that doesn't require root, let me know.
I was having the same problem with mine and nothing worked so they gave me another one. If it's that bad call sprint tech or take it they will probably give you another one

I use "Sprite Mechanic" for backing up my APK's to SD card. It only recognizes market and 3rd party installed apps. Can be found in the market for free.

I have an HTC Hero that keeps entering "Emergency Callback Mode" for what seems to be no reason at all. It mostly happens as soon as I answer an incoming call but also randomly in between.
This mode kills all data conenctions and prevents outgoing calls for 5:00. But, even if I say cancel, or wait the 5 minutes, it still stays on and I have to reset the device. It usually resolves itself after 45 mins or so. It happens once or twice a day.
I have researched the issue on google and I have found very little information about this problem. On some phones, this mode is enabled immediately after calling 911 to allow rescuers to call you back and locate you via GPS. I have never called 911 on this device.
I am currently running Cyanogen 7.1 RC2 ROM but I had the same issue on many different ROMS I tried so its not related to that.
on baseband 2.42.01.04.27. Maybe I should try downgrading it? How can I do that safely?
I really don't want to try reverting back to a stock ROM...
EDIT:
I think I posted this in the wrong forum, mod please move, sorry.
Hmmmm........so a complete doesn't solve the issue? And when you say ''sense'', does that mean with sense, it doesn't happen, but with the other Roms it does?
Try updating your radio to the latest .29
Yea its Me Again With the
Modified Hero
I just upgraded to the lastest baseband and it's still doing it.
I also figured out I can trigger the problem immediately by going to mobile network settings and changing my roaming preferences.
I should probably not that I recently repaired this phone and used QPST service programming tool to copy settings over from a touch pro 2 to the Hero. Could there maybe have been a wrong setting from the TP2 that is affecting the CDMA on this phone??
Just did a PRL update. No luck...
Did a succesful over-the-air profile and PRL update. Same problem...

I am considering using a stock RUU to completely wipe the phone to factory settings, but am trying to exhaust all my other options first so I won't have to re-root it and set everything up again... I'm almost at that point though.

!!!!!!!!!!!
FIXED IT SUCKAS.
Did a ##786# which reset all the CDMA settings, then re-did my NAM and data profile settings and it works. Go figure. Doing the ##786# on this phone also retained nearly everything including meid, baseband, recovery, and ROM. All it did was fix the problem. Awesome.
I still have no idea what was causing this to begin with, it was driving me crazy. Hopefully this thread will be helpful to someone else who has the issue.
On a side note, how dumb is this emergency mode?? So you call 911, then you can't call anyone else after that?? What if you need to call your wife and kids to say you love them one more time?! Haha.
Awesome!!!!!! Glad it's fixed. Now I'll just star this just in case it happens to me.
So my girlfriend's Nexus S has been losing the entire voice and data network and going into no service mode, no biggie at first, just cycle airplane mode, then it went on to rebooting because you would select airplane mode from the power off menu but it would not check the box in the wireless settings menu.
After the reboot the box would show checked and airplane mode could be disabled and the service would resume. The the phone started getting stuck in airplane mode and not even rebooting it would bring it out the first few times, then it got to the point of resetting the phone, a wipe cache/data reset didn't fixed it. So off to T-Mobile for a new sim card. Rebooted the network immediately. And as of last night its back in full force and now not even a new sim will resurrect the network.
Have tried wiping, reflashing stock 2.3.3, new sim again, multiple resets, had to get an toggle widget to get it out of airplane mode and still a dead network, all this time the network in the *#*#4636#*#* menu showing unknown and is not able to be changed and reverts back to unknown immediately, OEM specifics settings button is greyed out and you are not able to disable the radio either.
While I'm going to call Samsung on Monday and I guess send the phone off, I worry about mine because it too does it but only once a month or so, but I do constantly have issues resurrecting the phone from airplane mode at times because the box will not be checked in the wireless settings menu but I can see the airplane instead of network bars, problem persists with reboots sometimes.
I also would like to add that even when the box is not checked in the wireless settings menu for airplane mode, if you click it it just hangs forever and will try to select but never will and stays grey like its turning everything off, but if the scren goes off its like you never tried.
Has anyone else seen this? I have seen a lot of people with data network issues or having to reboot to get voice network back but nothing as bad as I'm experiencing.
Both our phones are and have been completely stock and unmodified.
Thankfully we still have her Vibrant and in case I need to send mine in my Nexus One.

Have you tried restoring from another persons' pre-made nandroid backup?
This over-writes the radio firmware, you should give it a go!
I also found that I had problems on 2.3.3, however reverting to 2.3.2 gave me no problems!
Just contact me if you need any help restoring from a nandroid backup or finding the 2.3.2 backup files

Is that true? I am just on the verge of calling samsung. My phone won't connect to or display any available networks, and is pretty much now dumbed down to a small tablet. I've tried everything except another persons nandroid backup. I've been told to stay away from flashing another persons... but I'm really desperate.
If you could provide me with a backup, that would be awesome.
I'm having identical problem.
It was working fine yesterday, look back to it and now it's got no mobile network, nothing. Just the no bars and cross symbol. I've tried wiping dalvik cache, reflashing the radio, wiping data/factory reset, reflashing the rom, restoring with a backup (Backup of when I first rooted the phone) and still no signal. Nothing has worked..
Anyone got ideas on how to fix this issue?

Can you search for and view available networks?
This sounds like the CM7 powerwidget problem (3g/2g) I used it and I loss all network, phone process will crash every second, however if your phones are stock I can't think in anything causing it.
For CM7 you'll have to reflash and delete userdata or edit the sql database for the providers and change a value to 0, but you need root.
When I went to *#*4636.... my preferred service was "unknown" too, but now it is OK.
Try to dail:
*#*#4636#*#*
and find your network information.

Nope. Sits their 'searching' but nothing shows up.
In, *#*#4636#*#*, it gives little to no information. Just says nothing for current network and for GSM disconnects it has,
Sate: DvInactiveState
disconnected with last try
at 9:59AM
fail because No Error
And that time never changes, stays at 9:59AM.
As my above post suggested, I've tried doing a factory reset and reflashing. I don't think I use CM.. I flashed with Oxygen 2.1.6 (using it's kernel) but I restored to Oxygen rom and trinity kernel after it didn't work.

Ok, it'd be great if you worked something out. I'm so glad i'm not the only person with this issue!
Anyone had any breakthroughs? *hopeful*
I wouldn't call it a breakthrough but I got somewhere!
Ended up putting a extremely thin piece of wire into the external antenna port at the back of the phone. Wasn't too keen on doing this, but my phone now has reception isn't stuck at the dreaded -113dbm.
The reception isn't good, but it's enough to send texts and have calls.
Although the area needs quite good reception for me to receive anything, and it's extremely sensitive. To get 3 bars in a place where I usually get full bars, I have to be outside. While inside it's reduced to none or 1 bar, which is enough to send/receive texts and a sort of lagging phone call (did a few tests). As mentioned before extremely sensitive. The phone seems to like it better when it's up-right. In the middle of the CBD at Brisbane I get full reception and 3G, which is fine but in the places where you usually get 2 bars, you get no signal at all, unless you're outside.
So this is hardly a fix. I will most likely be sending it to Samsung to get it actually fixed. Either that or get it fixed the same day and pay probably close to $100 so I don't have to wait 2 months waiting for Samsung to twiddle their thumbs.
Thats awesome! But I'm going to post mine off to Samsung USA tomorrow, which will take forever considering international shipping. Where could you get it fixed same-day? I'm going to try this wire thing
So it can't be a software issue, but maybe the rom overloaded the antenna and fried it or something? I'm glad we've got that far.

Its more serious than that my friend! Thanks anyway
I got a quote from a place in Brissy called "FixMyMobile" and they said if they can fix it, it will cost $99. Although I'll get quotes from different places (if I find them) and see what they charge however I don't think I will be able to get cheaper, most likely around the same price..
So I may do that to not wait the ridiculous time it will take to get it back from Samsung.. Not sure on places in NZ though.
Yeah it seems like a hardware issue definitely. I eventually reverted the phone back to stock everything and it still happened, so that there shouts hardware issue.
Hi guys, i know this is a common problem, but i have yet to find a solution to it. My S4 (Bell Canada, KOT49H.I337MVLUFNI2, completely stock unrooted) will drop the mobile network (both voice & data), and the only way to get reconnected to Bell is by rebooting my device. After a reboot I might be good for a few hours or for a few days but it always happens again. At first the mobile signal will grey out, then eventually turn to a circle with a line through it. In the network mode setting becomes blank and non-selectable.
Suggestions around the web include selecting WCDMA only, clearing the cache, factory resets, and reflash the full firmware package with Kies3 & Odin. Ive tried them all and the problem always inevitably returns.
Here are a few links to people with similar problems, but nobody seems to have a solution in any of these threads either:

Are you sure your problem isn't the same as the sim card removed problems? Because the symptoms sound the same in the effect they have, and what is required to temporarily fix it.
See here and here.
I've experienced the same problem, but it seems to have cleared itself.
It first started happening after the update to the latest Bell stock firmware.
I had read some people blaming it the Amazon app store as well as the Skype app. I had both installed, but have since removed Skype but can't say 100% that this is what solved the issue for me.

My SIM card is still in place and detected, the phone just disconnects from the network. After a reboot it will be fine sometimes for a few hours - sometimes a few days, but it always inevitably disconnects.
If you check any of the several links I posted you'll see there are hundreds (if not thousands) of people on all different carriers all experiencing the same problem.

I've had my device since Jan of 2014 and the problem only appeared in the last few months following the 4.4.2 update.
I'm having the same problem. It disconnects and reconnects again. Stays disconnected for about 2 mins. Happens like 12 times a day. I re enter the apn setting and still does it..it happens with every rom I flash. I've notices that it mostly happens when it switches from 4g lte to 4g. I'm on At&t 4.4.4
bump. anyone ever find a solution to this?
