I have read the point of view of other Fascinate users, but now I want to get opinions from this side.
I like my Fascinate. Physically, I think it is much more appealing than the X. The screen is beautiful, I can live without the notification light.
I have a 32 gig SD Card that I will be transferring with me so that is not a factor.
What I don't like is that I have to root and tweak (which I have) to fix the GPS issue (and its much better but still not always fast). I have to go out of my way to de-Bing it which is annoying. It seems that there is a slight lag with it. Only occasionally though.
Why should I go to the Droid X? I really am happy with the 4" Fascinate screen (after having the Droid 1 for a year). Now I want to go bigger to the 4.3"! Part of this is just an experiment because I still have an upgrade and wouldn't stick with the Fasc or the X very long. I kind of just want to see the negative/positives of TouchWiz to Motoblur (and how easy it is to get rid of or ignore both!)... I really dislike the hard buttons on the X. They seem difficult to use and unattractive. I want to see 4" vs 4.3". I want to see the difference between the Texas Instruments 1 GHz vs the Hummingbird. The Fasc is filled with MUCH bloatware. How about the X?
Ideally I would like to root the X, but ROMing isn't as important. The less I have to Root or theme a phone, the better in my opinion. I just bought ADW Deluxe so that will be used for sure.
Any thing else I should consider on why I would want the X?
(I am using the X and the Samsung both kind of as tests to decide what 2011 phone I want...)
i havent had the fascinate, but i had the captivate. to me there has been a night and day difference between the two phones. yes the screen on the galaxy s phones is nice, but thats about all i give them. the speed difference to me is negligible. i dont know how you can stand the gps issues! those were the final straw for me. i dont use motoblur, and never used touchwiz either. i use launcher pro and have never looked back. way to easy to customize it to what i want. plus i really like the look of sense (i know i know) and i'm always trying to mimic it. i actually enjoy having the hard buttons instead of capacitive as well, but that may just be preference. dx has much bloatware, but honestly what phone doesnt. use launcher pro and you can hide whatever you dont wanna see or get rid of by rooting. battery life on the x is sooo much better as well. i'm not sure why really, but it blows my captivate out of the water! now one negative that i dont like is not being able to access the internal memory for what i want. but besides that i've not looked back at all.
I will say the X is an amazing device. I haven't had the pleasure of trying the fascinate, but I do understand it is a great device as well. Motoblur straight up sucks. I hate it with a passion. As of now, custom ROMs are the way to go pretty much with any device. The tweaks are usually 95% of the time better than stock anything. I am running the Tranquility 3.6.0 ROM,and the X is amazing! Its fast, smooth, and battery life is great.
As for bloatware, yes there's a ton,but again, the devs are pretty good at ridding their ROMs of the crap. If there's anything you don't want, root explorer is perfect for removal of it.
Not sure if that was any help to you,but just a little insight I guess. I'm curious about the Fascinate myself, and not sure what your thoughts on trading are, but if you're looking to trade, I would take you up on it. My X has been in an otterbox defender case from the day I received it. It is in brand new condition. I would rate it a 9.9 out of 10. If you're interested, let me know!
Been there
I started off with a DX. I thought I would like the unlocked bootloader of the fascinate. I traded my DX for a fascinate. Within a week, i was missing my DX. It has just been a month and I traded the fascinate for another DX. I am SO much happier with the DX. While the fascinate is snappier, the DX makes up for it in a working GPS (DJ05 "fix" wasn't great) and a much better camera. Flash a ROM and get adw or launcher pro and you won't notice blur.
Summing it up: GET THE DX!
Like the other guy i had the Captivate and it was a hard choice for me to switch but i must say i havent looked back. First thing i really like the camera its very good especially with flash i mean come on samsung ****ty flip phones have a flash. Next Sure its not amoled but you know what the droid x still looks amazing. The batterlife on droid is ALOT better then captivate. Ummm I feel like its a little less buggy. Oh the GPS was a HUGEEEE factor for me. Just the fact that i couldnt connect was making me angry. IN the end you wont regret the switch and if you have any more direct questions ask away.

The X HAS a notification light, but no charging indicator light. However, there is an app you can get from the market that will enable the charging light.

I just traded my fascinate for the droid x....and can i say... "BEST THING IVE EVER DONE". Its a great phone...people talk about screen quality differences...but the extra real estate that the droid x has...totally makes up for it...and with Rubix loaded on this phone... it flies...
Just a quick update, the trade fell thru...
Then ces happened, and I think I will just ride out the sammy.
They are working on a 2.2 rom here and I have it set up just how I want.... I was looking forward to the X but I think that ship has sailed....

If I may weigh in. I as well had a captivate, then switched over to the DX. These are the main points I see:
1) I haven't found the locked bootloader to be much of an issue, I installed GummyJar, then Liberty and both work great.
2) AMOLED screen was amazing, but frankly I had forgotten about it and acclimated to the new one within a week.
3) Motoblur is terrible. Touchwiz is OK. Touchwiz lags more as you use it more because of the rfs file system. I was lucky that the Captivate devs figured out how to write new kernels based on Ext2 and Ext4 which was a marked difference. My DX doesn't seem to suffer from this at all.
4) GPS was a frustration point for me. If you advertise it, make sure it works. I shouldn't have to spend half my time on the phone fiddling with settings (suppresses a nightmare of LBSTestMode). My DX GPS is flawless so far.
5) DX will get updates faster than the Samsung phones. frustration point (and eventually breaking point) #2 was the absolute disregard by Samsung for the consumers begging for Froyo.
In short, Samsung strikes me as a company that doesn't care about their customers once they buy the product. If the rumors are true, then the issues surrounding the Vibrant 4G will attest to this. And on another note, my DX running Liberty ROM is far superior than any tweak I have EVER applied to my Captivate.
P.S. I know you said your trade fell through but I'm giving the opinion for any others that may be looking here to help decide. Plus, I think you should find a new person to trade with.

I am on my 3rd Dinc replacement, I always seem to get duds. I have an option to get the Droid X instead of yet another refurb'd Dinc.
First, what I do/dont do with my phone.
I use GPS voice nav all the time.
I load it up with my audio books
I dont use widgets, dont do facebook, etc.
I use the camera and camcorder to take pics and videos of my kids, and I do alot of texting, sending pics/etc.
Surf the web, but I dont watch videos on the phone at all.
I use a BT headset.
I dont play games on it at all.
Could care less if the phone is rooted or not, I am rooted but I use LauncherPro so I dont have to deal with the bloated Sensi UI.
I dont have more than 6 apps downloaded from the market.
I hate the absolute ****ty battery the Dinc has.
Going on that info, is the Droid X going to give more problems (been reading up on battery, volume levels, etc) than the Dinc?, can the Droid X be considered a similar phone to what I have, except it does have that big ass screen. I have played with one for a few minutes, it is large, I can see things better on that big screen, and that screen size is the only thing that is even making me consider getting that phone.
droid x
the droid x is a great phone all those things you mentioned that you like to do the droid x will do and ask for more.i have used mine for 12hr on one charge not heavy use just some videos, marketplace, texting, camera.
btw: the amoled screen on the incredible is not visable in sunlight.
I am very happy that I made the switch, the two things I miss most are some of the sense widgets and root, neither of which seem to be an issue for you. The screen is amazing, the camera is amazing and the battery is an improvement. All in all it's a great phone and I couldn't be happier with it, well maybe with root, but I'm not getting my hopes up anytime soon.

Did you even have an Incredible? Yes, it's not the easiest to see in sunlight, but it certainly isn't "invisible", please.
To the OP, I am still trying to decide if I am going to keep my X, or go back to my Incredible. The X seems to get a little better signal then the Incredible, and it certainly works better with my Motorola T505, that I use to listen to my music through my car stereo, but it's big. I don't know if I like the feel of it in my hand. The Incredible, is a nice size, and fits perfect, in pocket, and in hand. Maybe the answer will be the 4" Samsung Galaxy S, when that arrives at Verizon. Anyway, I wish I could give you a more definitive answer, but it's only been a few days, and I'm still giving the X a chance, before I decide which on to stay with.
I think the HTC phone despite screen size and battery life is better. The DroidX screen is horribly washed out. Even compared to other phones including the Evo.
There are things that Sense manages even if you use a different launcher that the X does not have.
Simple things like SMS/Gmail icon notifications on the X are non-existent.
You can't use contact pictures from exchange, the facebook integration with contacts is X is a joke compared to HTC.
The contact UI in sense is much better and easier to manage than the X.
The camera on the INC is faster in low light and does not turn pictures yellow like the Motorola. The Motorola lock screen is slow and buggy.
The HTC just provides a more complete experience out of the box without having to download a bunch of crap to get everything the way you want.

Learn to turn up the brightness on your display...
The Droid Incredible and Nexus One have identical displays and I can see my Nexus One fine in direct sunlight when I have brightness on 100%. Once I start turning down the brightness, the visibility fades exponentially.
If you compare, the x is much more advanced and snappier than the incredible. Let's say you don't need noise cancellation and the nifty features of the cameras audio and video capture. Then yeah your cool with the incredible, essentially they're the same. Just the x has a larger display.
Also, if you sit and think, every android has a little more than this one, others have less, more have innovative inserts like the x, and others are just pretty like the droid incredible and the htc evo. This all boils down to what you feel suits your needs.
Oh btw, verizon is releasing froyo in a few weeks. For the droid, incredible, droidx, and droid 2. BGR just got the tip for it. Its on twitter. Damn, verizon really really like to be dominant. Like they see no other alternative but to be great.

I must agree with pima. I absolutely love my Inc (I also bought the X and am deciding which to keep), but it is extremely difficult (for me anyways) to read things like text messages on it when outside in direct sunlight on a bright day, even when I set brightness all the way up.
Sense definitely runs more smoothly than Motoblur, however I don't care for either and can't comprehend why Motorola or HTC would want to try to fix something that is not broken. It's maddening that OS updates are held up for months because of this. I long for a phone that doesn't force me to use it's manufacturer's UI (and is less glitchy than the N1). But I digress...
I see enormous potential in the X's camera, but find it to be very frustrating in it's current form. For example, I couldn't use Barcode Scanner yesterday because the auto-focus kept zooming in and out; therefore, the camera couldn't focus on a barcode long enough to get a scan (the same phenomenon resulted in inconsistent pic's). Luckily, this is undoubtedly a software issue the should be resolved in short order through an OTA update (this may well be fixed in the update that is being rolled out today).
I love the X's keyboard. I actually also liked the Inc's keyboard relative to my previous phone, the N1. However, the X's keyboard is the best I've used on a smartphone (and I also owned an iphone 3gs at one low point in my life).
The X's battery is way better than the Inc's in my opinion. I get more life from it than I did from the 2150 extended battery I bought from HTC.
I can defintely empathize with oldmacnut's dilemma. Both phones have clear advantages/disadvantages. I'm finding that rooting/unlocking are more important to me than i realized, so I will likely go back to the Inc. However, if was in the OP's shoes I would probably go with the X, especially considering that its bugs are fixable and Froyo update is coming soon.
I came over to the x from the dinc myself, if u aren't rooting i'd go with the x. The hi is actually a little more gittery on the x but the biggest difference i can notice is the actual power of the proccessor on the x, not just clock speed. The x can run games that would make my dinc choke up and freeze. Look at the quadrant benchmarks. Its freakin rediculous. The dinc is a AWESOME phone. The build quality feels superior on the x and it really comes down to what fits u best. I can say i miss the DInc but i don't regret getting the x. Goodluck, this cud b a tough decision.

I did perfectly fine in sunlight...make sure the auto brightness is checked and you will be fine. Had the Incredible for 2 months...Now have the X, and I would say the X is may be a little bit better in sunlight, but NOT by much... Incredible size is better.. X is just TOO big.
I am starting to wonder if I should keep the X. May like the dinc more

They are both great devices. I had the choice of either or and I choose the Dinc. It's an HTC thing. IMO I think HTC has the best smartphones available period. Motorola choose to encrypt the bootlooder and imo that's extremely lame. Sure it may not matter to the average Joe but it's still sneaky.
I also have both and am still undecided which I prefer. As far as both out the box it depends on wether you're new to android or not. HTC Sense is very user friendly and I love the wigdgets. Motoblur is a bit laggy and the widgets aren't bad but not as good aa HTC. Performance in my opinion is about equal except games. The X is definitely superior although I never have a problem with the Inc. The Incs camera is slightly better but not much. I could go on but I think it comes down to root. I love to customize and make my phone unique. With the X it looks like that will be hard and the Inc is already rooted. And the X is really big but not uncomfortably so although I prefer the size of the Inc. So like I said before they're both great devices so I think root is really the deciding factor. Once the X is rooted it will probably be far superior.

Ok, so i'm considering switching carriers and giving up my samsung captive for a droid x... whatcha think? Pros? Cons? How do you like it, in comparison to other phones? How customisable is the droid x? Any input would be greatly appreciated lol, I like my captivate, but the droid x seems pretty superior.
I came from a HTC Touch (xv6900) that I had 2.2 running on a while ago... I must say the X is overall a perfect 10.
Why? Heres why:
The android operating system is basically the same on every phone... and if it is too buggy or full of bloat, there are DEVs our there making it possible for us noobs to keep up with how the Android system should be running(I am referring to Motorola's Blur BS that lags this phone down so much it is unbelievable).
So, knowing that the OS of the phone is pretty much just as good as it was meant to be for ya(and yes, the X is getting themes to make yours YOU), that only leaves the Hardware differences really....
So, all in all, if you think you are going to like the X, you will probably love it. If you are weary because it doesn't have a physical keyboard, then go get a Droid 2.
It is the best phone that Verizon currently offers BTW. Some can say the Droid 2 is better because it has a keyboard, well.... So does the X, it is just one on the screen. And, I have better components inside of this phone that make it.. well, BETTER.

I just did this exact switch about a month ago now. Haven't looped back one. The only thing I will say that I miss from the captivate is the AMOLED screen. Other than that, the DX wins hands down in speed and performance.
While the kernal is locked down, this hasn't stopped the first few custom roms from showing up. Also, I think there is a lot more devs and peers in the DX community which will make developing faster and support better IMO.
Do it!
Haha wow, you guys pretty much put to rest any doubts i had about the X, ill start making the necessary arrangements...i guess ill start seein ya around the X forums lol, thanks
and if all else fails... verizon will have the fascinate in a week, which IMO looks a whole lot better than the captivate and has flash! =)

I would advise anyone who is thinking about the Samsung to go check it out in stores when possible.... I hear it feels cheap.
The X does not
i have the vibrant and the droid x and will say that the vibrant doesn't quite have the solid feel of the Dx, though for me it fits my hand better than the Dx. the vibrant is a bit plasticky feeling and it has developed a minor squeak, not as bad as my old G1 though.
yes, the super amoled is a really nice screen but it's not all that 'super' on a sunny day....it's not quite as easy to read as the Dx when it's really bright outside.
they are both really nice phones and as is often the case, it comes down to choice of carrier.....which won't be a problem once they release the fascinate!
I hadn't really heard much about the fascinate except that its a slider, and I'd rather have a bar phone, which is why I was leaning toward droid x...didnt you say the kernel was locked on the droid x though? whats up with that? And I can still use wireless tether on X right?
Yes the kernal is locked, but this is just showing down custom roms (which we are starting to see...like flyx). I use wireless tether with no problems though! Can't wait to welcome another happy dx user!
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
the fascinate isn't a slider, sprint's version is.
Oh ok...one more question, even though im already halfway through switching lol, i heard that the samsung galaxy s series is faster than the droid x...is it super noticable? Or is that false lol...this is mostly aimed at anyone who had a samsung captivate or other phone in the galaxy series
Is the performance super noticable? No. Are the graphical capabilities? Yes.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
the only place i've noticed a difference is in 'benchmarks'.....in real world use, they both perform equally well, or poorly, depending on what you've got on your home screen.....if you start loading up widgets, live wallpaper, etc....they both become laggy. those damned widgets, however useful, can really bog the phone down.
i've put the same games on both phones and really seen no difference, other than the vibrant screen looking more colorful.......maybe someone else had a different experience.
I'm hoping to get some help in making this decision by asking the expert community here at xda. I have a Fascinate now & while it's been fine in most aspects it seems to have connectivity issues with the stock email app. I live & work in a rural area & need this to work reliably. I'm coming from a Droid Eris that had no problem in this area. My 30 days isn't up yet so I can switch to something else if that will solve my problem. All Big Red has done so far is push new prls to the phone. Is the X better with 3g reception?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
IMO the Motorola Droid X has the best antenna ever created under Big Red, has one of the best 3G reception, little to no drop calls with my DX, compared to the other android devices out there.
I'm glad you've had that experience with it so far, but can I ask what kind of area are you in? Is it metro or rural or a mix of both? How's email perform?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I live in a small town (2500) and I am 60 miles away from a large town. I have always had issues with my reception from verizon with my last 2 smart phones. Had the Imagio and dropped calls all day long. Now I have the DX and drop calls all day long.
My wife has a palm pre and never drops calls. Not that I would suggest a pre. I am just saying- unless you can talk to another X user in your area - the answers here aren't going to be a great help.
I haven't had any problems receiving emails though. But the 3G signal on the X where I live is very sporadic. I have a strong signal, I have a weak signal, I have no signal, back to strong, all within 5 minutes seated at the same desk.
And you can forget wifi tether on the X (at least my experience and many others I have read). USB tether works fine- but wifi tether is a lost cause. Constant disconnections.
I will also add this- if you want to do modifications to your phone or any sort of customizations- stick with the fascinate. Motorola has locked the boot loader on the X. We have root. But it doesn't look good for "TRULY" custom roms.
Just my input.
Are there any ex-Fascinate owners that have gone to the X? Anyone with an X in Northern Michigan?

I live in a metro area and sometimes travel to the rural areas, but mainly metro area. Emails are good, except i hate the push option on the DX native email client TBH, sometimes it doesn't always work properly. Thats my only issue. If your in a rural area and your option is the DX or Fascinate, the better option is the DX, it has a better antenna design which the Fascinate lacks in signal strength.
I carry a DX while my wife carries a fascinate, and from what I can tell you about the two phones is this...
first off we both first had the Drois Eris...
I recieved my DX @ launch... and my wife recieved her Fascinate @ launch... so we've had some time to mess with these devices
The fascinate is a beautiful phone, the screen is amazing and it extremely snappy. The signal is equal to the DX in Surprise, AZ and the 3g speed is just about the same... as for the "GPS Issues" with the Fascinate, I have yet to see any problems with the gps on the phone.... I'd say that the phones are very equal in speed and signal... I'd reccomend the fascinate to anyone looking for a new android handset on vzw.
I love my X.. there's no way I would go to the fascinate... but this is my opinion... I'd suggest playin with both first before taking my opinion to heart
The DX feels like it was made to last... I pick up the fascinate and I wonder if i hold it to tight will it snap in half... I'm also not a fan of the Super-amoled screen, yes the colors are better, the contast is amazing, and generaly is just plan 'ol better than TFT... but no thx, I like the DX screen... I hate the fact on the amoled that I can make out each individual led... it drives me crazy.... and the weight of the fascinate isnt impressive... Yea it's light... but i want to feel like I have something when I pick it up... I want a little weight to it...
So here's my opinion
if you don't have a DX yet... get a fascinate
if you have a DX allready.. stick with the DX...
if you came from the Eris... get the Facinate ( better for people used to Sence UI )
if you came from the Droid... get the X ( or the D2 )
that's my $0.02

I thought there were already a couple custom ROMs out there?
I know the bootloader is locked (still) but I have confidence it will get hacked eventually. It is my understanding that the ROMs that are there are pretty well customized.
My problem with the Fascinate is the lockdown that was put on it by Verizon. I can't wait until it's rooted and someone releases a ROM so I can de-crapify it.

Wrong...there are custom roms, just not custom kernels. Tranquility, FlyX, and rubiX are not deodex themes...
The DX will provide you with better signal where reception is typically poor. If that is your main priority, then the DX is for you.
At this point, the bootloader being cracked is bordering a lost cause. If you're fine with debloating your phone of crap, using themes, and maybe a ROM or two during your time with the phone.. the DX is fine. If you really want to do things like overclock the phone or the like, the Fascinate will be your best choice.
Anything beyond those 2 aspects are merely subjective opinion between any 2 people you pick to ask.

Well put. I agree with this man right here. This should be how you decide.

Just to clarify, I've got the Fascinate now & am just trying to find out if moving to the X would be any better for me performance-wise right now. I have no doubt that the devs and modders here at xda will do everything possible to get both phones to their full potential. Thanks for all the input, btw.

well if u have the fascinate now, apply lag-fix and enjoy ur device.
TBH, the fascinate has better specs then the DX does, its just the carrier downsized both devices for consumer's.
1Ghz Hummingbird processor, 512MB ram, 512KB L2 cache, dedicated GPU (PowerVP SGX 540), SAMOLED display.
I can say after playing around with the fascinate a little more that the camera on the samsung is alot better than the one on the X
I have the Incredible, my wife has the X...and I just got done setting up a Fascinate on my account for my mother. I LOVE my Incredible. That said, if I could have convinced my mom that she wanted my Incredible more, I'd have kept the Fascinate. Holy crap, that phone is gorgeous. Slim, AMAZING screen...
I'm not a fan of TouchWiz, but it was SUPER easy to root. Using titanium, I "froze" the bloatware so it won't load/run/appear in the app tray. It can be "unfrozen" in order to un-root and upgrade to 2.2. It's far snappier than both my Incredible and my wife's stock 2.2 X. The screen can't be touched.
The ONE complaint: WiFi signal strength seems to be weak. Also, 3g signal appeared lower than my Incredible in the same location, however, speed tests were almost identical every time.
google project voodoo it wont say its out for the Fascinate officially until version 5
check the post out under Samsung Fascinate---> Development---->[RELEASE] Voodoo (v0.2) ext4 lagfix for Fascinate!
Im sorry I tried to post links but it wont let me yet
I have a Fascinate my wife has the Droid X. I held off on the Droid X to check the Fascinate out. I use both phones Daily and I can honestly say I didnt think the Fascinate would compare oooh i was so wrong. performance wise if its better and after you visit the links I posted alot better. Someone said that the Fascinate feels frail feels sturdy to me just thin I have this gel case for it that makes it feal very sturdy like the X I havnt had a dropped call on the Fascinate or Droid X (unless I talk to family that have tmobile lol). take it from someone who was had bias at first and looked down on the Fascinate untill I got to try it out Keep the Fascinate. My 30 days arrent up but I definately wont go back for the DX. I almost forgot the Fascinate doesnt have a locked bootloader anything can happen but I highly doubt that it will be cracked.
droid x all the waay, but the Incredible is a good choice to just throwing that out there
I switched to a droid x from a fascinate. Gave the fascinate to my wife.
Fascinate screen is way more vibrant. Deeper blacks, brighter colors. The droid x screen is bright, but the colors don't pop out like the fascinate, and the black levels are nowhere near as deep.
I like the larger feel and the rubberized accents of the droid x, the fascinate was too small and slippery feeling.
The droid x camera doesn't do low light pictures as well as the fascinate in my opinion. The fascinate seemed to take pretty decent indoor pictures, most of the ones I've taken with the X are slighty blurry.
The X seems more polished to me. I had significantly more hangs and freezes with the fascinate. I don't think I've had a single hang or freeze with the X to date. Maybe that will get better on the fascinate with time and Froyo updates.
I felt like I could swype better on the X than the fascinate. Maybe the slight screen size difference helps out in typing.
I think the call quality on the X is better than the fascinate as well.
I think the fascinate has the potential to be an excellent phone with some updates, but the X is an excellent phone today.
The only thing that has me really "worried" about the X is the lack of true custom roms and if/when they will ever be available.
Summary- Scroll down to get a better description -------------------------------------
Droid X Pros:Gorilla Glass, Default App is Google, Google Maps instead of VZ Navigator, HDMI Port, Original Android Feeling with a little of blurr, built good so it don't feel cheap, Larger screen, Physical Camera button
Droid X Cons:Large, no Super AMOLED ( so not as vibrant as samsung), Lagged a few times on me on the lock screen.
Samsung Pros: Super AMOLED Screen, Large screen but very accessible, have not seen too much lag
Samsung Cons:No physical camera button, Samsung's UI (personally do not like it), Made of flexible Plastic and you don't feel like you have anything in your hand
Detail Description --------------------------------------------------------
I got the Samsung Fascinate when it was buy one get one free. Brother picked up one and I picked up one.
I dislike samsungs UI compared to the original android on HTC's like the G1, as I got that when it came out a while back. This would be his first Android phone so I knew he wouldn't really know the difference so he would be fine. But I saw the droid x in the store and it was in back order I just picked up the Samsung but not even more than a week I traded somebody for a droid x brand new in the box and I am happy to say I am loving the droid x.
Also Droid X has Gorilla Glass so it isn't as vulnerable as the Samsung
I use the HDMI port a lot so thats a big factor. & also take a lot of pictures and the camera is a little bit better on the X.
BIGGEST PRO: You can use Google Maps as the default app on the car dock where-as the Fascinate you have to use VZ Navigator. And Bing isn't set to the default search engine. ( I have heard the 2.2 update will fix this but I am impatient lol )
I currently have a Samsung Fascinate, and while I love its superior screen and hardware, I'm not too confident in Samsung's commitment to this phone. I am toying with the idea of exchanging my phone for a Droid X, but I have a couple of questions. I am aware that the X has a locked down bootloader, and playing around with it is a highwire act. Is the original sbf I think it's called available so if something goes wrong you can restore it to stock? I recall Motorola forcing sites to remove this file. Also, if that is no longer available, what safeguards are generally used when modding? Thanks for your time and consideration.
The file is available here...
http://rootzwiki.com/
...if you are even considering an X- I would grab it.
Without this file- there aren't many safeguards. You can create a nandroid backup- but in certain cases you can't even get into recovery to load your back up. In that situation if you do not have the SBF file all is lost.
If you really like doing mods to your phone- I would not buy the X. I have one and I am sorry that I did not wait for a phone that can run "real" custom roms - as in custom kernels and all.
The phone is pretty awesome as is. But I like to do stuff to my phone.
The x has custom roms and kernels I am running simply stunning x and 1.2ghz overclock so what do you mean no customization. I had the fascinate and the rims half the time messed the phone up and the kernels were no good. The Droid x is the most popular phone everybody is working on it. So I think it is the best phone.

I have been using smartphones since 2003 and this is my 3rd android phone. First I used the Hero, then the droid 1. That phone really set the bar for me in terms what a phone can do with mods working on it. To the previous poster, I'm afraid that the setup of the droid x keeps it from truly having a custom kerna, and the kernals on the fascinate now are pretty good. I guess I will have to sit on this phone and deal with Samsung. Hopefully they do right by the millions who have purchased this phone, but they may already be preparing the replacement for this phone in a couple of months. I appreciate your input, but it looks like the droid x just may not be the phone for me. Thanks and take care.

Please understand that the Fascinate's screen and hardware is NOT superior to the DX. I was in the store comparing them. Whereas the SF's screen is super amoled, the colors being more vibrant, the screen is kind of dark especially in sunlight. Me? I need bright. Dx does it. Also, the DX is metal and therefore more durable, imo.
Me? I'm running it overclocked consistently at 1.35 ghz and have a custom rom/theme. I love it. It's a great. Don't hesitate to get it.
I was faced with the choice for my daughter's new smartphone. The SF was never in the running. I didn't like the plasticky feel and the dim screen. So, I got the Incredible for her, kinda a compromise. Good luck. Feel free to ask more questions!
I am not flaming or trying to start a thread fight. Having said that... As an ex incredible owner, now facinate with reception issues, I too have looked at the X to fulfill my needs. The X's screen being the deal breaker. I have and did again today mess with my friends X and the post above about the facinate having a dim screen is hogwash. If the X came anywhere close to having as nice, crisp and non washed out looking display I would buy it in a heart beat but it doesn't. Everything else is great on the X but after owning the best display made I can't go backwards. Infact, the inc display is better (imo) And to the gentlemen above, you couldn't have bought a better phone for your daughter... (imo)
Edit:
I'm going with the X due to reception issues with my facinate...

I'm on Cappy #3. And now my speaker doesn't work.
I'm going to argue a lemon and see if ATT can't let me have a different phone.
I was looking at the Atrix but- has anyone used both the Captivate and Atrix? Why would I chose the Atrix? I'm using Serendipity ROM, it's great, fast...
I don't really use GPS much (mainly because it sucks- but also because I just don't use it). So overall I'm happy, I'm just tired of the Captivate hardware issues.
What scares me about the Atrix is the locked bootloader. If it works out of the box, great, but you sure do limit support with a locked bootloader. But maybe Motorola actually updates it and there's not a need for custom ROMs?
My other options, were perhaps waiting for the SGS II (or something else). It's still Samsung, but I have a feeling, just like the Captivate, the draw of the specs and beautiful screen might be too hard to resist.
June iPhone 5 launch isn't too far away, either. But the problem with both of these, is I don't know if ATT will let me get a brand new-just-released device, you know?
I also considered getting the iPhone 4 and just living with the Apple nonsense world until this summer- and selling it (iPhone fanboys pay crazy money for those devices, I could flip it easily).
But even with the retina display, I don't know if I could live with an LCD display. ???????
Ideas?
I've got the vibrant, the captivate and just picked up the atrix last week.
Only thing that really bothers me is the screen, the colours are so much less vibrant, its not a deal killer but i don't like the washed out look.
the camera app on the atrix is kinda odd too, i prefer the galaxy one, but you get used to it, its slow to focus and no spot focus.
i miss the quiet mode alarm clock of the captivate too. i liked being able to access the wifi off on and by dragging down at the top, the motoblur is initially annoying.
took me a little while to get used to the power button placement, i dig the fingerprint reader. the usb connection is in an annoying location (off to the side) and at least you get and hdmi cable with it.
its a lot more fluid speedwise, dont get the lag i was used to with the galaxy.
Screen vs. Screen, captivate kills it. The motion blur is so noticeable on the atrix its almost a slap in the face.
The screens between the captivate and atrix are completely different and appeal to different people. Yes the captivate is much more vivid and bright but the atrix's qHD display is much more accurate and crisp and the graphics when gaming blow the captivate out of the water imo.
The NVIDIA processor and gpu make a big difference in screen quality and quicker rendering of images and videos.
I have both a captivate and atrix but I use my atrix as my daily phone due to the battery life and stable gps.
Don't get me wrong though i love being able to mod my captivate which is a big reason why I have not sold it yet.
If you have the option to grab the atrix, take it, it will be a major upgrade.
Atrix wins hands down. While the screen is more vibrant on the cappy, i think the quality is better on the Atrix. Even though the first atrix i got had some sort of hardware issue, i was just able to return it and have it work. WIth the cappy i was stuck with a terrible GPS no matter how many times i'd return it. The camera on the captivate seems to be much better tho unless you're dealing with night shots or out door shots in the bright sun.
While i miss the community of the captivate and all the possibilities of Roms, i'm quite content with my atrix knowing with almost certainty that i'll get gingerbread and i won't have to wait almost a year for it.
The screen really isn't good on the Atrix; I compared tthe Captivate, Nexus 1 , and Atrix aide by side and ended up taking the Atrix back and selling the Captivate.
If you want a higher resolution, just go and get a LCD density app off the market.
As for speed, the Atrix really isn't that much faster. Foe the most part, all apps aside from games aren't really CPU heavy, it's the allocation of apps all running at once that slows people down. If you properly manage your running apps then you shouldn't see much of a seed difference. (My N1 and Atrix are nearly identical).

After two weeks of experience with the atrix and a few months with the captivate I can say this:
The atrix has a better build quality, awesome fingerprint scanner (no one can use my phone/log into my bank account but me and I'm too lazy to type a code or dawing shapes everytime I want to use it) ,amazing GPS reception (works even indoors!, sometimes I get 1meter accuracy!) a better battery and a better performance (twice the ram the cappy has (great for multitasking and battery juice), dual core cpu (less noticeable at this time), etc)
The Captivate has amazing screen colors but lower res (it took me a few days to get used to the atrix, I sure would give up on qhd for led) More games support it at this time, thicker&lighter, neat camera (way better than the atrix, at least at day light) looks better (from my point of view) and much more customizable (due to unlocked bootloader - endless roms, kernels, etc)
Horrible GPS reception and annoying build quality (I heard "clicks" when texting) made me dump the cappy and buying the atrix.
If you don't use GPS much (I use it all the time) and you don't care about
build quality (acceptable on the atrix but far from being htc) you can
stick with your GalaxyS, overall, it is a pretty good phone.
Bottom line is, from my point of view, is that the atrix is for more mature and professional usage/business, and the GalaxyS is better for teens/early 20's (better multimedia capabilities) - Since I just turned 26 I changed it
Both phones have terrible laggy home screens so I didn't consider using touchwiz nor motoblur and I didn't even took it as a feature (gde with
odestrian/launcherpro will make your handset happy)
Me, after having I7500 and Captivate, I'm done with Samsung, at least for now, looks like I'm gonna stick with my atrix for at least two years (but who knows..)
I prefer to the qHD resolution. Color on Atrix is not that bad it is acceptable. I also have a Samsung Wave with Super Amoled and i can still live with Atrix's screen. It is not that biggie as many people are telling. First time i looked at Samsung Wave's screen i fell in love with it and bought it. Then i showed it to friends and they were impressed and jealous. But now i even forget i have a Super Amoled to watch photos and play games. Many people look at my Wave dont show their impress even though they have never used any better than an LCD phone.
So, with the Captivate, an unlocked bootloader means we can custom ROM it and strip the crappy UI out and use whatever we want (and also do things like Voodoo).
That does not exist on the Atrix. That's part of my worry??? Are you content with just using Launcher Pro?
Let me ask this, I'd definitely consider the iPhone 4's to be the best looking LCD out there right now in a phone, how does the Atrix compare to it?
Design Gears dumped the Atrix, eh? That isn't too reassuring, lol.
I took my atrix back. Couldn't stand the screen, horrible viewing angles horrible color and the phone overall imo was junk. I had too many freezups and had to do 3 master resets on it in a matter of 2 weeks. 1 of those weeks it sat in its box on the fridge.
I would wait for something else to come along. It won't be much longer before new phones hit the market. I would stay away from iphone also unless if you don't mind eating spaghetti every day.

I came from a Nexus One where it seemed like I flashed a new ROM every week. I now have an Atrix and have been very happy with it. Locked bootloader... doesn't bother me. Everything I have wanted to do with it have been possible with root access and Launcher Pro Plus. IMHO, the screen is fantastic (both resolution and colors) (it took a few day of getting used to the colors), motoblur does not slow the phone down (from a skinning standpoint, it's ugly but I have fixed that with custom icons/widgets (screenshot), and I will be keeping this phone for a while now.
edit: oh, and the phone is crazy fast!
