Don't know about the first question, but the camera outputs 720x480. Try recording a video and checking your sd card to see the format.
it natively reads H.263 (encode and decode) MPEG-4 SP (encode and decode) H.264 AVC (decode), and no doubt reads many others with apps downloaded from the market. I beleive on the SD Card put them in a folder called "Video". Not sure about what the video output format is but I do know it is compatible with Youtube Uploading.

what extensions do those equate to? avi? wmv? m4v?
avi, mp4, not sure about wmv.
Just to test, I downloaded the 720P video of "Elephant's Dream" in MP4 format. . . AMAZING quality. :-D
http://www.savevid.com/video/elephants-dream-hd-1080p.html Scroll down and download the MP4 version.
Link says 1080, but pretty sure the MP4 is only 720.
DivX???

Im using a Mac and will be using doubleTwist (Also on PC)
Because it syncs with my iTunes but you can just drop and drag videos and it will convert to the correct format you
It will even detect your device as a Nexus One
MP4 is simply an encapsulation method, many MP4s are just going to be incompatible. There are pretty fine settings needed to get it to work, but I believe you'll want to transcode movies to h.264 or h.263 for video and aac audio, in 480x800.
If you want to be sure you can view the Nexus' videos on your PC, set up a youtube account and upload them after recording. Then you can log into your YouTube account and download them as MP4 (h.264)

Hey Blueman... I just plugged in the sdcard and made a new folder called video and put some movies and music videos in there. Once inserted back into the handset they were in my gallery, was pretty easy.

what format?
I always codec my videos to mp4 or m4v... I have loads of videos I've converted for my Omnia HD which are mostly mp4 and divx.... haven't tried any divx yet but the mp4's play just fine.
In case anyone needs an awesome video converter the best one IMO is format factory, which is free and has tons of presets and is easy to use.

m4v's aren't showing up on mine, they play the audio, but the video is not there.

i'm getting the same thing from an mkv file i encode. i do have some other mp4's working, but can't figure out the settings to get every movie working. how annoying. just support more formats!
why arent avi's supported?
Hi .
SO i just got my Glaxy tab and i am trying to move a few video files from my PC to the tab .
When i try to copy them Windows 7 suggest me to convert them .
So when i am copying MP4 files without convert they look so small that i can bearly see anything . But if i try to convert them i takes about 3 hours to copy a 500MB file ?
When trying to copy WMV file without converting it doesnt work ...
Any suggestion or best practice on moving video files to the tab ?
I have movies in mp4 and m4v and they also look small in the included video player. However, in mVideoPlayer they fill the screen just fine.
I just downloaded a 700mb file via Dropbox and it took about 25 minutes.
Convert them using your own software then transfer them over, or don't convert and use a different video player that can stretch your video (Rock Player, mVideoPlayer, VPlayer).
imo this is the place the tablet is the most lacking - default video player is absolutely balls.

Use MoboPlayer. Its free and they have a codec for 3.1 tabs that plays anything. You can also view default size, full screen, vertical stretch, and 16:9. Definitely the was to go...just drag/drop, deny conversion, and play with MoboPlayer.
MKV Video Format Supported?

Yeah, supports 720p mkv, dunno about 1080p.

It did not support 1080p for me. I had the same video file in both 720p and 1080p. Mobo played the 720p perfectly, but would not open the 1080p version.
I dont think you need to convert anything. Just copy the file and play it in Mobo Player or Rock player. I think you can ignore the Windows notification and try the playback on the Tab first.
720p works fine

I just tested the 720p and it works beautifully. Also works for mkv movies I just loaded! Fantastic!!
Another option is to use a program like xmedia recode to convert the file into native resolution for the tab; and in a container which is compatible, then push it to you tab.
This is usually how I get my movies to work on my droid; haven't tried it yet, but it's on the list of things to do tonight.
for those that say they've had luck with the MKV container, can you share your encoding profile? I've not been able to get a high profile encoded video to play in an mkv container. I can demux & remux into an mp4 container and the same video works. But, I loose the ac3 audio.
Still at work.

I didnt encode the mkv movie that I have...I snagged it from my brother but when I get home tonight I'll look it up and post it back here.
Transferring movies
I usually use SwiFTP and Cyberduck to transfer movies to my IO tab. Since I'm on a mac, there's no native usb transfer capability, and it only takes about 3 minutes to transfer a 700mb avi.
Thanks.
Mine are encoded with High L4.0. I think MKVs will only work if they are L3.1 or lower.
I for one would just let windows convertthem. It takes forever but it works perfectly. Did this with RED 720p and rhe movie played flawlessly in diff media playes. Didnt do it with a 720p episode of southpark and all media players had good audio but video was lagging behind. Mobo almost had it in sync but even that was off by a bit. Gonna go convert a bunch of music videos andput those suckers onhere

then what the heck is wrong with my 10.1, it plays video great, but no sound in moboplayer
I've been messing around with multiple video formats (trying to get movies for myself as well as my kids onto my Transformer) and was curious as to what formats people have had the best luck with.
I have some 720P mkv files that have been very laggy (audio/video sync issues) (with various different video apps, vPlayer being the one that I had the most luck with.)
I'd prefer not to have to re-do most of my video files, but if I have to do it, I'm just curious as to what formats people have had the best luck with.
Also, to clarify, most files have been converted via Handbrake.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

The default video player supports MP4 files which I've had no problems with, it may even be supported by the hardware acceleration. I've had a 1080p MP4 file @ ~5MB/sec video quality in the past and that played back without any real lag. I too used Handbrake to convert from the original WMV to get the MP4.
I don't do HD so I have SD dvd ripped MKVs converted into MP4s constrained to size using handbrake. My rule of thumb on size is the number of hours:minutes = gig.mb. (So a 2 hours, 30 minute movie would be 2.5 gigs)
Works fine and quality is great.

If I have a DVD, can I rip it in Handbrake? And if so, what settings should I use? I'm just looking for the easiest way to rip some DVDs to have with me...thanks!

The stock player will accelerate h.264 video if it's in an mp4 container. In an .mkv container it will only play in one of the third party apps (which won't use hardware acceleration). You can use Handbrake to convert them to mp4 files and it will be quite quick if you just copy the video and audio. You can't just rename .mkv to .mp4 unfortunately, but without having to change the video inside the .mkv the conversion should be really fast (like 3-4 minutes per movie).

Thank you to all of you for your suggestions.
I've found an app that allows for a pretty quick conversion of the mkv to mp4 files and they have worked without a hitch.
Since, I can't post links, I'll just say that I used the mkv/avi to mp4 tool that is on sourceforge for the conversions.
Thank you again for your help.
Can I do a modification to enable it after it's rooted?
I tried to play .wmv files with floor model but I have no luck.
I have a lot of ripped DVDs in .mp4 (480p) format, but I also have several .wmv files downloaded. The size will drastically increase if I re-encode to .mp4 without degrading quality.
i think its in /etc/media_profiles.xml in bottom of file, change to "yes" and save back.
remember to have system r/w
MKV
You can attempt to convert the files to MKV.
The system by default does not play back this file source but there is a player called Mobo Player available on the market.
I have done a few mp4 720p conversions to mkv 720p and I am pleased to say they worked while not being to to big (average size is 1-2gigs per 1.5hrs)
I have read reports that Diceplayer handles mkv files. You might want to give that a try.
Hello Friends If Your Looking For A Video Player to Play all types of Video
Check out MX Video Player and also don`t forget to download the codec for those video ,been watching all types of video on the go .peace
I am comparing encodes of MP4 and MKV based video files using Handbrake as the encoder and x264 as the compression type.
I am using a Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the results are less than inspiring.
Using the default Video player on the Tab, MKV's stutter. Anamorphic MKV's also do not display in the correct aspect ratio. Non-Anamorphic videos are larger and display correctly but stutter.
MP4's have no such problem.
Using the default Video player on the Galaxy S, both MKV's and MP4s play without stuttering however Anamorphic videos do not display in the correct aspect ratio, but non-anamorphic videos play fine - as expected.
Dice looks like it has received an update which now actually plays correctly all formats and aspect ratios.
I'd rather find a solution to get MKV's play correctly in the correct aspect ratio without stuttering using the stock video player on both Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Samsung Galaxy S.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Simon
Just fork out the cash for Dice player. It plays everything correctly and can be used on both devices under your account.
I think you may want to look at encoding settings.
Saw your post and it intrigued me because normally I don't use MKV files but given the fact that I sometimes watch my rips in loud areas I thought that it might be useful to have subtitles along with my rips.
So I did a little experiment taking a rip of my Cars 2 bluray that I did for my GT in MP4 format that already played well on the tab and applying an SRT to it using MKVMerge. The resulting MKV file plays well in Dice player with subtitles showing up just fine.
What settings do you use in handbrake?
For me I'm using max width of 1280 (720p), no video filters, AAC audio with a bitrate of 160, and advanced settings tab settings of 3 reference frames, 0 b-frames, CABAC off, 8x8 tranform off, p-frames off, psychovisual off and all other settings to the right at defaults.
Im using a max height of 576 and strict anamorphic (so actual width is never more than 720 but displayh size is max 1024), no cropping, no filters, x264, 160 bitrate aac audio. Im using Default settings as per the Regular > Normal profile, but bumped reference and max b frames to 3, and subpixel me & mode detection to seven.
Encode the same video, one in an MP4 container and one in MKV results in only the MKV stuttering. Same settings for both though.
Just tried that MKVMerge to Mux the MP4 to MKV and the resultant file still stutters using the stock video player app.
Dice however works flawlessly! course Im annoyed that I have to fork out £3.50 for an app that works when it should really be part of Android.
The stock player for the 10.1 doesn't support mkv (not listed as a supoprted container in the specs) that's why you get the stutter. Dice is the best and well worth your purchase. Bs player is free and is almost as good as dice but it has problems seeking during playback on mkv 's.
Thanks songmeesay - best answer I've heard. I like technical limitations like that. It's a finite answer!
So MP4 is a preferred choice on the Tab plus it handles anamorphic videos.
Do you guys have any knowledge of the Galaxy S and why that doesn't handle Anamorphic videos correctly?
Im still guessing my three choices are:
Convert to MKV Anamorphic- smaller files but need to use Dice
Convert to MP4 Anamorphic- smaller files, plays well on Tab, but will need Dice on Galaxy S
Convert to MP4 non anamorphic- larger files, but larger scope for support on the Tab, S and will of course play back in Dice...
Tricky decision. What would you guys go with?
How to Ideal way to convert MKV files to MP4 format ?
