I am finding the same issue. It seems to happen for me if I have been using Google Sky Map or Street View in Google Maps.
After using either the Auto Rotate stops working and I have to re-start the phone

Listed as a known issue in the sticky, guys.
The accelerometer becomes locked after using Google Sky Map. Its a bug either on GB or Sky Map/Street View apps themselves.

I think that it's gingerbread a software issue not a hardware issue.

I doubt it because I haven't had any issues like this in any other app besides skymap. Mind listing some of the apps you've noticed this in? I'll see if I can duplicate.

Well it's not that bad but, it's bad. especially when I purchase unlocked for hundreds of dollars and I had highly expected a great experience from gingerbread as a Google os. It happened in XP moto and maps and GPS but not all the time and the only fix is to restart the phone so it's a software problem. I also have a Samsung vibrant and never had this issue with it but they are similar hardware specs...

Similar hardware specs, yeah, but that doesn't rule out the fact that you might have picked up a phone with a bad piece of hardware. It could have been damaged in assembly, or shipment, or by an act of God.
I've only been able to duplicate this issue thus far in Sky Map. I just tried Street View on my phone and had no problems, and I'm not sure what those other apps you mentioned might be.
More information please.

Well if me and you and dozens of others who own this device are having somewhat the same issues it should not matter rather if it's the hardware that's at fault or software that's at fault but, indeed I would like to hope it's a software issue because it can be simply fixed with a ota update other then shipping back to bestbuy. This is a growing issue and it's only going to get bigger every day. Odd but Google+gingerbread=Epic Fail?

No its not. I've never experienced any of those problems out of the box.
Sounds like you've got a poorly behaving app running and slowing things down. Grab an app called OS Monitor or similar and see if you can see anything running up the CPU.
My NS is the snappiest, most responsive phone I've owned to date; it's even better than my Galaxy S i9000 on Froyo.

i get lag maybe once in a blue moon. I have 7 mb internet which is pretty solid
What I've noticed on my N7 -- and what I think might actually be the issue, here -- is that the WiFi is somewhat fiddly. On my VZW-provided Actiontec junker, it's just fine. On my Asus (irony!) N-16 running TomatoWRT, on the other hand, it's less than happy; data connections hang, which shows up in the Play store as difficulty pulling up assets (images, pages, etc) -- which looks kind of like really nasty laggyness.
I haven't had the opportunity or the urge to diagnose yet, but the first thing I'm going to do is try changing the channel on the router, followed shortly by probably changing every other setting. Then I'll curse for a while because I'll have borked the router config without having made a backup. Because that's how these things work.

Update coming?????

I hope google is working on a update to the 4.1.1 to the n7 to clean up the current bugs. Any inside if its coming?
thnx

Chrome seems laggier than it should be, hope there is some issue there than can be fixed to improve performance.
Every Nexus 7 I've had so far (that'd be 4) have all had washed out looking greens and yellows and over saturated whites. Hoping that is something a patch can fix.
Tegra 3's Prism smart dimmer feature causes the screen to look over exposed while and after videos play (fades away after a few seconds). I've disabled the smart dimmer, so it's okay for me, but seems like an issue that needs a patch.
I have seen nothing in JB 4.1.1 that would require an update at this point.
Might as well expect an update for dark pixels.

Screen flickering is a known hardware issue
Mine lags bad from time to time. I wonder if it has to do with google now because my galaxy nexus lags just as bad if not worse when i tap the google now search bar. I was trying to find and app (shazam) and thought it would be faster to look for it through now, but it lagged and lagged and lagged. By the time I got the app open, the song was over and I couldn't tag it.
My Gnexus is great, fast ,no complains at all,Google now is quick I got no lag, but on the nexus 7 it becomes a problem to the point that I have to switch it off and use the browser.

I use dropbox which is pretty much the same in terms of resources. I have play movies, music, currents, books. I have pandora on there, google now, generally everything you could need. I've done this on both stock 4.1.1 and on Paranoid Android (every iteration). Literally NO lag. Even being slightly underclocked.

Nope, it's from a poorly soldered wifi chip, that is drawing power away from the screen when wifi is low.
I had this issue, and called Google personally for support, and the person confirmed that the screen flickering was hardware, not software.

Never had any of that so I doubt its a "software issue". If it is its likely something you installed.
quick update about the lag on the nexus7:
i used Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5.2 to root and install recovery about 4 times ,and in all this times i had problems with lag ,so two days ago i decided to restart again and root the n7 with Galaxy Nexus ToolKit v2.0 but without installing the custom recovery.
now it very quick and as no lag at all,and yes i loaded the identical apps all the previous time.
ideas???

I think most of the lag is because of a bad app or a setting somewhere. Glad to hear you got it sorted out. I'm just looking forward to the update that fixes the bootloader issues with accessing recovery without the usb cable or using terminal commands/adb/apps.

You said your phone shuts off after hard use, and you said it is really hot when it shuts down. This sounds like a hardware problem. When the processor gets too hot, the device kills power to protect it from frying. Almost every computer has a similar last-resort power-off feature to protect its hardware.
Now the real question: What is making the device overheat? Most likely this is a hardware problem, but there is a remote possibility that the problem could be a rouge app.
A factory reset will remove the apps you installed. If there is an app running an infinite loop in the background, a factory reset might fix the problem. (I remember you said you are running stock without root, so there are no firmware issues. The only possible software issues are with your apps.)
I am sorry to say that you might have a defective board.

But why start doing that after a month of using it? The only new I did was using the maps app for more than 4hours... A friend toll me to clear cache on map apps...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
If the problem really is hardware, it was a defect that made it past quality control. It's the same reason why a new hard drive might fail after a week of usage--infant mortality. Infant mortality is quite rare, but it does happen nevertheless.
Fortunately, Google's replacement procedure is quite nice compared to most other companies. If Google sends you a replacement, you can keep your existing phone until the replacement arrives. This way, you are not left without a phone temporarily.
Update! Did a factory reset and root it and it's good now! Looks like an app was causing the rebooting... Thanks for the help!

episodes of screen unresponsiveness after updating to kitkat

Hi everyone
So I update my N9005 to the official polish kitkat firmware and I've been experiencing episodes of screen unresponsiveness very often. Anybody else has this problem? Anybody managed to fix it?
P.S I'm aware of the counterfeit/unoriginal s-view flip covers issue which I'm having as well but the thread isn't about it.
Hope someone has a solution.

Hello, I have been experiencing moments of "freezing" or unresponsiveness as well.
For me, it seemed to be due to chrome or using power saving mode. (People in another forum were blaming their droid maxxs freezing problem on chrome) I disabled chrome and disabled power saving mode.
Then I started using opera. I experienced another moment of unresponsiveness using opera without the power saving mode.
I was thinking back to the first times that it happened and it seemed to be paired to the wifi download and upload symbol being active in upload and download activity.
I know that correlation does not mean causation, but I think it is worth exploring if the network activity is causing it to somehow hang.
This bizzar occurance made me perform a factory wipe leading to another round of issues involving processing err_0000, but that is another story; sadly, it didn't even fix the issue.
OP, are you still experiencing the moments of unresponsiveness? If you are, have you noticed the events that are correlated with the event?
Has anybody else experienced this or found a remedy?
It could be one of the apps from the play store that is not playing nice with kitkat, but due to the multitude of other issues, I'd say it is a kitkat or touchwiz flaw.
Thanks for any help.
Lago

I had an issue with screen not responding sometimes .....I figured out it was due to the flip case (original by Samsung). Although lately I haven't experienced that either.
Try using the original non flip case and see if you still have the issue.

I just cleared the cache, factory wiped, and installed the Russian update N900XXUDNC4 and so far, the phone is a lot smoother. No hangups in the browser yet, but time will tell lol.

Battery life is looking good. Power Saving off, bluetooth on and connected to my smart watch.
I made one short call. I don't talk on the phone that much. I mostly use it for Internet browsing, music, and instant messaging/texting. I'll update on Tuesday when I have a full day at school.
Keep in mind though that the n9005 is the lte version. I have a n900, the non lte international variant; our battery life may be different.
Edit: 4/20/2014 same charge 70% 1 day 6 hours bluetooth, wifi, gps, and 1 Gmail account in sync.
Sent from my SM-N900 using xda app-developers app
Even I experienced the same. My phone came with Kitkat installed. Freezing happens when a webpage is loading or the time i turn on Sync etc. strange thing is phone seems smooter when power save mode turned on.
I think it may be a problem that was not fixed until the March 31st 2014 KitKat build. I have been using Chrome heavily since I installed the most recent official rom; I have not experienced any lag or hanging system wide or in the browser. It reminds me of 4.3.
When I wiped and reinstalled the previous rom, I noticed the lag and unresponsiveness right away.
I'm going to use the browser heavily next week. If I have no issues, I think it may be safe to say that the bug was fixed in the latest kitkat with March 31st 2014 build date.
People with lag, do you have the lte variant or the regular SM-N900? I'm starting to think only the SM-N900 are being impacted by sour Sammy updates.
And if you guys wipe your phones, make sure to turn reactivation lock off because it could cause an error that will not recognize your real Sammy account and password. This phone has become stressful; I'm not updating it again lol
