Has anyone else noticed the in call volume being very loud even when on the lowest setting. Mine is super high, any suggestions to resolve?

Yes, I'm having the same problem. But it don't seems to be a problem every time. Neither seems it to be connected to specific callee's. Sometimes the volume is totaly normal, and sometimes it feels like speaker mode...
Mine is everytime though, it really is too loud even on the lowest setting.

You are lucky, actually. I have exactly opposite problem. My volume of calls is so low that I cant her the other callers. This is very serious issue for me and I am thinking about returning the phone. I am searching the net for some service codes that would allow me to raise the internal volume. Do you have 2.3.1?

[Q] volume & screen
After climbing (for me) a steep learning curve I am very happy with my NS. But as with anything, there are different levels of happiness. I still have two issues that sort of bug me.
1. Volume - It seems that I must accidentally hit it a lot, and at times find it turned all the way down.
2. Screen - It's amazing inside, but when I go outside in this Florida Sun (even in the winter) I not only can't read the screen, I can't find the buttons on the handset.
Any suggestions?
always good to see another florida person.
Can't say anything about the first since i don't own the device yet, a case may help though since my dad has a vibrant and he used to hit them, but after getting a silicone case he dosn't do it anymore.
As far as the seeing the screen goes, depending on your brightness setting the screen may be washed out. I normally keep my nexus one at about 40% brightness, but if i'm going to be outside for a day, or when i'm at the themeparks in orlando, i turn on the auto brightness, that usually brings it up to 100% in the sunlight which makes it readable.
Normally switching the brightness involves going through the settings, but there are many applications that give you a quick switch, i personally use the mysettings app that i have on my main screen so it's only two clicks to get to auto.
The screen is very viewable in the sunny Southern California sunlight, but no modern large screen smartphone like these are going to be great outdoors; at least the NS is usable (unlike the N1).
I concur with the other response that setting the screen brightness to max is obviously the best way to tackle this.
There's a very easy way, just install the Power Control Widget that comes pre-loaded on the phone. It gives you a bar with 5 icons on it for wifi, bluetooth, gps, google sync, and screen brightness.
The screen brightness icon lets you tap it for 4 different settings (minimum, about half max, maximum brightness and automatic). As mentioned above, with max brightness, the phone is very usable, for me in sunlight. At least as usable as my iPhone 4 and older iPhones.
Very handy, and also great for quickly turning off wifi and BT to save juice when not using them.

glad you like it, to switch to auto just long press on the brightness it'll switch to auto, and then long press again to go back to your previous setting.
Its pretty serious for me as well, its like being on speaker all the time. Its there any way to change the volume range? If not this will have to get exchanged.

I am also experiencing the oposite problem to this, my earpiece even at full volume is still very low. May try to pass by Best Buy and see if i can get test out another phone and see if mine is defective.
Yeah i'm suffering with the same problem. I've even swapped the phone but the new one has the same issue.
Has anyone found a fix for this? I really don't want to have to swap the phone again

I would like to have my screen brightness turned all the way down. This is my 2nd epic (1st one's menu soft key wasn't sensitive like the other soft keys) I go into the settings and set it that way as well as in the browser. I've tried having it setup with and without the power saving mode option selected, but no matter what, the screen brightness always changes to a higher setting on its own. I cycle through the power control widget and dim it back to 0 all the time but it doesn't remember the setting. I also notice that in some apps the brightness is raised i.e. market. What am I doing wrong? My bet is Samsung has an annoying glitch that they need to fix ASAP!

I noticed mine does that too. It will randomly be at a higher brightness setting. Also, the lowest brightness is WAY too bright! 0 on the epic is equivalent to 35 on the EVO.
Maybe when your pulling down the notification bar your sliding across on accident just enough to make it change brightness. Remember the brightness changes in your bar.....
i've got a vibrant but mine's doing same - hasn't done it that often, but does it
i found a small app for screen brightness control that displays the brightness percentage running as part of the icon, - just yesterday it had jumped from 11% to 52% on it's own
have no idea what gremlins are at work here

Coming from WM I was not aware of this gesture. I did notice sometimes when pulling the tray down it would do it. I need to read an android for dummies book and see if there's any other hidden jedi mind tricks that can be done.
I compared my brightness at 0 to an iphone4 all the way down, EVO, G1, Hero, BB Bold, and my former WM phones and the epic is way too bright at 0. I wish there was a way to keep the brightness set to the same setting when the screen dims in some apps, that would be ideal.
Good to see I'm not the only one with this issue and definitely getting a screen brightness icon in the notification panel will be very helpful to track samsung's shiesty shenanigans!
P.S.
The screen brightness increased on its own while typing this message from the xda app....

There's the power saving mode AND there's also the automatic brightness control. Two different settings. I turned both off and I haven't really seen the brightness change since.
Incidentally, disabling the automatic brightness control (in the brightness menu) has greatly improved my battery life.

Fixter, you beat me to it.... We need to find a way to get the phone to stay dim like when the XDA app is searching/refreshing. This would be ideal if that would be the baseline for 0% brightness. I hate how the Eclair browser's brightness 0% is one tick higher than using quick settings to turn the brightness down. Too bad I don't know how to develop, as this would be the first thing I would fix!

I installed a battery booster app from the market, and it had an option to dim the screen, it was on 11%, well i tried to adjust it, and i guess i went way to far and it turned my screen black, i cant see nothing.

Like i said it is BLANK. seriously blank. its not dim or nothing.
Is there a way to restore the brightness on here, because i cant see anything im doin on it.
what you can try to do is, grab a friends phone and try to immitate the same touches on both devices, the best way to do it is by unlocking it, pressing the menu key, click on the corner to make sure u go to the settings, scroll all the way up and find your way to "display" tipically the 4th (or 5th in my case because i have cyanogen mod) and brightness (should be the one at the top) and just try to drag ur finger from left to right to increse it (as it should over pass any 3rd party app) and see if it works, but..... keep in mind these things dependeding on what phone you use to guide you....
screen size
DPI scale
sense??? or not! as settings are different
and other things, also..... when you unlock it make sure its on the home screen
i also believe if you go outside you can see the screen a little bit under the sun, but not completely sure
hope this helps, oh and by the way, if you have a build based on sense go to a sprint store and use an EVO lol, or if u have stock froyo grab a nexus one from a friend and use that (but like i said before, keep in mund the screen size)
yea thats what i was tryin to do. no luck.
I had this problem twice and rejoice, I have a solution!
Simply download "DroidExplorer" for windows.
Boot your phone in android.
Once booted (when your screen turns black), plug in USB, and launch DroidExplorer.
In DroidExplorer, look for the "Screencast" icon (little android icon).
Run that, you will see your screen. Reset brightness to a normal level.
You are saved

When this happens, try shining a bright light on the screen, make sure the device is woken up (i.e. press a hard button) and view your screen from different angles. Even if the backlight is completely off, the LCD display is still active and the graphics elements just about visible.
With this method, you should be able to make enough of your screen to navigate to the brightness settings.
Screencast in Droid Explorer (for your PC) is also a good last measure.
Most apps that control brightness has this problem on HD2, so be careful about going too low in all of them. In Tasker, for example, 30 is the lowest setting that works.
Even the standard screen dimming that occurs a few seconds before screen timeout is not calibrated correctly. In all Android builds/kernels I have tried, the backlight is turned off when it should be just dimmed. Cyanogen(mod) has a setting for the dim level, but the maximum you can use is 26, which still turns off the backlight.
Curiously, sometimes (very seldom) after waking my phone up from standby, the backlight is in a much dimmer state than usual. When sliding the standard brightness from min to max, the actual brightness range varies from barely visible (but still on) to the regular dimmest level. So the device *can* support incredibly dim levels, but I've have found no way of getting into this state predictably. It has happened only 3-4 times over the past 2 months. A reboot fixes it, but I've also gotten out of this state after a locking/unlocking cycle.
So there seems to be several layers to the backlight brightness:
- the actual hardware (which supports much lower brightnesses than we're usually allowed access to)
- the Android API (which probably is the layer turning backlight off below 30, and which occasionally is fooled into using a much dimmer range than usual)
- whatever app providing the GUI (usually showing a range of 0-100% or 0-255).
Does anyone know if there's a reason for the threshold? Is it somehow risky for the LCD display hardware to be very dim?
I really like the auto brightness feature, but it's consistently too bright for my taste.
Is there a mod or tweak out there that will allow me to lower/adjust my automatic brightness levels to save some battery life?
(Currently running Blackhole 3.0 / DL09, will go to Blackhole 4.0 once it's out tomorrow)
anybody have any ideas
Unless you know how to modify the kernel source (which I believe is written in C, correct me if I'm wrong devs) or modify some file that is the delegate for the ambient light sensor, you're SOL buddy.
Its probably hardwired into the kernel, would be my guess.
Hmmm, I thought automatic meant automatic. My bad. J/K

Yes, automatically too bright in most situations. Yet not bright enough in sunlight.
I almost need to cover the light sensor some to fool it.
This is where Samsung fumbles. Their software is poor. Whomever is writing the code, set the light sensor to brightness conversion wrong. At least on DL30 they fixed one mess up. On the original rom, when you plugged in external power, the brightness would go to a fixxed level. If you were outside in a car and plug in power, it would dim the display. Indoors at night, plug in power, and it would BRIGHTEN the display. What's up with that.

What's the purpose of having a light sensor if it never works?
Often when I pop my phone open to do a specific task, '5 seconds' is about as long as it would have taken to do that whole task. And it's just annoying to unlock the screen, begin to attempt doing something, and then notice 'oh hey, the screen is basically unseeable!' and have to interrupt whatever you're doing. Or, even worse, when you're going from place to place and go through areas that are lighter and darker, forcing you to keep interrupting your work.

You guys nailed it. The screen is far brighter than I need while indoors at the office, but step outside and it just doesn't keep up with the bright Colorado sun (I can adjust it manually to a level that can be seen in sunlight just fine).
I could spend 5 secs adjusting the backlight each time the light environment changes, but why not spend 30 min optimizing the auto brightness levels and then never have to worry about it...
I know with my Moto Droid, someone had made a code that altered a particular file to change the lowest brightness level, but I have yet to see that for the Fascinate. It's a shame since the Fascinate's screen is so much nicer, but not set up optimally.
I know some dev's had also integrated the ability to change the auto brightness levels within custom ROMs for the Moto Droid. That'd be a great feature on the Fascinate!

That is to peoples own preference. I use auto most of the time and its fine. Doesn't work would indicate it doesn't change the brightness at all.
You can't expect it to auto sense it to every persons liking. Also does power control change it so you can see the screen, cause that doesn't take '5 seconds'

Try Screen Filter - its in the app store. With screen filter applied I keep my phone set to auto and screen filter reduces that more - in my case 50% more.
Well in the DL30 rom you don't have to go to the settings menu to change the brightness, just press and hold on the notification bar and then slide left and right to change the brightness.

As the title suggests, I am trying to figure out how to leave the screen on when being charged/plugged into charger. I often have music playing at my desk at work and prefer to skip some songs. Kind of sucks having to unlock the screen each time.
I think the media dock allows this since there is a setting in the dock section. I was surprised that it was not in the display or battery section.

There should be a developer menu setting to keep the screen on while charging. Keep looking.
If there isn't, or if you also want to specify the display brightness and timeout while charging and when on battery, you can use Tasker, or an app I wrote last year -- ChargeBright -- that ONLY does this.
If it's known for your phone model you want a 'whitelist' this has engineers/developers numbers and is probably under a setting especially for testing etc

It may not be exposed in the menu, but the system setting for it is still there.
I have my display (using my app) set to go to 100% brightness when plugged in, and to turn off after 2 minutes idle; when I unplug, it reverts to auto brightness and whatever the old timeout was (10 seconds iirc).
And, yeah, my Captivate's 22-month OLED has burn-in in the high-contrast top&bottom areas, but it's only noticeable when the screen is completely white.

Yeah I didn't think about the burn in issue. Guess I will learn to live with it. Thanks for the help all.
I got my S4 last week and it's great. This one doesn't have any lag, or at least not anything that concerns me. However, it does have screen issues, especially with the light adjustment. Sometimes the screen will randomly go full brightness for a second and then go back to normal, I notice this when accessing messaging sometimes. I know it also does this for Instagram, but it is suppose to do that.
Now, sometimes it seems like it does a colorshift. the screen will appear less blue and more yellow. It did this when I was accessing the facebook messenger app once and maybe another one. I might be making this up, but it just seems like the color changes ever so slightly. Also, once in a blue moon when it is adjusting screen brightness, all these vertical black lines appear for a microsecond on certain parts of the screen, it seems like an even distribution of lines. Reminds me of something old game boys might do.
I am very happy with the phone though, and I don't want to switch it if I don't have too. However, if another version might not have these issues, I want to switch ASAP, I only have a week left to swap for a new one. After that, my 14 days are up and they said they would only give me refurbs. :[
Do it.
I'm stuck with a defective screen 16GB because the 32GB did not come in on launch day which was my last day to return.
My only option at this point is to get another 16GB that's refurbished from warranty.
The irony in all this is that I manage the kiosk where I purchased the phone on my personal account.
My employees' phones and demo don't have the same screen issues I have.

The auto lighting adjustment sucks, times when it should be bright it's not. Plus the black line stuff that happens sometimes. If all of them experience this I dont want to trade in for another one. I don't want to risk trading my working phone for one that won't work so well.

I would swap it if I were you.. I came from the HTC one because of repeated problems and switched to the s4... I've only had it a few days now but have only experienced some lag (fixed by tweaking settings) and the auto brightness is a little slow to adjust sometimes (I've always though this about all my Samsung devices).. But no color changing or bars appearing.. Just my 2 cents..

that is partially due to the type of color meter and ambient light sensor type (should be a 40-something segment black and white unless my info on the sensor specs are off. i believe apple has designed a proprietary multisegment rgb meter for theirs). b/w meters get lumens correct, but not perceived brightness (human eye is not the same as a sensor).
the color changing issue you are having may be due to the display mode being set on auto (start, settings, display mode) and under lighting that the sensor cannot correctly meter for (fluorescent lights flicker at the same hertz as your AC current, and are actually pretty dim and WAY off for color balance, so that SHOULD throw the sensors off continuously, which would lead to auto brightness hunting and inaccurate selection of the 'correct' color mode).
try turning auto brightness off and color mode to professional photo or movie (i use move as its very flat and closer to real colors). there ought to be a way to trick the ambient brightness sensor to sample and average at a faster rate, and ramp up/down more smoothly, but i cant code for android otherwise i would have been working on one.
i work in tv/film industry on the sensor/lighting side btw. if the issue goes away, turn on auto brightness and check it out under NON FLUORESCENT lighting. if its gone, it was probably the display mode changing along with auto brightness.

try turning auto brightness off and color mode to professional photo or movie (i use move as its very flat and closer to real colors). there ought to be a way to trick the ambient brightness sensor to sample and average at a faster rate, and ramp up/down more smoothly, but i cant code for android otherwise i would have been working on one.
i work in tv/film industry on the sensor/lighting side btw. if the issue goes away, turn on auto brightness and check it out under NON FLUORESCENT lighting. if its gone, it was probably the display mode changing along with auto brightness.

I had no idea the S4 had these options. I guess I am used to my Atrix which didnt do much. I went in and adjusted the settings. The auto screen brightness never really did a good job, I feel that it is way too dim in situations where it should be brighter. I will text your advice the next week and see what happens. If I still get issues, I will return it as I have one week left of my 14 days. Thank you very much for the excellent advice!

no problem; the auto brightness on the GS4 is only slightly better than the Atrix 4G (had one too), and same as the GS3. The color mode thing (which is awesome; closer to real life colors versus waaaay oversaturated screens on most phones. also check power saving settings.

Well, I have not seen those black lines since I turned off auto brightness and turned off the screen automatically doing it's own color adjustments. I will turn these back on to see if I can duplicate the issue. I do feel that I have more lag now, but I could just be paranoid.
OK, when I am using my Facebook Messenger App, sometimes these black lines appear horizontally across the screen on low brightness. However, sometimes they dont. I dont want to call them black lines, but maybe I should say they are ghostly tv lines that are barely noticeable. Ideas?
Could someone explain the defective screen issue?, mine looks great...
The phone works great most of the time and is totally useable, the only issue is that sometimes it does these weird things as I have explained. Tomorrow is the 14 day mark, so I am having a hard time deciding if I should switch for another one just in case, or assume all of this is normal and hope the phone lasts me 2 years.

Could possibly be a GPU issue. Have you had any problems playing heavy duty 3d games?
Sent from my GT-N7100
No problems playing the Iron Man 3 game, everything seems fine.
It seems like any time the keyboard is pulled up, the screen shifts color to something more yellow. all of the keys go from a nice grey to a off grey yellow tint color. During this transition, I can literally see the screen transition as weird lines appear for a fraction of a second, like switching channels on an old TV. I tried recording this on my DSLR 1080P camera but it could not pick up the color change visibly. I might try again. It does this on Google Chrome, Facebook Messenger, Snap Chat even. sometimes it color shifts even when the keyboard is not involved. I have the auto adjustments on the screen off and the color set to Standard Mode.
The ATT store said I am a day out of my 14 day limit and there is nothing they can do. They said I have to talk to warranty and see if they will be nice enough to send me a new one. I dont want a refurb, last time that happened, I went through 4 of them. I talked to ATT support and they said they would extend my 14 days another 3 days but the ATT store said I was out of luck for an exchange for a new phone.
So no one elses screen color shifts to yellow when the keyboard pops up? Mine does this now all the time, mainly in low light. It might do it in all light situations but in sunlight I prolly just can't see it. It's incredibly annoying because the screen itself wacks out every time it does it.
