Here is what I found for rooting, feedback please. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I found this as the first step: http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-temporarily-root-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/
then this right after: http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/ho...s-off-on-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/
I would like to know how this compares to gankin's guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
These vids I found seem like a really simple and effective way to root, but thought I would ask here since every site I google searched for info on rooting seems to bring me to this site.
Thanks.

please post questions in the Q&A section
the first video is temp rooting... the second one i believe is based off of grankin's first rooting method guide. I would go with the ultimate s=off because it gives you s=off on the radio and bootloader. it essentially SIM unlocks your phone and replaces the bootloader with an engineering bootloader.

Please post questions in Q&A section.

Sorry about that.

First, you want to post questions in the Q&A section. Second, look here.
A simple search will save you from getting flamed in these forums. The thread I linked was listed at the very top of the development section.

th many other threads
thank you.
i have read that along with many other threads.
problem is, being new, i am yet to understand what the program "visionary" is or where to get the right version
other terms like like radio=off are new to me.
i'm not slow but some of these guides are written with an audience already familiar with rooting in mind.
for someone using their first android phone and trying to root it, a little help is needed so i dont turn my new phone that cost me 2 years of wireless liberty in a paperwheight

Well, try this thread, and if you don't understand that, you probably should not mess with your phone. I'm totally not being mean here. But if you don't understand the previous helper's link or the one I'm sending you, you could easily brick your phone and be totally screwed. The guides posted that we linked to are pretty straightforward.
But, to answer one of your questions, VISIONary is an Android app listed in the Android Market that some of the XDA Developer GENIUSES wrote. It's basically the first step in permanently rooting your phone. It can run a discovered exploit in this group of devices and gain 'temporary root'. Which basically means that if you rebooted your phone after gaining temp root, the root would we removed from memory. But, by gaining temp root, you can run superuser level commands which will provide the full root (which doesn't disappear after reboots). This used to have to be entered manually, but again, the geniuses who wrote VISIONary folded this functionality into the app.
BTW, u asked about S=OFF. In the Hboot section of your phone (when you hold the VOLUME DOWN button and POWER button together from a shut off phone), it displays certain firmware information about your phone. 'S' refers to Security (I think), and the '=OFF', is, well, off. So it's supposed to mean the Security's turned off on your phone.
See, I have read about VISIONary and know what it does. Problem is I cant find it in the market place. Rrquested a download link and used QR, neither worked. I dont care about anyone being mean over the net as far as I get the help I need like you gave. I'm new to android and not stupid so I think I can handle rooting a phone.
I intend to keep reading to learn bit I still ne er d help with things like absence of visionary from the marketplace.
Btw is there an alternative for VISION ary?

Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Well I care about the meanness, because I need to ask questions from time to time, and I DO search and read threads, so I know how it feels when someone gets uppity about your question.
Anyway, I think I was wrong about it being in the Market. It is posted as a thread in this sub-forum, or as link somewhere, but anyway, you have to download it from here. Best of luck!
Oh, and I'm not sure about alternatives to VISIONary, but I think the only alternative to it would be the original HTC G2 exploit, and whatever command-line stuff that entails. Dunno if that stuff was even posted online; it probably exists with the developer(s) who originally found the exploit.
Please post questions in the Q&A section.

Before asking how to root check this out

Been seeing alot of "how to root" or "I think i'm rooted" and even people posting that they have tried a method and it hasn't worked or stuck at a certain point in the root method they are using. so maybe this can get stickied to the Q&A.
If you want a sure fire way to root goto this link and follow the Instructions TO A TEE (aka to the letter, as it says, word for word) and I promise you you will get root.
If you have problems with it post in the thread and everyone will be happy to help... and just by Pure chance people won't help (which I doubt) add me on Gtalk @ Triketra1983 or send me a PM on here and I will happily help you get setup to get it done!
Yes it looks scary, and yes it can brick your phone, but if you do it EXACTLY like the method explains it will WORK!

Thanks for your reply. I think I have visited that page, among many others.
I was kinda hoping for a pointer to a single simple topic entitled something like "[HOWTO] Flash a Legend rom from a zip" but am coming to the conclusion there is no such thing.
Guess life is not that straightforward in Legend Land, so I must keep trawling the many threads and try to piece together what goes on.
Dave
If u haven't rooted legend u can install this zip file... first root your phone. Good luck
Sent from my HTC Legend
I was also confused on my first strike to root my legend.
I fund another very good rooting thread here. Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894465 and follow it step by step.
It wasn't very complicated, but you need to read and follow this thread carefully.

[Q] Installing a custom ROM

Hey MyTouch 4g users, I'm quite new to this and I've read the tutorial threads about rooting and etc. But I'm still confused. I'm trying to flash a custom ROM for MyTouch 4g T Mobile version. Do I need to have ADB Fastboot installed before I can root my device? I plan on following the True PermaRoot method. I dont want to miss anything. If anybody can simply point out what I need to do in a simple order that'll be very helpful. Thank you in advance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
EVERYTHING is here. You just have to read. And if it's not clear enough - perhaps you should reconsider rooting until it is.
Welcome to the forum. Don't mind some of the cranky people, they haven't gotten laid in months. Yes you should have ADB set up, there is a great guide for it in the development section. It will make your life much easier. Once that is complete just follow the instructions to the "T" for the rooting method and you will be good to go. It is actually very simple.

You just made my day low hahahaha
As for rooting (not just gunna make a useless post) if your going to use the gfree method honestly you do not need anything besides your phone visionary a terminal emulator and some bandwidth to work with. In my mind that is by FAR the easiest.

you mean this page :
404 Page Not Found
The page you requested was not found.
There is no n00b easy way of rooting 2.3.3
in order to do so you have to:
flash back to 2.3.2
gingerbreak 2.3.2
then update to 2.3.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176367 is the correct link.
It says all over that thread that you do NOT need to unlock the bootloader.
This method?
