Hi,
If you own a Nexus S, please tell us about your phone.
How many times you have exchanged your phone until you got a perfect one?
If you exchanged it, tell us why? What kind of problem did you get?
If you were asked, "In terms of build quality, what is the worst part?"
With this poll, we could get a rough picture about how well the manufacture / production of Nexus S, Samsung QA, those kind of things.
Thanks.
First in line, first Nexus s, perfect phone, no issues.

Same here. The only "problem" with my NS is the home button backlight is not as bright as the others.
First Nexus S, no issues whatsoever. I was very surprised since I went through three G2s(okay hinge, worst hinge, meh hinge) and three MT4Gs(bad screen, no update/bad reception, bad screen) that I ultimately ended ditching for this phone.
If asked what's the worst part of the build quality, I'd say the lack of texture coating to help the phone from feeling so slick.

I too noticed that with my home button.
I've had the NS for 4 days and my battery life doesn't feel like its getting any better but I have used the phone constantly. I get about 5-7 hours usage before charge required again. That's around 15-30 percent.

Mine works okay except cellular radio problem, but hopefully it'll be fixed through future radio ROM update.

First phone and no issues.
Much improved over Vibrant. So that is gingerbread over TMo 2.1. Also better than my MT4G, it seems to find its ffc. But rooted/OCLF Vibrant blows over 2k on Quadrant and both HTC phones are up 6db on WiFi sensitivity from both Samsung phones. OTA on SNS seems very good though. Already got first OTA update on SNS!! No TMo klepto wear dragging me down. Wow, Skype, Fring Tango seem to work. Now need to root and get edge and a prepaid SIM card. Only Navigon won't load on SNS but does on all others Inc. SG Tab.

First phone here also, not seeing any of the problems mentioned in this forum. Bought in UK.
Very nice phone and certainly the best android phone I've used out of desire, desire HD, galaxy s. Very. Impressed with battery, crucifies all previously mentioned in this department.
Second phone. Had to replace first one due to back button being unsensitive like other buttons. Also noticed gsensor is quite jumpy in readings. Trying to understand if this is also hardware error.

GPS reception is horrible on this device however. I can be driving and it randomly loses signal.

I think most or all of the U.S. SGS variants had really bad GPS on a lot of phones. I know I came to the Nexus S from Vibrant and it is insane how much better it is.

The cellular radio freezes when being under no signal condition (subway in underground) for more than about 10 minutes. That the phone is no longer to get signal even the train goes to surface or I get off the station.
I have to power cycle the phone in order to make cellular radio works again.
Wifi and BT aren't affected.

I really like the hardware of the SGS, but man.. I've never used a phone so buggy.
1) GPS Problems
2) Lag problems
3) Freezes anytime signal is weak
4) Freezes when it feels like.
5) Four times I've lost all my data thanks to pulling the battery during a freeze
6) Build quality problems (as detailed from Paul @ Modaco)
It freezes for me fairly regularly. This is my second SGS. My first SGS froze constantly so I exchanged that, my new one only freezes a couple times a week. Today it froze and as usual I did the hold power button till it reboots...and it locks on reboot. Data corruption. yay. Fourth. ****ing. time.
I've had this phone 2 weeks and this is the 4th time I've had to start from scratch due to data corruption.
I'm going to flash a newer firmware on this and sell it. I love Android, but this phone is a ridiculous amount of grief.
I guess I'm just lucky, but I've had none of these problems other than the GPS which isn't very accurate.
Changing the software settings for this makes it usable, though not yet perfect.
I've yet to experience any lag and I've not experienced a lock up.
I've had none of theses issues either, aside from the GPS. My GPS works ok if im stopped but doesnt track so well if im moving.
Love mine. I have captivate. Honestly never seen the first hint of lag and the GPS will soon be fixed. I can say that I am pretty happy with it all and all.

You sure we bought the same phone?
My GPS locks on after ~20 seconds and then there is no problems after that. I have not experienced one freeze (including this 'Freezes when signal is weak' -- which I think is absolute bull since my girlfriend's room is in the basement and I do not get a signal down there yet my phone performs perfectly fine), build quality is fine -- it's more durable than you think, and I haven't really experienced any lag.
Are you actually using the phone or are you just going by what forums/people say?

no offense, but it all has to do with standards a person is used to.
if you're coming from windows mobile, the lags you experience when using SGS are okay
if you're coming from iphone, SGS lags like a *****. Aside from the open OS/closed OS debate, the fluidity and smoothness of iphone 3gs UI and the instant response you get when you click on an icon/app puts the SGS to shame. sometimes i had to wait for 5 seconds to get a response after i clicked an icon. this never happened with the 3GS no matter how big the app is
I had a 3GS, sold it and bought an SGS, and i know how both telephones handle
Edit: the above post refers to bell I9000, i have the regular I9000. I dont know if there is ahardware difference or samsung has rectified what they did wrong in the regular I900
What build quality issues? The other issues have been well documented and are fixable with some reasonable effort. The GPS fix is just around the corner.
I understand *****ing about other stuff but build quality? Its great imo. Just because the phone has a plastic back cover doesn't mean the quality is bad.

You don't specify anything; you just said 'I don't know how you guys gloss over this phone's dealbreaking flaws' referring to EVERY Galaxy S. I don't have any problems, just because you do doesn't mean everyone has the exact same problems and bought the exact same version as yours.

I have the phone. I've had it since August 5th. I'm glad you project your experience onto mine implying that mine do not exist. You do not have my phone. Until you do, you are a complete ass to assume I'm making these things up.
I was in Canadian Tire the other day and checked my phone--signal between 0 and 1 bar. Within 5 minutes, it locked up. When I visit my mom, her basement has poor reception. My phone locks up routinely down there. I don't care if you haven't experienced it, many of us have.
I personally have not YET had the build quality issues, which is why I said as detailed by Paul at MCR. It's like any phone with poor build quality though... chances are it will affect most of us.

Such as? I was running CFLagFix; when I tried to uninstall it to update to a new version it corrupted my phone. That was one of my wipes. It didn't really help the performance anyway TBH.
Yes I don't see any lag. I mean none. And I don't use a task killer and don't news to. I get paerfect signal at my apt at school: no freeze. I get no signal at my parents house at all:no freeze. I cluck on a icon: it opens the second I click it. I'm not big on toychwiz: Launcher Pro. Its a great phone. Love it. I have the Droid x also and still don't think that the x is even comparable. My two cents.

Dropped my phone plenty of times and have not experienced any set backs because of it. Dropped it on it's screen, side, etc; it's a sturdy phone. Just because it has the look and kind of feel of a cheap quality doesn't always mean it is.
I don't think anyone is glossing over anything. Half the posts on this forum are about lag and gps problems.
Thing is that you can fix both problems with easy one click things, and keeping on top of your firmware.
If you are getting lag to such extremes, and on two devices, its because your clogging up the memory with too much stuff running together.
You'll have some culture shock because up until recently iOs only runs one thing at a time, and hitting home closed things. Not so for android, and particularly things like browser windows and certain widgets can just eat your ram and cause the slow down. If its happening ' when it feels like it' then that's probably your culpret.
The sgs is not without its flaws but that's no excuse to treat her bad.

Then honestly, the only explanation is that Samsung has released I9000s with different hardware versions to rectify hardware problems
This is the only reason i see to explain people not having lag problems and apps opening the second you click them. I must be one of the unlucky guys with an early hardware version

It's true; there are different versions but they are vastly different in some cases (some have hard-keyboards while others are just a case difference).
Does it affect the hardware? Maybe in some cases but there are probably other details on the web somewhere.
EDIT:

Pretty much everything is great for me. TW took a little time to get used to but it's been a solid experience
had this phone for a few weeks now and after my much loved hero, this is in a different league! if you dont have it, do sumthin to get it, you will not be dissappointed
Im loving my phone. Feels great in the hand. Doesnt feel too light! The screen is the finest screen ive seen on any smartphone. The blacks are just that. Ive not noticed any wifi strength issues at all. Call quality is very clear. Voice commands work impressively well. No reception issues.
I can also confirm that i am getting approximately 32 hours of normal everyday use out of one charge. Which i believe to be very impressive.
Luckily i can say ive not had a single issue that others have reported.
Best phone I've ever owned (came from G1 to Desire to this)
Thanks for the effort peeps interesting to see a couple of names from bug threads still rate the phone. Its a shame about how few came on tho, leads me to think that either
a) the phone sucks, don't believe that personally. Iv had a couple of sessions on it now in phones4u and cpw n love it.
b) people prefer to be negative than positive, this I can believe.
c) most have been happy enough with it to not bother coming to this forum
d) people don't want to comment knowing some **** will either bash them about being a noob or use the new favorite and call them a troll

I'll keep it short. I love this phone, its awesome. Its not perfect (a perfect phone will probably never exist) but I'm happier with this than I was with my SG1. I may even go as far to say that I'm more excited with this phone than I was when I got my first Nexus One. (the N1 was a huge upgrade for me, and my first real switch to android)
I don't have any serious problems, and haven't been disapointed in any way. My GF has a brand new HTC Inspire, and I would love to throw that away and get her one of these.
My setup is in my sig.
HTC sensation will be released soon and I know some of you are planning to jump ship. What you probably haven't heard about is the dreaded death grip issue it suffers from. Yes, the same issue the iphone 4 experienced but this time it also affects the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity of the Sensation.
gsmarena did an article about it complete with video.

It's even worse on the sensation.
HTC quality control recently has just been crap overall. Dust issues, touchscreen issues, bad eMMC chips on the Mytouch 4g and G2, etc. Makes me happy that Samsung's hardware is still relatively bug free,
My vibrant, heck, any phone with an internal antenna for that matter, does the same thing. Try it yourself. Hold the phone as you usually would in a place that would give you, say, 2 bars. Then turn the phone upside down. You will see an increase of, at a minimum, 1-2 bars.
I've done this with various kernels on CM7. The its amazing. Sometimes I go from 0 bars to 3 or 4.
Lastly, my son has an htc sensation and so far its a love fest.

Yes, except software is mostly fixable with custom roms. With HTC, you will have a crapload of unfixable hardware issues. The newest KB5 official update on the Vibrant has already improved much of responsiveness of the device. I am sure that even if you get the Sensation, you will be flashing a ton anyways since Sense 3.0 is said to be less responsive than a stock Desire HD.

I gotta agree XPLANE9. I was 100% in the camp for an HTC Sensation. My Vibrant GPS got borked a month or two back because of BiWinning V2, after Odin to Stock failed to fix it and after screwing around with CM7 for a month, I got tired of it and went back to the Vibrant and somehow my GPS fixed itself after a 2nd Odin to stock after CM7.
I have the hardware GPS fix for great reception now, a front facing camera that works quite well, and a perfect form factor. I even walked into Wal-Mart and asked if they had a Sensation in stock for me to purchase. I almost got it, but thought to myself: There's just not enough that the Sensation offers that makes it worth it. With the hardware GPS fix I've done, and the FFC I added, the Vibrant hardware has everything I need. The screen on the Sensation is a step down, the extra screen space is nice, but I really do like the 4" my Vibrant gives me every night (oyeah). It's not an HSPA+ device - just another 14.4 device. And the dual-core still chokes on Sense 3.0, so that'll inevitably need tweaking assuming the hardware doesn't come up with any more defects.
I'll wait for the Hercules.
I think in the end, it's all user preference.
I too have the vibrant but will be getting the sensation tomorrow.
There will never be a perfect phone. We have to remember we all were disappointed with the gps issue but worked around it.
If you end up with a bad phone, we have the option to return it for a refund.

I was on the "100% Sensation" bandwagon for a while, but I though
"Why get the Sensation when Samsung said they'd step up their update process (which the phone I'm getting, the SGS2 unbranded, will be getting updates), their hardware is superior (and you rarely get a bad phone), and HTC hasn't posted IF they'll unlock the bootloader on the Sensation, while the SGS2 ships with an unlocked bootloader."
So now, I'm getting the SGS2, and I can't wait to get it.
Hello all,
I got my Galaxy Nexus on day of release, so had it some 6 months or so, the other day I bought a Galaxy S III, the following day sold my Galaxy Nexus for 320€ (loss of 300€ in 6 months, can live with that).
Now, I must say while I loved the GN display I was one of those who suffered from the squares when on low brightness. That was my biggest gripe with the GN... Battery life was 2 days on one charge.. stock Android, loved it.
So on to the S3, performance? wow, very nice, in general pretty smooth. Could I tell a massive noticeable improvement over the GN? Not really.
Sound, MUCH MUCH MUCH better on the S3 ...
Build quality seems a tiny bit less than the GN.
I certainly do not like the physical home button on the S3.
Camera and video, on S3 very pleased indeed.
One very annoying bug is that for some reason I've got no DTFM tones in a call... which is a #taxibookingfail for me Had to grab the misses iPhone 4S to ring the damn taxi company in the end. #eggonface
The Samsung widgets etc I think are average. HTC do much nicer ones thats for sure.
I do miss the GN a lot, and stock Android is wonderful.
As I've been using fastboot to install new release ROM's on the GN, find it a pain to flash the S3. I'm on Mac and I wanted to flash the latest EU ROM in the hope it would fix the DTFM issue, but I just can't seem to get it done. Yeah I've grabbed Heimdall, extracted the ROM, blah blah, even looked at CLI flashing, but it's not working. I guess there is no fastboot for the S3. If anyone knows better please do say. Also are there OTA packages for the S3 that can be downloaded and patched via recovery?
Anyway.. all the best guys
Thank you sir. You just persuaded me to get a gnex. From the google play store, they are only $400 us. It will be a big upgrade from my samsung captivate (carrier branded galaxy s1)

So I myself am also making the transition from the gnex to the gs3 and my biggest gripe is the battery on the gnex. In your opinion how much better battery life did you get from the gs3 then you did from the gnex?
I would recommend Mobile ODIN to solve your flashing problem. It lets you download things right to your phone, and it will auto reboot and flash them for you. I grabbed the pro version for 4USD because it auto-downloads any fixes you need.
As far as the Gnex, I am surprised you are not happier moving to your GS3. I had a grey Gnex for about 4 months, and the screen quality, camera, and speaker volume were terrible. I was worried it would be similar on this phone, but all three of those areas seem vastly improved to me.
Galaxy nexus is the best device compared to s3 due to the price, stock ics and on screen navigation
Price is the biggest one for me
I bought galaxy nexus for 27000
S3 price abt 39000
Samsung touch wiz and s voice is a crap.
Except microsd I am happy with the purchase of gnex....

Don't do it. The screen drains the battery on the GN like there's no tomorrow! Unless you turn the brightness way down...then you can't enjoy the HD screen which defeats the purpose. Also the screen is kind of washed out looking, with everything looking yellowish especially at lower brightness. Also the external speaker on the GN is really low and probably one of the worst I've ever heard on a phone. There's a couple more things but these are my main gripes with the phone. The Screen and speaker are 2 very important features that have to work right on my phone. So I'm selling my basically new GN and getting the GS3 on the 21st.

Approximately twice the screen on time in my case, from 3 to almost 6 hours screen in time.
Idle consumption is worse on sgs3 due to possible bug but screen on time is what matters the most.
Overall performance is much better, but battery life was the top reason for me to move to sgs3 from gnex.

Yes the battery life on the GSM sucks monkey balls.
I loved my gnex but it had a few small issues. Wifi has short range, the speaker volume was low and the screens colors were more washed out. Overall the Gnex is still solid and one of the best phones I've had. Got love for gnex.

I'll be getting rid of my g nexus here as well. I get about 4 hours maybe 4.5 of constant screen time. Standby is really good with franco and aokp but those roms and cm well likely be on the s3 regardless so not much reason to stick with the nexus at this point.
I'm just waiting for the second batch. They are likely running full tilt and the manufacturing will tighten up quality wise on the second + runs.

The fact that you got 3 hours of screen on time amazes me to be honest. I struggle to even get an hour and half and on days that im lucky i get 2. The fact that this thing can get 6 hours screen time wil be heaven to me

Regarding battery life of the GN ... about a month ago I changed network. That made a phenomenal difference in battery life too .... for the better.

What in the world are you people talking about? I get 4 hours screen on time spread out over 40 hours off charger on my gsm gnex. Data on and syncing entire time, 30% brightness.

Okay guys here is my problem. I got a Play Gnex GSM last month. I have the car dock and pogo landscape dock. The Nexus is my first Android phone. I don't run custom roms and have little interest in modding the device. It is rooted. I play videos and mostly spotify. I was very pissed about the sound volume but have figured that out with Volume+ and finally got the settings I like. As of right now I have no complaints with the phone and love it. I also have the 3800mah and three regular batteries (one original and two qcell non-nfc) so battery issues are not a problem for me. I've never been a hard core gamer on the phone so FPS isn't a concern either. That could change if I got hooked I guess. Also the pogo dock is great. I dock the Nexus and use it as a clock at night. I could do the same with the GS3 but would have to plug a cord in all the time.
To be honest my original intention was to purchase the Nexus then after the GS3 was released give the Nexus to my wife and purchase the GS3. My wife has been using my old iPhone 3g for two years and it's on it's last legs. Not to mention it's jailbroken and Ultrasn0wed for the unlock. It's on 4.01. I'm having second thoughts now. I love the Nexus. On the other hand the GS3 I know is going to be super incredible plus the microsd storage would hold everything I could possibly throw at it. I'm also expecting improved audio from the GS3 as well. I'm okay with the Nexus audio but it doesn't even touch the quality from my two year old iPhone 4.
Should I pass the Nexus on to the wife and get a GS3 or should I wait until the next Google phone comes out and hope it has great specs and pass the Nexus along then? Money isn't that much of a issue at the moment. I already have a 64gb card and plan on selling my iPhone 4 when it's unlocked (as soon as I get the unlock e-mail confirmation from Apple and do a restore, ATT already approved the unlock yesterday). I would be getting the ATT LTE version.
Another option is to use the Nexus and not sell the iPhone but let her use it until the next Google phone comes out then do the rotation.
For those of you that have "upgraded" to the GS3 from the Nexus how many of you would do it again?

Anything i should know before i buy this phone?
Like any cons/problems?
How's the battery life?
Depends how picky you are. Some people are finding problem everywhere and returning their phones for the smallest reason.
If you check the forum will will find lots of this.
Battery life ...... I had shockingly bad screen on time on the standard kernel so I flashed franco kernel and it seems a little better.
If i didnt leave 3g turned on and didnt actually do anything on the phone i could get 2 days between charges, but if used 3g the battery would go down 10% in 10 mins. But with a different kernel im getting a lot better screen on time.
As for the software its vanilla android and its virtually perfect for me and the phone is blistering fast it does everything i want very fast, also a lot of people where i live dont know what it is especially people with iphones and they are a litttle jealous when they see how fast it is.
A minus though is the phone can get very hot, I men where i live it gets down to -40 and i can use it as a hand warmer I dont know if this is heat dissipation working correctly or some other problem
Im hoping the battery and heating issues can be solved with an update which im sure they will be.
For me buy it its individual i havent seen one anywhere apart from in my pocket any problems and you can just take it straight back )))
Battery life has been fine for me, even on stock kernel (though I'm running a custom one now). As for cons, some people have problems with the phone being a little more fragile, as both front and back are made of glass. YMMV depending on how careful you are / how willing you are to put a case on it.
As far as the heating issue goes, if you flash a custom kernel and UV a bit you should be fine. Also depends on what you use your phone for. 3D gaming will obviously get you higher temps.
OP - you might get some more informative answers if you mention what phone you're coming from and what you're used to or expecting.
Battery life is about the same as any other phone in this category of the Nexus 4's specs.
The heat it gives off I would consider the same as my Galaxy S3.
Only thing that I would tell you is to have a case for it, it has glass on both sides ..I would recommend the Diztronic TPU case.

im running franco kernel with it underclocked and i still get the heat issue. I dont use it for games i have a n7 for that. only normal phone use and stuff like social networks and looking at the browser when on the bus, or when im using 3g when using for example facebook (which i dont think is too demanding on the cpu) it gets damn HOT at the back like i said even when its -40 well maybe -20 on the bus which tbh is very bad becasue then it will condense inside causing water damage.
Im gonna wait till the next update and see if that cures it if not ill have to speak to google i think when im in the uk next month. Im not the kind of person who RMA`s for small things but my battery really is shockingly bad.
But i do agree that this kind of high level hardware is going to hammer batteries it has 4 x the power of my old xperia arc......

Out of curiosity, have you checked the binning of your processor (fast, nominal, slow)?

I've had my nexus 4 since dec 13 it's the first batch.. The only problem I've encountered is back where the camera is It's got a little rattling noise .. Other than that I'm quite happy with my purchase:good:
Got my phone on day one. The issue I have had with the phone is it came with these forums. Best phone I have ever owned other then that. Lol
This phone is absolutely brilliant. I would put it at a 9/10, losing 1 point for the camera.
It's cooler than the SGS3 temperature wise, it's well built, it's super fast and has great battery life. Volumes are loud, earpiece speaker is clear and as loud as a jet engine, the screen is absolutely gorgeous.
On AOKP milestone build 1, with franko kernel, I get around 20 hours standby, and 4.5 hours screen on time with moderate use. Thats with some form of data on permanently apart from at night (standby time includes sleep at night lol)
Once google release good camera software, nexus will take over. Camera is a 6/10 for me.

I don´t think/feel so. But the other points 100% agree.
I'm coming from the HTC Amaze, that has an amazing battery but I'm leaving that phone because of the battery and the reboot problem.
and can you guys give me a little more information on the camera? Like pictures you guys took, and I heard the battery can compete with the Samsung galaxy 2

Some people in this thread have been discussing camera issues. There are also a bunch of pictures taken by the N4 there. The gist of it is that low light performance may not be up to everyone's standards, but (again) it depends on how picky you are about these things. If it bothers you, you may be able to work around it by using a third-party camera app - there's some debate about whether the problem is hardware- or software-related.
My personal impression is that the camera is good enough for my uses, but then again I'm not a photography buff, so take that opinion with a grain of salt
I could easily recommend this phone to anyone. The battery is what it is, I get 3-4 hours of screen on time. I do have a charger at work and home and in the car, so it's a non-issue for me. The screen is beautiful. The phone is insanely fast. The heat issues I think are non-issues, the back is glass which is a much better conductor, so all that really means is the glass back heats up to cool off the processor, plastic backed phones don't have a huge thermal plate to dissipate heat. I'd call the phone a 9.5/10 especially if you can get it straight from Google for their price. (good luck)
The biggest issue this phone has is that no one can get their hands on one.
