[Q] google calendar sync ? - Android Software Development

I'll be writing my own calendar/organizer app soon and I'm trying to figure out some things first...
First I was planning to store users' calendar data on my own server for syncing, but later I figured that most people already use google calendar, so why would they need to switch if they want their calendar synchronized (plus it would save me a LOT of work on creating my own interface) ?
So what I need to know is: is it OK for me to write an app that uses the google cal ? If yes, how do I write stuff in it and how do I get it from their server ?

So, anyone ?

Just use the calendars on your phone and let the Android OS sync them for you. Why do it yourself.

[Me Begging] Windows Live Calendar Sync

Well now that there are all the various ways to sync Google Calendar with windows mobile devices, I'm convinced there must be a way to do the same with Windows Live Calendar (plus I think they both use the .ics format) Anybody who's familiar with this type of app, can you give us some direction?
Thanks!
MJB
You need to add one more option to the poll:
"No, but I would if it could sync OTA with my WinMo phone!"
B/c that is where I am at right now. Until it can OTA sync with my phone, I need to stick with Exchange for my calendar.
Ideally, WM6.1 would add support for multiple calendars and WL Calendar would add OTA sync. Syncing both a Work and Personal calendar OTA would be the hotness.
I feel you...I was implying that this solution would sync over the air. I seriously have never synced with my desktop. I use hotmail, so windows live (in its current state) can handle email and contacts over the air just fine. Now if only we could get the calendar functionality going! Thanks for the reply and hopefully this will continue to pique the interest of other readers.

I feel like I could also live with some desktop app that can sync my windows live calendar with an exchange account, then access it through direct push. I've read about a product called Calgoo http://www.calgoo.com that apparently can sync Google Calendar with an exchange server...does this sound like a possibility?
MJB
Bump? Anyone? Bueller?
This is a frustration of mine as well...one of the key components to the "Outlook" suite is calendaring, and that is the one component they have purposely left out so far. From what I have read about Microsoft's new Sync framework, I suspect that it has something to do with the launch of that new product and the impact it will have on the direction of Microsoft's mobile/disconnected computing offerings...
That said, it still doesn't address my needs today...the answer to mbial's question at the start is simply no...This has frustrated me to the point where I was going to write an application to handle this, however I ran into a wall when I discovered that the Windows Live API explicitly excludes a WL Calendar interface. So for now I am resorting to painful manual .ics exports and syncing with Outlook...no OTA yet...
MoonMan,
Despite the Windows Live API excluding a calendar interface, I don't believe all of the gCal syncing solutions explicitly rely on Google APIs. Take a look at solutions like these:
http://oggsync.com/index.php/windows-mobile-documentation/detailed-feature-chart/
or
http://www.goosync.com/
which permit full two-way syncing with no middle-man server. GCal and Windows Live Calendars aren't all that different in features or functionality, so I have to believe that this is a possibility. Keep the ideas flowing!
Best,
MJB
Here are 3 examples of open-source gCal sync solutions...anyone want to take a look at the code and see if we can repurpose these apps for Windows Live Calendar?

Thanks as always,
MJB
One more thing...
After scouring MSDN and dev.live.com I have learned that the Live Calendar APIs are not, in fact, available yet. This is surprising considering one of the developers stated that the API was coming soon way back in April of 07. Sucks.
MJB
Are there some new information? (Sync Windows Live Calendar would be a great feature.. if we cant sync, i dont know for what the calendar should be.)
greets blackx
Can I ask why you haven't tried using Outlook 07 for hotmail :S maybe that might solve your problems and let you sync the calendar. Don't flame me if I missed something or this is a stupid suggestion because I didn't totally comprehend the situation D:

I have Outlook 2003, but i dont use it.
I like to be portable (i use the http webinterface..) so i can check emails all over the world.. my calendar would be available for my messenger contacts, and i dont have to install/use more software then i really need.
(sorry, but i dont like to use outlook, its a nice program but i think web-based application would be the future..)

The goal here is to sync over the air, not using a desktop. There has been some progress made though, as Windows Live Wave 3 is being rolled out and it's possible the Calendar APIs are now available. Also, I've been in contact with Thomas Wetzel of SynchPST. He is going to try and make the next version of SynchPST compatible with Microsoft Office Outlook Connecter, which would allow those of us with exchange accounts to use desktop outlook/exchange to have proper push of our Windows Live services (although this would require you leave outlook running on a computer at all times, it would be a big step in the right direction.) Take a look at our conversation:
Original Email:
I recently stumbled upon your product SynchPST because I am looking for a way to synchronize my Windows Live Hotmail account with my hosted exchange account. Presently your tool is able to read and sync the data file for my exchange account, however, it is unable to read the data file for Office Outlook Connecter (which is how I retrieve my hotmail into my outlook.) Is there any possibility of adding this functionality to SynchPST so it can read/sync data stores generated by the Outlook Connector? This would be HUGE for many people and I would be happy to pay a premium over your standard and professional products for this feature. Thanks in advance and I hope to hear a response from you soon.
Response:
Thank you for your reply.
I downloaded Outlook Connector and could reproduce this behavior. I will try to implement the synchronization of a Windows Live account in the next releases.

google Windows Live Essentials and Windows Live Sync.
or rather, check out www.liveside.net
MS is releasing a new Windows Mobile client that will utilize this client for over the air sync of contacts, mail, calendar, and more. just a heads up for everyone wondering
any progress?
its been nearly a year, is it not possible to ota sync with live calender?
It sucks. I want OTA syncing of my calendar. Its the only reason my phone even gets plugged into my computer anymore.

Live Framework CTP
Well, I hadn't checked back into this in a while, but it turns out that the Live Framework Community Technology Preview (CTP) was released in mid-March and DOES have access to calendar functions. Has anyone taken a look at this?

Android & Exchange Sync

i always thought android was the next best thing and i still think that based on all the different builds i got to try on this forum. some of you are amazingly talented and dedicated for doing what you do.
however, there is one thing that was been annoying me to no ends and I can't seem to find a solution for it so i am turning to the community for some help.
i use gmail a lot and i am also married to my exchange account. i use my exchange email, calendar and tasks. i can't stop using them or my life will fall apart due to all the stuff going on... i got the contacts and the calendar to sync somewhat but i just can't figure out how to sync my tasks!
i imported parts of my contacts to my gmail account and i am syncing my exchange calendar to google calendar using google calendar sync but i can't figure out how to sync my tasks with android. can you please share if you know how to keep everything in sync?? i am literally at the verge of giving up on android completely and going back to windows mobile because i can't figure this out...
Google does not support task syncing with exchange.
At the moment they only support Calendar and contacts and email.

There are several apps and builds which support full exchange sync (email, calendar, contacts) but only two paid apps support + tasks syncing: Touchdown Pro and Moxier Mail. I have great experience working Moxier and i would recommend that you try out that.
If you are willing to pay, this will handle tasks on Android:
http://www.nitrodesk.com/dk_touchdownScreenshots.aspx
There is a free trial in the marketplace for it if you want to try it out. Personally I think it is kinda crappy - if it were free or a couple bucks then whatever, but since we have the option of WinMo or Android if you really need tasks then it is best to stick with WinMo for now.
I've seen rumors that Google is working on task support so we shall see how it looks in Android 3 or whatever...

HTC HD2 Facebook integration

Just 2 questions
1. Is there a way of sync-ing your phone contacts with facebooks so it uses the contacts face book picture etc, i can do this individualy but is there a way of doing it in one big go.
2. Can you sync your facebook calander to the HTC HD2 calander?
1. Login your facebook account in Setting/Data services. It will sync your contact with facebook avatar and birthday but the names in your contact book must be the same with your facebook friend names, if not, u have to sync one by one
2. I dont think we can
Anybody know of a better facebook app out there for the HD2?? Lets face it, the one that comes out of the box is about as much use as tits on a fish.......
There is an updated version floating around

Does the integration remain after a new ROM flash? If the names have been changed etc the first time, should do I guess?

the integration info is saved in the 'notes' field of your contact. once you sync back AND associate your phone with fb they will all re sync.
The one reason syncing with fb is good: profile pictures. Most of my friends dont like me to sit there, and take a picture of them when they give me their number, so this helps.

This works for most of my contacts, but I had to do a hard reset ant almost 1/4 didn't have nothing in Notes field - so didn't associate automatically. Is there any way to make a "full resync" or something similar so I don't have to manually associate those contacts next time?
P.S. something more simple than manually adding a Note
Does anyone have problem with this facebook sync. Everytime I try to sync, my HD2 gets verry laggy until it don't respond, and I have to pull my battery. This happens when i manually select update now, or if my phone is set to automaticaly update. Its really annoying
It's smooth for me
Maybe sth related to ur rom. Try hard-reset or flash another rom
I have done hard reset a bunch of times. HTC customer support told me to install the latest ROM, and then do a hard reset. I tryed it, but with no luck. Everything else, works like a charm. I do use ROM from HTC 1.66.409.1 (76641) NOR. Maybe I should look into some custom ROM's? Any tips for a good rom? I have been searching the forum and there is so many to choose from. Can I use anyone? Or should it be one for Norway?
Do u have HSPL on your phone? If yes, try to install a couple of cook roms. Remember to do a task 29 before flashing any rom. If u have no idea about what HSPL or Taks29 is, please do take a look in the HD2 Rom development, read threads about them, and there's also a thread for noob flashing guide. It takes time but worth it.
I can suggest u a couple of cook roms I've used but it's better that u should look into the Rom threads to see which one suit ur needs, every rom is really good and fast, stable more than stock rom. I can recommend some such as CleanEX, Energy or Touch-X
there is a program called SocialSync can be found here
SocialSync 0.1
Imports (one-way synchonization) your Facebook contacts to your Pocket Outlook.
Supports the following sync mappings:
* Facebook super-sized profile pic --> Outlook Picture
* Facebook Full Name --> Outlook's FileAs, FirstName, MiddleName, LastName
* Facebook Profile URL --> Outlook GovernmentID
* Facebook Relationship Status --> Outlook Spouse
* Facebook Birthday --> Outlook Birthday
* Adds "facebook" to Outlook Categories
* Facebook Status --> Outlook JobTitle
* Facebook Personal Website --> Outlook Website URL (only first one since Outlook only supports 1 URL)
* Facebook Email (image representation) --> Outlook Email
Supported on:
WM2003, WM5, WM6, WM6.5, WM6.5.3
QVGA (240x320) Portrait (want more formats? donate!)
.NET Compact Framework 3.5
i tried it on my HD2, it does work but it does take a long time to sync and transfer facebook details to your contacts (well maybe for me coz i linked like 100+ contacts)
but one thing good about this is that it edited the birthday field on my contacts on my device, and now can be used by manilaBirthday
also, if contact doesnt exist on your device, u can add friends from FB to ur contact list
question... if i login to the sense facebook without enabling it to download automatically every 2 hours, would facebook in sense still try to update by itself?
the reason here is i logged in to facebook in sense but did not enable automatic downloading yet surprisingly my phone started to access my internet. others experience the same?
does any1 know how to get the facebook sync back in action after turning it off. I disabled it temporarily, but I lost all the synced data as a result. After reactivating it, it no longer syncs (although for some reason it seems to acknowledge that the contacts have a facebook profile linked to them, but it is unable to download photos, updates etc)
Is there anyway to do it aside from a hard reset? Something I'd rather avoid
I'm using the stock ROM 3.14 (WWE)
Facebook for hd2 or hd2 for facebook?
No one has come across "snaptu"? Go to http://m.snaptu.com . there you download a app for your hd2, there is unsigned and verisigned which i dont understand the significance of it. But i lliked it. It is a JAVA app so you need to run JBlend and then snaptu app. i can do everything as on a computer except CHAT. Do you know anything better? please tell me. especially one that you can chat with.

Dealing with Google/Outlook sync

Hey,
I'd like to revert to wm6.5 for a while for several reasons and I'd like to now if there's a way to keep Google as my main account. Let me rephrase : I'd like to keep using Contacts, Gmail, Calendar, etc. and see them sync with WinMo 6.5, whether it would be through Outlook or anything else.
Is it possible ?
Thanks !

Hi,
What android are you running?
If you are on NAND ,do you have SENSE ROM?
If you are on SENSE ROM, you can use Activesync to sync with outlook. This will keep your contacts and calendar.GMAIL will save with Google and you can open this using ANY operating system(pc or phone).
If you don't have SENSE ROM,there is a progam called MyPhoneExplorer ,which will also work.

[Q] A litle too annoyed about missing java on optimus 7

Guys! I have a litle (big for me) problem: I really miss a few java apps and I wanna know how the heck can I port those on my beloved optimus 7? This phone doesn't support java, but I believe that some apps can be ported! Can I find a tutorial about this??? I will atach a java file that I wanna put on my phone, maybe a kind gent developer may look at it and tell me at least if is possibile! Thanks in advance and please, don't let a poor noob to stay in the dark!
I'm sorry to disappoint you but there's no way you can run java on wp7. There is no java runtime in wp7.
The only thing that would be possible is to build the app from scratch in silverlight. It shouldn't be that had if you know some C# and you have the source code fro the desired java app. But i think building a sinaxar app it's pretty easy if using some specific web services or API. Maybe you should look into building your own simple app instead of porting the java one. You can find many tutorials on wp7 developing and it is easier than you might think.
PS: Have you searched for Orthodox Calendar on Marketplace?
PPS: I have an idea that might work: Search for an orthodox holiday calendar in ical format. You should be able to find some online. Download the ical and sync it with your exchange calendar. Then sync the exchange calendar with your phone. The calendar should be on your phone this way. So you don't need a sinaxar, because you have the orthodox holidays in your phones calendar. I think this should work with google calendar or msn calendar as well.
Orthodox calendar is more about russian and not romanian! Already tried it! I've syncronized my windows live calendar with an .ics one, but now I'm facing another trouble: yahoo mail account not working! Keep asking me for the correct password! Tried to delete it and create another one, but does not work. I've tried with advanced settings and on INCOMING mail had pop.mail.yahoo.com, tried again with imap.mail.yahoo.com, but nothing seems to work!

Hey,
I would recommend using google calendar or exchange (if you have one) for sync. Yahoo is known for issues, and Hotmail... i have no experience with that. But with the first two it works great.
Problem solved. Imap was the problem. Thanx a lot, but I still miss a lot at least a java emulator
