Does Android keep the .apk files? if so where?

" After android installs an application from the Marketplace, does it keep the .apk file?
Is there a standard location where Android would keep such files?
The location is "/system/app" "
First i would like to explain this is taken from a thread from some other forum so is not mine...
Just want to know if there is another answer as this does not work for me ...desire v5 build
Well I dont know the answer to your question, But if you just want *.apk files you can download OnTheFly Backup and let it export all installed apk to your SD card =)
and here
/data/app
/data/app-private

/system/app for the most part.. if there is a /system/data file, there may be some in there. Also apps downloaded from the market are stored directly in /data/app or data/app-private

this is an easy way, but if you wanna browse your system files directly search around for Android Commander

[Q] Reinstalling Timescape

Hi. Been searching everywhere and cant find a way to reinstall timescape.
I have tried system/apps but the apk is not there anymore or anything that is connected to Timescape.
The reason I deleted timescape is because it is one of the reasons that the battery life is so bad on the X10.
Now I cant get to my contacts. I am using acontacts.apk but for some reason the resolution is very bag on my contacts pics.
I have found a timescape.apk but it says it cannot install on my device. Maybe the apk is compatible for certain builds?
Maybe someone can suggest another app for contacts with a better pic resolution.
Thanks in advance
Oh yes : using rooted 026
Here a the Timescape.apk file
Thanks man.
DL now will let you if everything is cool.

You need to correct the permissions of the apk file once you have copied it over to system\app otherwise it will give you the error you stated in your earlier post.
@ dong2007 - Hi thanks man worked like a bomb.
@ Marylandcookie : I didnt have to change permissions just installed .apk
I thought that there were diff. versions of timescape.apk for diff. firmwares thats y it didnt work with the one I dl
hmm for some reason i cant install it =( how do u change the permission?

yup.. its possible... i changed my launcher pro to the plus version... u will need a program which can modify it.. i used 7zip file manager...
u can get it at ( http://www.7-zip.org/ )
cheers..

Ah that works......
And afterwards?
Can i just remove the apps in the apps folder?
And place my apps in?
Or do i also need to edit a install config file?
And how to zip it back like the original?
Thx
i tested removing apps and everything is cool need to test adding apps
7zip ask u if u wanna rebulid it and ure Done
Aha,zipping back to tar.gz can be done with this one:
http://www.gzip.org/ free .
Going to test now, removed all thing i do not want, and put in my own programs....let's see if it works, report asap.
This will work... you just need to be careful what you remove since you may end up with an unbootable android OS (boot loop) ... of course that's the beauty of the dual boot... you just copy a fresh android folder over and start again

do i need to rename it to tar.gz?
7 zip makes a .7z from it
I think i got it.
Just zipped with 7zip,placed that file on gz converter.
Removed only apps i do not need, and add my own, test now.
no just open htcleo_update.tar.gz
u will see htcleo_update.tar open it too
remove the apks close 7zip
its will ask u do u want to update the archive
wait till its finished u will see temp file
ok that works, altough i can not add apk files
adding apk not working ?
its gives error at first boot ?

No,misunderstand.....removing with the method from you works,it is booting now and installing.
What i meant to say is add my own apk files in that way,but 7zip says when i want to add my own apps: nor supported. (srry english not so good)
Ok,does not work...
I only removed launcher pro, notting else....
Android boots, but when almost on home screen setup crashes.....
i removed same wallpapers and email gmail and some more didnt got error
try another htcleo_update.tar.gz with normal launcher too
im testing now with adobe flash and same more removed
the flash didn't installed successfully
browser still need the plugin

Yep correct, but i do not know how to add it?
Removing other apps works with 7zip like flashlight, voicerecording etc.
But when i try to add files with 7zip it says not supported.

Your welcome
u must have root privileges and must enable R/W mode
if u don't know how to install using root explorer
paste the app to system/app
Did you try just to push the .apk with rootexplorer to system/app/ ?
Cause system apps don't need to install in the normal way I think.
[EDIT] to slow...

Y you can set RW to system with SGS tools:
Apply script--> mount_system_rw.q.txt
tada you can move anything to system/app
when you move apps to system/app folder, you need to set permissions to rw-r--r--
This can be done by setting permissions as:
Read Write Execute
User Check Check Blank
Group Check Blank Blank
Others Check Blank Blank
Apps should then work
Thank you all guys, now i know how to move them or change them, thanks a lot!! Thanks thanks thanks ^^

[Q] A little understanding of APK required !!!!!!!

Hello!
I am new to android and need to know a little bit about the .APK files.
Now I don't know about the users of other phones, but Xperia PLAY users can now download a couple of EA games for free, using the Xperia PLAY app. When we click on a particular game, say Worms for instance, they take us to a webpage where from we download an .APK file.
This file later installs the app or the game in the phone. My question is what happens to this .APK file. I mean I can assume that the .APK was downloaded in SD because we are talking about androids which don't have much internal space. But the real question is; are we supposed to delete these .APK files, as we do in Windows' computers with the .exe files or are they deleted on their own?

.APK files don't just act as an executable installers but they also act as the main executable of the application itself. when you install an application off your sd card, a copy of the .APK file is moved to /data/app/. You are then free to delete the .APK file from the download directory on your SD Card
So u r telling me that all the applications I hav downloaded so far (both which hav been uninstalled and which are still installed) have their apk's filling up ny de memory.

No when you uninstall an app the .APK is deleted from /data/app/
Ok but what about the apk of installed and uninstalled apps in the sd card? Do I hav to delete them manually?

Yeah once you install an app, if you want to save space you have to delete the .APK off your SD Card manually

I think he means the .APK he used to install the app, .APK's are no longer held in the android_secure folder
