Hello all. Sorry if this seems dumb! I just got a Nexus S and everything is great apart from when sending a SMS it does not show a picture next to my name it only shows pictures of my contacts. I know there is probably a simple way to change it but for the life of me i can't find it! Thanks for your help.
bump bump bump. Easy question for someone out there.

in that case, your having the same issue im having, on my N1 it kinda just eventually showed up
Bloody phones lol
lucky for me though i know what i look like
yea just annoying when u send a msg.
Could try making sure you have your phone number set on your sim card.
Yeah, I had to make an entry for "me" with my phone number to get it to show my picture. Not really a big deal.
Named it "WHOAMI Phone Identity" so it's more or less out of the way. Inculded y address and additional contact information, since it can serve a second purpose in the event that you leave your phone somewhere and a person who isn't a complete douchebag tries to get in contact to return it.

Hi guys, I've had my HD2 for a few weeks now and i'm loving it (Just come from an iPhone aswell). But there are two things anoying me, and I want to fix them.
1. Is there anyway to stop the Squares showing in the Email preview, as far as I know they are image placeholders and they make the email preview look a mess.
2. Is there a way to download all the images in the email message automatically. Because at the moment its telling me its blocked due to privicy settings and I have to click to download them in every email..
Thanks for any help guys.
Hiya, that is annoying me too maybe it is a limitation of sense 2.5? and I am pretty certain the other bit about internet content being blocked such as pictures cannot be turned off.
I have tried this myself by downloading all the email +attachments but nothing so far works.
Anyone know a fix for these like the original poster commented on?
Yeah, I'd like to know if there's a reg hack or similar for that, does my head in as well. It completely spoils an otherwise very good email app

This looks like a font issue to me. Maybe there's characters in the emails that aren't in the font that the email preview tab uses. I don't know, but that's what it looks like.

You can't make it automatically download images for security reasons. Embedded images can be the cause of much spam, and can also be used (in rare cases) for spreading malware.
Also, the email application that you see when you click an email in the Sense UI is actually part of Windows, not Sense.
I'll be very suprised if you ever find a way to make it automatically download images, and I wouldn't want my phone to become virus-ridden so would never use it if it did exist.
The squares you see in the email preview are the symbols for the "enter" key.
When you get an email from someone that has more lines and that person pressed enter or more enters at the end of a line those enters end up being squares in the email preview.
Unfortunately you cant do anything about it. I'm a software developer and i know about this issue from my work. It's HTC's job to eliminate the squares and it has to be done in the code. We can't do it by ourselves.
I would love to have the images downloaded automatically as well, but Microsoft didn't provided an option for this. At least let us chose whether we want to be secure or not.

It's not that at all. It's any character that is not defined in the font that's used. If you like, I can take a screenshot of an email that is FULL of boxes, and I know for a fact that they're not all line breaks/page returns.
The enter key doesn't cause it, or you'd see it at the end of every line that has a line break/page return, and you don't. But anyway, this isn't resolving the issue, so I'll bow out
Yeah, i'm sure the font doesn't cover all the characters... well... its HTC's fault on this one.

Laying fault anywhere, whether correct or not, does not help these guys resolve the issues they've raised. Let's keep it on topic eh?

Well, i could suggest that someone with good knowledge of wm should look into the fonts being used in the emails. Maybe they can be changed. I'm sure new fonts can be installed but i don't know how to change them and where.
Its also possible that this issue is unsolvable because of the current coding of the email tab in sense. We need to know for sure what's causing the problem.
any follow up on this guys ?? would like to get it sorted
Is anyone else experiencing this when attempting to reply to a sms message.
The message 'Tap to compose your text' appears but it wont let me 'tap'. I have to wait for about 10 seconds before tapping the screen actually allows me to compose a reply.
Yes, I have delays in the text messaging app. It is very laggy. I can be typing and press a key 3 or 4 times before it registers.
Cheers, I've just figured it out, the issue only happens when I have lots of messages to load in a conversation. It doesn't occur when its a short conversation with one or two messages in.
i think its a known bug keep your conversation list down by backing up on myphone is a suggestion i read somewhere, then you can delete on your phone without losing them completely
hope thats helpful
yes its all do do with the amount of messages in the "thread" but even if i've got say 100 messages in a convo ....whys it lag so much ??? its only loading kilobytes of info... and for the spec of the phone i find this poor coding very annoying !!!!!!!!!!!!
if you look bottom right of the screen (just right of the paper clip) you'll see a thin grey line decreasing . When that's finished you can tap and type. And yes the more sms you have the more the delay.
I have the sams problem. I have over 500 texts under some contacts. and It's a big waiting game to answer a text.
I dont understand why HTC have choosen to load ALL texts. the last 20 would have been enough.
In the new ROM 1.48 the problem is the same.

Oh man, that sucks was hoping it would be fixed there
I'm actually beginning to get a little dissapointed by the official rom
I love tweaking stuff etc... but having problems with something every other phone handles perfectly like SMS is ridiculous.

Has anyone actually fed this into HTC to make them aware of the issue so they know it is everyone who is complaining and not just a select few?

Well, I've actually reported this today, as I am sick of it
I wonder if HTC uses their own phones they make...
I think they made it for people like me who delete every sms at the end of the day. Don't get mad, just a joke but that's really what I do unless I need to keep it for reference in which case I copy it to an alarmed note.
It's a rather strange issue. I have several lengthy conversations (not 500 messages long, of course, but with dozens of them), and all but one load instantly and the keyboard pops up also instantly. One of them is incredibly laggy, although it's like 10 messages long. The only difference I see is that the other person has a contact picture attached and she is my wife.
Perhaps is there a way (cab, setting, ...) to makes auto-delete messages after a certain limit (for example, delete messages when there's more than 50...) ? Already looked in settings, but didn't found that..
Here are work-arounds for the SMS lag problem...
Option 1:
when the SMS conversation is building (the gray bar is shrinking), just click the SEND button. It will prompt "This message is blank...", then click No, and it will go back to the SMS conversation -- but this time, there is no lag and you can start typing after pressing the "Tap here to compose text"
Option 2:
if there is one or two persons that you exchange lots of SMS with, put them as a Quick Link (to SMS) on the front page. That way, when you press the Quick Link, it starts a direct SMS composition without dialogue, and thus no lag.
Can't wait till HTC properly fix this!
Enjoy!

Option 1 doesn't works here, the second does
hey so i have the stock rom..when i click on a text message can click the area it says to tap to type. the phone freezes and wont let me text then like 10 seconds or so sometimes if i start using the swype it works but doesnt show what i wrote until i re click the screen. anyone have problems with swype and texting with it freezing and not showing what you type? any fixes for this? i have tried to uninstall/reinstall swype and still same problem.
i have the same issue..... :-(
its not swype, its the long pause a lot of people get when they have a lot of txt messages, The screen can take a few seconds to load them, and nothing happens on screen while it does it, and then it selects the last message.
lol .... with all that memory hd2 comes with u think it should have that problem? pathetic... have same problem.. want to know how i fix it? i turned off the phone and went back to iphone 3gs .. thats the way u fix it...

hehe, thats one answer, my own workaround is to not store loads of messages, , blimey, most of mine get deleted as soon as ive read them. Never understood anyone that wants thousands of messages like some people do.

Same here.
I flash my phone so much that I never have that many text lol. But I tell all my customers who come in with slow phones to delete all their text at least once a week. There is no reason to keep them longer than that. They just sit there and take up space and slow your phone down. If you really cant part with them back them up to your computer then delete them off your phone.
Yes, just delete previous text messages and problem fixed! It usually starts doing that when you have like 60 previous messages on 1 contact
I have heard already of this android bug from the Google nexus one forum but now it happened to me too. I had maybe 6 sms threads in the stock android sms application. I sent a question via sms to one person and it appears in the right thread. I get an sms back from another person answering the question. The second person who answered is one of the 6 threads actually in my sms application. This is really a serious problem....
Google has a serious problem to fix. I can't imagine if I sent a text to the wrong person. This is why I won't touch the stock messaging app. Handcent all the way.

Don't feel so safe in the google forum thread people with chompSMS and Handcent could reproduce the same problem. So it's much deeper in the android system.

strange, this happened to me once and i text a lot (at least 3k a month). does anyone know if this is unique to the n1 or happens on all androids?
I ran into this too. It even appeared like i sent it to the proper recipient. I got a lot of wtf?'s later in the night. Did a power cycle to fix it and everything has been cool since I've updated.
My G1 used to do this also, I was starting to think I was alone on this one.
Im not saying the problem doesnt exist, or putting you guys down at all etc, but in my 3k texts a month ive never seen this yet. I guess the closest ive come is trying to quick press a thread added with rotating the screen at the same time = possibly click on wrong thread, and if in landscape you dont see the previous text.
I don't text too much, but I have noticed sometimes the conversation drops off after I send something, or at least I thought I was sending something.
i've never experienced this issue yet either, and i've used handcent since day one just because of this. but i cant imagine the trouble i would have if some of my texts went to the wrong person. seriously.
its possible i'll never know if someone got the wrong text and just never told me...

I never rotate my phone to landscape while texting, so I can exclude this theory. I also realized if you want to copy paste something into a sms it always jumped back to the wrong thread....not satisfied....I text my coworkers and friends and absolutely don't want a mix up of recipients.
This happened to me friend's nexus one today. He was running CM RC1
this also happened to a friend of mine with galaxy s.

It is. I think a lot of people are not aware of this problem. I you only text things like "how are you" you would probably not even realize that you get the answer from the wrong person. If it is delicate some wrong recipient would probably ignore the message instead of complaining. So you never know if it by accident went to the wrong person...
Note to self: be careful what you text until this gets fixed.
people with the original droid also had this problem occur on their phones. its gotta be something with android OS...but what could it be that google hasnt found at this point.
I find that if I text something, then go back to the main message list and try to open another conversation before it has finished "refreshing" it will open a random thread instead of the one I intended to. As far as I know I have not sent a text to a wrong contact. To give you an idea of my usage I have used 2841 messages and I have 10 days left in my billing cycle.
I don't text enough to notice a problem like this, but I'm guessing Google Voice is immune?
Thankfully this bug hasn't happened to me yet (that I know of). Someone hand me the biggest piece of wood you can find (keep your wood jokes to yourself ) so I can knock on it.
Since I have redone my phone, contacts in my contact list the name is now showing up in text messages. Anyone know what the problem may be?
Thanks.

Ok I took my phone back to stock. I have since put a custom kernel on it, mobile ap, and emotionless beast. Every since then when I get a text message of someone from my contact list, it only shows the number instead of the name.
Hopefully that makes better sense.

I am a flash-a-holic, so maybe I can help a "little".!! I have noticed that many of the latest/greatest themes use some form of the stock messaging ap, which has a check box in the settings menu (under "extra settings") that says something like "Only Mobile Numbers". Unchecking this has fixed this issue for me.
And before I get flamed too bad by people who "know" this isn't the reason, but have not offered their own suggestions - this is what I have noticed and what has worked for me!
i swear that is a setting... i cannot remember exactly where i saw that but i know i did, unless it was on another android... i wish i could be more help, ill try to see if i can look it up tomorrow at work, have access to all the menus on one screen rather than cheking everything on my phone
