Aloha,
I hope all is well with ya all. Im currently using an HTC Desire with HD Rom and lovng it. The sense UI is just awesome.
I saw dell streak & I tell you i was impressed even with the look & feel, but I havent used it yet so just need your opinions. I hope you can help me out.
a. Im getting a Rogers version(Canada) will i get the officil froyo 2.2 OTA or I have to root it to flash it custom?
b. Are there any other desire users here, if yes please kindly let me know If there are any surprises (pleasent/unpleasent) I'll be getting. Is the streak UI in any way/shape better or closer to the Sense UI?
c. I see that it doesnt uses the universal micro usb for charging, so are their any car chargers available in the market?
d. Carrying cases?
e. Is the internal memory sufficient enough to install lots of apps+custom roms?
f. Is the video calling practical and good over 3g/wifi? And what apps do we use to make video calls, & I wonder if tango works??
g. Finally VOIP does skype works?
Please let me know your opinions. Thanks.
Would you pick streak over Nexus S?
Anyone???

a) Not really sure about Rogers. But flashing a custom ROM isn't that hard.
b) Can't really say since I haven't used the Desire extensively. One major difference you'll see is the lack of ROMs. There's just one dev (DJ Steve) that's developing ROMs for the Streak. And he's doing an excellent job of it too!!
c) There's a Dell car docking kit which is available. A bit pricey if I remember correctly though!
d) Otterbox! You have three cases to choose from with Otterbox.
e) It's plenty!
f) Video calls work fine. I use Fring. Tried Tango a couple of times too, but not really an extensive user of Tango. Both worked fine though.
g) Skype also works fine.
Hope that helps!

I picked up a adapter for the car from walmart for 10 bucks. splits it to 2 plugs plus has a usb charger on it. Just have to make sure you get a powerful one. i have read a lot of complaints from others in my searches about low power usb adapters dont do well

A) I dunno lol
B) My first android phone and gotta say I absolutely love it.
C) Pretty much any D/C to USB will do just make sure the wattage is correct. Dell also sells some pretty nice accessories. (overpriced though..)
D)/\ /\
E) oh yes. Had more than any phone needs really.
F) basically fring. (with official the ffc doesn't work with third party apps, if you run steves custom then ffc works with fring ect. But not in regular camera. Pretty much an either/or kinda thing.)
G) works for me.
Hope I was helpful
And I would choose the streak over any phone on the market atm

was reading on android central up on a 1.6 build which has the nexus one style which looks really nice.

still some bugs and problems, and alot of people are over there trying to get it fully functional and put together a rom, any chance of this being picked up here?

you can download it on page 7 but you will also need google bits which i am right now trying to install. but having trouble
That dev is also a member of this site, so technically it is picked up here. Just don't think ther's a thread.
yeah their are a few downloads and .apks for the htc keyboard, just seeing some problems with sms, bluetooth and data occasionally.
I know I am no dev, but would love to just see a rom with the nexus one style.
and yeah he says he comes here, but I havent seen much about it on xda, so wanted to help its progress by atleast shedding some light on it.
oo nice thanks for that

Yup. I mostly lurk here. A bit too much drama . I even forgot my original login and pass lol.
I've had to halt development on this one (mostly) as I simply don't have time. Crisis at work, and real life sucks. It's no fun spending 16 hours a day with a bluetooth in each ear glued in front of a PC. I only have time to focus on one project in my free time. I still monitor the thread at Android Central, so I help where i can.
Just wanted to add credit goes to quietcblongs for the fixes to even get this partially running. Any monkey can grab the source from git and type make in the terminal. Without his work this would just be a toy for me to play with on my Ion, and even then not everything works.
i would love to see this take off, to bad bt doesnt work because I use it everyday. i just want a 1.6 or higher on my hero with a nexus one look, (as does everyone else probably lol)
I would like to see a melding of this with the 1.6w/live wallpapers
Where is there a 1.6 with live wallpapers? I've only seen the 2.0.1...
i tried live wallpapers on this build, no go, got the phone to recognize them, was even able to install from market, just force closes on the picker, i like the launcher on this and the camera that works, but it ill not be my daily rom, going back to 2.0.1

forgot that LW was from the nexus 2.1 would have been cool though
That thing looks sliiiiick as hell..is it stable?..does the camera,phone,texting/pic mail work?...
Just played around with this ROM and it was brilliant. I couldn't get the Touch Input to work at all though, and Lockbot didn't work and forceclose. For those two reasons I had to revert back to Fresh.
But this sneak peak at something better than 1.5 was a real breath of fresh air. Thanks to all the devs.
This looks good. Going to Nandroid and flash this when I get home.
Any reports on this ROM's stability? Could this be used day to day?

if you dont use bt or headphones then yes
I must say that I am very impressed at this point. Only issue I'm having is difficulty pulling up the Market. Doesn't seem to want to load the EULA or whatever it makes you accept after every wipe while on EVDO. I switched to WIFI and it let me right in. No problem accessing protected apps either... I just installed Evernote.
Nice to have something fresh to play with for my Hero.
I would flash this rom, but I do use headphones to listen to music. I also heard that there are some MMS issues, confirm/deny?
First off, I want to say that this ROM rocks and the sheer speed alone has made me not even care about sense. I was a little hesitant on flashing this thinking I would miss sense but as stated earlier, the speed of the rom more than makes up for it.
I have been rather fortunate with my experiences using this rom. My text messages work as well as my headphones. I was suprised that my headphone jack works as I have read for the most part that headphones arent working with this rom. Looks like I have gotten lucky.
I have decided to use this as my daily driver and the only issues that I've experienced at this point is just lack of bluetooth and speaker phone which have already been mentioned and aren't deal breakers for me. Big thanks to the devs and keep up the awesome work!

Hey guys, I'm new to the streak and mine should be arriving either today or tomorrow. I ordered the official home dock for it as well and was wondering if it supports full mirroring via the hdmi out port on the dock or if there is anyway to enable this feature through an app or custom ROM? I'm no newbie to flashing roms and such, but havent really found any clear answers on whether the streak can mirror displays on 2.2 or what eactly it can display through the dock and hdmi output.
Thanks for the responses!
hdmi out only mirrors certian apps, i think it's media players and music players.
Most things arnt mirrored by default.
This is an (intentional) software limitation, it could be removed but noone's gone and done that yet (afaik)
you can try apps that fixes this for other phones, but i dont know if it'll work on the streak

thanks for the information! I'll look into it and see if maybe I can figure out how to remove the limitation, I have a decent amount of experience in this kind of stuff and maybe I'll be the one to make a breakthrough
If you can figure out the technical aspects of making it work i'm sure steve wouldnt mind including it in the next streakdroid (if/when/whatever that is)

well, as soon as I get my hands on the streak I'll try taking a look at things. I've hacked/messed around with the original iphone 2g, HTC Touch Pro2 I generally ran android on, Motorola Cliq and most recently I own / mess around with my Xperia X10 and Viewsonic G-tablet
I have a background in programming as well and also was very active in development for the original sony psp so maybe I'll be able to help with things
the streak only has 1 real developer which is dj_steve (i'm not counting theme developers or app developers, only rom developers)
pretty much anything you can bring to the table would likely be helpful, if you think you wanna try your hand at the streak you should talk to steve on #dellstreak

Tried this.....
Didn't work. Says not working error due to either lack of super user permissions (which it has) or enabling hdmi mirror in the build.prop file.
Checked the build.prop file and there was no entry. I added the entry manually and still nothing.

i'm probably going to get an atrix tomorrow and wondering what the first thing i should do as soon as i open the box. i'm not a 100% android noob. i have rooted and flashed my galaxy tab and I9000m and understand the basics. but i have a few questions like
- Can i Disable Moto Blur or should i?
- is rooting the same as most other devices, debugging mode/super one click etc?
- safe apps to freeze with titanium backup(list or link)
- is 2.3 coming or is it already out?
- is it worth it or should i wait?
- other personal problems or opinions would be greatly appreciated.
- not too important but how are the stock headphones? is there a remote similar to HTC and Iphone or no?
- and call quality through them if known would be nice too.
- and can i use any 3.5mm headphone or is it specific to moto?
Thankyou

I can answer some of these but not all as I'm sort of a n00b.
Is rooting the same? Yes, pretty much.
2.3 out? It's not out yet, but in a few weeks.
Is it worth it? Well I am an ex iPhone 4 user, and it's pretty worth it! I am going to be honest though, without having a case, its a you know what to not get scratches even when taking good care of it. Also the build feels cheap if your coming from a more solid phone. this phone is ALL plastic, but its the stuff inside that counts. Also just miss my iPhone 4, lol. it's all i was used to for 3 years.
Personal problems, some apps like facebook dont check in properly, more than 70 percent of the time it doesn't work. GPS is among the best i've seen however, locking on almost instantly. umm camera quality sucks, but the phone is pretty consistent with flash and plays pretty awesome . fast fast fast phone. it has its quirks though, however if your an android user and know what its about, it's probably the phone for you!
Rooting requires downgrading firmware then upgrading to maintain root, iirc.
GB will be released soon no eta though.
Bootloader bypass is being worked on as we speak, 2nd init is working but needs roms.
Right now is the time to get this phone, with the devs working on so many solutions to Moto and Att's lockdown the potential of this phone is incredible.
Also with Netflix coming soon and the qhd display it will get even better, however the yellows on this display seem a little greenish, and has miffed a few people, but I really don't pay much attention to it.
The only problems I have seen is random reboots, all from apps not optimized for this phone.
As far as camera quality, IMO it is the best camera quality I have seen on a phone and that include the iphone4, video is great, the only thing it lacks is stock camera customizing i.e. lens effects, more color options ect., easily rectified with apps.
This is the best phone I have ever owned and would recommend it to anyone looking for something for in a phone.

1. Yes you can, prob comes down to personal preference.
2. No. I am very happy with the GladRoot method. Do this BEFORE you accept the OTAs.
3. I dont know of a link or have a list sorry.

5. Its worth it!! Join the party.

Unfortunately u cant bcoz its more than a skin.. its entrenched within the OS. However freezing apps like Social Networking which are from Motoblur and installing a Lanucher gets rid of most of the problem. You can definitely root. Gingerbreak works flawlessly.

-You can disable motoblur by installing a pseudo-rom (i suggest gingerblur) or by using third party launcher (i.e. launcher pro) and freezing motoblur through titanium backup.
-Rooting actually is kinda the same(ish). You don't have to root before you ota. You can ota to 1.83 and use gingerbreak to root it. Use this link to install gingerbreak on you phone, http://atrix4ghacks.com/atrix-4g-hacks/how-to-root-atrix-4g/ then run gingerbreak from phone to one click root.
-Gingerbread is coming out in like a few weeks. You can check out the gb preview thread in android dev.
-its worth it
-um it doesn't come with stock headphones, but they sound just as good as iphone with any headphoens.
-call quality is good
one issue it has is that it kinda gets warm (or hot if using for a long time), especially around the bottom portion. oddly it doesn't get nearly as hot on the lower back of the phone as it does at the lower front glass of the phone.
hope i helped
I wouldn't do anything other than root and enable sideloading. Be sure to get the Amazon marketplace for the one free app a day. Most are garbage, but some (like the Nuance FlexT9 keyboard are great. I think Motoblur is fine, despite what many say. Decide for yourself if it really doesn't fit with how you use it. I just chose not to add my facebook account. It works fine in my experience.
I know they're a lot of people wondering like myself.. What do you guys think is the best video chat app currently out that works best for our phones... I use to love Tango but it stopped working for me and my Wife's Epic.. of course its been a few months since I used it.. But which do you think is the best? I figured I would ask before throwing another 10 apps on my phone for testing. Also what roms are you running with it?
Thanks

Let me break it down:
Here is a list of the video call apps that I know to be available. If i'm missing one, let me know. I'd love to try it out:
Tango (Android/iPoop) - I'm going to assume this is the most popular. Video quality seems to be pretty good. I do have some occasional feedback issues with audio, but that comes and goes. The latest version of Tango FC'd everytime I opened it, but luckily for me, I had the version right before the update backed up, so I'm still in business.
Fring (Android/iPoop) - This was the first app I used for video calls. It did the job. I haven't used it in a while, and I know they've improved on it. I switched to Tango because everyone I knew was using it.
Qik (Android/iPoop) - I've never used Qik. At first it didn't support iPoop, and that was the only people I had to talk to via video call. Friends i've spoken with that use it don't seem to prefer it over any of the other solutions, so I haven't really had the urge to try it myself.
Yahoo Messenger (Android/iPoop/PC) - I've had mixed results with Yahoo. It seems to work pretty well for the most part, and is useful when chatting phone to PC as it's simple and alot of people already have a yahoo ID. The only issue I had with it was the video was always tilted sideways no matter which way I held my phone...
Google Talk (Android/PC) - I went down this road when I tried the leaked Gingerbread ROM. I had high hopes, but this was pretty much unuseable for me. I was able to connect, but video was too choppy at best. I'm positive this will improve in the future, but as of today, I don't recommend it.
ooVoo (Android/iPoop/PC) - This is an interesting app. It allows conference calling, so you can actually carry on video calls simultaneously with more than one user. I used this shortly and tested it for a phone to PC call and it seemed to be pretty decent. I'd have to give it a little more time and testing, but my first impression was that it did the job pretty well.
Skype (Android/iPoop/PC) - I know this one is new. I think there's a thread if you want to try to get this to work on your phone. Haven't tried it... can't really speak on it. I would check out the thread if you're interested. I'm sure there's feedback there.
As with everything on this community, YMMV. And keep in mind, all of my opinions are based on using the app with a wi-fi connection, so if you're going with 3g or 4g, you'll just have to test what's out there and see what gives you the best quality call. I hope this helps at least a little bit.
If nothing else, it'll at least give you some options to try.
I just used a modded skype for froyo over 4g and it worked beautifully except for the fact that I was sideways on my friends comp.
It was mad clear! He also said I was laggy a bit but I blame that on the 4g. I haven't tried wifi.
You can try it. When you go to the thread about skype 2.0 in the themes and app section, click the link that talks about the sgs2 or w/e and then there will be another link where the author says "TRY THIS ONE FOR FROYO"
That's the one ^_^

Well, Skype owns QIK so hopefully there will be some crossover pretty soon. Trouble is, even if it's the best program in the world it doesn't matter if your friends aren't using it. Skype is the one everyone else in the PC world seems to use, so now that it'll work on android, that's the one for me.

Sirs,
How are you all doing? this is my very first post and I decided to ride dirty with the android OS finally (I'm late..) Originally coming from that dead Symbian OS environment.. I love customization and everything related to tinkering the phones hardware and software..
So now I am about to buy a used galaxy S I9000, I just want to know what are the things to look for this used android unit? I can see it's just slightly used so what will I look for aside from the outside appearance? How about in the software itself?
I only know that the phone is on GB 2.3.3 I think and it has like a custom way of killing apps, launching..really it's my first time on android and I need professional advises and this is the best site to ask from, I know.

How do you want to use your phone?
In my opinion, this device is a disappointment for normal, everyday basic use.
If you really want android ride on SGS, keep yourself ready for be here on xda regularly for help (you tasted it already)and hacks,be ready to root your phone and be ready to reboot your phone n number of times(sometime it does auto ) and be ready to get a mixed feeling, sometime it makes you happy and sometimes you would like to throw it away.
Its my opinion based on use, not intended for anything else.

Unless you're installing the latest beta ROMs or custom ROMs, this phone is actually very stable and reliable for day to day use. And the UI is fast and responsive enough on 2.3.3. In any case, in terms of reliability and speed, the SGS is miles ahead of any Symbian device.
Wtf???
Mate. He said he likes to customize.
I have nothing but good things to say about my phone. Gps is accurate and always has been. I knocked back an sgs2 upgrade to wait for next nexus.
Check pixels and speaker.
Check Gps accuracy in maps.
Usb connects and check for 3 button combo to recovery/download mode.
Good luck and enjoy.

Guys,
My use of phone dialer, messaging and call logs comes under basic use.
And dialer lags, contacts gives message 'no additional info available' and then shows number.no matter which rom you use.
Even dialer removed from memory.
I have 2 phones in house one running stock 2.3.3 and one 2.3.5 so I am not imagining anything.
Dont reboot phone for a week and see what happens.
If it was all that good, all the ram tweaks, kernel tweaks, optimization tweaks, wouldn't even exists.
If your expr. & opinion differs post it.

wow thanks! a lot of tips already! my appreciation to you guys,
well i want my phone for calls, sms, internet, productive apps, some graphically good games?, storage for photos(bought a 16GB microSD yesterday for this phone, excited am I?) videos-movies perhaps? some noobie photography (BTW I love that touch to focus feature!)
I guess I'm more into content, really LOL
Again thanks!
PS how to enter to download mode?
I'll try first dealing with the stock roms, is there any 2.3.7 GB for galaxy cause I see it everywhere along with the CM7? is that an official firmware or CM7 based on that OEM firmware? maybe when I want more, that's the time I'll do a CM7 flash..what about skype video calling or google talk? is it good in this phone?

How do you want to use your phone?
In my opinion, this device is a disappointment for normal, everyday basic use.
If you really want android ride on SGS, keep yourself ready for be here on xda regularly for help (you tasted it already)and hacks,be ready to root your phone and be ready to reboot your phone n number of times(sometime it does auto ) and be ready to get a mixed feeling, sometime it makes you happy and sometimes you would like to throw it away.
Its my opinion based on use, not intended for anything else.

Trollollololol - back under your bridge fellow.
"Do not feed the trolls"- epic quote
I will be using this phone for everyday use, k?
Another important thing to look for: if it enters Download Mode [Vol Down + Home + Power]
If not, it can be fixed, but it involves a little risk. This would be the only risky thing you'll do software wise, after your Download Mode works, it's very hard to brick the phone.

2.3.7 was a Nexus upgrade that added things like NFC, which most phones do not have the hardware to support this. CM7 uses Nexus source code. I don't believe anything helpful for you was added/changed.
And try not to believe the crap these people are spewing. My contacts, diallers, and whatever else that guy was rambling about are just fine. And obviously that is not a problem across all ROMs, considering most ROMs use different apps (for example, Samsung apps aren't run on AOSP ROMs—and I haven't seen this problem on either).
Good luck! It's an exciting phone.
wow, thanks to all of your advices dudes! what would be a good protector for this phone aside from the screen guards?
