Most of people here has moved from windows mobile 6.5 to Android after this great revolution.
Did you have any programs in windows mobile that you are missing and wish to be on Android or you don't even know that they exists? maybe those are preventing you from completely switching to Android.
The purpose of this discussion is to help each other finding replacement tools and applications for some useful applications in windows mobile.
My applications that i missed from windows mobile:
* LMT : multitouch launcher - I've viewed a previous thread telling that it is not possible to create such an application, but in my opinion it could be done using the Accessibility services-
* g-trigger : Perform actions based on gestures with the phone. found some replacements as shake2* (shake to play next, shake to mute but those uses only one gesture with very limited actions) , tasker ( very hard to configure and record gestures)
* Garmin : I know there are many GPS applications but there is no one that can work offline, create custom map and provide 3D navigation. Since no GPS application is offering a map for my country. I usually use openstreetmap and offline map downloader to create vector navigation map for Garmin.
* And finally the reverse tethering (Internet Pass Through) just like what activesync was doing for non Desire HD/Z based ROMS (can't use them since they lack some Arabic support and are much slower than cyanogen and stock builds). I was able to reverse USB tethering to browse the web through my PC internet but many applications on Android won't run if there is no wifi or data connection is available -thinking of providing a virtual wireless interface but this needs more time -.
Do you know any replacements? or do you miss other applications from windows mobile?
Have you tried OsmAnd? Free satnav app which uses openstreetmap and consistently gets good ratings.
Forced to use wimo only by tomtom navigator or update build.
Use CoPiliot for offline GPS navigation - I do and it works great.

Ahhh see living in the United States, CoPilot works flawlessly for me but it's definitely not my favorite. I really prefer iGO8 from WM but I have yet to find a similar GPS software for Android that is available in the United States.
maybe Navigon would be the best for me, but i'd really be glad to give it a test before spending 60€...

Actually this image is from the internet
I live in Syria. IGO, AERO, CoPilot and Navigon do not provide a map or navigation for my country!
The good thing with Garmin is that it can give me the features of those applications with a custom map taken from a map source.
I only use WM for TomTom now (and not even that... I live in London and do not drive when in the city, so no need).
However I have yet to find an e-book reader as useful as AlReader2, although CoolReader is getting close. All of Android readers are either limited on file-type, have specific storage locations, or look ugly/have no night-mode when reading.
And I'm glad VPlayer has come along, as I was otherwise missing TMPCP or whatever that video player was called, and I didn't want to pay for RockPlayer.

I think it should be any replacement for this application. You can see this for example, but it lacks file transfer.

Doesn't Droid Explorer have a window for viewing the contents of your Android screen? (Screencast plugin)
Missing:
1. the calculator of Wm6.5 and the new WM7, they are great.
2. the way WM6.5 (don't know what WM7 does) groups contacts, the 2 versions of Android I tried do not work well for me.
3. don't like HTC Sync it is too unstable and has too many requirements (I had to setup an XP disk just to load my contacts and it was painful), prefer Active Sync it works on any OS
4. battery drain for WM is about 5% overnight with the 2 Android builds it was close to 60%, simply unacceptable.
5. flipping only 1h2m on the darn clock every time you look at it, Android starts from 12:00 and goes to 23:59 that drives me crazy
6. versions of Android that are out seem to be too unstable for my taste and the last one completely crashed my HD2 and had to reinstall radio and rom and had a hard time doing it. Now I am back to stock radio/rom of WM6.5 until everything on an Android build is stable.
On the other hand
1. locking out WAP was easier on Android
2. miss the digital clocks of Android
3. setup was easier on Android
4. the message balloons were easier to see

Yeah Right !!!, thats the last Explorer i'll use in my ppc
lol, it actually looks promising. I have Opera on my Diamond and it crashes a lot especially when rotating. And it causes Manila to crash too when you close Opera.
So maybe this can be a good thing.
MAYBE being the keyword there.
I've read some reviews about the new IE6 for WM6 and i consider Opera offers a better usability and modern user interface, but may be MS bring us finally a decent Browser
Some of the cool features available with Internet Explorer Mobile 6 are:

[/QUOTE]
Does this mean that PIE will finally be able to play Flash content (i.e. Youtube)? If I can use this to get rid of Skyfire, I will be a happy man!
I'll wait and see. Microsoft promised alot over the years, but didn't actually deliver most of the time.
Hope they prove me wrong though. Until then, i'll keep my Opera 9.
Any chance of riping this out of the emulator and making a cab for all us? It's something that is beyond my skill or I would give it a shot.

working on that. dont know yet if it has to be cooked in. also, there are no 320x240 emulator images available. that probably wont matter.
edit: ok there is 320x240 available. its 5.2.20757 AKU 1.4.0. nothing new here.
downloaded and tried it. it was slow as hell on the emulator.

finally flash on PIE
seems to be very nice so far. that is on my CDMA diamond.
Did I miss something? How is this different from the PIE6 that's in the DFT rom I've been using since Septemeber?
What gets me is that the WM team are saying it won't be available as a download or upgrade because "the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices".
Excuse me? Why then can others like OPera offer the same (or even better) on existing AND older devices?
It's a joke!
because they have so bad programmers who can´t manage that on slower cpus
Its like xp and vista, if you want vista to run you need to double or quadruble your RAM only because of some glassy windows. They are so incompetent. it is lousy programming: if its to slow, buy another faster cpu !
Is there a cab available for download yet then?

I guess bluemetal has a point in here although that is not the whole story. You see, the only way for these clowns to make money on mobile software is by selling it to device manufacturers, so if they are going to continue making software for mobile devices they have to make absolutely certain that the public thinks that there will be no chance in hell of getting "prettier" software on their older devices. By doing so, they push the sale of newer devices, and indirectly their new OS' to the public. To make things even more convincing, they release these ridiculous statements about how the devices are not powerful enough to handle it. I mean, why do you think that they have not offered upgrades to older phones (WM2003 to WM5 or WM5 to WM6)? It certainly is possible to do that (says a guy who has had a Blue Angel since early 2005 running an OS version that most new phones still don't have). Bluemetal's statement needs a small correction, it isn't that their programmers are bad (at least not all of them), but the code is written like that on purpose. Can the code be cleaned up for it to run better, faster, and in older devices? Hell Yes!!! Do they want to? F&^k No!!!!! (it is bad for business...
I can't seem to get the emulator to connect to the Internet. I've gone into File->Configure and selected my network card on the Networks tab, and the emulator appears to connect fine (icon in taskbar shows a connection, and then prompts me to choose "connects to Work or The Internet," as expected). But when I go into IE6, I can't get any pages to load. Just a "no DNS found" error each time. Is there some other setting I need to tweak somewhere?

looks really awesome.
One clarification: does this repair the files too?
This is really going to get my service provider jump to the roof.
Works great, First used v1.3 on my diamond, this was not usable (crashes)
but 1.4 works like a charm.
btw also tested on a Omnia (WQVGA and this also works)
I got the following error
Error:System.Net.Sockets.Socket
I am trying to use astraweb.
Thanks
Never mind it was because it was a secure server
normal one works fine

Well it is still a mobile phone, not a desktop pc. Increasing the number of simultaneous connections, will increase the number of processor threads. There are limitions to the number of threads that can be run on windows mobile. But who knows, the new chipsets are getting faster and new versions of windows mobile are coming out. For now 4 connections are enough to get the max speed for most mobile connections out there (3G, HSDPA).

It should work just fine with .net framework 3.5.
4 connections ... 6 must be better or 8 max... For wifi connections around the city and slows NNTP servers.
I have been looking for this type of application for a couple of years now. Works great on my pro, and I love it. Integration with a search engine would be downright perfection. Either way thank you kindly for the app.

I can't seem to find a GPS program that has every feature I'd want on it. I hear a lot of people talking about TomTom, or Igo8, or a few others, but it seems like there are one or two important things that each one lacks, for me personally. So, here's my GPS snob wish list:
compatible with Xperia (duh)
US Maps
Ability to download international maps for traveling
real time traffic updates, with ability to route around traffic, if possible
voice navigation, turn by turn directions
ability to reroute in case of wrong turn (fairly standard now, i know)
Ability to get address from contacts
FYI, i used "Mapopolis" on my Loox T830, but it seems that they have gone out of business, and though i still have the maps, i can't find the reinstall package, and even if i could, i've heard reports that it runs very slowly on wm 6.1 . I liked everything about it, except now the maps aren't updated and I don't think it did traffic updates.
anyway, if someone knows of some software that fits the bill, please let me know.
Ian
Let me add "fast" to your list.
I've got a X1i with "MyWayfinder" pre-installed. This software sucks soooo much, it's unbelieveable that it is not labeled as an alpha-Version. It needs minutes to start up, to find GPS-Sat's and crashes always.
Then there was T-Mobile Navigate, which I couldn't test because the map data costs you money. Pay-per-route, if you wish.
Why didn't you like Tom Tom Navigator 7 again?
To my knowledge it has every feature you want.
I'm currently using it and I'm really happy with the way it works.
Does the Tom Tom Plus service work with v. 7? The traffic feature seems to be part of the "plus" feature set, and they only show version 6. Speaking of which, is there any tangible bennefit to going with 7 instead of version 6?
The only other thing is that i didn't see where I could download maps for other countries, it is almost like they have two completely different packages...EITHER US/Canada OR everything else, but not both. I could be wrong though.
You're right though, TT does seem like the best option. I probably just need to decide whether to go with version 6 or 7.
Input?
Yes, the TomTom plus service works with version 7. You only need a valid account.
I didn't actually test the version 6 on the Xperia (I only had it on my P1 (symbian os)) but I know that version 7 will work on X1's WVGA screen without a problem (because I have it).
Other than that there aren't many changes between the two versions. The new features that I could spot was the "map correction" feature, you can change your car symbol (that's helpful ), you can have quick links on the nav screen...and it works faster that version 6. But then again that might be just because the P1 had 218Mhz )
You can buy individual maps for countries or for regions if you want. I only had Western Europe, so I don't know how it behaves when you have to change regions (if it does it automatically or not). Even so...given that a flight from US/Canada to Europe takes umm...6-10hrs depending on your location you have the time to go into Manage Maps and switch to your new map.
[edit]
Oh...and there's another new feature : "lane guidance" so that you know on which side of the road you should be driving )

2nd that, really happy with Garmin
I can tell you for a fact that tomtom7 works in the United States with the Xperia X1. It has turn by turn navigation all the way down to live traffic updates.
Basically all the features that you called for in your original post. The new version of tomtom 7.xxxx something 96 supports geotagging also. I havent stayed with that version because i was having some tomtom plus account issues which were weird. So i stuck with TOMTOM 7.910.9185
I saw TT6 on ebay for $40 or so, with dvd of all U.S. maps...i'll let you know what I think, thanks for all the suggestions.
so.....
I installed TTN6 on my xperia (rev 2), then did a soft reset after installation. All it can do is crash. So far, I'm not too pleased with it.

Can I use Garmin Mobile XT with another microSDHC also? I have a 16GB card in my X1 and I do not want to exchange the cards to be able to navigate..
There's only one problem I can't seem to solve with TT7 and X1....
I got the SW up and running, including 1 downloaded city.
But, I can't get the maps I've bought onto the phone, there's no way I've found that makes TomTom Home recognize my X1 and connect to it..
If anyone has a fix for this, like e.g. making the X1 'present itself' to TT Home as some known HTC device etc, I'd be very happy to know of it.
Not warez question this one, I've bought and paid for the maps, and if the SW were availiable for me I'd gladly pay for that too!
Have asked Tomtom about this a number of times, but always got the same reply. "device not supported"...
You have to install TT7 to the memory card and use a card reader, then it should work.

That's wrong, whilst TomTom refuse to support the X1 it does work.
Now to complicate this a bit .. what about if I add geocaching into the basket ? Garmin XT is clearly oriented on car.
You should try Navitel (3.2.5+).
Lots of free maps and other stuff, navi is very cool, light, fast.

I know its not a paid app but I'd take a look at www.amazegps.com. It has everything you are looking for. Its free and downloads the maps from the internet. One drawback is it is less intuitive on the address input and a little unstable when using other programs. Not too bad for free though.
TomTom....I love it.
I have been using Copilot Live 8 for almost a month now and i like it. Plus it was only 34.99 for the US and CA maps.
I am using Garmin Mobile XT Version 4.10.00wp and I love it. It works in portrait and landscape mode on my Verizon HTC Touch Pro 2. One of the nicest features is the real-time traffic. When I used TomTom Navigator this was a feature that you needed to pay for.
I have used the following GPS software:
TomTom Navigator
iGuidance
Navngo iGo 8
Garmin Mobile XT
GPSTuner
AmazeGPS
TomTom is nice because its a super easy to use interface, just like the TomTom GPS units themselves.
iGuidance is nice because it features text to speech (it will say turn left onto king street instead of just turn left.) The one major complaint I have is the UI looks like it was made by a child and keyboard is horrible.
iGo8 is visually stunning (featured 3D buildings and superb graphics) but a bit more complicated to do simple things like entering in a destination or finding a poi. I got frustrated with iGo8 very quickly.
GPS Tuner was nothing but buggy for me...
Garmin's Mobile XT is in my opinion the way to go for simplicity, style, and performance. The traffic feature is a huge plus, and like the TomTom's UI it is super easy to use. The onscreen keyboard is big enough so if you mount the phone in a cradle, you wont need to take it out to type in a destination.
Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to PM me.
- Cheers
Ive been using IGO8 and i cant really see it getting much better than that.. It runs flawlessly on my tp2 with zero lag whatsoever... I would recommend this to anyone..
I'm all about CoPilot Live 8. As was stated before, it's only $34.99 and is full-featured. I was going to upgrade my iNav license, but after trying out CP8, I will stay with it.

Before I get my TP2 I was using Garmin Nuvi, After I bought Touch Pro2, I start to use NavTel. It was fine but limited for 14 days then they asked about 10 USD/month. So I changed my mind and turn back to Garmin. I bought Garmin XT. It works for me really well. Voice Prompt, 2D and 3D navigation maps, fast, Traffic and weather services. It is really good software. Only think about it If you need a bigger sd card you need to copy, paste and re unlock the software and maps in the new card.
But since you have the original card, It is Legal.
i love igo8... it looks amazing

Sprint Navigation on the TP2 is free
With the TP2 on Sprint, it comes with free Sprint Navigation. a bit laggy, but not bad for $0.
I might be just stupid, but I've been trying to get Copilot Live 8 working on my TP2 for about a week now. I bought a 16GB SD card for the main purpose of storing the app and the whole North American map on it. I installed the App and activated it on my phone and downloaded the map via CoPilot Central, but it won't let me transfer it (the button is grayed out). The only thing that I can think of why it doesn't let me transfer is that CPCentral shows me only having 208MB free on my device, when the map is 1.01GB. How can I get it to see the SD card? I found the map files on my PC. Could I just copy them into the SD card? If so, where? I'm seeing something in Program Files and in the root of the card, but I'm not sure.
Anyone who's gotten this working, how did you do it?
Hi All
I want to purchase a GPS software for the Desire that does not need a data connection. I have read some reviews on the following Copilot live, Navigon, Sygic, however I am undecided which one works best for Froyo 2.2.
From the screenshots and specs, Navigon seems to be the best option although more pricy, however lots of people here seem to prefer CoPilot Live.
Anyone has good experience with these packages?
BTW I need it mainly for mainland Europe since I live in Belgium
Thanks for your opinions.
I use Copilot and I find it excellent. Serves me well in the UK, and was exceptional when I drove from the UK down to Spain - it's very cheap too for what it is.
I did download the 30 trial of Navigon as well, and whilst it seemed perfectly fine, it didn't seem to be as fully featured as Copilot.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave for your reply. Most prob I will download the 30 day trial for Navigon and see how it goes.
I have tried both Navigon and Copilot.
Using Copilot now, and likes it very much...
Make sure you get Copilot 8.2 as 8.1 doesn't work on 2.1.
I have Copilot 8.2 on Froyo and works perfectly well. Love it.
i love sygic...the last 8.14 version runs faster and smoother, and choose the best routes.
I was facing the same issue too. I just recently got my Desire and it came with 2.2 Froyo. I used to use IGo on my Treo Pro and I liked it.
I picked up the Navigon program and I was blown off my feet when I used it. It is absolutely amazing on the Desire. I had a trial version of Copilot and didnt like it in comparison.
What I like about Navigon is that it is a no brainer to use and the 3d rendering and driving is fantastic.
I think you cant go wrong with it.
Sygic doesnt works with android 2.2 .
actually sygic does work with 2.2

Perfectly working...
+1 for Sygic from me too.... Runs smoothly on Desire
+1 for Navigon
no problems...find sat very fast and the Graphics are very good and smooth
and it have Navtec cards
edit: maybe you make a poll in the thread
with kind regards..Alex
I'd say Sygic but everyone will say that his GPS app is also good so...try to look for trials and test them for a week.
At the end I went for Copilot since the feedback I got was more pro CoPilot. I have not tested it extensively yet, however I am quite happy with it
Copilot is great, but if you want to use it in your car with the sound going through the headphone socket into your stereo, you will find that the volume is way too low especially if you wanted to listen to the Desire's music at the same time.
Having said that, if you just want to use it as a standalone unit, it is loud enough, despite the Desire's speaker in other applications (including the speakerphone) being dismal!
Sygic blows.
3d view feels like 2fps, navigation made some horrible mistakes.
I'm using Navigon now but i'm not a fan of the handling.
Hi,
What about traffic information?
In TomTom, there is a strip to the right hand side indicating if there are problems on the route, whereas in CoPilot there isn't, and to be honest I can't see how the traffic on CoPilot works at all.
How does traffic work on Sygic or Navigon? I'm in the UK and there's been a really nice CoPilot traffic update much like what I describe for TomTom but it's only out in the US at the moment, so it's really about how Sygic and Navigon present and use traffic information to you.
Of course, if someone knows how to make CoPilot's traffic work please let me know!
Cheers,
Joe

That's cause of the default ini. In the ini file you can change the FPS to 30FPS making it super smooth.

I'm using Co-Pilot in UK and the live traffic info works quite well, and you can choose to navigate around the blockage. It's a subscription service though - £20 for 12 months, I've been doing a lot of driving the last few months and it's actually been very useful.
Happy with Sygic on froyo
