[Q] How is this possible - Epic 4G General

I have epic and evo, and evo is most of the time in idle (not active) but when
turn on and right next to epic (no wifi turn on) when receiving massages on
epic, the evo picks them up too in same time. This is weird as works not every time but quite offten. How is this possible just wonder.

Network time to improve battery life

Sorry if this has ben posted before but I am at work and can only sneak to use the phone. I am switching to evo 4g and my buddy found out that you can turn network time of and really improve battery life on devices that use sense. Settings-date and time-network time.

What percent improvement has he seen. I use my phone as a watch, so this does not seem like a worth while power management technique for me unless it improves it 10+ %.
Screenshots from System Panel would be appreciated.
I have found that disabling the mobile network data service off unless you are using helps significantly.

Care to elaborate? Or am i not getting the joke! It's early so might have went over my head....
Okay first off, I had an EVO 4G, went and got a Droid X and now want EVO back due to using way too many minutes on Verizon. Went today to get everything switched over and nowhere has an EVO around here. Basically my friend found in the desire forums about disabling network time and he tried it on his nexus one with 2.2 CM6 w/ sense and it significantly helped his battery. My buddy and his buddy with the Evo 4G were both going through about 10% an hour even not using it. The Evo 4G guy texted my friend today and said he unplugged his EVO from the wall at 2pm went to work and didn't play with his phone until 7pm. Still had about 80% battery. Went to bed around 12:30 am with 70% and woke up at 9:45 am with 64% battery. It is worth a try for anyone running sense.
Great story bro.

EC05 - 3G keeps shutting down

Here is a weird one. 3G shuts down after so long. I have full bars, but no 3G. Rebooted once and 3G came back for a time, but then disappeared again.
I think this is caused by sprint on their end.

Odd because it didn't occur with EB13. I am looking at my phone, and 3G is turning on and off.... SIGH.
Actually I'm still on DI18 and this happened to me for the first time today--right before the OTA update was delivered, no 3G and no data connectivity. Yet 4G worked, just not 3G! Then I rebooted and the OTA update was delivered. Wonder if they're related somehow...
It happed on my eb13(at the time) epic, my brothers instinct s30, and my mom's lg rumor touch. Its definently on sprints end.

No matter how much or how I calibrate my battery, it almost always drops to 97% after unplugging. Some times it will stay at 100 and stay at 100 for about an hour. Also, you'll be at say 50% and reboot the phone and be at 12% for 5 hours.

Which Modem are you on?
Do you oc/uv?
Which kernel are you using?
Install spare parts from the market.
Run your phone for 30min-1 hour.
Check the battery usage.

biggest frustration is the visual voicemail. i see a missed call, i see i have voicemail, but when i click "play" on the voicemail it says it can't play the voicemail.
only way to fix it is to power off phone, power on, then the voicemail will play. same problem i had on my old samsung flip phone 3 years ago. promised myself i would never again own a samsung phone but the Epic was the best phone available at the time. sigh.

That fix seems beyond annoying lol. I can understand the frustration behind that although there isn't that much voicemail in the world to be frustarted over unless you almost never answer your phone calls.

while at work (roughly 10 hours a day with commute) i rarely answer my personal phone. unfortunately that's when many people (or services like the comcast setup crew, etc.) call.
i end up rebooting my phone, just for voicemail, at least 4 times a week. i don't know if it's something i did (just running stock Froyo EB13 - rooted with EXT4 file system), an app i installed, etc., but it's odd to me that it happened on my old Samsung flip phone on Verizon and now on my Samsung Epic on Sprint.
ready for the rumoured Gingerbread update to officially drop (actually ready for source to come out so i can finally switch off of the stock firmware - for some reason i've been holding out flashing a custom ROM until gingerbread. probably silly of me, but that's what i've been telling myself).

i've never ever had that problem (knock on wood). Maybe a bad flash or something. try updating your voicemail app and make sure you have 3g when your checking your voicemail.
For the battery issue, nubecoder wrote something that can be implemented into kernels for a fuller more complete charge. I don't know which kernels incorporate this.. i'm currently on bakedsnack and it does have it. battery is superb.
When you have to completely close apps (market) just to get data to connect. Its as if its false 3g -_-

Yes, overall its very handy. If it ever starts to mess up, unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
I am Z.
Expect text messages to keept repeating themselves (generally outgoing) and call drops when starting a call on the Airrave then moving out of it's range.

I have no text probs as mentioned, but I do have trouble with latentcy. When I'm torrenting, even though I have my airave attached as an arm of the network rather than running all the traffic through it, I get a hard 3 second delay both hearing voice and them hearing m only while torrenting.
If I have any weird trouble with the phone, like delay, not getting calls, or not hearing the other end of the line, I do unplug my airave.
I've been to the sprint store twice. For weird voice clarity issues that turned out to be the airave.

Yea, prepare to be thoroughly annoyed. Get ready for random times where you cannot call land lines but can call mobile phones. Sometimes text messaging will be all messed up. You will probably notice weird problems if you flash roms a lot that no one else is reporting. It has to do with the airrave. Also you will lose calls/data if you move out of airrave coverage.
Overall, its a neat gadget but RIDICULOUSLY annoying sometimes.
just forget about the air rave and enable Google voice integration and turn on airplane mode and then you can call and text over wifi using the Google voice app.

They can be a bit of a pain if you have slow internet. Just don't use it as a router like they say in the manual. Hang it off of your network. I love mine as I had no reception in my bedroom of my apartment. Saved my ass and I didn't have to pay for it.

Thanks everyone foe the replies. I always appreciate everyone's feedback out here. I use Google voice now to eliminate the whole sprint vvm issues on CM, but I guess I didn't realize I could make my calls over wifi, although it makes sense that I would be able too?! How would I set that up? I couldn't find any options for it...
Edit: additional question...is it a fairly easy transition going in and out of wifi, to receive calls on normal service when I leave my wifi area?

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^. It does work pretty well but it seems whenever they update the software they neglect to send a reset signal nor inform you o the update. So there may be random times when you will not get calls because they go diret to voicemail or you won't be able to dial out without resetting the Airave. This has been only 4 times in 2 years so that is not bad. Your 3G speeds will be awesome though...about 1.5Mbs consistently.
I haven't had any of the reported problems with ours. We have it connected to our ATT uverse wireless router.

Thats because it's using your Internet to get out... Just bottlenecks your connection really - better off staying on WiFi.
Personally, for all the issues mentioned in this thread I sent mine back. It did more harm than good. Wound up ditching Sprint altogether at the end of the day anyway.
To the guy thats torrenting (sorry forgot who said that) the Airrave is opening an IPSEC tunnel back to a Sprint server. If you QoS the IPSEC traffic (UDP 500 and/or 4500 depending on how your set up) and rate limit your torrent traffic to about 90% of your max bandwidth you'll probably clean up the voice a bit. Might be worth checking the CPU utilization in your router too to make sure that's not causing some of the latency.
In general, for people that can't get it working at all behind their existing networks, make sure you have IPSEC passthrough enabled (some routers may call it NAT-T or something like that). Some older/cheaper routers won't support IPSEC passthrough at all, but those are few and far between these days.

All of the above! Especially with the text message issue. When I first got it I was texting the wife she was home it repeated everything I said over 30 times each LOL. I think it was Kenny that mentioned to unplug the airrave then plug it back in. The worst part is having NO signal and your battery dies.

I've liked having mine. I put it on the 2d floor and get 5-6 bars on each floor and about 4-5 in the basement. No issues except, every once in a while it goes off line (maybe an update IDK), and you have to unplug and replug it back to reset it. I notice this when I start getting only 2-3 bars upstairs and 2 downstairs.
I hate my Airave.....
I am on the second one. It is hooked up to 10MB internet service & still cuts out during phone calls & has a noticable delay between the two halves of the coversation. My Vonage phone works great plugged into the same router as the Airave. Now I just leave it unplugged full time, I really need to send it back I guess. It's not costing anything so no harm done.
Also more than half the time it does not connect to my wife's stock Evo Shift.
For me this unit is a waste of space.

what makes this optimizer special? My EVO will automatically toggle my 3g/4g/wifi already. I just leave on all of my radios...when I get home my wifi turns on when I leave wifi turns off and 3g comes back on....and when im in a 4g area my 4g automatically turn on.
So I dont get what makes this any different?
I believe it will automatically turn your radios On only when you have service available. Ie. when you enter a known 4G area the phone will recognize it and will automatically turn your 4G radio on. No need for you to have it on all day scanning and wasting battery. same goes for Wifi connections.
It will be interesting to see it work. I'm willing to try it. Sprint is pushing this service to most if not all of their smart phones.

It is sprint's idea to try and offload as many users from their network as possible. Which if it automatically selected the best network. IE wiFi or WiMax then they are not hammering their network as hard.

I hope they update android and/or sense.....I know they didnt state that in the update notes but back in January when we got 2.3.5 that wasnt in the notes either.
So I'm hoping for a surprise to hold me over until my upgrade in November
I would suspect that it only has the sprint optimizer, which really is just a way to offload consumption on their cell towers..
