I finally got my hands on a NS just a few minutes ago. Given, it was handcuffed to an alarm and a usb charger, and completely not fun to use this way. The camera.apk crashed several times. The market was less than responsive. I figured this was a badly beat up device, and am prolly right, being at a bestbuy store.
The thing is, when it was announced, I was going to buy, sight unseen. Then I read it was really a galaxy S with not much different, possible gps issues, etc - you've all heard this before.
Now, don't go crazy thinking I'm about to flaunt and rave about a wp7 device. No sir, not me. I'm a android nut to the bone. My Nexus One is just going to have to make do a little longer until the multi-core devices come out....
unless....
can someone motivate me as to why i might replace my N1 with a NS ? please, I'm -NOT- looking for a flamewar, or to bash any device. I think the S is badass, but just not badass enough to toss the N1 yet.
Convince me ? Flame me ? whatever, i want to hear why you switched from a N1.
There are plenty of threads about the device for you to make an informed decision. I suggest reading and deciding for yourself instead of creating another one of these threads.
I have a Nexus One.
I sold a G2 Friday.
Bought the Nexus S Saturday.
I found I didnt need a keyboard (I use Swype) and the G2 didnt seem to be
any faster than the N1.
I do like both the N1 and the NS.
The GPS/maps works fine on the NS, used it today.
I wouldnt pay $529 for an NS but if you are off contract its a great phone for $199.

My first impressiong of the NS was...."wtf is this ****" at best buy. It was tied up as well, and for whatever reason it wasn't turning on, felt cheap.
That was about a week ago. Today I headed out to best buy again, apparently the first time around there was no battery in it. I felt better about, and ended picking up for my papa dukes.
I've been ****ting on the NS all week after my first encounter. After using it for a few hours setting it up, holding it. It feels reall really nice in the hand. The N1 feels more "solid" but there's no form to it, it feels like holding a piece of aluminum stock down at the metal yard. The NS feels much more organic. The plastic allows it to feel warm.
Screen - Takes a huge **** on the N1 screen. The size combined with the extra saturation, it's no comparison. Touch screen in about 3 - 4 million times better than the N1. The screen wrapped with a black housing gives the phone a certain "presence" that makes the n1 seem feeble.
Software wise - stock android is trash, always has been. CM 6 runns much smoother than 2.3, no question abuot it.
4" SUPER AMOLED screen.
Game over.
I have a nexus one and I picked up the nexus s a couple of days ago.
The biggest difference for me is the fantastic screen. It's significantly better than the nexus one screen. That alone is worth the upgrade for me.
Speed wise, the nexus s isn't much faster than a nexus one running the aosp gingerbread roms, so I wouldn't buy a nexus s expecting it to be faster.
My reply will sound like everyone else's. This is a flagship phone, and it shows. Spec wise, its comparable to the N1. Experience wise, the N1 can't compare.
2.3 is very streamline. Its smooth. It flows. The 4" SAMOLED screen is incredible. The colors are vivid, the transitions are smooth, and its response is unmatched. Its so responsive, it sometimes presses the buttons before i do!
I have an N1 and I was a skeptic as well, until i turned it on and used it for a day. You simply cannot compare the two. Nexus S all day.

This is really all you need to know. I also came from an N1 and loved the amoled screen on there; to put it simply, the Samoled screen on the NS makes the N1 screen look like ****. I didn't think it could really be all that much better but it really is, also the touch sensor and oleophobic coating are fantastic.
I showed my 5 coworkers, who all have iphone4's, my NS yesterday and they all said the exact same thing "that screen is gorgeous."
No LED notification light, and no trackpad/trackball. These are two major sell points for me. So much so I may end up with a MyTouch 4G
if i have anything from N1, Desire, Desire HD, Galaxy S, i wouldnt trade or sell it for Nexsus S.
not that NS isnt better than N1 or Desire, its just FOR ME, the LG star "optimus 2x " or whatever its going to be called coming by Feb . thats like 2 months only from now. duel core processor with Tegra 2 from Nvidia gpu for assuming gpu performance. and on top of that a super amoled screen as well as 8M camera " i think ? "
so it doesn't make sense for me to spend an X ammount TODAY on an adroid phone when a new much better one coming in like exactly 2 months.
NOW, the NS is a developers phone. what does that mean for you that all developers will be baising their games on the Nexus S. thats the standard. for gaming. it will be on Nexus S. much like how games standards was Nexus 1. what does that mean to you is until the next developers phone comes out, ALL the new games for example or apps will run as defult on NS.
that not to say it wont run better on Tegra 2 in the LG phone for example, just like how games runs better on Galaxy S over the Nexus 1.
i think you should stick with your Nexus 1 as well.

No LED notification light? No problem. NoLED turns on the screen and displays an icon depending on what kind of notification you have (new e-mail, new text, etc). Since it's SAMOLED, the black uses little to no power so it isn't a battery drain.
No trackpad/touchball? I barely used mine on my G1. I don't miss it on my Verizon Fascinate either. Not sure why people want that so badly that it influences their decision on getting a phone or not...

This was my same thought when I picked up the NS, I needed to have a notification light and thankfully the NoLed app makes the lack of trackball notifications irrelevant now. NoLed works great and looks awesome too and doesn't have any noticeable affect on battery.

To the OP, I will probably be returning the Nexus S before the 30 day return policy is up and sticking with the Nexus One as well.
Benefits of Nexus S:
1. SuperAMOLED (Soooo beautiful... 1 of 2 things that kills the Nexus One for me)
2. 4' screen (Personal opinion but I actually like the compactness of the Nexus One's design... I know I'm weird)
3. NFC (Not around yet, wont be for awhile)
4. True multitouch for gaming (I use a wiimote to play emulators so I don't care about multitouch gaming)
5. Better Speaker (I don't blast music through my phones speaker. If Im at home I use my computer, if I'm in the car I use the car speakers, if Im out an about I'll use some earphones)
6. Android updates developed w/ Nexus S in mind(Long as the N1 gets updates as well I'm ok w/ sharing the love)
7. Hummingbird processor (I don't notice any lag on my stock Nexus One)
8. More app storage space (I always keep my Nexus One at 75-80% free)
9. Battery life (2nd thing that kills the Nexus One... but I have a spare battery so my N1 lasts all day)
These are some great benefits for 90% of people to be worth upgrading for. Just that I'm one of the weird 10%
Another option I've been thinking of is actually getting the Samsung Galaxy Tablet to completely replace my Nexus One (with 3g enabled skype app) and Netbook (with a bluetooth keyboard) for $40/mo with T-mobile this doesn't seem like a terrible idea if I find a cool looking European shoulder bag that I wouldn't mind taking with me everywhere to have the tablet with me at all times like a phone

cool, and thanks to all the others that replied. i like the list approach, it's how i usually do stuff....
i didn't get to try out the speaker, there was crap super glued to the phone @ the store. :-(
the screen was very very very bright and impressive. almost a G1 to N1 comparison side by side.
thankfully, folks didn't label me as trolling and have seen a similar take before. i think i'll stick with the n1 a little longer given the points in this thread. maybe february i'll buy, or maybe i'll find a NS on craigslist for 1/2 price, who knows. i'm pretty partial to my N1 for now.

The N1 had so much potential, but the user experience was greatly impacted (negatively) by the wonky touchscreen behavior (imho). It was also unusable outdoors, here in sunny southern CA.

I played around with the HTC Incredible for a few minutes today.
- I did not like the look and feel (ID) of the Incredible nearly as much as I thought I would. It looked and felt cheaper than the N1. The shape is boring and the all glass/shiny front does not look good. I am much more pleased with the look and feel of the N1.
- The software shortcut buttons (back/menu/home/search) work quite a bit better on the Incredible compared to the N1 with less chance of an unsuccessful press.
- I didn't notice a huge difference in the touchscreens like I had read about. I didn't try the multitouch test.
- Scrolling between home screens didn't seem as fast as my N1, but I am running a custom ROM and kernel on the N1.
- I like the trackball on the N1 a lot more than the optical sensor on the Incredible. It wasn't very smooth rubbing your finger over the optical sensor. The interface between the sensor and the phone casing was a little rough. The trackball is definitely smoother.
Overall I am happy having an N1 and, if it ever existed, I have lost all Incredible envy.
I'm in Canada so I'll most likely never see one of these guys.

I felt the exact same when I looked at it, in fact, I hated the optical track pad also, n1 scrolled wayyyyy faster with it, and pushint it in is hard on the incredible, but Still I welcome it to the family
I love the trackball. I don't know why so many don't like it. optical track pad just seems like it would be a pain.
I found a trick for the nexus track ball, if you just give it a super hard swipe, it will go clear across an entire sentence me text in one swoop. I see people complain its too slow but its not if you give it a really fast swipe.
I just played with the incredible this morning. first thought is the track pad is horrible compared to the track ball. no matter how fast I swipe my finger, it only moves the cursor a few letters. the nexus track ball will move an entire sentence, like 7 words, if you give it one fast swipe.
the incredible is very light weight, but it just feels plasticky compared to the nexus. the nexus feels like a high quality appliance to me, no contest imo.
the speed of the OS felt pretty much the same. I'm running stock ROM on my nexus, not yet rooted (but I will soon enough!).
overall I can't believe anyone would even feel remotely bad about having the incredible released with slightly better specs, the nexus seems like the better phone to me in every way. the one thing I would like is the dual led flash. I don't care about the 8 gb memory or 8 mp camera one bit. but the extra flash would be nice for those random times when you need that photo in a bar or something, cause the nexus single led isn't very good.
ill take the dual mics over the dual flash though

The only people who feel bad about the Incredible being slightly better are the whiners.
IE the people who weren't happy with the Nexus One even without any other similar device having been announced yet.
NO PHONE is perfect.
Case in point: The Incredible, despite having slightly better hardware, feels cheap and is ugly / boring.
How about we wait until FroYo gets (leaked) and we have it first?

I really wanted to disagree with that post to not seem like an N1 fanboy, but I agree.. the Incredible is a giant plastic brick, we will get updates first, and the hardware is only slightly upgraded. It is Incredible, but if you have a Nexus.. its not worth switching over to.
If the Incredible does get developer support, and Froyo gets ported.. then.. um.. maybe we should be worried then. What if Froyo is released quickly for it? We won't have much to brag about but developer support, and.. sexiness? And then if it gets developer support, as much as we have, then it will really be a problem. They may have took root security measures like on the Desire and Legend though, so it may not even matter.
that's what I'm saying, the nexus is such a better built phone that I don't care if the incredible has a 5 gHz CPU, I'd always take the nexus every time.

well I was being half sarcastic, but not totally to be honest. sit a nexus next to an incredible and tell me "pick on for free and It's yours, but only one" and I would take the nexus every time no question.
The Nexus One is the first phone I've ever owned that I have no envy of any future phones. It fulfills every single need I have and I can see myself using it beyond 2 years. It's THAT good.
Yup. I agree with above poster. I've never had the latest and greatest and nothing available better. And there won't be for a while, in Canada. I am by no means regretting my purchase and am absolutely in love with the Nexus One. I haven't put it down since I got it 2 and a half weeks ago.
If you have one, love it. If not, then sell it and get yourself an Incredible. Then regret switching.

I played with an Incredible at a verizon store yesterday. It does seem thinner and snappier.
Still prefer the stock UI.
Biggest sense plus is the exchange server support.

have you tried that GSM Auto (PRL) setting in the other thread? it really seems to work. i have had HORRIBLE battery life for the last month. my battery would die in about 5 hours or maybe 6. so far with this new setting, i am at 4 hours and still at 85%. its made a huge difference so far. but i'm still testing to really know.
battery life is not _horrible_ for me, but it's not great either.
i do have the extended 2800 mAh battery from SEIDO, and i manage to get 3 days out of it. now if this were the performance with the stock battery, i would be a happy camper.
Im selling my n1 for this and just wanna here some feedback on people that have had the nexus one and why the vibrant is the better choice for them....

I just got a Samsung a hour ago.. I have a Nexus One now with 2.2 on it.
After 1 hour.. My review..
The usb charging port for the Samsung is on the top of the phone.. Stupid because when you use it in the car the cable needs to reach the top and loop around..
It has 16GB internal and comes with a 2GB microSD card..
It does not seem any faster than the Nexus One, and the Nexus one has the roller ball which I actually use and the Samsung has no hardware buttons on the front..
Camera seems the same, pictures look close to me..
I am suprised how much better the bigger screen looks, I did not think it would be noticable but everything just looks better bigger!!!..
ONE REALLY big thing though... The antenna on the Samsung works better somehow. The Nexus One has never been 3G at my office and the Samsung has full bars on 3G. The Nexus One is showing 3 bars on Edge.. ( I flashed a few days ago to the 2.2 radio, same signal before flash)
So, after 1 hour the I am not sure which is better.. My N1 is pretty beat up and 7 months old (got it jan 5th) but I need 2.2 on the Samsung to actually like using it..

Market wont download anything yet though, fails everytime. Sucks, but other than that... also, I am itching to uninstall bloat on it, grr

This may not be a bad thing for everyone though. Would actually work well for me since it stays in my cupholder and I just use BT. Granted, with my G1, it's upside down but CM's orientation hack makes the screen right-side up (not sure if the Vibrant has that incorporated).
Otherwise, yes, the port on top is somewhat odd.
someone will come out with a 90 degree angled usb connection end - if there's not one out there already

I have been playing around with mine for about 3 hours now and i have to agreee with every thing you said and it is pretty much dead on. My reception to is better on the vibrant than the N1 don't know why it just is. I will hold onto my N1 before selling it and play with the SV more to get a "feel" for it
I wish they would have given you a better way to take a picture or activate the shutter, and I wish there was a better way to "wake" the phone up instead of the side button or a double click of the side button.
Also I wanted to comment on the build of the phone I don't think the weight of this phone gives it a "cheap" feel to it I prefer how light it is compared to my N1 and it feels good in my hand.

Had my N1 since Jan 5th as well and have LOVED it. Rooted immediately, ran Modaco's Desire Sense port for a while before moving back to CM. Got my Vibrant Monday (yes, really). Rooted Tuesday. Ran Modaco's script to rearrange the internal memory / apps configuration and made the Vibrant go from fast to BLAZING. TouchWiz not bad, but not overly impressed with Samsung's widgets. Some are good, some are a little finicky. Sense nailed widgets much better but Samsung's are decent and better than nothing.
Comparatively, N1 was snappier out of the box as no UI overlay. However with some modding this phone will be on par or perhaps outperform N1 (I say that sensitively as N1 has an extremely special place in my heart . Samsung's Hummingbird processor is phenomenal and outperforms N1 on side-by-side 3d rendering test (YouTube Nexus 1 Galaxy S Quake to see). Vibrant's SuperAmoled Screen is what makes this phone truly special-- it's nothing short of incredible and makes N1's screen seem small and dim in comparison. ESPECIALLY in sunlight- N1 was basically unusable, this thing is nearly un-impacted. Watch the preloaded Avatar on it-- it's just gorgeous. The size and weight are beautiful, the super-light weight does make it almost feel a hair toy-ish but as soon as you touch the silky-smooth screen that feeling disappears. I really was looking for a step up in screen size from N1 and this delivers without the almost-too-big feeling of Evo or HD2.
Cons- miss the trackball for precise in-text navigation and notification alerts. But there's already talk of a mod to flash the capacitive buttons on the bottom for notifications- this will help, especially as there's no LED or anything else to visually alert for notifications. . As previously mentioned, side-mounted lock / unlock button is kind of annoying and will take some getting used to. You can only partially customize TouchWiz's bottom static shortcut dock. Of course, installing ADW Launcher or Launcher Pro will solve that and completely hide TouchWiz but you then lose ability to use Samsung's proprietary widgets, again some of which are actually nice. Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just traded in my Nexus One yesterday and figured I'd revive this instead of starting a new thread. Had it for a full day, and here's what I think about it so far. (I will try to revive this at a month in, then six months in, then a year in if I keep it that long.)
+ It's much lighter, but very plasticky. I loved the aluminum and heft of the N1, but all of the plastic is made up in spades by it's sleek, smooth design. It's a beautiful device.
+ 3G on the Vibrant is much more consistent than it ever was with the N1.
- I really miss my LED notifications. NoLED is alright, but not as dependable. (It doesn't work with Go SMS popups.)
+ The screen is AWESOME. It's much brighter and more color-accurate, though not by a terrible amount. I absolutely love the size of it.
+ 16GB...internal storage!!! I can not only fit all of my music without a SD card, but can fit my ENTIRE LIBRARY with ANOTHER 16GB card! AMAZING!
+ It's a really fast phone.
+ It's a really fast phone.
+ With Nero 4.1/Voodoo, it's a really fast phone.
+ Multitouch actually works well, since I can use Swype like a normal keyboard and rotate on Google Maps (which is FRIGGIN SWEET)
- No flash is a bit of a letdown.
+ Camera makes up for it; it's quite good. Haven't tried recording with it yet, though.
- GPS is a BIG letdown, though triangulation is getting me by.
+ I thought I would hate Touchwiz, and I found out I (sort of) do. I hate the launcher, but it's apps are REALLY good. For example,
+ The music app is solid, and has an equalizer!
+ Alarm app is full-featured (has a timer, stopwatch, etc.)
+ Daily briefing could be useful
+ Desk mode is nice
+ Galaxy Tab email is really nice, though it doesn't provide any better features over the stock email app.
The one disadvantage...
- Wow, there is Engrish EVERYWHERE
- Proprietary drivers suck, but that's tolerable
- Not as straightforward to unlock at the firmware level, but that's tolerable too.
- Will be last to get official updates, but most of us run rooted/modified stuff, so that point is moot. A Gingerbread port is in the works and there are plenty of great Froyo ROMs for the device right now. (Nero 4.1 is froyo-based, and there is an unofficial, "stock" Froyo-based ROM floating around that I put on my Dad's Vibrant. He loves it, no issues so far.)
Final word (at this point): Highly recommend. I absolutely loved my Nexus One, as it was easily the best phone I've ever owned. However, this and the Nexus S (for the Google support the Nexus One enjoys) are clearly superior devices.
So I'm sitting at home patiently waiting for the UPS man to come with my new Vibrant. In my pocket is my beloved Nexus One.
I had a chance to play with a vibrant in a Tmo store and really liked it. Seemed speedier than my N1 in almost every aspect and that screen is just gorgeous!
I'd like to hear from any Nexus One users that jumped ship to the Vibrant. Are you happy with your decision? Any issues?
I'll be side by siding these two beasts for the next 14 days (return period). And only one will stay with me. I'd just like to hear some other peoples experiences.
I find the Vibrant better in every regard. The one thing I miss is how speedy development came to the N1 (for obvious reasons). I (and the developers) are more accustom to HTC phones...
BUT, speed, screen, sound, keyboard, I really like everything better.
Some people complain about a GPS issue, that a lot of us do not have.....
You wont have froyo immediately....
I like how solid the N1 feels in my hand....
those are about the only things I can think of.
I sold my rooted nexus one for this.
The good:
Better screen (WOW) you'll see
Better Speaker
Faster Data Pulling (you'll be surprised how good edge is even )
Better widgets (touchwiz is lovely)
The bad:
doesn't open apps as fast as Nexus
Switching from 3g to Edge takes way longer than the nexus
Battery a tiny bit worse than nexus
Feels horrible compared to the nexus build (the vibrant is cheaply built) PLASTIC
going from screen to screen, you will get a slight jerk... not smooth like launcherpro/ADW or 2.2 Froyo default home
Other than that, this phone is lovely and its a keeper. I'm waiting for a replacement battery. maybe the 3500Mah they had for the nexus one.That will also put some weight on it. it's like a feather now.
I too sold my N1. I did for all the aforementioned reasons plus I really like being able to take the phone instore for warranty issues instead of waiting a week or two for htc to get my phone fix it and ship it back.....
The battery specs on the Vibrant seem WAY better than the N1, but I've been seeing some complaints on battery life. Whats the deal with that? Was Samsung overexerting the standby time?
I'll miss froyo, But once it hits the vibrant I assume it will be BLAZING fast with JIT on the hummingbird. Besides the speed, Flash in the browser kinda sucks anyways on N1 (slow!). So going back to 2.1 wont be a huge loss.
I love my nexus, but its had its issues. I'm currently on my 3rd swap out from HTC due to the screen not working and dust under the digitizer. Hoping I have good luck with the vibrant and its GPS issues.
I guess I'll have to wait and see which wins... I plan on keeping both for a couple of weeks before I decide.

I beg to differ.. its user preference, I prefer it being lightweight its a lot different than the G1 whereas it feels like a brick. I don't think its a con whatsoever, doesn't feel cheap at all.. check out the videos where they try and "scratch" and damage it. The phone could take a hit.
Just got the Vibrant today, bought the Nexus on the day it was announced. I'm likely sending the Vibrant back and keeping the Nexus. Here are my first impressions:
1: Unbelievably light and, unfortunately, cheap feeling, particularly the buttons (Vol. and on/off). The build quality of the Nexus One feels like it's in an entirely different league here.
2: Nice screen size though my phone will not display a true white or grey. Instead, everything has a cyan/blue tinge. This actually is my biggest issue with the phone right now. The Nexus gives true whites and greys and, even with the brightness all the way up, no true white or gray on the vibrant. Menus, text, market and web pages show this every time I open them - it's driving me nuts.
3: The music app contains a real to life Equalizer and a number of other sound settings. This is one feature I really love and will miss if I send the phone back. Sound quality is very good, though not through the crap headphones Samsung provides. Here again, the quality of the Nexus headphones are noticeably better.
4: Neither the Compass or the GPS work correctly on my phone making the phone useless until a fix is released for what I actually use it most for - Google Places and voice navigation.
5: The image quality of photo's taken with the camera are very good for a phone. Auto weight balance works perfectly under various light sources. Much better than Nexus in this department, though I do miss the flash - which I used mostly as a flashlight!
6: The size feels a little uncomfortable in the hand compared to the Nexus but that's likely just something I have gotten used to.
7: Battery life seems like it will be much better than Nexus.
Anyway, I know the GPS and Compass will be fixed and perhaps I could get used to the flimsy build quality but the screen is a deal breaker as I expected it to be superior to the Nexus One. It's not. If I had to guess, I suspect Samsung has used some sort of Polarizing film to reduce glare outside in bright light which is resulting in the blue/cyan tinge.
Sold my Nexus and both docks, got a nice chunk if change and got the Vibrant. Its the best phone out right now IMO.

PERSONALLY I don't equate light-weight with cheap...it's very VERY light weight, but it doesn't feel cheaply made to me. The biggest complaint I have about the build quality personally is the "metal" bezel(of course it's plastic). I feel like that will scratch if it's looked at incorrectly. lol. I think this depends on the size of your hands. Going from a Touch Pro2 with a 3.6" screen to a 4.3" on the HD2 I didn't like it. It was hard to text on when trying to reach across the screen...but this 4" screen fit perfectly into my hands. It also makes it feel more like a "phone" and not a "pda". I know the Nexus has a 3.7" screen, but like he said, I think you'd get used to it.
7: Battery life seems like it will be much better than Nexus.
Trust me....depends on what you have running and when you have it running lol. This thing will randomly start apps that you never tell it to start(telenav for example) and they'll run in the background for no reason at all lol. I've had situations where with ZERO use....it just sitting idle....after 8 hrs it used up almost 50% of the battery. Darker(blacker) backgrounds help on battery life too. I tested a live wall paper at 100% brightness for 30 mins and a completely black wallpaper at 100% brightness and there was a 100% increase of battery life drain. 4% after 1 half hour vs 2% after 1 half hour(i actually think the same would apply to the nexus one since it's an amoled screen)

As he stated at the end though, the GPS will soon be fixed(officially that is) by Samsung, and you'll probably have to get used to the feel of it vs the Nexus 1...but I had an opportunity to buy either, and I used both for 1 day, and couldn't put the Vibrant down so I went with it.
Edit: and though not as good as an LED light, because the Vibrant uses SAMOLED the white screens at full brightness are ridiculously bright lol. So if you use one of the screen flash light apps, it'd probably be the brightest...but again, it's not as bright as an LED flash light. But Trust me...it definitely works lol

The screen on the specific Vibrant I received is nowhere near as bright as the Nexus screen, even at full brightness and the cyan/blue tinge is not so subtle. Many are stating that the blue look is normal with OLED's yet neither my Nexus nor my wife's have this problem at all. There is also growing evidence that the Vibrant display is not consistant from phone to phone, with some reporting the blue issue more than others, even when examining four vibrants simultaneously (so this is not just subjective). Thus, don't buy the whole explanation that Samsung added mor blue to counteract future blue degradation over time. I think what those of us with extremely tinged blue screens are experiencing is a quality control issue, plain and simple - perhaps it has something to do with an inconsistency in the SOLED manufacturing process, I don't know. I do know that all OLED's do not have this issue and, apparently, not even all Samsung SOLED Vibrants!
Regarding the "cheap" feel, my volume button rattles when I handle the phone and has no definite "detent" feel. Perhaps mine is unique, but this definitely lends a flimsy feel to the phone, particularly compared to the firm feel of the Nexus buttons. Think I wil return this vibrant and see what a replacement offers as I must have received a dud. To be fair, the Nexus my wife received initially had to be returned due to a quality control issue. I think most of these devices today are at the bleeding edge of manufacturing technology.
I got rid of my 3 week old N1 for the Vibrant, and I have no regrets at all. I'm very much in love with this phone. I think the only major issue with the phone for most is the GPS problems, but Samsung already said they're working on a fix.
Yeah, the phone is very light weight, but as soon as I bought the thick gel case from T-Mo it really did add a great weight to the phone.
I'm a phone whore that switches phones pretty much every time a new phone hits the market, and I've gotta say the Vibrant just might be the best I've ever owned.
I sort of gave up my Nexus One for a Vibrant. My wife wanted my Nexus One because T-Mobile still doesn't have a good phone for photographs (Vibrant included).
I had just gotten her a MT3G Slide, so I trade it back to them for the Vibrant.
So far, the only thing I have to complain about is the lack of a Camera flash, it completely hinders the camera in most lighting situations after 6PM EST, haha.
Also, the body does feel cheaply constructed. The Nexus One had the most solid design of any phone I have ever owned or held in my hand.
I miss my N1, but the Vibrant is a GREAT alternative. I can say I love this phone, and most of that love is coming from the BEAUTIFUL screen.
I had a Nexus, and my wife had a MyTouch. She was wanting to upgrade, so we decided that I would get a Vibrant, and she would get my Nexus. We have since given away the MyTouch.
I have to say, at first, I was LOVING my Vibrant! it was incredible! The screen, and benchmarks spoke for themselves! Heck, I was even able to ditch a couple of mediocre apps for the pre-installed apps!
I've had my Vibrant for...17 days now. I've NEVER had any luck with the GPS, although it is handy for a game called "The Great Land Grab", since I can now buy land in states and countries I've never even been to before! (I bought a piece of land in CHINA!!! WOOT!) I've tried ALL of the fixes posted here at XDA and elsewhere. All of them seemed to help, but then I realized it was mostly a placebo effect. "742 people said this fix worked perfectly! It's gotta fix my GPS! Hey, it only took 17 minutes this time! YAY! It's all better!" Coming from a long line of HTC phones (G1, MyTouch, Nexus), I've come to expect good GPS performance, and I use maps and nav a LOT. (Well, I used to) I'm extremely disappointed in this, to the point that I will never buy another Samsung phone again.
The screen is AMAZING! The picture quality is intense, and it displays video so fluidly! I can't say enough good things about how beautiful it is! The screen difference is .4 inches, but it looks and feels like it's HUGE in comparison. I've never seen a screen on a cell phone that can show as deep black as this. If you set your phone up poroperly, you can have it on, but not be able to tell (ADW.Launcher/black wallpaper/no status bar/no icons/empty dock/dock open - Looks amazing!) It's such a nice display!
The phone SHOULD be WAY faster. the specs make the Nexus look old and dated. Of course, when you're used to touching an app shortcut, and it just HAPPENS, a 2-10 second lag seems like FOREVER! There are some MAJOR design flaws in the Vibrant, such as the 16 gig internal storage. It's a class 6, yes, but it's got VERY serious i/o issues, so almost everything that calls on the resources on it stalls and lags. (You'll see TONS of people who say there's no lag, but most of those people came from a dated phone, like a G1 or MyTouch. It's WAY faster than any of the older generation 1 or generation 2 phones, but it's painfully slow when you're used to the powerhouse known as Nexus. (2 seconds doesn't sound long, until you're trying to show off your phone, and you feel the need to explain that "it takes a second or two to load up, but when it does..." and you have TIME to explain that to someone while you wait. It's not nearly as snappy or responsive as it should be, considering this is a flagship device with specs to make most phones look like crap. SUPPOSEDLY, this phone is more powerful than a PSP, but the design flaws make it perform more like an NES. Once it gets going, it's GREAT, but it's the getting it up and running that sucks.
The phone does feel lighter, and cheaper, but it depends on your point of view if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I personally prefer the feel of the Nexus, because it feels more solid.
The loudspeaker on the Vibrant is WAY better than the speaker on the Nexus, although I have to think it something to do with the "hollow-ish" phone back echoing the sound, and therefore amplifying it somewhat, but I haven't tried a direct comparison with the phone backs off.
The Vibrant out-performs most phones on the market in terms of benchmark scores (linpak not included) however, if you were to perform a side-by side comparison of getting those benchmarks loaded up, you would likely have no doubt that the Vibrant is considerably slower. (I'm talking of the latest generation of 1ghz phones, like Nexus, DroidX, and EVO)
If the GPS (and compass, which is HOPELESSLY broken) and lag issues could be resolved, I think the Vibrant could be a contender as possibly the best phone on the planet, but in it's current form, it feels a lot like that funky cousin you try to avoid at family reunions. "Well, he came from a great family, and he's really smart, but he's just a bit off...I mean, look at him, he's pouring his soda into his shoes!"
Overall, I think in it's current state, the Vibrant can't hold a candle to the Nexus, and depending on the I/O issues, it may NEVER compare, but if they can get it running better, and make everything WORK, it will make the Nexus feel like a G1.
My choice for best phone: Nexus

You sound like a PR rep for samsung, not an actual end user. It's comments and sentiments like these that make forums useless for researching products. Too many people bitterly rationalizing bad purchases.
As an owner of a Vibrant I'm probably returning mine, after waiting the full 14 days to see if Samsung would at least indicate that they're working on any sort of fix. They finally started talking about the GPS, but there is no mention of the compass problem yet and I suspect it will remain broken.
The sick part is there are so many people new to android that they don't even realize how broken the compass is. Try using Layar, wikitude, anything related to augmented reality or positional awareness and you'll realize how useless it is.
If you don't care about fancy augmented reality/positional awareness applications or GPS working properly then the vibrant is a great phone.

Just out of curiosity, are the GPS and Compass interrelated somehow such that a GPS fix would fix the compass? OR, is there distinct hardware functions that control the two independently?

Just out of curiosity, are the GPS and Compass interrelated somehow such that a GPS fix would fix the compass? OR, is there distinct hardware functions that control the two independently?

Last I heard, they think the compass is what breaks the gps, according to Tmo and Samsung. Which worries me, because a compass is just a floating magnet. If it's hardware broken, and that's what breaks gps, there may be NO way to fix it. ):

my GPS works fine.....I dont use compass and never did. Gave my Nexus to GF and using Vibrant. While there are many improvement to be made, its MUCH better then Nexus when it was released (I had 3 replacements, all 3 had: 3g issues, light sensor issues, pink camera, and crappy touchscreen....phone was almost useless, but after 3rd party ROMs, Nexus became a good phone with many flaws fixed)
yeah, compass seems to be ****ed, just checked. will compare to Nexus today. ps. navigation-wise I checked both and they seemed to perform the same.
read that compass is software issue and should be fixed. i think its fair to say that we ALL need to give Samsung a chance to fix issues. so far there was no update to Vibrant and it WILL come end of September....maybe October....
and its gonna be a pretty damn big update, not only we get fixes for bugs and possibly more add-ons (features) to Touchwiz, we are also getting a Froyo !

Coming from a long line of HTC phones (G1, MyTouch, Nexus), I've come to expect good GPS performance, and I use maps and nav a LOT. (Well, I used to) I'm extremely disappointed in this, to the point that I will never buy another Samsung phone again.
The screen is AMAZING! The picture quality is intense, and it displays video so fluidly! I can't say enough good things about how beautiful it is! The screen difference is .4 inches, but it looks and feels like it's HUGE in comparison. I've never seen a screen on a cell phone that can show as deep black as this. If you set your phone up poroperly, you can have it on, but not be able to tell (ADW.Launcher/black wallpaper/no status bar/no icons/empty dock/dock open - Looks amazing!) It's such a nice display!
The phone SHOULD be WAY faster. the specs make the Nexus look old and dated. Of course, when you're used to touching an app shortcut, and it just HAPPENS, a 2-10 second lag seems like FOREVER! There are some MAJOR design flaws in the Vibrant, such as the 16 gig internal storage. It's a class 6, yes, but it's got VERY serious i/o issues, so almost everything that calls on the resources on it stalls and lags. (You'll see TONS of people who say there's no lag, but most of those people came from a dated phone, like a G1 or MyTouch. It's WAY faster than any of the older generation 1 or generation 2 phones, but it's painfully slow when you're used to the powerhouse known as Nexus. (2 seconds doesn't sound long, until you're trying to show off your phone, and you feel the need to explain that "it takes a second or two to load up, but when it does..." and you have TIME to explain that to someone while you wait. It's not nearly as snappy or responsive as it should be, considering this is a flagship device with specs to make most phones look like crap. SUPPOSEDLY, this phone is more powerful than a PSP, but the design flaws make it perform more like an NES. Once it gets going, it's GREAT, but it's the getting it up and running that sucks.
The phone does feel lighter, and cheaper, but it depends on your point of view if this is a good thing or a bad thing. I personally prefer the feel of the Nexus, because it feels more solid.
The loudspeaker on the Vibrant is WAY better than the speaker on the Nexus, although I have to think it something to do with the "hollow-ish" phone back echoing the sound, and therefore amplifying it somewhat, but I haven't tried a direct comparison with the phone backs off.
The Vibrant out-performs most phones on the market in terms of benchmark scores (linpak not included) however, if you were to perform a side-by side comparison of getting those benchmarks loaded up, you would likely have no doubt that the Vibrant is considerably slower. (I'm talking of the latest generation of 1ghz phones, like Nexus, DroidX, and EVO)
If the GPS (and compass, which is HOPELESSLY broken) and lag issues could be resolved, I think the Vibrant could be a contender as possibly the best phone on the planet, but in it's current form, it feels a lot like that funky cousin you try to avoid at family reunions. "Well, he came from a great family, and he's really smart, but he's just a bit off...I mean, look at him, he's pouring his soda into his shoes!"
Overall, I think in it's current state, the Vibrant can't hold a candle to the Nexus, and depending on the I/O issues, it may NEVER compare, but if they can get it running better, and make everything WORK, it will make the Nexus feel like a G1.
My choice for best phone: Nexus

I had the nexus, and already I've had more problems with the nexus than I did the Vibrant, it's by far faster and more usable. I LOVED my Nexus, but still..seeing all the things wrong with it I definitely like the Vibrant better. True multitouch, super crisp clear screen where even Avatar looks like you're watching it in stereoscopic 3D. Everything has been superb. The GPS problem is a given and I read up before I bought. Still more satisfied, an yes battery life is better as I could never get a "full" days use out of my Nexus even with everything turned off.

Thats the thing. Besides the weight, there is nothing else that makes this phone WORSE than the Nexus.
I say this based on the fact that in a few days-week the G2 will have tethering and mobile hotspot support.
I traded my Nexus + 50 dollars for the G2 and I was originally gonna sell the G2 but now i am keeping it.
The G2 is a well designed, well made phone that has a great screen, keyboard, and battery life.
You cant go wrong getting a G2, in fact, all you Nexus One owners should try and get a new phone soon bc the Nexus One's resale is dropping fast.
A month ago the phone was worth 500 easily now its pushing 300-400 if you do it through craigslist. Ebay still holds steady at 500 same with Amazon.
Bottom line: Nexus One owners have a hot phone they can easily parlay into a trade on craigslist like i did.
There is no need to wait for the next gen of phone, take your nexus one, get a g2, its faster, better battery life than nexus, and has a keyboard.

Only things that I think the people here on Xda would disagree with you on the G2 being better than a Nexus One are:
1) Hard to root since it resets the phone every reboot
2) Physical keyboard might not be for everyone... as I've said before I like a phone that can slide into my front pocket without the added bulk of a keyboard making people think I have an erection =/
3) At the mercy of T-mobile to get updates and features. Gonna get gingerbread but who knows if you will get anything after that?
The G2 is a wonderful phone though I agree and pretty much think of it as a Nexus One that has traded:
A) freedom from carriers holding back OS updates and features
B) freedom to root
For:
A) physical keyboard

Edit: Two things I caught reading your email are you don't like the battery life + touch sensor. For me these things are not even a consideration since:
1) I carry a tiny spare battery in wallet to last an entire day of heavy, heavy use.
2) The only games i play are emulators using a bluetooth wiimote so I don't even use the multitouch for games so the clearpad issue is overblown.

I could go on, but that is enough for now... I dropped the G2 back in the mail to T-Mo, and resumed use of my N1 within a week. The G2 has potential, but massively sucks.
I think the next phone I will consider is the Droid Terminator in 2011Q1...
I don't want a device with a keyboard...I find the Nexus One to be the perfect form factor. G2 can never be, for me. I'm keeping and using my two Nexus Ones until they die.

I've noticed it does effect zooming sometimes, typing on the touch keyboard, and sometimes is just completely off and you have to put into standby and come back to fix it.
For me the major problems in the n1 is the touch screen issue, battery life is short, the gpu is weak, and call quality is not what i'm used to.
Made the switch too and loving it. Screen does seem nicer and keyboard is great especially for my emulators. The extra weight also feels good in my hand so I see that as a pro. Still got my Nexus for gingerbread purposes and as a backup. No root is not a con and notice you said no root YET we have cyanogen, enomther, and other devs working on the G2 and we do have a rom sure its only on temp root and you gotta run terminal commands and ext partition to use it its still a rom. As far as memory goes there is 4gb just not all available to user, 1.5gb is more then enough for app storage more would be nice but not necessary and plus some ppl are saying its a kernel issue and can be fixed in OTA. In the end though I love this phone, I still lurk around the Nexus forums and right now have my nexus put away in my otterbox just incase something happens to my G2

You forgot the biggest Conn of all; the hinge issue that will ultimately plague ALL G2s. I went to TMO store after launch and their G2 already didn't stay in place. I held it upside down and the screen just hung from the phone. Now you may not have this issue right now but like all moving parts they will give out. Daily use of the keyboard will wear out the plastic parts of the hinges fast. So, in about two months when all the dual core hspa+ phones hit the market you'll wish you hadn't wasted your upgrade.

Don't know about you guys but I'm playing with both! Have my N1 since spring and made it my *****. Huge thanks to Evil's Desire HD!! Also, my wife just got the G2 and we trade every once in a while. I really like both phones.
Ive used the G2 more and more over the course of this week.

-Nexus one call quality IS HORRIBLE compared to G2
-Nexus one RECEPTION is HORRIBLE compared to G2
-Nexus one battery is MODERATELY worse than the G2

You can NOT compare the craftsmanship of the G2 to the mytouch sorry.

A moderately faster processor and front facing camera isnt going to poop on the G2
That's why alot of you guys with a Nexus should take advantage of the chance to trade for a G2 on craigslist and get a phone with a higher resale value that will hold its 400 resale for at least 6-8 months whereas in 6-8 months the Nexus One will barely fetch 200-250.
Thats a big difference. And you get the benefit of using a faster phone that has better call quality and reception.

Wow, aside from the keyboard, you just described my next phone to a T. I absolutely love my Nexus One and so far nothing has even tempted me. I like the size of the Evo's screen, but honestly it feels kinda sluggish compared to my N1. I think the Motorola T2 *might* be my next phone if Google doesn't try and do another "direct from Google" device. We shall see.....

You can't see the big picture so I will explain. Holding the phone upside down is just an example of the the higes are now. As the hinges get worn out more the phone will come apart in your pocket and if you dont grab it the right the the phone will get caught in your pocket; you'll answer the phone in your pocket or hang up on the person. Maybe the phone will catch the corners of your pocket and put more stress on the hinges. The point is in the long run you will have to put more attention into handling your phone than you should, b/c of the design.
I want a new phone without a keyboard.

Kinda pointless post but was bored at work so thought I'd share my views for anyone else who's on the fence about getting it:
I was waiting for CES announcements to see what was coming out in the future but changed my mind and decided to jump in and get a Nexus S. I was coming from an old WinMo phone that I've had for ages (having been a poor student), which probably isn't the best base to be commenting on this but I'm used to android as I've been deving on my housemates HTC Desire HD.
I'm so glad I did, I won't lie and say the phone is perfect as no phone is. It is, however, a true pleasure to use and looks gorgeous (especially compared to WinMo).
I mostly just wanted to put a nice positive post on the forums because there's allot of people moaning about one thing or another to-do with the phone and as with anything people only tend to post when they have a problem or issue. Especially regarding the specs being current gen and not next gen; and therefore a lack of longevity. It's easy to forget that being a "Google" phone means that regardless of hardware it will be around for a while, and will still be enjoyable and exciting to use during that time thanks to the ongoing updates.
The device feels solid and premium, even the plastic backing, and I prefer it in the hand and visually to my house mates Desire HD (which is also a great phone). Battery life is better than most equivalent devices. Sound is crisp and clear. Reception on the same network has been better that the HD. Everything has worked perfectly. The screen is beautiful, especially if you like darker backgrounds.
My only disappointment is the lack of gorilla-glass, but that's not a biggy for me.
The phone wasn't meant to be bleeding edge. It was meant to work, and work well. It does, and to quote Mr. D's "I'm loving it".
Thumbs up Google and Samsung.
Even though people are going crazy over the dual-core phone announcements at CES, but none of those phones won't be available in months and they still will launch with Froyo.
The Nexus S still uses the most powerful harware available at the moment but the feature that it's really marketed for is the fact that it will be running vanilla Anroid and will get update priority.
I have this phone and I can easily say it's one of the best android phone the market. Here in the UK there is no 4G so all this no HSPA+ stuff doesnt really affect me.

I understand and agree with wanting the Nexus S for the timely and clean updates, but I've always called people out when they play the "I don't need it" card when specs are compared. There are many things on phones we don't "need," but that doesn't abate people's disappointments. Granted, it goes both ways; people will find anything to complain about (like if it had 720p recording, some would say it should have 1080).
Everyone is different, everyone has opinions, and everyone can voice them at an open forum.
I love the clean black look of the Nexus S. No emblems, no harware, and no icons.

Amen. The SAMSUNG on my i9000 and the T-Mobile & Samsung on the Vibrant are just butt ugly compared next to the totally unmarked NS.
Still, that ugly Verizon logo on the new Samsung LTE phone won't keep me from buying it!

Agreed! My first 'real' smartphone too (my Nokia E63 could be classed as a smartphone, albeit not a very good one, suited me at the time though) and I absolutely love it! I have finally jumped on the Android wagon (lack of money prevented me before ) and I am not looking back!

Same with Australia. We have WiMAX but only in Perth and a couple of other places (not in my area though) but it doesn't support phones. So everything is perfect for me! Sure there are other features that would have been nice to have, but I would never had really used them, so overall it doesn't detract from the experience.

Seriously, I love this thing.
I think I'm one of the few when I say that I like the build. It looks very good, all black. Plastic makes it lighter, and it's firmer. Only con is that plastic is slippery, and of course fingerprints. The Contour Display, although subtile, makes it very appealing, as does the chin on the back.
Especially with Super AMOLED and it's deep blacks, the phone is awesome. I really like the notification bar fading into the phone itself, and that the buttons are not visible when the phone is turned off. We will get the Nexus S with Super Clear LCD here, which will be nice for lighter interfaces and for browsing the web, but I am a little bit jealous on the Americans and the Britons. With Super AMOLED a dark background looks much better, and in combination with the black finish of the phone, it's beautiful.
The Nexus S is my 4th android phone & I love it. I started with a T-Mobile Pulse (I really liked that phone, coming from a Nokia n97!), then the HTC Hero, HTC Desire & finally the Nexus S.
I thought the screen was good on my Desire (when I'm not outside lol), but the 4 inch NS screen is just amazing. I had to get used to a few things though...
1) No notification light (noled app is a good solution, but obviously uses a little bit of battery as the screen is on).
2) lack of trackball (this is just personal as I used the trackball a lot for moving the curser when typing).
3) the phone is really light & a bit slippery (i love the handsets design, but I'll get a case once I find one I like).
4) no sense ui (not for the Widgets, I jus prefer the dialler, gallery & SMS apps over the stock android ones).
Overall, the points I mentioned have not stopped me loving this phone. They are just things I became accustomed to from my previous android phones. I also miss the excellent Facebook integration from sense ui (birthdays in my calendar for example).
Having said all that, I still wouldn't swap my Nexus S for any other phone on the market today. I'm a big fan of complete customisation & I haven't even mentioned the ease of getting full root (anyone tried to get 'S-OFF' on a Desire lol) or the fact I have gingerbread out of the box! Finally, any phone with a screen bigger than 4 inches is just too uncomfortable for me.

I came to the Nexus S from the Evo, and I have to say that I like it more in almost every way. I do, however, have one legitimate complaint, and that is that the wifi connections are very weak.
I just switched over to the NS4G from the Epic 4G today and after playing with this for a solid 8hrs now.
NO REGRETS.. It's fast right out of the box.. I almost didn't even bother rooting it I was so impressed.. Then I did root, flashed mikeyinid's v.5 ROM and WOW. It just got faster...
Amazing phone.. I will never.. Ever.. Go back to a non-Google phone again.. Yeah, it's plastic on the back, but it feels solid.. Not wobbly and cheap like my Epic felt. Swore Tyco made that thing.
I love my Nexus S too, its my first Droid phone, although my girlfriend had the mytouch. I learned how awesome droids are from rooting and installing a custom ROM on. I had jailbroken iPhones and iPod for my self and friends in the past but the freedom of the Droid was what made me want one. I was going to get the mytouch 4g but after I saw the nexus s at best buy, I knew I had to get it, the screen is by far the best looking, and its just sexy. I have had for two months and I love it. James Bond Sabi Dee UV kernal is so smooth, running cm7.

Its more aswsome if u flash a cm7 into it. Totally worth to downgrade back to 2.3.3 and flash a cm 7.0.3

I may as well plugin my thoughts too. I just passed down my Nexus One to my girlfriend and got the Nexus S. I'm quite happy with it!
Things I like about it versus the N1...
- 4" is my new favorite size
- The haptic feedback feels better
- Light weight
- SCLCD makes texts easier on the eyes
- It feels faster overall... smooth scrolling in stock launcher!
- Camera mic picks up much better audio when recording
- Battery feels like it lasts longer after heavy use!
Things I don't like about it versus the N1...
- It's plastic and I'm very hesitant when putting it in my pocket - need to find a case soon
- Display colors don't seem as vibrant, but definitely clear and great color reproduction... just not excellent (again, I'm using the SCLCD version not AMOLED)
Summary: No regrets switching my N1 for NS! The size, speed and battery life made me one very happy owner!

How would you rate the battery on the Nexus S compared to the Desire?
Ahh while we are praising our NS's, I want to say something about how I felt when I first got my phone. Ordered it beginning of April from negri-electronics and was a bit skeptical at first, but after being brainwashed by the ads online and playing with the NS that was on display at Best Buy, I couldn't wait any further.
The day came and I had been creeping on the tracking status every 2 minutes to check the location of the package. I had gotten it expedited so I'd get it as fast as possible, yet the shipping day felt like the longest day ever when I was sitting and waiting outside my house with 3 cups of coffee, my laptop, and season 6 of The Office. After waiting for about 283828833 hours (in reality 3 hours) my package came! Felt like christmas when I opened that box, popped in my sim, and watched that sexy Nexus Bootscreen in awe much like my first time last year.
My cellphone journey was weird.
I started out with a small nokia phone that lasted me quite a long time. Then I 2 christmases ago I got a blackberry. My mother had picked up the N1 at that time and I loved it so much I traded her my blackberry (after countless times of persauding the blackberry was faster and such.. ) From then on my love for the Google Phone spread like wildfire.
And now I'm with SNS. Not Samsung Nexus S, my Sexy Nexus S.
