So I had an EVO before my MyTouch and when I saved a contact it went straight to my GMail account. I noticed contacts were missing from there today and was confused, I found out when I save a contact the default location is T-Mobile's sync app. I tried disabling it under accounts and sync and all I can do is turn off sync but when I add a new contact it still defaults to that account. Now I know I can change it in the little drop down but I would prefer just to have GMail as the default so that I don't forget to change it or something. Plus every time I do change it this stupid warning pops up.
Anyone know how do make GMail default? I can't find settings for it ANYWHERE!
Hi, please search next time
This has been asked and answered, here is the relevant post on how to (AT YOUR OWN RISK) completely disable T-Mobile sync: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9922041&postcount=5
Does nothing, I am fully rooted running stock ROM but when I search that and delete everything T-Mobile sync stays in my setting and when I restart all those files come back if I seach with root explorer again...
You can be "fully rooted" with permaroot, but are you S-OFF in hboot? If not, any modifications to /system will revert on any reboot.
Yes, S-Off HBOOT 0.85.2007 I used this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
to root and gain S-off. If it is any connection I also can't get any of the over clocking kernals/mods to work on my phone. This is a replacement MyTouch, my last ones screen shattered. But I was able to root and over clock that one, never tried this deleting T-Mobile sync till I got this replacement phone.
Just uncheck "tmobile" from the view menu in the contacts screen. Then it will automatically select Google as the default save location.

Also does nothing, at least for my phone and my stores demo MyTouch... Still defaults to T-Mobile and you can't remove the account in settings either because it says to master reset it.

Make sure you don't use faves. If you have any contacts in faves, T-mobile becomes the default save for contacts. I just froze the faves app and widget along with applying all the other suggested fixes and so far google remains my default save.
...also, delete data in contacts storage app and resync everything to google.

Thank you!!!!!!! I just deleted anything that had to do with My Favs as well as all the nab files in root explorer and now it defaults to Google most of the time, seems like depending on who you enter the contacts menu it switches from Google to phone. If I go to contacts via the app drawer and add bee, Google is default, but if I click the phone in the launcher bar then go to add a contact it makes phone the default. Doesn't matter to me though I go through app menu most times and either way at least its not on T-Mobile. I'll use the thanks button when I get home the app doesn't have the option.

No problem. If you look at my post history, a couple weeks back I wrote a pretty detailed process on how to keep Google as your default contacts. It explains how you need to unlink (or better, delete) all contacts and basically only use Google to sync. Glad to help.

This doesn't appear to be correct. One of the first things I do when dealing with Contacts is change the 'View'. I only have one Google account and my Facebook checked for my View Contacts > View options and when adding contacts, I keep T-Mobile hidden, my other Gmail account hidden, etc. T-Mobile is still the default Contact Type.
In regard to this post...

This seems to have the same effect, since now I no longer have T-Mobile as a Contact Type when I go to add a new contact...
What I don't like however, is that of my 3 Contact Types - Google (Gmail #1), Google, (Gmail #2) and Phone, Phone is the default Contact Type now when adding new contacts...
Is the same true (i.e. that Phone is the default Contact Type) after deleting anything to do with Nab?
My default seems to stay google now that I changed it from phone the very first time after deleting nab and my favs. It did originally default to the phone though. Also it seems like it may depend on how you actually enter your contacts. If you go in through the Contacts app via the app drawer google is the default, if you go in via the little phone in the launcher bar it seems to make phone the default. odd?

You can change the google account used in G1 without factory reset, once you have done the setup, go to the setting option and then applications, in application go to Gmail and then clear the user data option, once you clear the Gmail data, and IM data from application you will see a notification/alert and that will require you to do the gmail setup again, use the other gmail account to register.
NOTE: the contacts and logs also got deleted in this process, so make sure you have a complete contact listed some where or better sycn it with previous gmail account and then export that from gmail. Once you setup the different account, import that contact and sync back to G1.

Nice! Thanks for the useful tip
I tried this and it still won't remove my account.
I am too suspicious as i tried but phone never asked me for newer User name and password
good work but anyone verify this will work, i hate losing all my contacts but still a very useful tip!

I have tried it again and it works, try to clear the data of Google Application from the application, as you clear the data, android will have a notification to register again, use the new account to register.
Note:make sure you take care of contacts, else you may loose all that.

what do you mean:
"try to clear the data of Google Application from the application, as you clear the data"
so go to settings and manage applications then go to Google Apps and clear data?
sorry, i'm not the best reading comprehension kind of person as was seen when i take standardized exams

I know there's probably a good reason for this, but what's the benefit of using a different account?
i figure just if you want to change email accounts or start somewhat fresh

not sure what's going on, I tried again and here are the steps go to setting then application management and the click gmail storage and clear data, do same with with google app storage and clear the data, wait for few minute and you get a reactive notification with a triangle and exclaimation.

Two that come to mind immediately:
1) You want to use a different global default account.
2) You are getting rid of the phone.
The first thing you said was:
"You can change the google account used in G1 without factory reset, once you have done the setup, go to the setting option and then applications, in application go to Gmail and then clear the user data option"
The second thing you said was:
"I have tried it again and it works, try to clear the data of Google Application from the application, as you clear the data, android will have a notification to register again, use the new account to register."
Since the first thing you said (just the word "applications") was not very close to the ACTUAL NAME of the application you mean to be talking about, I suspect most ppl here tried clearing the data for the Gmail application.
I know I did, at any rate. Explanation FAIL.
Trying the suggestion with application: Google Apps now....
It works.
Get the effin names right, plz.
Here's an example of clear and correct steps:
Home -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Google Apps -> Clear data -> Notifications (top of screen) -> Tap "Your account must be updated" -> Enter new account info -> reboot* -> Get your contacts back somehow.
* I'm not certain that the reboot is required, but it seemed to take the Gmail application an ungodly amount of time to sync otherwise.
And lastly, note that the Call Log (tab in Contacts) is NOT deleted by this method.
Install AnyCut from Market. Turn on wifi.
AnyCut > New shortcut > Activity > Setup Wizard.

Anyone know how to remove the T-Mobile Sync option? When ever I add a new contact it adds it to T-Mobile sync and not to google.
You are talking about two different things:
1. saving new contacts to t-mobile account is default, you cannot change that. But before you save your contact you can choose from a pull down menu to save it in your google account. Next time you add another contact it defaults to t-mobile again. It sucks and is the only things that really bothers me.
2.syncing with t-mobile account...your t-mobile contacts are synced with the t-mobile server....you can stop the syncing by going to the account and sync menu. you can stop the syncing but you cannot remove the t-mobile account completely.
ahh I was hoping to uninstall it but that will do... thank you!

as am i, hopefully someone finds the service or .apk name for that because if someone who rooted the phone and wants to use it on a diff carrier doesnt need that sync account in there.
###As usual backup all your data and I'm in no way responsible if you brick your phone. It shouldn't because I just finished this on mine and it works fine.###
Now I found a way and just did it on my MT4G. Grab root explorer or similar if you don't have it. Open it and use the search for "nab" anything that comes up I.E. that says tmobile.nabservice blah blah blah. There was like 4-5 files for me one zip, obex, and a few others delete em all then your done. The Tmobile sync account is gone and the default contact save is the first account you set up for in sync.
How do you know it automatically saves it to your "tmobile" account? because i have auto sync unchecked for tmobile, and when i go into the settings for my contacts i have everything unchecked except google contacts...but under tmobile contacts it says ZERO

This is true regardless of if you have T-Mobile syncing or not (I have mine disabled 'cause who the heck needs T-Mobile contacts?)
I posted in the thread that led me here, but I wanted to ask Keldarr or anyone who has done the removal of all-things-Nab - does Phone show up as the default Contact Type? Instead of deleting anything to do with Nab, I just froze the NabService via Titanium...
This gets T-Mobile out of the list of Contact Types, but now Phone is the default - not the Google account I wish to be the default. I wanted to see if those who have deleted all traces of Nab, have Phone as a Contact Type and if it is the default.
How strange, in my case it saves by default to my Google account every time I create a new contact. Check your display settings.

Slow reply sorry for me my default contact save is the first gmail account i added. not sure what it would be if u didn't have a sync account besides t-mobiles sync but id assume it would be phone until u add a google account.
I know it can be changed individually after each time, but I'd rather it go directly to Google and skip TMO setting.

That probably means you still have T-Mobile contacts linked to some of your Google ones. Try this:
1) On the web, make sure ALL your contacts are in your Google.com contacts.
2) On your phone, make sure sync with T-Mobile is UNCHECKED and that ONLY Google sync IS checked.
3) Go to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications and choose the Running tab.
4) Scroll and choose Contacts Storage.
5) Select Clear Data - WARNING- THIS WILL ERASE ALL CONTACTS DATA FROM YOUR PHONE. DON'T WORRY. IT WILL SYNC BACK.
6) Go into Contacts. Hit Menu/View. Make sure that T-mobile (and any other accounts you don't want to display) is UNCHECKED.
7) Go back to Accounts & Sync and make sure Google is syncing ant that T-Mobile remains deselected.
You should be good to go when it comes to Google being the default contact entry. If you had contacts linked with Facebook, Twitter or otherwise, you will have to now let those sync and auto-link again. It's worth the trouble, though. Good luck.

ok, so we've had push notifications for quite some time now, since 2.2
does anyone know the reason why SO many apps(big ones, too) seem to refuse to implement push notifications?
facebook says they have them, but they've never worked for me ever. and there's no settings for them. only for polling
official twitter app still polls
words with friends polls
etc
do these devs just not want to add in support for 2 sets of phones? 2.2+ and everyone below 2.2?
i can't think of any reason why this happens, but its a huge issue in my eyes. android phones get bad enough battery life as is.
if you go into facebook and enable notifications but set poll time to never you get push notifications
Tried it. It's never worked on my n1, and I know I'm not the only one.
My gf gets them on her sensation though
Don't use Facebook as an example. Their app is pure garbage. Lots of apps use Push. Trillian, Skype, Talk, eBuddy, etc...
Yes but my point is lots of apps also don't use push still. Apps that are updated regularly. It makes no sense to me that devs are seemingly ignoring it.
My thoughts exactly. Does it cost more to implement push notification?
Twitter app is updated. Says they added push, yet, just like the facebook app, there are 0 settings for push and only options for polling
I don't ****ing get it. These companies must put their A and B teams on iphone apps and their H teams on android

There are options for Twitter. They're just buried under each account.

Also, you must be running your own H team since the term is pull, not poll.

The only options under the profile are for polling (the correct term. it periodically polls the server for updates). Just like the facebook one there's no sign of any push options anywhere

ok, so apparently "automatic refresh" means push notifications? thats so misleading. it's not refreshing anything, then
yet there is still an option to set how often it polls the server, with no option for never
ugh
either way, this still backs up my point that they have ****ty devs making these apps
I'm pretty sure this is a feature for people who follow hundreds, if not thousands, of people who don't want to be pushed a notification every second of every day. They must figure that people with a lot of followers would rather see a big chunk of updates at once rather than being notified to death.
And yes, "Automatic Refresh" doesn't sound like push notification at all but that's just part of the crummy UI of the official twitter app.

Trust me i've tryed and it works for me and a lot of my friends, to enable Facebook push notifications:
1 kill the application in "application manager" and erase data and cache.
2 Go to facebook.com with pc and deactivate your account (don't worry you won't lose anything)
3 after a minute log in again with the pc
4 and now log in with you phone
Now it should work.
Try and tell me if it works. i've set the update period to 4 hours.

Dang... I was really, really hoping this would work. I deleted the data for the app on my phone and deactivated my facebook account. I then reactivated my account and then logged in in my phone. I have since had 2 facebook notifications show on the web browser, but I have yet to have any sort of notification on my phone.
This has been especially bad since the gmail app no longer allows other apps to see the email, which knocked out my "push" notifications for facebook from Friendcaster Pro. Grr... I just want push notifications.

alright, I've searched and can't find a solution... hopefully one of you guys can help.
I've got a MT4G running 2.3.4, Virtuous Unity v2.39.0 and for some reason, my contacts are out of control... I've got my SIM contacts, phone, exchange, gmail, and facebook, and they all link correctly, etc... but on the ones that I've had on previous devices, or have been there when I've synced, they don't skip or replace them, they just keep piling up... like, 38 entries per contact, with the same number... if I go in and manually remove the #'s, hit save, and re-open it, there are 37 blank fields for "phone" w/the one saved entry... is there any way to either save one per contact, delete all of them, and start over? this is a pain in the ass...

There are 2 ways to do this either go to your gmail account online and open contacts and delete all the duplicate contacts and log out from your phone g mail and re log in and your set
The other way is the phone will tell u that u have duplicate contacts and if you want to sync them together

they're all linked together, say if I go to "MULTISTATE TRANS" there is only one entry in my contacts, but when I open THE contact, there are 38 entries w/the same phone number, and if I type in "MU-" to send a text/call the entire predictive list all says "MULTISTATE TRANS"
here's a screenshot of when I try to edit the contact, and one when I go to send a text...

Google contacts has a built In contact finder
Thanks... I tried that app, it deleted contacts that weren't duplicates... I ended up exporting all contacts to my SD, uploading the vcards to my gmail on my computer, then used it to sort and delete the dupes... Then I saved it as a new vcard, erased allllllll contacts, then imported... Pain in the ass, but it was the only thing that worked...

I hope you emailed the developer of the app and told him about the problems you had with it. Sorry it didn't work out. I'm glad you got it fixed, and thanks for lettimg us know what worked.

I haven't yet, but I'll be sure to email them. By the time all of the vcard's had uploaded to gmail and such, there were 5800+ contacts on there, and when I got rid of allllllll of the duplicates, I took it down to about 300 actual contacts. I still have no idea why/how it kept importing the existing vcard's from the SD/SIM/phone or w/e, but it was crazy.
