Hey i'm a new guy to the whole rooting scene, and i have a bunch of questions. I have a Vibrant, and the only real reason i see for me rooting is so that i can get froyo ASAP, because being with T-mobile i've realized that we always get all the updates late. Other than that what other reason would there be to root? I read the whole Q+A and watched the videos and blogs and read all these posts on how to root the phone, and what rooting is, but my question is what happens after that? Everyone is talking roms and black market apps, and froyo how would i put any of that stuff on my phone once i've rooted, and what, if anything, is there to put on the vibrant since it's such a relative new phone. As you can tell i'm lost in the sauce and having spent a little over $2000 in the last 14 months on cellphones (Long story, just know i left android with my g1 and went windows mobile a few times, worst damn mistake ever windows phone's blow!!!!), and finally found one that i can stomach without wanting to smash it against the wall, i would hate to do something stupid and be out another phone. Is rooting even for me? I really just want less crapware, no adds, and a little faster performance thru froyo HELP!!! and i don't really speak too much computer talk, i'm an accountant not a progammer. and answers would be very helpful. i'm so confused right now!!!
P.S if i root, can i get rid of all this crapware that t-mobile has on this phone, and if so, how? And
I would try to learn a whole lot more on my own before even thinking about rooting. You can really mess things up if you don't know what you're doing.

Read the first post of the tips and tricks thread at the to. It should clear this up for you. If not, ask a question AFTER reading that post.
To clarify things: "Rooting" does not give you access to loading custom ROMs. Rooting only gives you administrative permissions to do more things with your phone and access to apps on the market that require root access.
Froyo is not out on custom ROMs for Vibrant yet (don't ask for ETAs either). Some other reasons to root as I mentioned above is to gain access to apps that require root access.
Yes rooting can help you get rid of the bloatware. To gain access to flash custom ROMs, you need to do it thru Clockwork's Recovery, but there aren't any custom ROMs available YET.
Would you dismantle the engine under the hood of your car if you don't know what the parts are?
If you have to ask such basic questions after reading the FAQs, etc., rooting is not for you.
When i run Rommanager it says an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands.... what do i do ??
try visionary again, temp root, then permroot and restart the phone to make root stick
Side note:disclaimer:
My advice (without trying to hurt anyone's feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with everything (Linux, ADB, XDA) before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
Way too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. You need to learn your device first.
If you don't know how to perform a Nandroid backup, or restore a previous ROM backup, flash updates, install custom ROM's etc, then you should NOT root. You should browse the forums here, read everything until you know it well. Google search related topics. Exhaust all available avenues, then ask questions. After you've executed all of these options you might consider rooting and starting to tinker with your device.

DOUBLE SIDE NOTE:
Thank you for saying that.... I do all the time... rooting should only be done after massive research, research and then when you think you've done all the research in the world... squze in a little bit more research
The reason why phones don't come rooted and why their getting harder to root is because of all the people that don't do their research go and destroy their phones, then try to return them as a manufacture defect...
If you were in a phone manufacture shoes you wouldn't wanna pay for those phones either...

Ah-Men! Its seems as though google (or anyother search engine) just sends people to this website when the query "how can I try and be cooler" is entered. So therefore no research is done resulting in bricked devices and price increases and diffuclty rooting future devices and forum clogging and thermonuclear war and all around causing me to have a bad day. </end rant\>

Hello, I was wondering what the benefits of rooting the My Touch 4g would be? Would this allow me to remove the bloatware that came pre-installed on the phone? Also I've heard talk of a possible better rom to put on the phone. Would someone be able to explain why this would be better and what rom might be better?
Thanks

I second what CBC has said. They lock these phones down for business and support reasons, mainly that having root lets you pretty easily screw things up. You shouldn't root unless you have a good idea of what's actually going on, how to back out of it, etc. Just page through some of the root/unroot threads and look at all the stupid questions people post. If they don't look stupid to you, please read read read before thinking any more about rooting.
Don't take any personal offense to this, it just that there's a real chance you can brick your device. The software root itself is fairly safe but at least the original method to disabling the write protection--flashing the engineering hboot--modifies your last line of defense in fixing a broken device.

Sometimes the benefits are little things that are not found in change logs. Things that are only discovered through usage by people who have already rooted their devices.

Amen! I could read all day long till I am blue in the face and I have. I did not think asking people who are familiar with the process would be such a bad thing..
Good job with the flaming though. I'll just chalk it up as internet small man syndrome...
@spazfishy
I first started tweaking my phones with a couple WM HTC devices. I did it mostly to increase performance and become a member of a community of geeks (for lack of a better term). BTW, when I say tweak I don't mean building ROMs or writing code. I'm an idiot in that regard.
I'm a year and a month into having Android phones and I still don't know anything about SDK, very, very little about ADB push/pull, etc. Still, I've managed to have fun with my phones and have rooted and toyed with them without any issue worse than a boot loop here and there. It's fun to be the first guy to get an update for a ROM because you're eagerly hitting refresh on the supporting thread. There's also a satisfaction in reading a ****load of info on these forums and figuring out something by yourself or with a little input from the guys here.
I can agree that you should read as much as you can about how these phones work. However, you don't need to know as much as you might think. What helped me was watching some youtube videos...walkthroughs of rooting and tutorials for installing ROMs.
It's **** like this, XDA.
Instead of telling this guy "sorry, rooting is too difficult for your little brain to comprehend, you're just going to end up bricking you're phone" why don't you try to help him with his problem?
I've been following XDA for a while now, and it bothers me that many of you would rather treat this as some type of subculture when we're only talking about ****ing cell phones. Instead, why not try to grow this little community, and show carriers that consumers not only desire open source, they demand it in products they spend their hard earned money buy.
Things will only get there if we can rely on developers and enthusiasts to help spread their knowledge. Modaco and Cyanogen already do a really good job of it, and so does AOSP.
I say to spazfishy, yes. Root you're phone, but not right now. Wait a bit. As more stable ROMs became available, this is actually a good way of getting your phone to behave the way you want it to. And if you've been on this website before, you know the risks involved so do you're homework, and happy hunting.
Hopefully you'll find someone with talent willing to help you.

I SECOND this sentiment. yes, I agree with the overall concept that people should do a search on the forums first and that we don't "need " several separate threads with the same info... however how much better is it really to have a bunch of threads floating around (taking up just as much space as the redundant threads that everyone treats as a plague) chastising and mocking people who just want a little help with their friggin phone??
I've recently been spending a lot of time on these forums after picking up my mt4g and as useful as these forums are - every third thread is someone belittling a poster for asking a simple question. it's pathetic and not beneficial to our community.

yes, heaven forbid he not do EXACTLY what you did!
in a Q&A forum no less..give me a break. and no, I'm not gonna keep going on and on about this in this thread. i'm done.
it just proves the original point i was trying to make - which is now we just have another thread on this boards of people being a**holes and talking down to other people just because they don't possess the exact same information you do or because they aren't going about your perfect prescribed process for obtaining said information..whatever.
if someone asks a question you don't like - why don't you just go re-root your phone? or put your wife's cat in the microwave?
if you have the answer - why not take the 90 seconds it was going to take you to be a giant tool and just answer the question?
OR if redundant posts is really THAT big of a problem on here - then have moderators just delete these posts? or figure out how to become a moderator and then you can play forum cop in all of your spare time and delete these posts and actually be part of a solution not just a part of another problem.
see all you happy campers in another post
have a nice day.
(and btw - CBC - at least your initial reply had some actual information in it and geniune advice. jjackson was just being a jerk. that's what i thought was totally unnecessary. and as far it being 'my turn' - since i've been regularly reading this forum, i do answer questions when i feel like i have something to contribute..this is my first android phone and i have only temp rooted so that's why i didn't answer his post to begin with)
Ok well I'm sorry if I otherwise offended anyone with my rants.

Hey, a big thanks to the people that were actually helpful. For real this reply will be short and simple but seriously to the haters. Why do you even waste your time replying if you do not like my question? Are you simply here to feel powerful and mock people? Like why would you go out of your way to call me and idiot and assume I am going to break my phone? I really don't see what's in it for you besides a self attained ego boost. Hence the small man comment...
So to the helpful people: thedroid, daryllh, Sl3PR, ckisgen and anyone else with a helpful word or two your comments are much appreciated and with your wisdom I am slightly more educated and will make a decision. And to the others well I didn't know my text took up so much space!! Good luck in scaring more new users away! I hope you guys get a lot of people to click your donation buttons!
I was wondering, any objections if I start working on a guide to all things modding-related on the Arc?
I'm not the most technically-proficient so I'll probably need some help to start off with.
But once I understand something, I can generally explain it pretty clearly.
So anyone mind if I get to work on it?
And anyone feel like lending a hand?
It is a good idea but first we need to find subject many people are interested. You are serving this community the best as you could, why would anyone mind it?
Thanks for offering it.
Well, it would be a guide to rooting, unlocking the bootloader, all that stuff.
But unlike the current guides, it would all be in one place and it would basically start from scratch.
In my experience, one of the more common problems around here is that guides are patchy, they assume varying amounts of prior knowledge, some use confusing or conflicting terms.
My intention is to start from scratch, explain everything in order and make it as simple as possible to find out what you want to do.

Not quite.
More like this.
The first post is like the contents, with links to subsequent posts, one of which would be a guide to unlocking your bootloader, another would be a guide to rooting, another would be a guide to updating your software etc etc.
Basically, a single guide to replace the miscellany of different guides we'd end up with otherwise and much clearer/easier to follow.
No offence to Bin4ry, his work in rooting the Arc is amazing but his 'how-to' is a little unclear...
Great idea Step I am a noob & i will definetely love this kind of guide
So trhe first question is, apart from unlocking the bootloader, rooting and updating the phone, what else would such a guide need to cover?
its always good to see these types of threads in the different phone sections. Definitely a good thing mate, you go for it
I will, just as soon as I can get answers to a few questions first.

I'd like to see a section on Performance mods - overclocking and anything else that can be done to improve performance.
Overclocking is just a matter of installing an app like Set Vsel.
It's not really quite the same as flashing and so on.
don't think the kernel supports overclocking at the moment.. can't get it to go above 1024Khz..
I think it's more a matter of the app being updated to support the Arc but I may be wrong.

No, sadly its not that easy, the kernel restricts the processor from going over that value. Set CPU merely reads that value, to prevent people overclocking 500mhz to 2Ghz and melting there phones.
The kernel needs to be tweaked to allow higher values. But that should be in the pipeline now that bootloaders are unlocked and phones are rooted.

Then how do you explain handsets like the Motorola Defy which can be OCed despite the fact it's impossible to modify the kernel?
I guess Moto mustn't have restricted it in their stock kernel
I guess - though it's not like Motorola to do anything modder-friendly

I love what rooting adds to owning a smart device. If I were to find the time, I would love to develop my own roms even if it was just for personal use. The development is an art in itself that adds so much customization to your device. I honestly admire those that work hard to make their own changes come to light.

One of the best things to do before starting on rooting is read guides, do research and always follow the instructions for each root. The more you know, the less you are likely to make any mistakes. Never rush it.
