Ads everywhere! - Nexus One General

Hello!
since a week I am getting ads in every apps and games:
-Angry birds season
-Christmas wallpapers
-Apn Droid
Is it normal or my N1 got a trojan?

It's normal more and more apps are becoming heavily in tangled with adds. Developers have the choice but once they give the all clear Google takes over and pumps them out. Small price to pay compared to paying for the apps. If you're still worried hook your phone up to your PC and do a full scan the main anti virus will let you scan.

There has been some confirmation that Angry Birds makes $1,000,000/month from those ads, hence why they didn't sell the game. So, going forward you can expect every college kid "dev" with Eclipse and some c/p open source code to slap ads in their app

Nope, AndroidCommunity is reporting that its just the Android ads (here). Their iPhone app is paid, and I don't think they support WP7 yet, and the other couple platforms aren't really significant

If you're rooted a custom hosts file will rid you of most of them. I get no ads at all in angry birds. For some reason weatherbug is the app that seems to sneak the most in on me. Get them there about half the time I open it up. Gonna have to find time to search for a more up to date hosts file to fix that.

What's really annoying is that if I don't have internet connection when I want to play Angry Birds season it will not open new levels

I think the level is downloaded when you unlock it....

Some people can not work for free.
For example with angry birds.
Its the best game i played in a long long long time.
Not just headshootin and headshootin again.
Its simple, has nice looks, attracts the ladies ("hey that looks funny, what is it...can i touch it?"...does this sound wrong?) and so on.
It gave me hours of pleasure...maybe more than the ladies
Yeah whatever, what i want to say:
I don't care about the ads. I don't even recognize them anymore.
And for the angry birds case, they just "earn" it!

In Angry Birds, the ads get in the way of gameplay sometimes. I wish Rovio would offer us a paid version like the iPhone users have.

AdFree.....

root and adfree. lulz, no ads for me any where

This is Google's strategy (hint: how they make almost all their rev.), don't expect Apple like strategy unless apps devs prefer it... fortunately you can disable ads, if you prefer, thanks to configurability of Linux...

Not for me. I've been keeping up with the christmas birds all december, rooted using adfree, no ads to spoil my christmas .

I feel bad about blocking ads. I rarely, if ever click on them. But i feel its part of the deal, i get a free OS and free or low cost software, in exchange for having to see an ad or two around the place. I feel as if i am not holding up my end of the deal.

If I use the software, I buy the paid version. If there's no paid version, then I click the adds. Gotta show the devs some love...

AFAIK devs get paid for clicks, not ad-views. Preventing an app from working without a data connection is pushing it IMO.

I don't mind the ads and I feel its for the betterment of the platform and whole system to attract developers to android.

Angrybirds!

This is under the dev part of the forum because I was going to see if someone could unpack the angrybirds.apk and remove the ad's from the game or if someone could post a early release download before the ad's were implemented. I love this game and I don't want to wait for Rovio to produce a non ad version...anyone?

AdFree, one of the best apps for a rooted phone.
That is stealing!!! Ads are there to supports the developers hard work! They deserve to make money and honestly they are even letting you download it for free, so either you wait until there is a paid version or just dont play at all.
You can just put your phone in airplane mode and the ads won't pop up.

You consider that stealing?....not really since they released the game without ads and then made ads for people to click on which I will never do and if you wanted to really think about "stealing" consider yourself a thief since you hacked your phone and are using apps that aren't approved from the manufacturer and running "illegal apps"...so w/e dude..I've been downloading music and apps off sharing websites like rapidshare since I was like 12 dude...they are stealing from us. These things shouldn't cost as much as they do ie: windows os and microsoft office its just ridiculous and everything else in the world and if that's what you think, like I already said you shouldn't root your phone.

You're not furthering any cause by being cheap. Also rooting one's phone is not piracy. Voiding your warranty won't land you in jail.
Didn't mean to cause such an uproar. The only reason I mention adfree is because you can download it straight from the market. And no you are not stealing the game is free. Period. Like someone said putting your phone into airplane mode gives you the same effect. I am not taking anything from the devs if there is no paid version alternate.

AdFree Android?

Was AdFree android removed from the market??? I can't seem to find it...

Why would you run an app like this? All you're doing is taking away money from developers who make apps that you use. They worked hard on the code, why should you get it for free?
Its all about data man, not getting anything for free. Some apps dont have the option to pay for a key to do so. Plus who actually clicks on the adds anyways, thats the only way to benefit from having them there. Im all about supporting the work of great devs, but i dont like my phone to connect to the web when its totaly unnessescary. Plus its not just for apps, works in the web browser too helping pages with garbage load faster

I mostly use it for web browsing so it doesn't load ads. I don't use many ad-supported apps. Angry Birds is one of the only ones, and it doesn't have a paid version. If I like an app I will buy or donate.
Anyway, I'm new to the Evo (not to Android), and read that the Evo can't have files written to /system unless in bootloader. Is this true??
Root explorer can mount system as read/write if thats what your referring to

Because I don't want ads on my phone. Everywhere I go, everywhere I look there are ads. I pay for cable TV yet I have to watch commercials. There are ads ALL over the internet. My inbox is littered with spam from advertisers selling garbage products that I have no interest in. The last place I want to see ads is on my cell phone. It's not about taking money away from the devs. I have spent over $300 on games and apps from the market, I have no problem at all tossing the devs money for their hard earned work if they give us that option. If they don't, that's not my problem. Besides, it's not like I've ever clicked on a single ad so keeping them on my phone isn't going to give them any more money than if I block them.

Here is the hosts file AdFree uses. I haven't updated database in a couple months, but it works great for me. I would rather not run an app to block sites therefore I just use the hosts file. Simply extract hosts.zip as it IS NOT FLASHABLE, remove old hosts file in /system/etc and push new hosts file to same place. No app needed!

PM me I can send the apk of adfree, I pay for apps too, and pay almost 200/month for service. I also agree I should not have to see ads all over my phone. Id pay for a ad free copy of angry birds, the ads all over the game ruin the game play and get in the way.

You could open file up in notepad and manually add to it, just need to find a good source for a database.

This is wrong. They get paid for views. if your phone never retrieves the ad, they don't get paid for the view.
Not making a statement for or against ads, but at least be accurate.

What the benefit for rooting a tablet?

Just need Pros and cons about rooting a tablet.
My htc hero is rooted so i can do wifi tether,so why i should i root my tablet?
Eventually, new kernels and ROMs will be released that you can install if rooted. Some of the features of these are over/underclocking, ability to remove preinstalled apps, performance and battery life tweaks, ability to run certain apps such as backup apps, screenshot apps, etc, etc, etc.
All in all, it's def worth it.
So far one con would be not being able to use Google's movie rental service.
I agree its worth it but you have to also note that when we get services like Google's movie rental service or Netflix, they don't currently work on rooted devices.

Definitely a plus.
That's not entirely true, Netflix has been running on my rooted CM7 Evo 4G for quite awhile. Google Movies definitely doesn't work on rooted tablets/phones though.
for me, the answer is obvious - peace of mind.
everyone's different though
Edit: also, only a-holes use adfree. developers put a lot of work into their applications and all they ask is that you use a bit of screen space for an ad. is that really too much to ask? if you really can't stand it, most apps have a paid version that remove the ads. just pay the 2 dollars(or whatever) and move on with your life. you were able to spend 5-6 hundred bucks on a device that has no real purpose(maybe there's a few who really need an android tablet, but most people could do almost everything on their phone and they could do everything+more on the computer) so I'm sure you can spend a few bucks on apps. I, for one, like to actually support the developers for my platform. If we don't, people will either not make apps or they'll make them all cost money. I'd much rather just have an ad seeing as how it makes basically no difference to my life.
I'd actually like to see a lot more open-source apps with donation options but that's probably not going to happen..

Instead of using adfree, try buying your apps more often. How is it fair to hard working app devs when you download their free, ad included versions of apps and then run adfree to remove them and have the paid app at no cost? How does that make you any different than a warez using pirate?

Thank you. I'm a developer and yell at my friends that use adFree on their devices. They even use my apps and still have adFree on. I know some apps neither need nor deserve to have Ads but a lot of them out there do. Its the only way we make any money developing FREE apps. We spend 100's of hours making these apps. The least the users can do is deal with a small ad on the screen or purchasing a $.99 app. Pay the freaking dollar. You obviously use the apps.

I don't ever use this app, but I have in the past. I seem to recall it just making the add a blank white box. Does this affect your profits directly, somehow? Or do you mean, that stops people from clicking the ad and buying whatever was showing?
Ahh, the whole ad-blocking debate again.
Personally, as long as unsavory types are still using ads as a way to deliver malware (it started on PCs and now it's moving to Android), I will block them, period. I pay for apps though, so I don't really see what's with the whole 'ad blocker = anti-capitalist free loading scum' attitude, but okay.
Adfree is a gimmick. Not only does it break certain apps, but it still has the placeholder of where the add would come up. However, instead of the image/banner/etc, you get a "?". No thanks! I don't mind helping the devs out!

Well, you can contact them and get a refund. And I don't think you'll make the same mistake twice.
But I can pretty much 99% guarantee in order to get deals to allow renting of movies on the Market, Google had to tell the studios that they wouldn't allow playback on rooted devices. Google is fine with rooted devices, they clearly allow many rooted apps (even apps that root your phone) on the Market. Its the studios that think there's piracy problem and want no playback on rooted phones, even though that's absolutely retarded, but that's how they feel (look at netflix, they were going to require hardware chips for DRM in android phones to get netflix playback at first).
Cool your jets. It'll be a small matter of time before we have the market cracked open and this root check removed so we can use it. If you're rooted you should have no problem waiting for this, you should understand it. The root community won't rage on this, they'll just fix it for themselves as they always do.
Well think of it this way. Either only nonrooted devices get to rent movies, or no android phones get to rent movies. It's not google, but the studios demanding protection from rooted devices copying their films.

The content providers are thinking ENTIRELY too hard about this. Ok, so they could have took his money and he could have somehow pirated it off the phone. First off, there are millions of copies of whatever said media floating around anyways. Second of all, by them NOT letting him get it, he is probably just gonna go pirate it. F-in idiots! They should just take everyone's money and be thankful anyone even WANTS to actually pay for it. On a sidenote, it's been highly publicized that rooted phones were not gonna be aloud to access this new paid content on the market. Unfortunately looks like you missed all those articles lol. And i'm pretty sure i remember reading that it will take your money and then tell you that you can't have it.

Ya really. It drives me nuts that they think they are still in a position to be making such demands. If I were the ceo of one of those company, I would be doing everything humanly possible to make it as EASY as possible to obtain their stuff legit. Instead they still want to candy coat it in drm and put restrictions all over the place. Its not like ten years ago where your average person really only knew how to get music. In this day and age even grandma moses knows how to download a movie. And with xbox, ps3 etc., you don't even have to go through the trouble of converting and burning it anymore! I mean seriously. The movie industry is its own worst enemy. The music industry imo has gotten slightly better, but the movie industry is its own worst enemy. At least with music they allow things like pandora, and now spotify. It really has curtailed a lot of my piracy. But the movie industry is still trying to run with this old model that's just not working. 10 dollars a TICKET? Twenty to buy it? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I LOVE how the price of everything in the world has went up, but the average wage has not went up barely at all. Don't get me started! In america music and movies are creature comforts, and they gotta realize were gonna get them one way or the other. Do u want to sell one movie for 20 dollars to one out of five people? Or sell a movie for 10 dollars to 4 out of 5.

Its pretty clear whats going on here. And anyone on XDA understands that there is 100000% more piracy on computers where they offer this also than there are on phones.
But the studios don't care. They know piracy happens on computers and they're fighting that battle. They know that they can demand Google remove functionality from rooted devices, so they do. They can't stop it on computers, but they can (in their minds) stop it on Android phones.
You guys are expecting the studios to act rationally on this, since when do you expect them to do that? Like I said before 1) Did you really expect the studios to not block this? and 2) The community will crack this in no time, cool your jets.

I apologize to the Mistress in advance for being slightly off topic, but Hulu has gotten just as bad. More and more studios are pulling their day after air streaming and making it exclusive to Hulu+. What they don't understand is after I missed a show I would much rather give them ad revenue by watching on Hulu than by torrenting something. Yet they take that away? Greedy idiots.

You people realize that there has to be something on a phone WITH root compared to a phone withOUT root in order for them to DETECT IT, don't you? What do you suppose that thing is? Probably a command somewhere in the PATH called "su". Want them to not detect that you have root? "mv /path/to/su /path/to/fuisuANYWAY"
will that affect any of the functions of the root?
I don't understand why you're so surprised. This was said would happen when they announced Google Movies in May. Read up.
Why anyone would pay to rent a movie on they're smartphone is beyond me.

mv /system/xbin/su /system/xbin/mu
Hit home than watch your movie or other paid stuff is done, than reload the same terminal session, which still has su permissions
mv /system/xbin/mu /system/xbin/su
Either the videos or youtube app looks for the su binary. Simply renaming or removing it will yield results.
Perhaps the devs will modify the apps to not check. I only found one instance of su in the videos apk, but I really have no idea what I'm doing , just tinkering and exploring. About to check the youtube apk.
Well that works for me for now...just annoying as ****

Truth be told anything that is rent-able in the Android Market is already available on torrents anyway! So to put that restriction on rooted phones is almost laughable, considering anyone who went through the process of rooting is almost assuredly a wiz at torrents!

App Millionaires

Just having a look in the market there and seeing some paid apps that have been downloaded thousands upon thousands of times, the person and/or persons who designed an app(s) that costs money and has been downloaded say 500,000+ times must be a multi millionaire at this stage, in fact the apps market whether it be Android or that other lot is a goldmine for many people if their app is successful,if an app costs say €5 what are the overheads,is there a small fee to be paid to Android for listing the app or how does it work?
I remember last year on XDA a beta was released for Power Amp, i downloaded it and thought "this is a brilliant app, the best music player the best ive used" people urged the guy who designed it to put it on the market,he did and now it has sold bucketloads,so this guy has obviously made a packet from releasing a beta on XDA to a global audience in the market, nice one,im just gutted i never thought of this a few years ago,no recession on with these guys who have made mega money from apps alone.

they get that much that's absolute madness i thought it would be like 5%, still and all there are bound to be many multi millionaires, ive often wondered about free apps/games that are popular take for example that angry birds game which is immensely popular but is free, am i to assume these guys don't make any money or do they somehow?

People that put out "free apps" make money with the ads that run in their apps. Atleast I think thats how it works... LOL...

Ads, Ads and Ads. These 'free' apps are loaded with advertising and the maker of said apps gets paid a small amount of money everytime an ad is displayed while the user runs the app. So instead of being paid just once they get a constant revenuestream. Albeit it only works if your customer are actually using the app which doesn't seem to be a problem for the Angry Bird guys ^^. (They are also getting money by selling their games on iOS btw.)
I never take any notice of the ads anyway, in fact i have the ad blocker app on my GS2 but it doesn't always work but i never even look at the ads.
F**k me first you had the .com millionaire now you have the "apps" millionaires, why did i mis out on both of these

And if it's AdMob (most likely) adverts, Google keeps the lion's share of per-click revenue.
