[Q] Need your opinions on the Dell Streak running android 2.2 - Streak 5 General

I am thinking of buying a Dell Streak running android 2.2 and would appreciate it if you could give me your opinion on whether to buy it or not.
I normally just use phones to surf the web, text, listen to music, and games.

Love the streak. Perfect device for web surfing and general use. It's a speedy phone and I haven't run into any problems. Battery life is pretty decent as well. Also if you are concerned about it fitting in your pocket, I wear skinny jeans and it fits fine.

Does Google Maps work with T-Mobile 2G edge network for the streak? I was looking at it on Dell's website and it says that 3G is required for connection on the navigation.

I don't know about the Google maps on T-mobile but the Streak is great for web browsing, text, email videos. I haven't played many games on mine other than angry birds which plays perfectly. I love my streak.

Dell Streak

Hi there,
Jst got my Streak on Friday. It's totally amazing, you won't be dissapointed when you get one. There is only slight problem in that it's doesn't play AVI files, if it did then it would be 10/10
Does anyone know of an AVI player for Android
Many thanks and go out and get a streak!
yxplayer plays avi, but not very well and it costs money. There is also a chinese one that plays avi, but its really too buggy right now and rarely actually works. Are there any phones that can play high quality AVI files?
I think your best option right now is to convert to MP4 format.
PS: Go here for an active Streak forum! Hopefully XDA will get a dedicated forum soon!
Many thanks
Hi there thanks for the info,
I thought that converting them to MP4 might be the only answer, shame as I've always been a Windows phone user and never had the avi problem. But then been waiting n waiting on the streak and decided to take the jump to Android. Have to say LOVE IT! you have to love the STREAK.
YOu must have left the link of to the Streak thread, off to look for it.
Once again many thanks

Congrats! I'm a big fan of the Streak =)

Yes please. The phone was just released and just in the UK and as such wont be extremely popular until its released more worldwide. Already though it has been rooted and it would be nice to have a forum here for that information along with rom releases.
+1 for this please !
Very interested in this phone myself. Would love to see a section for it please.
Its a mighty thing, but needs the 2.1 or 2.2 update to be fully realised. This will happen soon andi cant wait for it.
Here it is next to an HD2, its big, but still pocket friendly..ish.
Its the size that I'm interested in. I'm partially sighted and the HTC Touch Pro is to small for all it can do I think.
Its either this the Desire of an iPhone next.
Forget the iPhone then. The new one may have a huge resolution, but the screen is puny.
The Dell screen is about the same size as an entire HD2 or Evo. Its very big and essy to read.
Its ok in daylight, but no better than most LCDs id say.
The 3GS iPhone is OK, I liked the clarity of the screen and it works good in daylight. Mate has a Desire and says you can't see anything in sunny light on the screen.
I've not seen a Dell in the flesh yet.
Were can I buy the handset without plan?

This is a gsm phone correct? I bought my htc hd2 in the uk and use it on ATT in the USA. Will this work the same?

yes. Streak will be released in US next both ( ATT version)
I don't want to buy the dell Streak from ATT. I like being carrier independent. I like using my MIFI from verizon for my internet.
Any smart phone bought from ATT forces a ATT data plan on the user. When I buy a non carrier GSM phone I can just slip in the sim card and go.
My MIFI from verizon is a WIFI device. This enables my phone for data, and lets me use it for many other uses.
The price differential is $9.00 a month.
So where can I buy the Dell Streak carrier independent?
Dell will be selling a unlocked version on it's web site soon.
Yes I love my dell streak had it for a week now and ever since i had it i haven't used my 3gs much apart as an ipod. I think its still very early stages and hope dell can push some updates out as soon as possible.
I believe only running froyo 2.2 will do it any street justice. It will be complete after that.
I'm thinking about dell streak can it be unlocked easily un the UK? Plus ant idea how much dell will be selling unlocked version?

Thinking of buying a Dell Streak

Hi.
I'm quite impressed by the freaking huge screen on the Dell Streak but have a few concerns when it comes to Data Usage...
The plan Im looking at for it (Optus) only has 2GB Data. Would I go over this if I just use Facebook, MSN and occasional Google Maps day after day on it? I rarely download music and don't watch any streaming content. Might take a look at CNN or The Australian once in a while.
Or am I better off with a Blackberry Torch on unlimited BIS (Data) plan?
EDIT: Oh and I've never used Android before.
I can say with certainty, if you do not download music or movies... no way you'll exceed 2gb. You wont even exceed 500kb.
Save your downloading for WiFi and you're fine.
PS: I have 1gb plan and EASILY stay under that.

For media/web experience, blackberry doesn't compare... and it is not even close.

I got a 500mb on mine and was concerned it wouldn't be enough. But turns out im only using 250-300 a month. If you are really concerned just download net.counter to.keep track of it.

[Q] Which GPS is best for G.Tab??

Hey,which GPS software is good for G.Tab??Beside the stock GPS provide by TAB??
I have a tab on order but haven't gotten it yet. However, I have used copilot live on my g1, original mytouch, behold 2, and on my vibrant, and it works very well. It isn't free, but you download the maps to your sd card, so the gps works whether you have a data connection Or not... even in airplane mode.

I use NavDroyd From the market. It costs about $6 USD but well worth the money. Its not as feature filled at the big name packages, but serves my purposes well. It includes global map that you can download regions partially or in full. My only complaint is that it doesn't have street address info to search on, so I plan ahead and do it in Google Maps, then set a pin to the address in NavDroyd.
Another minor annoyance is it doesn't navigate you down one way roads properly. I found out the hard way in Manhattan last week
I still love it though. It gets updated often and keeps getting better.
I beleive for asean region. . . PAPAGO X5 is the only one good to go. However the navigation seems to be a bit out for our Tab. It brings u all over the place instead of a straight road. I am wondering why becos on another Android device it works well. All settings are the same

I've tried CoPilot and Sygic Mobile Maps 10 in the UK and CoPilot wins hands down between the two. Sygic does not scale properly on the Tab and isn't designed to use the soft keys for Menu etc. CoPilot looks excellent on the large screen.
try sygic aura 2.o its work perfectly on gtab

I didn't realise Aura was now available for Android. I might take a look at that.
I got Copilot Live 8 working last night. Looks quite good but it is rather slow, at least feels slower than on N1.
Just saw that copilot live has done special pricing for thanksgiving... north american version is 9.99, and the usa only version is just 2.99(i paid 29.99 for my copy of the NA maps 2 years ago)... I went ahead and bought the usa version last night even though I already have the north america version for my vibrant so that I can run one on my tab when I get it, and still be able to use the other on my vibrant... I've been happy with it on all of my android phones so far, I hope it runs as nicely on the tab...

I've been using Navigon in the US and it works very well on the tab
Now that you guys mentioned GPS programs for the tab, i will be going to the states for a month and a half ( yes really good vacations ), and since i am based on greece, i want a gps program that i can pre-cache maps on it without using my data plan since we all know that roaming charges are over the roof.
So i was watching closely at Google Maps that a user called Brut, modified and it supposedly run pre-cached maps on all zoom levels 0-14 from andnav and you can even download the tiles and put them on the sdcard and have them.
Well i dont really wanna bother the dudes at his thread because its somehow 300+ pages, and i wanna ask if someone else used it because i am gonna try it and see if it works.
Any help is appreciated.

Just buy it whilst it's that cheap as it won't stay at that price for long (Thanksgiving sale).

It can pre-cache maps and use turn-by-turn directions ?
Strange thing happened to me.
I just got a german SGT and D/L latest firmware (via kies - XXJK5)
I installed a Navigon .apk that I found somewhere and it automatically D/L'd and installed all the maps for Australia and NZ for free. Nice app as well.

Looking to buy a dell streak need some advice.

I've been around android since android first came out and plan on sticking with android for a long time. I currently own a rooted nexus one and I'm thinking about switching to a dell streak. I don't mind the big size of the phone for I'm the type that figures the bigger the better. Here's a few questions that I have. (I'm also aware that the streak only as of right now runs froyo 2.2)
1. Is it worth the switch from a nexus one to the streak?
2. Is the streak capable to handle a 3.0 honeycomb upgrade?
3. What a some major cons about the streak that you experienced user's feel are worth sharing?
4. Is the streak worth rooting? And why?
I'll google that and get back to you.
Edit: Never mind: Click Here
Nice one MOD EDIT. Keep your comments to yourself.
I can't help you with #1 or #2 - I simply don't know the answers. (I've never used a Nexus One.)
Strictly considering it as a phone, it's a big hunk of glass and a little unwieldy to use. The ergonomics are clunky (try holding a PopTart up to your ear) and the proximity sensor on mine is hit or miss. (e.g. when I take the phone off of my ear to delete a voice mail, the screen often stays dark.)
Whatever issues I have with it as a phone are more than made up for everywhere else. The 5" screen is the perfect portable, pocketable tablet size. Beautiful screen, easy to be productive on in terms of email, reviewing documents, etc. It's replaced my Tab as my portable/couch-surfing tablet and my Garmin as an in-car GPS - I think it's as versatile a gadget as I've ever had.
As for rooting the Streak, I guess it depends on what you'd like to do with it. I rooted mine, but just to enable tethering.
Just asking a question, no meed to be MOD EDIT about it.

Are you with at&t? If so what bandwidth limit does at&t cap you at? I know T-Mobile caps you at 5GB.
Tbh. I agreed with Marvin's post. Google is your friend. Indeed, the search function is an even better friend.
Edit: once you've used the streak, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it.

I have an unlocked version, but I use it on AT&T - I have the unlimited data plan they used to sell with the iPhone.
I'm not completely current with their data plans, but I think they are relatively reasonable.
The streak is great, i almost don't use my netbook anymore. The camera is not great, and the speaker is not great for media (but wait till you see the video). Also, I'm getting the impression that its pretty delicate, so don't drop it!
Its very thin and about the size of your pocket, you you almost don't know its in there.
Of course you will want to root it, why not? You will need to upgrade the ROM if it comes with 1.6, which is just horrible. I'm using DJ_Steve's custom ROM, almost as much of an upgrade as coming from 1.6. Just fantastic...

I second that one. I didn't own Nexus One, but during last two years I used G1, iPhone, n900 and now Dell Streak. When I look at G1 it just looks so tiny now. Dell Streak definitely catches attention
I cant say much about phone function, I just don't use phone any more, but as all-around internet device I'm very happy with it. For browsing net, news, IM, apps large screen does big difference in my opinion, and you can still fit it into jeans pocket, if you don't have these tiny-tiny pockets.
I personally don't see any major drawbacks of this device. Maybe docking station is little expensive.
I have both and use them both regularly. Mostly I use the nexus for when I need something great and small. I use he Streak for mostly everything else. I have yet to be throttled by att and have had some huge months. I use them both as the internet connection for my OQO model 02 at work so I can complete my college assignments. If you have any questions pertaining to either or both just pm me and I will get you what I can. Its worth it, I even got my wife the white one from best buy. I think it will be able to handle honeycomb but can't be sure. Also it will be weather or not someone is willing to make a rom.

1. Used both and like streak better. faster and love the screen estate
2.I think so , but wouldnt want to go there until it offers something that is substantially bigger. Going from 1.6 to 2.2 was huge and was needed . However from 2.2 to 3. dont know
3.Very little support from developers. Except for steve( and fards) and his company , none...
I wish more developers come here( however must add that steve and fards is doing a great job. this is a great device.
4.Absolutely.. any android device for that matter.
Must add that : This device is larger than a normal smartphone and u will love it if u have a big hand... I have had many of my friends who had difficulty with size.
I had a rooted nexus one on tmo. The streak offers practically everything the n1 does. The only benefits n1 has over streak that is worth mentioning is more baked roms, and it gets first dibs on updates.
Btw att cap is 2gb. Its a joke if youre a heavy user or plan on tethering.

I've owned both, nexus was fun until it decided to blow up on a brotha. The streak is everything one would ever ask for in a phone. And the wow factor is insane. Most people don't believe its a phone until u prove it lol. The only problems for me are the lack of development from attention and a few hardware incapatabilities with a few apps(chase). So of course u must root and Dj steve and creek are amazing. Been running 1.6.1 since release with no problems. LOVE THIS PHONE!!!

I have unlimited as most people who have owned smartphones n the past should also have. I heard somewhere that attention doesn't offer unlimited anymore, if that's true then that's just wrong. No way u can truly get the most out of these type phones if u don't have unlimited data.

Yes, att does NOT offer unlimited data anymore. Honestly tho, I had unlimited data on tmo, att, and sprint and Im a pretty heavy user, but I dont think I ever broke the 2gb point (came close to it). However I SHOULD add that I dont really youtube or pandora on the go, and also im straight wifi as soon as I get home from school or work.
I was worried when I jumped back to att with the cap, but when I started monitoring my usages, most of em were at home so I dont worry anymore. But if youre the type that has to stream music or movies regularly on the go, or dont have wifi access, then stay away from these data cap plans.

I've hit my 5GB limit last month with T-Mobile and fear that 2GB might not be enough for me lol. By reading all these posts I see that there are more pros then cons with this device and that more people are happy with it. I called at&t and asked them about getting more then 2GB from them and they told me its going to cost $10 per gigabyte a month. Here's my other question. What are your monthly bills looking like? Are you guys paying more then $100 a month with your plans? And which plan is more worth going with? I've been with T-Mobile for 6 years and don't wanna regret switching to at&t.
Can't comment on the Nexus one...
The Streak is an awesome take anywhere device. Its one of a kind right now.

If you are switching from T-mobile then you will miss the customer service and the billing with t-mobile is very consistent. I had switch to at&t because the signal with t-mobile was non existent in rural cities and highways in mississippi. I will say i miss my old t-mobile plan. $94 dollars for unlimited everything and that included tax. My bill is like $115 with taxes with AT&T. I say if you are trying to switch to AT&T you must follow my checklist:
1.Bring in your own device so you are not binded to a contract.
2.Browse the ebay or other sites for people trying to transfer their service that have the unlimited data.
3.Make sure you prepare to see a higher bill by budgeting.

I'll Have To Admit! Dell Streak Is Bad Ass! And Here Is Why!

My latest discovery of tTorrent pro and transdroid has sent me to love this device even more. Its like my little personal computer... A downloading machine. While having an Unlimited plan and being already over 50gb its kinda of fun. I mean wherever I go I can locate anything I need atm.
Ofcourse the big screen for the latest movies via MX Player or Mobi Player is really great with the large screen.
Tethering via Portable Hot spot is awesome...
Amazon mp3, kindle, shopping and a free app every day ...
Emulaters and Games nice and big is always nice...
Sirus XM Radio ...
Color Note for all my basic note needs ...
I mean what am I going to do when my Streak breaks and I can no longer get another one? Also I wonder if one day I will have to upgrade to 4g LTE and my 3g Unlimited Data plan will not bridge over to or turn into 4g LTE Unlimited Data plan. What if I just buy a 4g LTE device and pop my SIM card in it I wonder if that would work. I have Unlimited Smartphone plan not a specific speed plan.
Well Anyways hope you had fun reading my posts or any other of my posts. Tell me why you like your Dell Streak ...
Last note though I do agree with a lot of members here that the dell streak should have continued because like they said I get the same exact thing to this day. What kind of phone is that? WoW that is nice and big also sleek. I really think if Dell positioned it better and opened it to more carriers it would be a much more success.
Best,

I love my streak! its the best phone I've ever used, for personal use...
It's snappy! Currently, I use a motorola atrix for my work phone... only because my dell streak does not meet the security standards for my corporate email, but that is the only reason. I think my Streak is just as snappy as my Atrix, and given the larger screen size.. It's fantastic!
I even went as far as to buy two additional streaks, for if and when I break the one I'm using.
Thank goodness for DJ Steve's GB build! I'm crazy excited to see what he can do with ICS!
