[Q] Pressreader and The Times UK - Galaxy Tab General

Hi,
Just looking for a little help. I have been using my Times.co.uk newspaper subscription flawlessly through pressreader on my tab for just over a month. Inexplicably it stopped working a few days ago and now whenever I attempt to re-authorize my account I just get a "Couldn't establish connection to the network" error.
I've done a factory reset on my tab, the rest of it's internet connectivity is perfect so this seems like an issue with pressreader. Samsung support didn't actually seem to know what the Galaxy Tab was let alone pressreader, the Times just told me it should be working and pressreader/press display's support is poor to non-existant.
Has anyone else managed to keep their Times uk newspaper subscription working with their Galaxt Tab and pressreader?
Thanks for any advice,

I have the same or similar problem.
I can't add my times account nor can I authorise my Tab with PressDisplay.
In other words, when I go into accounts I only have the IMEI number and a single authorise. When I select authorise I can enter my username ans password but I then just get the same error as you.
I have no way to add my times account because nothing happens when I select the menu button.

Same issue with me on my Galaxy Tab. Have emailed PressDisplay but no reply as yet.
Anyone else got one?

I don't have a full Times subscription (just at the weekend), so I'm not expecting to get the Times in PressDisplay.
I do hace a PD subscription, however, that works fine on my iPhone, but I cannot authorise the Tab. I see a "Processing" dialog, followed by a "Couldn't establish connection to the network". Grr.
I've also emailed PressDisplay, and will report back as and when I receive a reply.
The seven trial issues downloaded perfectly.

I finally got to the root of why my Times subscription worked initially then stopped. The Times were caught out by the launch of the Gtab, but once they realized it was out and shipping with Press Reader, they quickly moved to specifically ban the device from accessing user subscriptions to their papers to protect the profitability of their ipad application - very kind of them.... this is why you get the "can not establish connection to the network error"
I have had this confirmed by both the Times (who issued me with an apology and complete refund on my subscription costs) and the support folks at Press Display.
It's a shame as for £8 a month it was great value, the only quality broadsheet now available (in the uk) is the Telegraph, but Press Display's odd subscription policies now make it cheaper and more sensible to just buy the paper at 90p an issue from your local news agent.
There's nothing quite like progress!

GPRS connection doesn't work after being connected for a long time

Hi,
I'm using a Magician with WM2003
I have a GPRS connection setup for with t-mobile using a proxy.
If I'm not connected it works great- I press send/receive for my e-mail it connects and gets my messages just fine.
If I do it again 5 minutes later also fine.
The problem is after a long time the connection is still active, but when I go to do a Send/Receive-
I get an "unable to connect to the incoming mail server" message. All my other internet apps also will not work. If I turn on flight mode and then turn it off (to disconnect from my GPRS connection) and then try the internet again- it will work fine.
I think what triggers this is going into an area with no service. The GPRS connection stays active- and when I try to use it (even when I'm back in an area with service) it won't work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Daniel
I found this, may help ....
Look for "KeepAliveTime" on the right side of this page
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa915651.aspx
It may help, good luck!
I have this same issue with the htc touch. Not sure what to do about it. I see the keepalivetime but it isn't a hack or a reg edit (that I can tell).

anyone having this kind of an issue on your htc touch?

Exactly the same here - issues with push mail and when using messenger have to turn flight mode on and off to reconnect to the service - only been like this for few weeks now - never used to be a problem before
So it looks like T-mob have changed something recently. I have been searching various forums trying to find an answer but no luck. TMob reckon nothing has changed when i called them.
I too have the same problem and I am also on t-mob UK.
I will call Tmob again tomorrow and hopefully get through to someone in their tech dept. I knew it had to be Tmob, I had changed nothing on my handset, but they refused to acknowledge that anyone else had a problem.
I use cingular/att with these issues so it's not just tmobile.

You are not alone here....... nearly every day a soft reset
Also the same with my trinity - but not so often
Having spoken to T-Mob UK, the general thinking is they are imposed restrictions on usage for the basic walk and web service. This includes IMessenger and push e-mail (I knew about IM bit not Push Mail!)
The engineer seems to think the connection will be frozen if the network detects
a IM service (the heatbeat of push mail mail looks to be included in this).
Solution: Upgrade to Walk and Web Plus (extra £5) per month.
I have been given a free month to try and see if this solves my issues. I will let you know how it goes.
Now this could be T-mob fobbing me off and trying to get an extra five quid off me, lets wait and see. Any of you guys on the plus service already??
I was guessing that might be the case, let know how it goes if I need to upgrade
I use the mediamax bundle with cingular/att. I wonder if this is indeed the case. I would need to upgrade to the pda plan, which would be pricey. Mabey that's the case?
Well, I'm afraid it was a nice story that Tmob told me, but it hasn't sorted the problem! I will keep an eye on it over the next few days just in case it takes a few days to set their end, but as of today I still loose connection.
OK, finally got it sorted....! I have GPRS connected all the time now without loosing connection.
Looks like T-mob were telling me the truth. After talking to a T-mobile engineer, he confirms that they now have the network infrastructure to detect and block services that are not covered in certain WnW packages. This went live just over a month ago.
The basic WnW package does not allow Push Email & IM, if detected the network will block your IP. Turning off and on the radio will give you a new IP, so will work again until detected.
For Push Email you will need the WnW plus service. Now the interesting part is if you add on the plus service (a bolt on) it will still not work. You will need to add the package onto your contract not as a bolt on.
Many people have just paid extra for the bolt on but the T-Mob system doesnt recognise this and still blocks Push Mail & IM.
It doesnt cost any extra or change your contract length, its just a different way the customer service people upgrade your account.
Unfortunately the customer service rep that upgraded my account did not know this, but the engineer new straight away.
Hope this helps people.
Thanks for the info.....I use ATT/Cingular. What are the odds they started this same thing a month ago? I've been noticing this problem for about that length of time.
Hi all!
It´s the same for me
I´m using Eplus with Cortado email push in Germany
Every morning a soft reset
Any solutions possible within the registry

Problems with Windows Live Messenger on 3UK

Just installed Windows Live Messenger on my Hermes with WM6 and when I try to sign in I get this message:
"There is a problem with the server. Please try again later"
I can log in using eBuddy. Is this a problem with WLM or is it 3UK?
Cheers

www.3mobilebroadband.com
www.3mb.co.uk/forums
I've got the same problem with my Trinity on swedish 3.
I just called their tech support, and according to them it should be working just fine...
I've had a call logged with Three for weeks now, and to be frank, their Indian call centre makes a chocolate teapot in the middle of a Sahara desert look like a positively sensible idea.
They keep coming back saying that they can’t help, because the TYTN II isn’t a “3G” phone (meaning a THREE BRANDED PHONE) (they don’t seem to understand the difference between “Three” and “3G”)
So, as a first off, (as this is the only reproducible easy error I’ve found so far), can I ask you to try going to www.zdnet.co.uk and see if you get a web page or and error. If you get the same error as me, which is “Request Error (Invalid Request)” then it will give me a bit more evidence to go and beat them up over again as H3G are ADAMANT that they do not block ports and don‘t monitor traffic, however, I believe they have a bluecoat proxy server monitoring everything, and they are notoriously easy to stuff up if you don’t know what you are doing with them.
Anyway, on to the Messenger problem…..
From my testing so far…….
Test 1
If you have even so much as a whiff of a Three SIM in the phone, it won’t connect to messenger over the Three Data connection OR over Active Sync.
If you connect it up over active sync or wireless with either the radio (i.e. phone) disabled, or without a Three SIM card, Messenger WILL connect using your alternative data connection (e.g. ADSL connection)
Conclusion - A Three SIM card some how stuff’s messenger (Seen a similar thread with a Vodafone SIM, but I don’t have one of those to test with).
Test 2
If you pop a T-Mobile or Orange SIM in the phone and perform the same tests, messenger is fine over either active sync, wireless or the Mobile operators data connection. Conclusion - This backups the previous conclusion that having a Three (H3G) SIM in there kills messenger.
(At this point, if anyone from marketing at T-Mobile or Orange is reading, if either of you will offer the same data mobile broadband data tariff (obviously in a working format) as Three on PAYG, we will ALL drop H3G quicker than that chocolate teapot will melt).
Test 3
Three are various custom versions of WindowsLive.cab knocking around and some of the earlier ones will actually connect (even with a Three SIM card installed) and actually work, however the Live Mail part then gets stuffed, as its not got all the features of the current Live, with the Push Mail, and the download options, but it does give a Conclusion that earlier Live messenger clients will connect.
The later ones (including Dutty’s ones) still fail to connect, so Dutty, if you are reading, and have any ideas, please feel free to chip in.
Test 4
MSN Mobile (NOT live version)
I found an earlier version of MSN Mobile, and this seems ok ish (i.e. messenger will connect, but again, you lose the nice push mail functionality)
Other Tests,
I’ve tried various combinations of various Radio and OS Rom’s and live.cab installs, without success.
Tests I’d like to try, but don’t have the hardware for
The one test I haven’t been able to try yet (and would like to) is seeing if messenger can be made to connect from a non Three device (i.e. my TYTN II, or your Hermes) whilst using a proper Three Connection.
i.e. Messenger on my TYTN II, going through Active Sync to a laptop, which in turn is connected to the Internet via a Three branded phone or USB Dongle. If That fails to connect, then it’s a fair conclusion that Three do in fact block ports, as the Dongle would be doing the connection. If it worked, then it would be fair to say that the actual SIM is causing the problem. Either Way, it would be really good solid evidence to go and get support to actually take notice.
Which would lead onto another Test, which is if there are any Three Users out there who it works, for, trying you SIM in either of our devices to prove if its some Three SIMS that are actually causing the problem.
(In techie speak, does anyone know if its possible from a SIM card to have a hosts file, or do port redirection ON THE SIM?)
I work up in London, so if by any chance, you are in that Area, please PM me, and maybe we can meet up to try and come up with ideas.
Hi gjbird999,
well i have done a few tests as suggested by you:
www.zdnet.co.uk returns "Request Erroe (invalid_request)"
WiFi ON/phone function OFF/3UK sim in - MSN messenger fails to connect.
WiFi ON/3UK sim removed - MSN messenger connects successfully!
WiFi ON/phone function OFF/3UK sim back in - MSN messenger connects successfully!
WiFi off/phone function ON/3UK sim in - MSN messenger fails to connect.
i guess this kinda proves that 3UK is blocking the ports either by mistake or deliberately the thing is MSN Live can connect to my hotmail mailbox ok to check email etc, just won't connect to MSN messenger.
I have tried calling the 3UK customer service for some other problems before and lets just say that it was amuzing enough to try get them to understand the problem let alone sorting it....
i hope you can get somewhere with them! keep us posted please!
In a sweidish TyTn II forum we are alot of people that gets the error msg There is a problem with the server. Please try again later..
Its been like this for 3-4 weeks..
I have Tre and its still not working
I have a Swedish Tele2 business telephone subscription and i can connect to MSN Live without any problems. However I got a nag about 30 days trial when starting MSN Live the first time, isn't MSN Live for free?
Edit: Tele2 is the part of Comviq used mainly by business users...
I get the same message on 3UK, strange that a sim cardstops you from using MSN when your connected via wifi!

well i am not entirely sure about this because I did managed to connect after reinstalling the sim with the phone boot up without the phone function on, but if i just switch the phone function off then try connect with WiFi without rebooting the phone, it won't connect
using WiFi is not so much use for me because if i can access wifi, it would probably means i am at home already! I guess i can always use the webmsn but that kinda sucks...
Three tech support is on hold, and I'm back to M$ basing at the moment. But I'll try to get into the local 3 store and see what zdnet does on their "open access" 3g Cards that are totally unresticted
hiya, just wanted to post up as im in the exact same boat, 3uk contract using my own htc hermes. having the exact same problems with live as has been described here. so good luck ! if you want any help with anything i'll be happy to help
same problem in italy!!
Ive got live installed on schaps rom -
It seems MICROSOFT now want to charge me for using it - I keep getting a message saying I can use for 30 days trial period and then will have to BUY a pass to keep going.
Cmon ms Btards whats going on.
Anyone else getting this.
will think twice when upgrade time comes if it isnt free
Jon
After first emailing me back saying there were no problems, and was all my fault for not setting up the phone properly M$$$$$$$ admit there MIGHT be a problem their end (or at least with their crappy software)

I'm also on 3UK. I was using windows live messenger fine on my E65 (not the crappy version they give you) up until about a month ago. and since switching to my hermes, I also haven't been able to use msn messenger.
i suspect its all down to 3UK.
i only say this because on my E65, no updates were installed, it just one day stopped working
just want to make an update, my SPV M3100 on 3UK network is now able to connect to MSN again, I haven't changed any settings on the phone at all, so i guess it is either 3UK sorted out their porting issues or MS did... just glad it is working again!!
As is mine

Tmobile claims no tethering? Mine works, with questions.

I had the orig Dash, and have had the 3g for several months now. To explain my issue and pose questions I must give brief history...
With my original Dash I could, as tmobile advertised use it tethered. Everthing worked fine except for my company Cisco VPN client. The utility would connect but no web pages would work. Upon calling support I worked with a guy who "fixed it" and 6 hours later it all worked. Something about how the Cisco VPN could detect dynamic IP's and he needed to provision a static one.
Fast forward and I got the 3G version. Tethering worked fine (even though not listed as a function) but the same VPN issue occured. I made several LONG calls to tmobile (their support was clueless) unitl I got them to give me to the same dept I had spoke with before, the modem team in Seattle. The tech informed me and read direct from tmo documents that tethering did not work, was not supported period. When I explained that it worked fine, they said maybe for a while but not for long. In asking what the prev tech had done to get my last phone to work with VPN, there were no notes and the tech said that it must have been a non-tmobile supported hack.....
Consequently when I swap in my sim to the old phone I can hit the VPN just fine.
A few hours later I get text messages from tmobile with the following message:
<sispWJ9fQmdGCQ3FF4N:1:1>https://snapinprod.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/;764;15033171774;IcKxmDmVuMy6OuNNip8DSb8hwhHX/6lR
I opened it on a computer and nothing comes up. I have a feeling that this might disable my tethering ability?
Here are my questions:
1. How will Tmobile disable this function? Can they push out code? Hide in an update? Is their a reversal for this?
2. Any ideas on what they did or what I can do to allow me to use my VPN?

Problems Activating Samsung Galaxy Tablet...

This is more of an informative post for anyone who finds themselves in a situations similar to what I was in. This weekend I purchased the Verizon 3G Galaxy Tablet. When I purchased it I opted NOT to pay for a data plan for the device as I was planning on just tethering it to my cell phone when wifi was not available.
The problem with this is on first boot the device attempts to register and activate itself but ONLY via 3G service. If you do not have a 3G data plan it simply fails and will never let you get past the register screen. The next day I took it back to the store where I purchased it from very pissed off and was show a trick to get around the registration screen in the event that I ever factory reset my device.
If you find yourself in a similar situation here are the steps necessary to get past the screen.
1. Attempt the register the device via 3G and let it fail.
2. While viewing the failed registration message hit the following button sequence:
Volume Up Once
Volume Down Twice
Volume Up Three Times
Volume Down Four Times
After that it will take you to the finish screen with out registering your device and finally let you log into the system. From there you can configure a wifi network and rerun the setup wizard to register your device if you want to.
Thanks,
whit3fir3
I own a Sprint version and this doesnt work on it
Sent from my SPH-P100 using XDA App
Interesting. I purchased my Verizon version of the tab on launch day and they would not sell it to me unless I purchased at least the first month of data service so that they could activate it. Big fight in the store over this.
Wplangan,
Yeah I had the same argument at the Verizon store I went to. The agreement ended with me telling them to go screw themselves and then walking across the street to BestBuy and getting the exact same tablet from there with no questions or data plan requirements. Only problem I had was the activation (since I did not want to purchase 3G service). Once I figured out how to bypass that so I could setup a WIFI network and then register the device, everything has worked great.
Thanks,

Well, u couldn't perhaps devuldge such knowledge to a fellow wifi only opted before designed galaxy galaxy conasuer? This a burden and objective of mine since the firtst GT release upon my first start up....I was appreiciative of the potential of my new devise at heart and nearly content just minimizing.....I welcome any wisdom or exsperience in advancing my situation...it certainly wasn't free I shun any such factory tyrany or forceful ideas

Shield + VPN

I sideloaded IPVanish on my Shield device and all was working well. However, I later had to do a hard reset. After setting everything up again, I now have a problem where although I connect to a vpn server I have no internet access. All is back to normall when I disconnect from the vpn server. Tried YouTube, Play Store, Kodi (which doesn't even load past the initial gray screen before showing the Kodi Krypton splash). None work!
When I connect to a server initially, my IP address stays the same until I change to a different menu, then it does reflect the new IP corresponding to the server. It does show that data is being uploaded and downloaded, but it's minimal kb.
I have tried multiple different versions of the APK but have found none of them work anymore. I have done and tried the exact methods I have seen online and on numerous YouTube videos, but clearly something is wrong with my settings that I can't seem to find.
Anyone have any ideas or previous experience? Thanks!
**Sidenote - I've also noticed that when I sideload any apps now through ES File Explorer the initial screen that loads up shows the app icon, the install/cancel buttons, but no details in the middle....
Does this Provider impose limits on how many installs you can have running? Perhaps you need to log into your Account, and see about removing such Ghost Devices that are eating into that limit..
It's a problem I have recently ran into with KeepSafe's VPN Unlimited. Alas they will only allow you to remove only the One Device per Week though.

Thanks for the reply! That's a great idea and I thought something similar. I went to IPVanish website a few days ago when this first happened, but there's nothing about the devices I use. Good news is that while it's one of the highest rated providers there's no number to call and it's been 4 days without a response to my first inquiry to them. So frustrating! Maybe on their end it has something like that and they clear out every few days hopefully if this is the case.

***UPDATE***
Well, it's ridiculously quirky but I figured out how to get it to work! I have to pick a specific server, then leave the app, then go back to it and it finally changes IP address and gives me internet!
My only persistent problem now is Kodi, which loads properly with no VPN connected but gives me a gray screen otherwise. UGH!
Not sure what the problem is. But for the nSATV I would recommend KeepSafes' (VPN Unlimited), which is only 26€'s for a whole Year, or about 100€ (or so), for a lifetime. And unlike your solution... It hasn't really ever screwed with my Systems nearly as much as whatever your running has. Such issues, that I do have with it are with both Amazon, and Netflix, which don't overly care for an active VPN much.
I'm not here to drive up sales for KeepSafe. (Perhaps your Provider offers a better service. Which they should seeing as they cost over 3x as much! Over a year.), It's just the first Provider I came across in the PlayStore, and FWIW have been nothing but, happy with them.
