[Q] Problems achieving a good internet speed - HD2 General

After few weeks of searching for the right answer in here and everywhere, I gave up,so I have to ask you guys what kind of the problem do you think I have!
So, first of all,I have the HD2 without the branding T-Mobile on the upper front, but after a soft reset I see the stick together pink logo, so I presume it is a T-Mobile device!
Then I have to say the ROM is not cooked, on Connections I have "Enable HSDPA/HSUPA" checked, on band and network, both of them are on Auto (I've play with both of them but no changes)..the 3G is enabled on Comm.Manager
My problem is I'm ALWAYS getting an Edge sign on signal strenght(South Rainbow Blvd or on the strip-for those who are living in Vegas),my internet speed is a little bit bellow bad(no matter what browser I'm using)all the programs that require a internet connection are also very slow,BUT, on mobilespeedcheck.com(or net?)I am getting something above 3G(Evdo/Hsdpa),getting sometimes speeds very close to Broadband.Maybe I should tell you that on T-Mobile data/sign coverage my home is listed as very good signal(dark red)...and my Radio is 2.10.50.26, ROM 2.13.531.1(90063).
Hoping I'll receive some advices from you guys I hope you'll all have a good day/night and thank you!

Sorry to break it to you...but you don't have a T-Mobile US device...you have an international HD2 with a T-Mobile USA stock ROM applied. You will NEVER get anything above EDGE using T-Mobile USA service with an international device, as the bands that they can use are different. The only way to get 3G in the US out of an international HD2 is to use it on AT&T.

Thank you, man!...But can you tell me why I'm getting those speeds over the mobile speed tests?....'cause that thing I don't understand...and do you know from your personal experience if AT&T internet is worth the sweat to move(like coverage, signal strenght....)
Thanks again for your time

Cingular 8525

Hi
I have a cingular 8525 with use on Cingular and here is my problem i am in a area that has 3G coverage and i do not get 3G signal unless i am in my kitchen of my home.
a friend of mine has a 3G phone also and he can get 3G signal with no problems.
I have a 3G simcard the one with the red fireball and the 3G logo.
I have already brought the phone back once to see if that was the problem so cingular gave me a brand new phone.
I am thinking it is a ROM issue or a radio problem.
Heres the Rom version i have
ROM version 1.34.502.1
ROM Date 9/21/06
Radio Version 1.116.00.00
Protocol Version 32.53.7018.01H
Is there a radio update or ROM update that i can install safely with out messing up my phone im new to this. if so where can i get it from
Thanks for any of your help with this issue..
I think the answer isn't the one you want to hear. Since you CAN get 3G service in your kitchen, the problem is that A) something about your house makes it hard to get a signal (possibly the materials or electromagnetic interference) or B) you're in a fringe area where the signal is weak or C) you're in a good area, but the network needs some tweaking.
Cingular's 3G coverage is still very new and it takes people getting a 3G phone in their hands, discovering how well it works, and reporting their results back to Cingular in order for the network to improve. I suggest you go back to a Cingular store and talk to someone (a manager or a knowledgable employee) who can report back to the network team about your experience in your area. They may be able to take a look into it and get a simple fix. Reporting a problem I had at first with voice calls in a 3G area on my 8525 resulted in the problem being fixed by the network guys within 48 hours. I'm not saying there is a problem in your area necessarily. But if your experience is reported to someone who can actually do something about it, then the chances of your coverage improving increases greatly.
Good luck!
i did report the problem to cingular and they opened up a trouble ticket.they first said to me that it could be because of the data plan that i am using which is a blackberry plan since i am using the blackberry connect software on my 8525. but when i had the regular PDA connect plan i still didnt get the 3G signal.
But i said it wasnt because of my data plan it was because of there network.I mean what does the data plans have to do with 3G signal?
The blackberry plan i have now works perfectly with my 8525 and blackberry connect software with never one issue.
i have gone even outside and still no 3G signal even though it says on cingulars website that i am within the coverage area for 3G and even tech support said i am within the coverage to get 3G signal.
And as i mentioned i have all ready exchanged my 8525 for a brand new one and also got 2 new 3G sim cards in case there was something wrong with the sim cards.strange really strange..

Internet Issues

how do access the Internet settings such as change dns serer address
I don't see the DNS anywhere but there are a lot of options if you go to the Browser->Menu->More->Settings
Anyone else have a G1 with no internet connection?
I got mine the morning of the 22nd, and since then I've not been able to access the internet by either means of Edge or 3G. I also live in a very good 3G coverage area. Anyone else having this issue?
I called T-mobile, they escalated it up to engineering and told me they are working on it. Was told I'd more than likely get called back today, and i didn't... Seems everyone I know has no issues with the net and their new G1's.. Anyone here having this problem?
I'm liking the phone OK, but for the 349.99 and 30 bucks tax (I wasn't eligible for the upgrade)and 4 hours in line... I'd like the internet to work out of the box. .
Half tempted to get the Touch Pro, since it appears to be at a local best buy...
I had a HTC diamond touch with WM6.1 same processor pretty much a kickass phone and I can tell a big different when it comes to internet speed.I don't live in a 3G area but the G1 browser is faster than Mobile Internet Explorer and Opera.Mine started working out of the box.
If I were you I would go to your Tmo store and ask and think about the other phone....it's gonna be more expensive too.
See ya.
I did for the 22nd
the chick put the g1 data plan on the wrong line, so I got no joy till I called and had it fixed then waited 8hours for the setting to change...
but now all is well
bhang
Does anyone else's EDGE randomly go off and on? And not the no-service so no-edge thing, i mean i'll be in the same position and it will randomly disappear and reappear...other times it just doesn't connect.
another thing PLEASE HELP WITH...
i have cincinnati bell and they recently rolled out Dual-band WCDMA 1700/2100 network.
is this NOT the same as t-mobiles? i partially bought this phone because it would work with cinci bell because they were both on the 1700/2100 band, but apparently not because i can't get 3g signal...well i've seen it flash 3g before for like 1 second but then it goes away.
any suggestions? i also have mms troubles but thats another thing i'll worry about after fixing my current problems.
I'd guess you need to change the APN settings. Google "g1 att apn" and you should get plenty of instructions for AT&T. Just modify them to work with Cincinnati Bell. And yes, Cincinnati Bell is using the same 1700/2100 AWS-1 T-mo is using.
i have the correct APN - internet DOES work and has worked on all other devices using my current APN configuration.
Hm. Beats me then. Are EDGE and 3G rock solid right now with your other devices?
i hope thats it...EDGE works...most of the time. i haven't gotten G yet. i have no other device to test 3g on...except my brother's super un-smartphone nokia 3555 which displays "3g" at the top almost always...that's the only other 1700/2100 mhz phone that i know of.
hopefully this gets fixed in an update? also, should i delete all other APN's from the list besides my CBW one? and should i have a separate APN for mms and data (cause under the tmobile ones the apn type on the data is set to default and apn type under mms is mms...i copied this format...no luck either...mms still doesn't work).
EDGE and GSM is Smoothest across all HTC i have used.
and GPS is the fastest in all HTC Device may be becuase of Dedicated Antena on Body below Battery cover
I just received mine yesterday and have been using internet all day. the only problem i had was at 2am (gmt) i was dropped down to 2g. But that was a t-mobile problem, my PC broadband was dropped down to 2g also.
Both were back on 3g when i got up.
In you case it may be the phone, id phone up your operator. If your network isnt experiencing any problems then you should send your phone back.

X1i when using 3G on AT&T I cant make or receive calls???

So when I leave all the band settings to auto on the phone, it immediately connects to AT&T's 3G network and shows the "H" in the title bar it worked for a little while then calls stopped coming through, after a hard reset it works again with calls for a few hours, then it begins to fail.
If I switch the bands to GSM and manually select the frequencies (850 + 1900, according to wm) then it connects to the EDGE network, and I can make and receive calls as I please, no problems, except for the crappy network speed.
So someone help me out here please, is the phone defective, or is it not working as it should because of the lack of the 850 band? I know that AT&T works on either or but this problem has me stumped.
Other than this rather huge problem (phone that cant make calls), I absolutely love the Xperia and would hate to return and wait for another.
did you try to use the connection wizard to let the phone config itself?
after I put my iphone sim in it shows the H/3G icon on anf off all the time, while I can receive call I was unable to go online.... after someone suggested me to call att to update the imei on my account to the x1, I found that I still have to go to connection and change the setting myself b4 it can go online. you will have to remove the user name and pw in media net setting and uncheck the proxy server.
I guess my case is a little different than yours but I guess you can give it a try... good luck =)
Thanks, I actually haven't tried that since i figured it would be the same as what happens when you turn the phone on for the first time, when it autoconfigs.
if it say it detect a new sim and ask if you want to do the auto config then I guess its the same... but again I did need to change some settings inside the network config to make it work too... so I am guessing the "auto config" has some flaw in it
No problem with my X1i when I venture in a1900mhz area close to my home. I live in a small town in Ca. only 850mhz here. But in the larger Metro area around me... No Problems with calls or hspeed data access...
Stuart
Thanks for the replies, It looks like the Configuration wizard in the settings menu did the trick. It do something else that the autoconfig doesnt. The phone seems to work now just fine, although it doesnt hang on to the signal as well as my old k790a. The office I work in is an ATT dead zone and I could make calls using the K790a with only one bar, with the Xperia it either doesnt go through or drops the call.
Again this is better as it works now, just not as well as my old phone.
Also, scl_electronics, so you are saying the X1i has both 850 and 1900mhz bands? I had a feeling mine did too, but I thought it was put to rest that that wasnt the case with the X1i....
Sorry Aaron J,
i should have been more specific!! Where I live, 3G is only on 850mhz band so I don't get access..Just The edge network. When I venture about 10 mile away toward the major Metro areas..The 1900mhz band are used. So the H is displayed, but I don't have those access problems for calls or data!!
But i am waiting to see if they can crack the rom for 850mhz-3G access!!

Oh ok thats kind of makes, sense although I thought the X1i didnt have an 850 band at all, so what frequency does it work off then?
Anyways, back to my problem....I spoke too soon, it dont work on 3G switched to EDGE. I might just try getting a new sim card, mine is a Cingular one from 2005, that has been in at least 4 different phones now including the X1i.

Well out here in Ca... 850mhz gsm/edge is used ..So I quad band gsm phone is handy!!!
Stuart
Yes it is! My little problem is a little confusing though as one thing I just realized that I didnt say before is that the phone has no problem connecting to the 3G network using HSDPA. I get full bars with the H icon pretty much everywhere in my area and my data speeds are very good. So I can surf the net, download programs, watch high quality youtube videos using the app in touchflo and even send and receive texts just fine.....just no calls when on 3G. I'm hoping its just setting somewhere and not a faulty device.
I live in Raleigh NC by the way so maybe it could be a faulty tower?
Well when venture into Stockton Ca. my phone switches to 3G-HSDPA:1900MHZ Without a connection hitch....
Have you tried a soft reset......
But when all else fails Hard Reset to the Rescue!!!
Btw... in several of my ppc-wm units when restoring to OEM setting(hard reset) there has been many time the process had a problem. So something would be screwed up!! So when You don't succeed, try another hard reset!!
Good luck,
Stuart
hey i was wonder if your problem is HSDPA/HSUPA being on, i have at&t also and it worked for the first few weeks fine with it being on then all of a sudden it stopped and couldn't connect to the internet, before i had the H/Edge showing up and also my email never updated when it was set to do it every 15minutes. Now that i disable the HSDPA/HSUPA i see 3G/Edge and email update all the time on the X1i. Just wonder if that might fix it, I'm all kinda still new to all this but i had my X1i for 2 1/2 weeks now.
Hello thanks for all the suggestions, Experiaenjoy, no I haven't tried mainly because I can connect to the data network just fine and get awesome speeds with full bars pretty much everywhere, all of my data related activities and programs work just fine (aka murder my battery life ). I just cant make calls while on 3G.
I talked to a coworker today who used to be a regional manager at AT&T hee said that he saw many cases of people who were having problems where it was due to the SIM card. He said they all had the older orange Cingular card and that an update to the new blue AT&T card solved all problems. So right now I'm trying to see if I can get mine updated (I do have an older Cingular SIM). Once I get that, I will do a hard reset (3rd one also done about 20 soft resets since I 've had it-I've installed a bunch of programs and tweaks) and skip the auto config and go straight to the connection wizard.

[Q] Orange/t-mobile network sharing in the UK

Hi All,
Done a quick search on this and can't find anything relevent, but i apologise if a thread already exists.
Really a question for those in the UK on the t-mobile network. Have any of you attempted to sign up for the orange 2g roaming service yet? I signed up, recieved the confirmation text, replied to it, and received the final confirmation. However, I'm not sure it's working. The signal seems no stronger, and i still drop in my house.
Obviously i'm posting this in the android section because i'm running android myself and am wondering whether anyone in the same boat has managed to get roaming to work. Should the fact that we're on a non-official OS running off the sd card make a difference?
Oh and for completeness, i'm running shubcraft 1.5 rmnet.
Cheers fellas!
I'm quite happily flip flopping between Orange while at work and T-Mobile for everything else...
works like a charm for me though you do have to stick the phone into Airplane mode after selecting the different provider for the data to work ...

Many thanks for the reply Jezwick. So, just for clarity, you're manually selecting each provider as and when required? Because i can do that, i think. When i select orange though, whilst it registers with the network fine, i get a little "R" above the signal bar (any ideas what that means?) And the speed appears to be limited to Edge. Orange have a very strong signal round here, so i figure i should be getting GPRS really.
It's the auto-switching i'm not totally sure is working really. Is there any explicit indicator that it's flipping on it's own? Or do you just observe a generally better 2g signal, rather than say, a very weak 3g one? Round the house, my phone is still trying to make do with 1 or zero bars of 3g. I would have hoped it would flip over to orange more or less all the time under those circumstances. Nothing to stop me manually selecting it i guess though...

The R is indeed for roaming that's the way it works if your not on your 'own' network.. The 'flipped' service will currently only work at GRPS speeds at the moment but should be 3G by the new year
I have noticed mine flipping automatically but only once or twice in the last few weeks but only when I get NO signal from the current service.

Understood - thanks for the info Just done some reading and apparently EDGE is faster than basic GPRS. For some reason, i'd always assumed the reverse. Looks like the best option is just to have it always on orange whilst at home and use wifi for data (which i do anyway to compensate for the poor signal). Cheers!

[Q] Defy, AT&T EDGE only

I have an unlocked Defy from T-Mobile USA that I'm using with my AT&T service, but I'm only getting EDGE wherever I go, no UMTS at all, and I've even heard of people getting it to run on HSPA bands. I know already that HSPA is available everywhere from my home to my workplace, thanks to my Atrix 4G. I've rooted the Defy and it's running Cyanogenmod 7 latest. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I can find nothing on this forum or on Google to remedy the issue.
You should try to change the freq via baseband switcher. And restart.
Maybe you got the "2g only" checked in networks settings..uncheck that.
Settings >Wireless & networks > Mobile networks
You can also put automatic(2G and 3G) mode in GSM/UMTS network preferences.
Thanks for the reply Viper. I just noticed the baseband is set to some central Europe nonsense. Should I change it to one of the T-Mobile USA band settings? There's nothing there for AT&T.
Edit: I changed the baseband to US T-Mobile 3.Something, whichever was latest. 2G only was not checked. I'm still getting 2G only. Could it be my APN settings? Could I copy the APNs from my Atrix?
I'm having a problem with my AT&T connection as well, but I've been using my phone unlocked on the network since March with no problem. I'm new to modding, but OCD about streamlining my electronics. My friend suggested rooting my device and flashing a new ROM. I decided on stock Nordic Froyo, and it makes me so happy not to see all the T-mobile crap in my apps tray.
BUT the collateral damage is not so hot. I have no 3g or even 2g connection anymore. I tried the fix in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944258 and was able to get a signal with 4 bars instead of the previous state of emergency calls only, but no letters like E or 3g and no ability to use the internet/transfer data. I also installed the broadband switcher in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745 and tried all of the T-mobile US bands. No luck. I did rest the APN to default. No change. I've been using wifi, but will have to go back to work soon. Not having access to the smart part of my smartphone will feel sort of like having an arm cut off.
I'm not sure what to do next. I could try flashing another ROM, but from what I've read in the forums, that's no guarantee.
If anyone has any suggestions to help a noob, I'd be forever grateful.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the link, halah. Do I apply this as an update.zip from recovery? Or install?
Never mind, it won't work for me, for whatever reason.
