Is anybody's working to satisfactory? Or am I the only one?
I never really used GPS till I got this device and only from the complaining here had it really got me interested . Although I use GPS maybe 3 times a year, I've made it a point to use it every drive I take to see if its still working.
I always get a lock within 5 seconds to at most a min. Stationary or moving don't matter. I've never had my phone say location not available.
My phone always sees 11 or more and only locks on to 3 or 4 once it locked 7...
When I hit navigate to then a destination it instantly finds me and routes me. While driving it every now and again has a blue circle but that's usually during lots of overpasses turns on freeways and etc. For the most part it has no circle ...
I will admit every now and again it'll lose route and not reroute so I back out and hit navigate again and back to navigating.
Its even found me in portland Oregon in the city.
So my question is, although GPS could be better I.e. faster lock, more birds to lock on and tracking while moving, it still has served its purpose and found me my way a few times when I'm lost.
On the way home I will use it again and it will find me almost instantly and navigate me all the way home...
Am I lucky? Or do others work good enough to get around, yes could be better, but is yours good enough like mine to where even if they don't fix it, its not that big of a deal cause for the most part for me it works?
Another thing is I'm beggining to think its hardware and software. Reason is messing with the settings does improve or have different results, but on the other hand the gps fixes seem to give everyone different results and why would Samsung release them all with poor GPS just to supposedly fix it in a few weeks/ wouldn't it have been easier to fix then ship em out?
Who knows, no one is for sure, but I just want to know who's is atleast satisfactory like mine? Maybe I just don't have high GPS standards cause I don't use it to get 1 meter off. If I'm atleast 50 meters away I think my eyes and brain can help me find the other 50 meters.
So are you satisfied even though it needs improvements? I am. I don't think it needs fixed, but as Samsung says "optimized".

Mine isn't as terrible as some people say on here, but there are definitely problems. Latitude, for instance, often falls back to network location even with a clear view of the sky. Driving, it will randomly drift far enough that the GPS goes to rerouting mode, trying to bring me back on course. And there are times that it just refuses to get a lock for 10-15 minutes, though luckily that doesn't happen too often. Definitely worst GPS performance than my G1.
But, all that being said.. Not so bad that I'm really stressing about it. I'll give Samsung/TMO a few more weeks for an update and hopefully they patch up the issues with Froyo. If not, or if the update gets delayed, I'll start tinkering with the fixes from the forums.
mine works fine too. quick to lock, navigation works perfectly. i was locking on 3-4 satellites last time i tried.
it's not very good indoors, and often has trouble determining location, but outdoors it has been completely satisfactory.
this is all with gps on, and use wireless networks off, btw. completely stock, and the compass works fine too.

I'm the same, I don't use GPS that much, but when I do it works fairly well. Its not the best I've used but it gets the job done. Only once when I was driving on the freeway could it not lock on.
I remember reading that a GPS fix leaked for the Captivate and it seemed to fix the issue. And the new SGS phones coming out for Verizon and Sprint seem to have better luck with GPS.
For me too GPS locks 95% times. However Navigation is the only application that crashes my phone once in a while....and I dont like that
Mine seems OK, with the light use I've given it. Haven't tested it out with route-tracing software like some have -- but for just getting an accurate lock, it seems on par with other phones I've used. (Maybe a little slower to lock.)
I had tested my GF's Samsung Moment alongside my Vibrant many times and the Moment hooks to GPS quickly and consistently. I cannot think how Samsung could implement an inferior GPS in their flagship phone!
My gps works flawlessly, when I read all these threads its hard to remaster because everyone I use gps it takes a matter of seconds to lock in and route me to my destination. Even in my area of living which is outside of the city it is very vet close to where I actually am and even right on. I would be frustrated if it didn't work as I do use my gps every so often but it is precise in my experience and I'm very happy with the final product.

I now have two GPS's in two of our cars. The primary reason for buying a GPS a while back was so I could meet up with guys that I often 4wheel with in various locations. I would get lost when somebody told me to meet them in a city that I didn't know very well. My wife saw how handy my GPS was and took it. I finally got a G1 and it was used as a backup in case the wife wouldn't let me use "My GPS".
Anyways fast forward a year or so. We bought a second GPS for her car. Why because she got the new one of course.
Now that I have 2 GPS's in my cars my phone has been well a secondary or I should say hardly ever used. However when I'm on foot and I get backwards its always been nice to know I could fire up my GPS and find my way somewhere. Lord knows I've been lost a few times in down town Seattle. Wandering around and firing up maps and then using the by foot option has saved me many times. Sure it didn't have to be accurate since all I needed to know was do I walk 3 blocks north then 1 to the west or is it 3 blocks to the west then 1 block to the north?
The Vibrant GPS works when I need it, but honestly I really wish it was a bit more like the G1. Its nearly useless when I use CardioTrainer and a few more apps.
I have had my Vibrant for about 45 days and the GPS has been awful since day one. I have tried some of the fixes which did help a little bit but I still have problems. The GPS cuts on and off so much that Cardio Trainer is pretty much useless most of the time. It has started to freeze on me while attempting to use Cardio Trainer today, which necessitated pulling the battery. The GPS normally shows me about 2 of 3 miles from where I actually am. The compass is just about totally useless. This is a wonderful phone and would be a fantastic phone if the compass and GPS just worked normally. I am starting to be concerned with the phone starting to freeze up as it has not done that in the past.
Mine worked great for a few weeks. Even though it wouldn't lock more than 3 or 4 satellites the performance was completely satisfactory. Then it got a little quirky with accuracy and my position started jumping around a lot. Then it started positioning me miles from where I actually was sometimes, causing Maps to lock up, causing the entire phone to lock up, and generally being unreliable.
Over the past week or so I've had to reboot the phone half the time I try to use the GPS in order to get it to work. I can usually get it to work at a satisfactory level eventually, but it's far from painless. I haven't tried any of the "fixes"...my GPS settings are stock.
On my first phone the GPS and phone in general was a disaster.
Once returned, my second phone is "ok" for driving assistance use, it takes awhile for a lock but it works. But I otherwise leave GPS turned off or else my phone will randomly shut down/reboot.
With trepidation I applied a no lag fix and it has turned my opinion of the phone from "meh" to wow (even though I was not even sure I had a lag problem, but little did I know).
So if GPS gets fixed and 2.2 deployed, and assuming 2.2 solves lag or a no-lag fix is implemented for 2.2, then I will be very happy. But it sure seems like a bit of grief to get to that point. Anything goes wrong down that path, and I'll focus on HTC or other devices... cause for similar past issues with hardware I never buy HP

Add a compass fix to that list and I'm there with ya.
After applying the gps fix I haven't had a problem since. I use the gps daily and have only had 1 restart. Had my vibrant since day 1. Maybe I just got lucky.

I completely understand the need to get the GPS fixed, but I have to honestly ask...why do so many people seem so worried about the compass?
Are there that many of you out there that wander around using the compass all the time ? Is it because of apps like Layar ?
Using a smartphone as a compass/gps on a hike is useless if you plan to be out more than a few hours so that can't be it.
Is it just the principle of the thing ... that they provide the feature so it should work properly out of the box?
I'm not trying to be a wise ass here...I'm honestly curious.

In a word: yes.
While I don't use Layar much, it would be great if it worked. I've tried to use Google Skymaps several times and gave up due to the compass completely freaking out when I hold the phone up to, you know, look at the sky. It's nice the have a working compass for Google Maps...even if it's just for street view. Yelp taunts me with directional functionality that doesn't work, and I could go on. In general I'd like to know that apps that use the magnetometer to detect orientation (and who knows what will come along that will use that functionality) will work. I don't think that's too much to ask.
Now, I also do a lot of city navigation on foot, and having a compass to figure out which way to walk when I come up from a subway on my way to a meeting is a huge help. Seriously. At that point I don't have a GPS because I've been underground.
I've used Android devices (like the G1) that are old-ish, and I've used Android devices that are not considered high-end devices with working compasses, so yeah, on principle I expect my high-end $500 device to work at least as well as they do. Had I known about the worthless compass before I purchased the phone it would have given me pause...I probably would have at least considered another device. It bugs me that such a simple piece of functionality being broken will prevent me from using apps and features that I'd otherwise find useful on my expensive device.
Now I have a Swiss Army knife with a broken saw blade. Yeah, it's just the saw blade, but I paid for one with a working saw blade, dammit, and it wasn't cheap.

that sucks dude. i just noticed what you were saying about google sky map, mine was tripping out for a little while but then it finally settled down. can't really tell if it's pointing in the accurate direction because it's daylight
my compass has worked just fine on maps though. it always points me in the right direction, and even the compass on the "gps status" app is correct, birds locked on or not

If I hold the phone "just right" I can usually get the compass to work ok in things like Maps where accuracy isn't terribly important. It's still painfully slow compared to other Android devices I've used, though. Most I've seen have nearly instantaneous compass updates when you turn...on my Vibrant (both of them) I have to wait a while for it to settle down before I can tell how it's reading. When I hold it in an odd position...like you do for Skymaps...it's all over the place. Sometimes it works, but it's hard to tell unless you're manually keeping track of which way is North, which kinda defeats the purpose, eh?

hopefully samsung releases a fix baked into some froyo here soon. they had better do SOMETHING this month anyway
I was just checking how bad the GPS is (again) and noticed that the compass is inconsistent, in that 'North' can change by up to 30 degrees depending on the orientation of the phone.
For example if I line up north with the phone on the table and place a piece of paper next it, then flip the phone round by 180 degrees and line the phone up to the edge of the paper, then the direction that was previously north is now 330 degrees, and 'north' is now 30 degress to the east.
I've now tried it in several places using different apps and with the hpne horizontal/vertical/upside down/whatever and it's always the same - when the phone is pointing 'south', 'north' moves 30 degrees to the east.
Obviously the sensors in the phone are just junk and Samsung have sold me a lemon. Anyone else have any similiar problems?
The problem is clearly aliens! their technology is not compatable with our own and they threaten all navigational devices.

Have you ever tried to calibrate the sensors? Doesn´t look so. No matter in what position i hold the phone, the difference is never more than 1-2 degrees!
The first few times I tried it, it was fine, but it did go out of alignment eventually after moving he phone around a lot. Although, that can happen due to external magnetic fields. In planes we normally use compass correction cards to help correct mistakes in the compass, and I'm not sure how good the Galaxy S is at compensating for those errors either (although, I don't think that would explain 30 degrees error).
Also, where are you living? Remember, the earths magnetic field is strongest closer to the poles, and weakest at the equator.

Yes I've calibrated (and re-calibrated) the sensors and it doesn't make any difference.
I'm glad yours works so well - I bet your gps is super-accurate too.
I live in the uk and my trusty G1 has no problems, so I can only assume it is the SGS.

My GPS is not so accurate, but its usable. The sensors are very sensitive. If you use the compass near my laptop (15 cm away or nearer) it´s becoming completely useless too.
try to use the compass far from electrical equipment like computers or tv´s. Makes a huge different for me. When using the phone 15 cm away from my laptop, the compass get´s unusable too. As soon as i reach 20 cm far from the laptop the compass works as it should.
Also, one more thing, the "sheet" trick is easily affected by interference if the compass isn't located in the centre of the galaxy S.
If it were results would be better. Does anyone know where the magnetic sensor is located on the i9000? Because if you spin it around the sensor, rather than the middle of the phone, the compass should remain consistant, provided the magnetic interference is constant.
I found since updating to JPM froyo from JM9 my compass is not just 30 degrees off, its sometimes 180! I've done the recalib etc but it jumps around all over the place. Good thing I'm not bothered one bit by it as I rarely if ever use gps/directional apps.
my Gps works good. But Compass not so much. Does GPS have to be on to use Compass? How do I calibrate the compass?
@andrewluecke with so many electrical equipments/circuits inside the phone, I reckon it must be hard to isolate the compass from the interference as we are able to do in aircraft.
ANyways there is no practical daily use of compass for me.
Well I was messing around last night and found that if I tip the phone backwards nad forwards slightly (so it is still mostly horizontal) then "North" can vary quite a bit. I tried the LBSTestModes which seemed to be better, but it still has issues, and like ickyboo I've managed to make it face 180 degrees off North.
As for everyday applications - well I suppose Navigation is the main one I use, although any augmented reality app is gonna be affected. So that means the Layar app that Samsung advertise as a feature of the phone is useless.

I don't suppose you know if this is why the Google Skymap application is always misaligned? (I've tried all the calibration methods I've been able to find and it's still always off)

Yes it would definitely explain that.
First noticed a problem using Google Sky Maps. I couldn't tilt phone to view above the horizon. I was on a 2.2 ROM, but I never tried it on a stock ROM. This position sensor error would effect any app that uses the phones position (pitch, roll, azimuth) as an input, for instance game control. It would manifest as not being able to turn or climb. It also effects horizontal/vertical screen switching.
What I know from testing:
A. Download Sensor Debug from market. The simple program lists the sensor values that are reported to programs: Azimuth, Pitch, Roll, as well as force sensed along X,Y and Z axis. If the system is working properly, values with the phone sitting still would read: Pitch 0, Roll 0, X and Y Forces = almost zero, Z (gravity)= -9.xx. Tilting the phone to the left or right, Roll goes +/- 90. When tilted toward the sky, pitch would smoothly increment from 0 to -90 when vertical, and -180 when upside down. My phone when sitting on the table will read (depending on calibration method): Pitch= 0 or -180, Roll =0, Z axis= either +9 or -9. Rolling the phone is sometimes limited to +/-30 degrees. Pitch increments in the proper direction, but is capped. If I start at 0 when flat, it stops at 90 degrees when vertical. If it starts at -180, it stops at -150.
B. Calibration settings appear to be stored in /data/system/ms3c_yamaha.cfg. Changes are real time. If deleted, it is recreated. Values vary greatly. Settings/display/horizontal calibrate effects the values. There is also a calibration utility available from terminal: su system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha. The terminal method has been reported as more accurate.
C. The problem has persisted with full data wipes, factory resets and ODIN return to stock.
So, is anyone else seeing these kind of problems. Questions:
1. What kind of pitch/roll values do you see in Sensor Debug:
2. What are the values in your /data/system/ms3c_yamaha.cfg? and what kind of calibration did you do if any?
3. I want try going back to stock 18 again, but think my method is not complete. What is the most thorough method?
I used the method described in the "my gps fix for 2.2" thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869806. It uses Odin 1.3 and SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5.
There's another "Return to Stock" thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773032. It uses the same version of Odin and SPH-D700-DG27-8Gb-REL.tar, and maybe a different PIT. Not sure what a PIT file is.
It appears that the threads re ODIN for DK28 use a different version of ODIN and or PIT, or no PIT.
4. Is it possible that ODIN isn't writing part of the firmware? If I can verify the problem after a thorough return to stock, well maybe it is a hardware issue and I'll just go down to Sprint and get a new one!

I've had the same exact problems that you're having. I've done the same things you've done to try and fix the problem but nothing works. I've really only noticed the problem in sky maps because I haven't played any games that required going above the horizon. Hopefully someone can figure out a fix for this because I'd really like to use sky maps again.
I used the link above, return to stock, last page of that thred. Odin3 ver 1.67, and DI 18 stock with no PIT. Sensor debug values are the same....
What are your sensor debug values? Maybe try the su calibrate if u can.
Went to Sprint store. Nominal debug values on an Epic and an Intrepid...
Not a tech store so walking 1 mi to the other one. I am resolveed that I have hardware issues, or at least issues that ODIN can't fix.
I don't have insurance, but it's only 3 months old...should be covered?
Make a big scene, ask for manager... they may try to refer you to sammy warranty... don't put up with it. But the 7 bux a month is def worth it...
I don't think that the problem is the hardware. Sky maps was working for me before flashing over to the froyo roms. I'm just hoping that once the official froyo is released, it'll be fixed with that.
Update of my journeys....
2 mi walk to the tech store. 45 min later, they say yes the accelerometers are faulty, you need a new phone. Don't know what they did, but the only two things not stock on the phone where Google Sky and Sensor Debug.
So great, I get a new phone! But wait.... "it'll be here in a week." But I don't live in San Francisco, so that does me no good. They say to talk to go to my local store in SC, or call CS to get it mailed. Evidently they won't swap with a retail phone.
CS is no help. Won't authorize a retail swap. Won't have replacement sent to residence or my local store. I'll try calling them tomorrow.
In the meantime, I'm going to ODIN 1.6.1 straight to SPH-D700-DK28-8g-rel.tar.md5 OFFICIAL with no PIT, one click root, and restore my Bonsai system and data. My previous 2.2 upgrades have all been via update zip from DI 18.
So I guess the question remains, does the phone have hardware issues, or did my 2.2 upgrade dork something up that ODIN can't fix. Seems like it will be a while till I can Google Sky....
You cannot use another person's accelerometer values. Each and every accelerometer is different and calibrating will give everyone different values.
To fix the accelerometer you can run the following command in a terminal emulator :

The problem is that something has changed from Eclair to Froyo that Samsung hasn't taken into consideration. The update from a DI18 stock to the OTA Froyo should work without a hitch.
Hopefully w/ the official Froyo update we will get a fix. Otherwise, we should confer w/ noobnl or the CMSGS team to figure out how they were able to resolve the issue.
I've used the utility numerous times. Agreed that individual accelerometers would be somewhat different, but I think the differences wouldn't be very large in the .cfg file. The utility is "fine" calibration.
My device has gross errors.... Z axis prior to running the utility is +9.xx instead of -9.xx, and lay flat pitch is -179. The utility helps a little, but pitch values are referenced wrong, and don't increment properly even after running it.
Obviously there are areas of the phone that don't get reset with ODIN return to stock (Phone remembers the time, account info, etc). Sprint Tech couldn't get the g-sensors working right either with what ever reset procedure they use. Either data is stored on a level ODIN can't reach, or it's hardware failure.
Im a complete noob so correct me if I am imagining this... I had the same problem and fllashed back from froyo. Did the su/system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha fix and it worked. Started restoring all my stuff and the orientation started to dog again.
I messed around and tried changing my launchers. I was using ADW and switched back to TW and the response was much better. I changed to Launcherpro and it is a little slower but not as bad as ADW. Am I high? Please forgive my noobiness.
I have noticed the same problem. The D18 rom was fine and all the games worked good. I checked the horizontal calibration and the sensors seem fine but the games and sky map don't seem to register properly with 2.2. I'm waiting for the OTA to come out b4 I take the phone back for a swap.
I'm actually having the exact problems you all are having with the pitch sensor, ever since I moved to DK28. Right now it is annoying, but I am hoping it will be resolved when DL11 is released. If not, it looks like I'll have to call Sprint and have them get me a new phone, because some programs don't work correctly right now.

I noticed this problem while using maps, my compass seemed to have East and West swapped (but North and South were fine). I used the calibration tool in the Settings menu under "Display" (horizontal calibration), but I put the phone on the table upside down (hanging off the edge enough for the "calibrate" button to be in reach).
Not ony did this fix my compass, it seems to have improved the auto rotation response time dramatically

Wow...that seemed to help a ton. The games are off, but I don't really play them anymore so no issue. Sky map actually works now. The auto rotation is much better also. Thanks.
Edit: This fix works. I also started my game prior to doing the fix paused it and did the calibration. The game works great now.

Thanks! This seems to have fixed problem. I'm not exactly sure which part fixed it for me so I'll just go through what I did. I placed my phone face down and did the calibration in display settings, but then my phone wasn't switching to the correct orientation, so I rebooted my phone to see if that would help. It didn't. So I then did the terminal emulator calibration and now it's fixed. So, that makes me wonder if it has something to do with the calibration utility in display settings having some settings that are flipped around.
Woah... that worked. For whatever reason, it actually worked. Hmm...

I actually tried the upside down trick once before with out success. Thought I had some results this time... then added another step. Voilla!
1. Working on a rooted froyo ROM. Upside down horizontal calibration from system/display/settings/display.
2. Reboot. (Not sure if that step is needed)
3. Connectbot su system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha
At this point, sensor debug showed no success. Pitch and roll both limited to 30 deg.
4. Settings/display/autorotate. Uncheck.
Back in sensor debug, every thing checked out.
Anyone think it's still fixed if you enable autorotate?

I agree that the calibration in display settings seems to be the problem, sensorcalibutil works fine right-side-up. But sensorcalibutil didn't seem to fix the orientation lag, so it's possible that the display settings' calibration is correct, the internal compass I installed upside down, and sensorcalibutil has been modified to compensate... but I doubt it, the hardware should work no matter what the orientation, so a software problem in the settings' calibration is more likely the cause

I've tried everything in this thread and I still can't get google sky maps to tilt up, above the horizon. Anyone word on EB13 resolving this particular issue?
no matter what i do, pitch is never a positive value in sensordebug..
same with sky maps. only other problem i'm having after calibration with the exception of an occasional compass jitter
I also have a problem with Sky Maps.. Pointing up will not register.
As many others, I have updated to official Mango yesterday. And i was really surprised by compass - its accuracy is much worse than simply guessing "where the hell could that north be" . Do you experience the same?
Majority of applications I tried required "calibration" - shaking Omnia in 8 shaped movement, but I found this absolutely useless. Even if the pointer is in north-south orientation, it usualy swaps north and south part of the pointer.
I tried:
Compass 7 from Redtalon - points north in 1 from 10 cases, usualy points towards west. Rotating phone makes this absolutely crazy
123 Compass from Agulhas Solutions - sometimes points north, but pointer is shaking as hell, most usual direction is south-west. Rotating your phone means rotating pointer anywhere. No sign of pointing towards north...
Compass from KanzSoft - this one looks to be the most promising. It shows at least basic knowledge where to point, but is oscilating in +- 10°
Maybe I just found wrong applications - do you have any suggestions?

It sucks and they didn't even implement it in bing maps, that's the only thing I miss from the iPhone.

The compass that is included in the diagnosis app by entering *#0*# works pretty well over here. It does oscillate quite a bit though...
If I understand well the Mango SDK docs, our crap compass doesn't manage to pass the calibration test made by the devs. Only the Compass app from KanzSoft seems to use results even if the sensor is not calibrated.
I'll try to play with the sample as soon as i find so time to.
As far as i'm concerned, I didn't even know that the Omnia7 came with a compass, so it's a good news.

Hey.. Remarkable. I tried the app. I won't get passed the calibration. But in the background you see a compass and it's working quite well (best I've seen so far). So if Samsung just fixes this calibration issue, we could actually have a proper working compass on our Omnia7. They fixed a lot of issues in the Mango driver update package. I hope they're gonna fix this one too.

Something, somewhere is completely screwed
Through the engineering menu, compass works fine (a bit jumpy - but at least points to North!)
But...every compass app I've tried points the the wrong way, usually by 10-20 degress
Even the official Scansearch app is ropey - allthough it it does seem to get it right eventually after rotating the phone a few times
(often gets N/S flipped)

how to fix ?
Deleting and reinstalling the diagnosis app made mine run much better.
However, mine is 180 degrees inverted (i.e. North shows as South)....

On a serious note though - My compass is pretty rubbish too. It may point vaguely in the right direction. I wouldn't trust it though, I do a lot of hiking and fell running and i'm not about to trust this and go without a real compass!

That was a cheap shot haha...
It more for a stargazing app I use - Skymap... check it out its pretty good... it uses the compass and telemetry data to orientate the map on the screen so it knows where you are looking.
Try Compass VO, it's the most accurate one compare to my actual compass.
It looks like the compass on the Omnia 7 is off by 10* according to Compass VO accuracy fix.

edit: so, compass is confirm to be crap. Rotation is in consistent.
I used to have heading at least in diags, but no more. I've got only those XYZ values. However it doesn't change the fact that I never got trustworthy readout from compass. Sometimes it was correct heading, but I never knew that until I compared it to real compass. And when I turned 90 deg compass heading changed only little bit, like 20 to 40 deg or sometimes it didn't changed at all.
I have to say it's quite disappointing and I'm thinking about trying luck with RMA.
On my Focus, at first all compass apps didn't worked correctly. After I read this diagnose menu, I tried to enter. The XYZ changed as I change my direction, but the compass didn't move at all.
Then I tried the compass app again (from Kantz something), It now pointing in a consistent direction and rotate (keep pointing in the north???) as I rotate my position.
Dunno what really happened here ...

I tried also a lot of compass Apps but without luck. There was no App which showed the correct cardinal direction. Then I read in another Forum someone had reinstalled the diagnostic tool and after that everything was fine. So I tried this also.
And...after the deinstallation of the diagnostic tool the 'My Compass' Apps works perfect. Now the app didn't ask again and again for reinitialization of the compass.
I didn't installed the samsung diagnose tool again and I didn't tried other compass apps but this was for me a first step.

hey! That actually works! Weird, I did reinstall the diagnosis app after the Mango update and the Samsung KH5 update. But I just tried it again. Immediately opened Diagnosis and dialled *#0*# and tapped compass. Then it worked! I tried another compass app and that one worked too. Thanks!
EDIT: Cool! My Reality Scanner in Navigon 4.0 works now too!!

In addition, compass sensor enables application to subscribe to the Calibrate event, since magnetometer sensor which used to implement the compass is subject to external interference. Metal obstacles, high-voltage electrical installations and some electronic devices could interfere with Earth’s magnetic field and change the local magnetic field’s values. In case the sensor needs to be calibrated and the compass API fires the Calibrate event. When this event fired the application have to present the UI with instructions to perform sensor calibration. Sensor calibration performed by waving the device in figure 8 pattern.
The API doesn’t provide any “CalibrationComplete” notification, and it is up to developer to decide when data accuracy sufficient to the application. In general, HeadingAccuracy below 10-15 degrees should enough for most applications.

Most compass apps have a calibration function. I couldn't get this to work. Didn't matter how I moved the phone in a "figure 8". Then I tried Youtube and found this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP3d00Hr14o. It's for an iPhone, but it works the same. The guy in the video wave just once to calibrate it. I had to do it a few times, but then the app said: Calibration complete!
I now finally have a working, calibrated compass in my Omnia 7!
That also means I can use all apps that need the Mango Motion-sensor. Omnia 7 doesn't have a gyro, but with compass and accelerometer combined you have a fully functional Motion-sensor (although slightly less accurate than newer devices that also have a gyro).

Actualy Compass VO works very well on my Omnia 7 .. once the phone digital compass is calibrated (8 shape) I have no issues with rotation, pointing magnetic and geographic north.
I like it because it allows you to set a map (topographic) in the background and use it together with compass to navigate. Not to mention multiple themes + other features ...
Really recomended.

I recently moved to g2 from galaxy s3. Every thing is good except for gps which takes as much as 90 seconds sometimes to get a lock. Normally its over a minute most of times, though once its locked its very accurate like error ~ 4m
However this came as an suprise since my old sgs3 i9300 used to get lock under 30s 99% of times.
Is the gps performance of g2 not that great or is it rom related? im on cloudy 3.3 with dorimanx kernel..
Your going to get about 20 different circumstantial answers here... but the GPS performance on the LG G2 has always been crappy. It's a combination of hardware/software issues and barring getting something fixed by LG, there probably isn't a great solution. I've tried a variety of software fixes, to varying levels of success, I've tried taking the cover off and futzing with the antennas... but nothing makes the GPS that great. I actually think it got worse for me since Lollipop dropped.
I have read about the possible hardware fix which also some people do on the Nexus 5 as it has similar hardware internally. It is to do with the parts which form a connection to the back plate of the phone containing the GPS antenna. This is why some people claim if you pinch the phone in the right place with thumb and finger (i.e. thumb over screen and finger behind) it can form a better connection and provide better GPS.
Then I also read of software fixes. The main ones I know of are:
1: Using various different apps which supposedly "fix" your GPS by doing different things, like tests and/or modifying settings on the fly and/or resetting GPS data.
2: Using a dedicated modified gps.conf file. You will need to be rooted for this. Search on these forums for this.
3: Using the "device only" setting in the normal LG G2 menu under location services, as opposed to the "use wifi for increased accuracy" kind of setting.
I have tried none of these yet. My GPS is very random. For some journeys (it seems to be the ones I don't need it to work on) it works fine, then when I am in a rush and need it to work, it does not! I noticed that when pinching the back of the phone on what I would call the "left side" as you look at the screen about 3/4s of the way up, it changes the magnetic field readouts in the GPS status app. Whether or not this is just to do with earthing the phone or something....I don't know.
Annoyingly, I did not rely on my GPS much before Lollipop and therefore cannot tell if it was Lollipop that caused it to become...well.....unusable frankly. For me, it can either fully work or it can fully not work and not even get a lock no matter what I try. or it can do something in the middle. It's totally unreliable and I would take it back but I know what will happen. It will get sent back to me several times with "no fault found" and "phone factory reset" by the shop I bought from. I would rather (even still in warranty) try the hardware mod myself and the software stuff. Maybe the update to Lollipop 5.1.1 will fix it...who knows.
Has anyone tried going back to Kitkat to see if this fixes? The problem is....time to do this. We should not have to test these things out. This is basic stuff and it should work, especially on the latest stock firmware.

That's really disappointing i must say, as rightly said by post above me, this is basic stuff should work perfectly out of the box and that too this device is from a big manufacturer not some cheap Chinese stuff...
Anyway I'll try to see if gps.conf improves things as I think i might have optimized one lying around from my old hd2.
Also did anyone try to experiment with different radios? Back in old days it used to have good impact on gps performance.
And i also felt gps on KK was better but i couldn't be sure as i had KK rom for very small time before moved to lollipop.
