So Skype recently updated their Android app, now compatible with Galaxy S but requires 2.2 (no problem for me). Only niggle is that it's wifi only. Apparently only chat works over 3G, calls don't.
I remember when they first came out sometime ago someone modified the .apk to work over 3G. Any news on any work being done on the updated version to work over 3G as well?
I've been using this beta version below for quite a while...works ok for texting, but I've NEVER had luck making phone calls w/ either it or when Nimbuzz worked w/ Skype. At least Nimbuzz ran in the background and would send notifications just like a text message, this beta version pretty much sucks, but it works for the moment.
How long have you had this BETA? 'Cause Skype was just updated in the market about a couple of days ago to version 1.0.0.659, and this version actually works (or runs) on my Epic for everything wonderfully, except calls when not on WiFi.
I've had this months, but I'm also still running 2.1, so I don't think I can use the version found on the Market just yet.

I installed skype mobile on my titan, and I can't get it to work properly. When I try to make a skype call, everything goes through, it dials the #, the phone i'm calling rings and picks up, but they can't hear me, and I can't hear them. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there something i'm missing?
Thanks,
ooc
I've heard an older version of Skype works to an extent.
Do you know what version? Worth a try i guess.
Thanks
I hate to be the bearer of Bad news, but this is my story.
I had a Sprint Mogul (Qwest), I put on the skype Beta version 2.0 which worked and woked well!! but then I went on to verizon, I got a migration to the xv6800 and jumped on it
unfortunately I upgraded the ROM to windows mobile 6.1, and any version of skype from the earliest beta up to 3.8 won't even run the only version that would run is the lates one from the skype website, but just like you, I cannot hear anyone and no one can hear me, I tried everything, scoured every website, Fringe barely worked, but not the way I wanted it to, Skooter worked great but then thats because it actually calls a number that goes through Skype to where ever you want it.. Handy to call abroad, it only uses your minutes from your cell phone plan.
I'm still searching for anything that will work on my phone,, but at the very least, I have a Qwest Mogul that works quite well as a Skype phone so not all is lost.
If anyine knows of a VOIP prgram that can be used by the Mogul with WM 6.1 I would love to hear about it
Thanks
im using skype 2.2.0.20 on a sprint mogul with wm6.1, it works for the most part, although i have to use my BT headset to make calls

Hi. I've tried several versions, but none of them can use the standard mike. BTW, Default, can you post a link to the cab for your working version, please?
The only way I've had some success is using fring, which will let you access the Skype network and use Skypeout credits too, but my problem is it has no softphone numeric pad, so it's useless for calls for automated services which require any menu navigation.
A new alternative came out last week, called Nimbuzz, but it can't connect to Skype on my Mogul.
I'm using dcd 3.3.4 and radio 3.42.50. If any of you get any of these working, please share...
Hello peeps, I posted this in another thread but thought it prudent to create a new thread as well.
I am using an unlocked Hero on the Three Network in the UK, I bought it last month just before they announced that they were releasing the phone with spotify.
Anyway I was able to install the skype client this morning, which, as it was on my old 3 phone, worked perfectly with using any of my minutes.
The issue I know have is that it does not put the phone back to sleep, even after I removed the installation and power cycled my phone... it is awake 100% of the time even after skype has been removed and my power usage has suffered as a result.
I used taskiller to check but skype is not running and I can seem to work out what is running permanently. Any help or ideas (I'm pretty nooby when it comes to this though) would be appreciated.
Cheers,
John.
No such problem here. Just to confirm. Indeed this matter could have been raised in existing thread. Not to worry.
Where can you get the 3 skype client for Hero from? I am currently using the modified iskoot and didn't realise you could get the official 3 skype client now?

It's now available on android market, under skype 3 beta I believe. Or you can go to the three website, go to the skype area, select your phone and enter your number and they will send a text message with the address to download from.
Lucan, you're right, after a couple of resets and reinstalls it seems to be ok now...very weird indeed.
I've noticed when dialling a skype contact it actually believes I am dialing someone else and it comes up with another name in the dialled number lists.
Also not getting any contact details when someone dials in from skype, just details as 'skype contact'. I think i can live with this though...
PLease delete this thread if you think it is necessary,
cheers,
John
actually, scratch my last comments, it does seem to be chewing power when logged into skype...very frustrating!
pkspidermonkey,
Compared to iskoot I and several other have been using in the absense of Skype on 3, it is not too bad. I am sure there will be several releases before final.
Been playing with Skype on the EVO. Skype to Skype calls. Sometimes it works well, sounds is good. Other times, maybe 1 out of 2 times, the sound is very choppy throughout. I tried calling skype on a nexus one and on a computer. All on the same wifi network. Seems to be an issue on the evo only.
Installed KingzKernel #11, and now all seems well.
I was going to say...
I use skype (the apk floating around that has been hacked to work on 3G) averaging 3-5 times a week to talk to family overseas, with each call being 30-60min, using cm6 + snap, with 0 issues. In fact I have been surprised at how little batter it uses.
So I installed dj Steve’s 1.8.1. and I tried installing skype from droidforums.net/forum/xeudoxus/78843-apks-unlocked-apps.html
NOTE: I am in the US and 3g calling is disabled. Well that version in the link doesn't make calls, if I try it says call ended right away. The stock app works great over wifi, but thats it, and id like to use it over 3g like it did with my old captivate sometimes. Anyone know why it doesn't work? Is it a Rom thing, because when on my captivate, it too had the same problem, until I installed a certain Rom (cognition 3.x), and that worked perfectly whereas all the other Roms I tried were a nogo over 3g. Anyone know why this is? Is there any devs working on a US skype 3g?

as we all know, the AT&T Atrix has problem with most VOIP softare. Just wondering if the Canadian Bell version is also experiencing the same problem? If not, that means AT&T is doing more than just turning off HSUPA...
I bought a Bell Atrix two days ago and I am DEFINITELY having issue with Skype either thru. WiFi or 3G connection. I am unable to make clear calls and often encountered LOUD STATIC sound on the earpiece.
Please assist...

No can't do at this moment. Need to wait for Motorola to sort this VOIP issue.

Well, I really do hope Motorola will address this issue...
IM+ Talk Skype Calling
Just an update to using the newly purchased IM+ Talk, a web-based Skype calling service. Well, it took me a whopping two-hour to figure out how to make calls and it was super frustrating...I subsequently had to purchase another Skype subscription (unlimited world, in addition to my original unlimited calls to Hong Kong plan) because of the call-back feature IM+ Talk uses.
So how it works is that you enter the CALL BACK number of the device you are calling on, enter the number you want to call, press the CALL button, and then your device will ring. Answer the call and you will then hear your number connecting. I don't know how to clearly explain it but it works on my Atrix thru. 3G connection

im using an att atrix on Fido in canada and i can use skype just fine. i think its att network that is blocking this somehow not the atrix itself or maybe the combination of the two. so if a bell atrix allows voip on bell network it might still not work on att network.
I am using a Bell Atrix on Rogers and am having a hard time using the Skype for Android to work properly. I previously used Skype on my iPhone 4 (also on Rogers) and it worked like a charm...
I am surprised that it's working for you on Fido. There is a big thread from the Motorola support forum that discusses about this issue.
BELL Atrix ain't working on Fido. none of VOIP apps is, tried Tango, Skype from Market, Skype hacked for 3G, SIPDroid Csip, Fring........
Sux....
sorry I made a mistake. it doesn't work for me the sound is horrible. I only install and made a call and assume it was working.
If the problem with Skype is sound quality it may be that Skype needs updating to support the phone properly. In my experience with Galaxy S the sound quality was horrendous for the first while (that Skype was even functional) until updates sorted things out. Actually it took a while to even be able to login, when it could first be installed it wouldn't accept any login info. Picky program.
Atrix, Skype, IM+, ClickTalk, Tango vs Bad Audio
I've the same problem as all you and i've try the following apps like Skype, Skype(3G), IM+, ClickTalk, Tango and Yahoo....
All exept the Yahoo is work badly with the audio, it cutting off and here i'm talking about using WIFI connection ... with the 3G forget about-it.
Only Yahoo look to get a good result and not mentionning that only the Qvix, Yahoo and Tango as the Video working correctly
As winner the Yahoo Video and Audio work over WIFI.
I'm using also the SMSSpeak, Call Annoncer and EmailSpeak, the playback are for unknown reason playing back too fast. To fix Reboot the phone, i think the audio driver as something to do here too.
I've read also for our Bell Canadian friend that the Firmware is out of date... like far away ... AT&T as the patch to fix this problem of audio in the next release 1.57 and BELL CACA is still at the Beta 0.83 no fix planned!
After chatting with a tech at Motorola we can't dream for a new version until the new kernel will be availlable to get the Android 2.3 (What a great one i was using this on a real google G1 this is a real charm) ... So since we known that BELL, ATT and Motorola are not reading our note, it's useless to try the get them to move ... exept to get everyone who as a Atrix to Call/Email/Fax Motorola,Bell,ATT,Fido ....
and btw Moto is coming with a new phone... they act like this is just junk hardware like a batterie. Change phone to fix.
