EDIT - Thank you all for explaining it:
For anyone else presented with the same issue; use the zipped JMA file in odin in the PDA box and the pit file located at the bottom of the samfirm page when flashing the latest JMA firmware.

Extract them yourself by opening the file with 7Zip or WinZip. They're just archives.
Also - Should be in the General section.

thanks for the tips. I just installed both winzip and 7zip and could not extract the factory.rfs file with either.....
im guessing I have to extract the factory.rfs file and zip as a tar file for odin right?

The file you download is a zip file. Unzip it. There should be a tar file in there, tar is an archive format (similar to the way zip is, only it's uncompressed), so use 7zip or other unarchiving software to untar the file. There will be all of the JMA files including the RFS images contained in the tar file.

I see, so i downloaded a ziped file from samfirmware with the JMA firmware, unziped it down and got the pit file but there were no tar files in there for me to use in odin under the PDA box.
when flashing JMA what file do i put in PDA box? i pressume thats the only file i will use besides the pit file given that i dont want to replace the modem (phone) file...
I'm sorry if this is not making any sense

Use the JMA file here on XDA. Extra JMA.tar. Select that file ALONE as PDA. No repartition, PIT, Phone or CSC. It'll update PDA, Phone and CSC automatically.
If it doesn't reboot on its own after flash is complete, reboot into recovery.
You should be upgrading to JMA from JM6.
If you still need to extract/unpackage RFS->
Reffer to my guide here
Cheers

Ok so i was trying to root my SGS and got stuck in the first step. It says after u download the zip u unzip and there is supposed to be a .tar file. You have to flash a complete stock rom to get the phone to work Gesendet von meinem GT-I9000 mit Tapatalk
Start with settings in Windows file manager = show file extensions (like .tar .zip .txt .exe) Depending on what program used to unzip, .zip and .tar might have same icons. Show file extension to see difference. Sent from my GT-I9000

The zimage file is contained in the .tar, but still you need to flash the .tar file... .Tar files seem like zip files and can be extracted, so to solve the windows showing the file as zipped do as O-T said: O-T said: Start with settings in Windows file manager = show file extensions (like .tar .zip .txt .exe) Depending on what program used to unzip, .zip and .tar might have same icons. Click to collapse Then start ODIN with administrator privileges and use the .tar file (ONLY TAR FILES) as PHONE, do not choose any other file and certainly dont tick re-partition, after all are ready (and your phone is in download mode and recognized by ODIN) press start. If you failed and see the screen with "Phone/YellowTriangle/Computer" do not worry, just pull out the phone battery, leave it with battery off for 30 secs, put the battery back in, get your phone to download mode (guess you are putting your phone to download mode before flashing, right?) and try again using the instructions that you have read in all those posts!

Extracting modem from firmware zip?
Looking to extract the modem from a firmware zip tar file. Any ideas?

would it damage my phone if i use 7zip to create a .tar file to flash?
Hi i have a question about using 7zip to make .tar files to flash with odin. For example, if i want a earlier modem version in my phone, and i extract the modem.bin from a earlier software and put it onto my desktop. I have the option when i open 7zip to select the modem.bin and convert it into a .tar by using the add key and changing the file type. Is this safe to do? I've seen alot of people using cywin and stuff, but 7zip seems like its much easier. thanks
[Guide]Odin Failed While Flashing Stock Frimware
Many people find this issue while flashing stock frimware via Odin That after system.img is done Odin gets failed so I came up with a fix. 1) On pc open the firmware with winrar (or any other software like 7zip) 2)Then extarct the file named hidden.img from it to any place. 3) Rename the hidden.img file as hidden.img.tar . 4)Reflash the frimware through odin 5)You will get failed again but now flash the hidden.img.tar with odin now it will be successful and your phone will boot.
If the problem is still there or anyone needs to ask something qoute this post and not the whole first post (please)
@naimrlet mention this in the master thread too
This problem also occurs when you are flashing a different stock frimware for same device (e.g. different country firmware for same device) like people flashing aol1 for g531h to make s6/j7 mod by @ERICKONIX, work. This fix will also work that case too

Click to collapse No it involves flashing the hidden because if you rename with the extension it becomes tar. But sometimes you need to turn an option on the pc to see the extension but to know that it became tar when you rename it, the icon changes from winrar to the icon associated with tar files
