Problem with GPS - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi guys. Using android on my HD2 and the GPS works great before.
However, right now it always miscalculated my location like 2~3 km away from my original place (Such as home)
Using Desire ROM & Desire HD ROM and both Google Maps same result. Even the Location provided in DHD Rom also same ...
Mind to tell me how to solve it? Thanks.

Google Maps GSM-Based My Location on HTC Universal

Hi all, has anyone been able to run the google maps "my location" service on a HTC Universal using the GSM triangulation? If it works for you, please post the windows-mobile version, country and provider. It's not working for me (WM 6.1, O2 Germany, tried with UMTS and GSM.) WLAN-based locator is working. Thx for feedback!
GSM based locator shouldn't work on Uni because of the ril driver it has now.
If someone managed to patch it...
my location with google maps works for me (gsm, umts)
my location with the hero ui doesnt work (gsm, umts)
o2 germany
htc touch diamond 2
no difference between all roms i've tried with and without hero ui

I think you are in the wrong forum, my friend. Are we talking about Universal (which is the name of the device, not the general forum for all devices) here??? With Universal it doesn't work. My location works for me on my Elf, but we are not talking about Elf, right?
It did work for me sometimes... But all i get now is your current location is temporarily unavailable....( using version 3.2.1).. If i get it working again i'll post some screenshots...
I don't think the radio gives back transmitter location (codes), so it is impossible to work on Uni. That is unless it's the ril.dll (maybe a particular ROM was able to extract the information from the radio?).
I've only ever got it working with my external GPS.
ok got it working currently i'm using tomals 8.9 rom and google map 3.2.1 and i can get my location...
see attached screenshots ...
google maps on orange
rajivshahi, how did you manage that? doesn't work for me
Perhaps it's the operator that does it.
I'm with Orange, and if I go to Orange Local it tells me where I am... (see piccy1)
Pity Google Maps doesn't do the same for me.
raji.. as you have it working, can I ask request:
can you run the fieldtest program (attached) and see what you get for NCell Info on GSM? (see piccy2)
Not working for me. The same Tomal 8.9 (128Mb) and Google Maps version.
Just tested now again and it still works..
When using wifi it shows my location but while using activesync it doesn't mostly i use wifi here.......
@ jonny
nothing in ncell info see folllowing pic..
Thanks Raji.., ok how does Google Maps operate then? I thought they used Cell ID. It can't be as complex as knowing your router location (have you tried over GPRS?). The only other thing is that they are in cahoots with the operator (oh, I just scared myself, that sounds too much like Matrix!)
ok,that's scary. it works
I'm using xplode's wm6.5 ROM, connected to my router by WiFi, using GoogleMaps (same v. as you)... and it's nearly pinpointed my location!
however, it doesn't work over GPRS, so back to square 1, I'm sorry.

Well i always thought it was issue with the rom, but today when i tried it without wifi it didn't work so i tried again on wifi and it did work.. i repeated the process several times to come to conclusion that google map uses the router to get the location... that's pretty strange... well hope for some words from the masters about this new finding.....

[Q] I have never been able to pick up a GPS signal with android?

Hey guys! My problem is that no matter what Windows mobile/Android rom I use, I never can lock on a GPS signal. I have tried GPS status but all that does is just run and run without ever picking up a signal.
Here's what I'm dealing with:
WM Rom: OzDROID 2.00
Radio: Radio_Leo_2.15.50.14
Android Rom: MCCM SE V3.3
Kernal: Hastarin r8.4
What could I be missing guys? I have tried numerous combinations but all get the same result.
I have also tried running Quick GPS but that also does nothing.
Do you think that this has something to do in Winmo that I'm not doing right or does it probably just have to do with the Android side?
me 2, in winmo worked just fine, but in android, no signal.
Update that radio and Rom. I will send exactly what I'm using. No internet drop, gps, and navigation works flawless....

Also change that android build.

Here's an update on what I have changed
WM Rom: OzDROID 2.00
Radio: Radio_Leo_2.15.50.14
Android Rom: MCCM SE V3.3
Kernal: Hastarin r8.4
Like I said I have tried numerous WM and Android Roms with all the same results. I once got a great GPS signal on a froyo build that I can't remember the name of, but decided to switch back to sense because I like it better.
Are there any special things that I need to do in WM before I boot Android? Like have airplane mode on or something like that?
I've used MDJ Sense v2.2 rEVO and right now MDJ Matted v1.4. I got GPS signals with both builds. It does take minimum 5 mins to get satellite signal tho, and you need to be outside.
Use mdj sense v 1.7 its fine with me..or try use fasterfix

Anyone else have any ideas?
this is a stupid question but did you make sure to stand outside while trying to get a luck on the gps? What app were you using when trying to get a lock? Google map? Copilot?

Yes, I tried inside and out. I was using google maps and gps status.
there's no point trying inside, if you can't even get one outside.
just try using gps status, downloading the gps assisstance data, then just standing out side for a good 15 minutes just to ensure you don't get a signal, because you may just be impatient!
if after that you still don't get one, perhaps try a different android build
i use m-deejays and gps is flawless! quicker lock than my satnav, probably due to the assistance data!

Gps issue

I have DHD for a month now... With the stock Rom, I can't lock with Gps, but the programs like Gps status, are finding 4 to 8 satellites... but always with signal above the average... with cyanogen 7, Gps lock in 10 seconds... now I have leeDroid hd and sometimes it locks and others....
Is something that I can do to fix that SOFTWARE bug???
Has anyone the same problem???

Hi there...
Try to let gps status download agps data eg. once a day, and see if that will help...
The gps in this device is not that good at all, when compared to eg. all the Sonyericsson x10 series phones...
The gps in the dhd need ALL the help it can get to just work a lille below avarge and for me automatic agps data download helped a little...

I have never been able to get the gps to work on my dhd for apps such as cardio trainer. As far as I know, even when the phone does get a gps lock, it will lose it when the screen goes off. Very annoying.

I can concur that the GPS on the desire HD is not so good. I use an app called Quick Fix and I fix the GPS satelite location to Europe which helps with fixing the signal quicker but a problem that I experience a lot is when I am in the mids of navigating to some place by car (google navi) my location seems to be jumping, especially when I slow down to take a turn... the GPS seems to go nuts and it pretends that I've taken the wrong route starts rerouting etc. Its really annoying.. anyone else with the same problem? any ideas how to fix it ?
Is this a common problem with this device?
Im considering the HTC inspire, currently using samsuck craptivate.
one of its problems is faulty gps. I dont want to go from one phone with bad gps to another with the same problem.
I discovered that the GPS is not too bad. Actually when you optimize it its quite good. Do the quck gps fix and set the server to europe or whereever your are located. Let the rom fix a signal a few times and then the connection will be quite reliable. Its not as good as SE or Motorolla droid devices but It will do the Job!
With the DHD you get an excellent phone; it would be a shame to discart it from the list of potential devices for such "small" error depending on how much you need that feature.
Can I fix it??

Desire hd - no gps at all

Hello. I have had the phone since xmas, I don't know if it came with Android 2.1 or 2.2, anyway I am now with the latest update, default Rom with adw launcher ex for the home screens. recently I needed the gps, it's been weeks now, and I could nevEr use it. I got the signal only once and it took such a long time and it found only 3 satellites. At least I know the gps hardware receiver works.
I have already used status gps, agps function with WiFi and 3g, mysatellites, gps test. Didn't try a hard reset, since I know there can be an easier and more comfortable solution.
Which one is it?

The phone has been bought in Switzerland...forgot to say.

GPS is of very low quality on android phones and it really depends on AGPS service. IPhone has the best GPS of them all connects in 7 seconds without AGPS
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
Desire HD has a gps chip/sensor built in and can find a GPS signal on its own without network signal but it take a while. Try using an app such as GPS Test. A-GPS will provide faster signal because it will use network triangulation.
If the GPS is so bad as you say, why does GPS Test find the sattelites in about 5 seconds and locks on in about 10 seconds? (with 3g/ wifi off)
The lock on time has a lot do do with the radio firmware. Which one are you using?

@niks_5in you are wrong and your answer was incorrect. What should you say then if I say that with my touch HD and windows mobile I had a gps fix in 3 seconds? we don't need a winner in this thread, we just need to solve the GPS problem I have.
@karthics4 I did write that I already used gps test, status gps, mysatellites....fix doesn't happen. I can find maybe 3 satellites after half an hour, the next day is the same story. Even with AGPS, refreshing position and everything...I also have a 3G connection when I am outside...i can find my position with AGPS but of course it is not as precise as the normal GPS position....it just cannot get the fix on the satellites. even if I download the latest AGPS data before searching the satellites.
@Flussen I don't know which radio. How do I check that? I have read about people having no problems with GPS on desire hd...and then after some updates of android system they started losing signal or even never getting a fix on the signal....i cannot say it is what happened to me. I should maybe hard reset and see if before the updates the gps worked fine. But I really don't want to hard reset since I have many applications, and games with saved datas...
Isn't this GPS problem with desire hd a common problem? I thought many people had those issues with the gps...

Is your phone rooted? Because if it is, then the easiest way if all else fail is to flash a new Radio version.
I occasionally have issues with the gps which are solved by the gps status app, with the newer radio and roms haven't had an issue for a while now. Fixes in around 5 seconds

do u use any casing for ur DHD.. I've had hard time on gps locking when using silicon case..
I am not using any Rom I have not rooted my device. But as far as GPS goes my old Nokia n82 locks faster than DHD. DHD will lock in 5 to 15 seconds using AGPS. Without AGPS forget the GPS. It will take ages

I can get a lock using HTC Locations in around the same time with just GPS and quite accurate to boot.
I can say the GPS/AGPS of the DHD is better than the E71, at least.
Fix
I am not sure if you found a solution or not but i just managed to fix my own gps that has been broken for almost a year. Here's how I did it:
Remove the cover for the LED-light. The GPS-antennae hides behind it. Check the connectors for dirt and the circuits to make sure they are whole. Mine wasn't. I managed to solder them back to shape and can now get a lock in a few seconds, even while indoors.

[Q] GPS on Windows Mobile vs Android. Which one is better?

Hi all, I am about to go on a trip where I will probably need to use my GPS more than ever.
Thanks to a brilliant developer tytung we now have AGPS on Android Gingerbread, but I have not yet been able to have the same results as I've had in WM 6.5.
What is your experience, is Android GPS on this device as good as in Windows Mobile?
I would like to use it on a wonderful island called Cyprus. I have already downloaded the iGo with the map, but so far GPS on Android with this phone has not convinced me.
Let me know what your thoughts are on this subject, and if I should try to use Android with the GPS or just flash WM6.5 for this trip.
Thank you all in advance.
On my TMOUS phone that uses Hyperdroid CM7 v2.1.0, it is as fast as I remember WM6.5 and is certainly as fast as my wife's MyTouch4G when finding the GPS signals. But I am using a customized gps.conf file that I optimized for my area. Checking AngelDeath's GPS thread, there isn't a Cyprus file to download. He suggests using the Europe or Turkey gps.conf files. Using Tytung's v1.7 NMEA file is working very fast. My first lock with the phone off overnight is now under 10 seconds. Relocks during the day are 5 seconds or less. I am not sure how fast a lock you would receive since you will be using a more "general" gps.conf file. But judging what others are experiencing on their Gingerbread builds using a much more general gps.conf that myself, I would suspect using your phone in an Android mode for GPS should work fine. But if have any doubt, then I would make sure to have WM6.5 operating on your phone.
Using the Tytung 1.7 libraries, my Android GPS performs equal or better than when I was using WM6.5.
Combine the suggestions of robrob777 (Tytung 1.7 libraries - from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1100114, whether NMEA or RPC pends on your ROM) and slbenz (......a customized gps.conf file, information available on http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/ , your performance will be same or even better.........enjoy you trip !!
As for AGPS goes... I think there's no difference between WM and Android anymore.
However, depending on the place you will go, you might want to take into consideration the GPS software available.
In my area, Garmin is the best, but it's not available on Android.
First of all I want to thank you all for contributing to this topic. I must try a new ROM with those updated libraries, to test it decently. So far I have been a MIUI adept and hopefully the new versions have better GPS support.
As I already said before, I will be using iGO my way, as it is the only off-line GPS software for which I was able to get the maps of Cyprus. I'll try to use it here in Belgium as soon as I download the Belgium map.
One thing that I liked on the WM6.5 was the quick GPS option, where you could just connect to any Wifi connection and update the file which would last for 1 week.
Any such option in the Android builds? I hope the roaming charges just for the AGPS aren't that high.
Anyone has any experience in this field?
Try gps status: tools-agps data-download
or the tool tytung provided in his thread, you can find it when you read the last five pages.
