Front facing camera and the apps that utilize it. - Nexus S General

So I just tried using Tango with a Nexus S to another Nexus S. Audio quality is great. The camera on the other hand tho doesn't switch to the front facing one. It stays on the back camera.
The QIK app for T-Mobile video chat doesn't even download from the market and if you look in the comments there's a lot of "fc's on nexus s"
Just a heads up to anyone still looking to purchase a Nexus S.
I'm sure these issues will probably be resolved soon with a new update to Tango.

Just got a Tango call, camera wouldn't switch to the FFC. The software needs to be updated which probably will happen in the next few days

it blows my mind that they didnt release anything natively with Gingerbread. that was a huge fail on google part

Try Fring... I'm yet to try any so thanks 4 the heads up. My friend is getting hers tonight so we'll try fring later

Honey comb is going to bed the major overhaul update that will bring that. You want a polished experience, not something half baked.

no fring does not work either

neither does the yahoo messenger app with the video call plugin. all these apps need to be updated that's all.

jeez its about that time

Qik actually seems to work for me. It was a titanium restore but Evo to NS is working here

ooVoo just sent me an email claiming my phone can use it but NS isn't an option and if I choose another device they say it's not available for that device.... BS

Update 3/15 Skype Keeps Backing Out On Video Call Support For Android.

Skype is long overdue for Android. There was supposed to be support on the Xoom tablet, but reports show yesterday that they withdrawed their business/services for the tablet and future laptop/devices .Its word going around that now they will continue to work on a better agreement to bring video chat to the platform. I looked online and alot of Androidians (lol) arent too happy with this. Everyone is wondering was there a Apple pay-off and what is taking so long. Will Skype video chat/3g calls every come to us?
Don't know why Google didn't write their own freaking application for it. I video call through gmail on my laptop fine, seems like the logical step to integrate their phones and tablets into that.
Seriously if Google isn't going to step up and write some BASIC polished apps for their own platform rather than having devices being released half-baked, apple is going to continue to dominate the tablet market.

Unless things like this change, I won't be using the Android platform in the future. One of my top priorities/needs is great app support. If you don't have that, all this new hardware is useless IMO.

It's not just Android, if you check the last update for the Linux client, don't be surprised how long ago that was (January 20, 2010; 13 months ago from Wikipedia).
I've already completely lost faith in Skype, I don't trust them anymore.
ehm??? no 3G calling?
what have i been doing the last few day's?
you can call with 3G.wel atleast i can.
Using skype over 3g service and video calls. And no you haven't been doing it

I don't think that Skype has any intention of releasing a free Android app. They seem to only be interested in installing video-enabled Skype on devices sold by manufacturers/carriers that will pay them directly. e.g. Verizon or Nokia.
Of course, the strange part of all this is that Skype w/video is available for iPhone 4.
Oh well, if Google releases video chat before skype does, then my skype account, along with the rest of my family's, will be gone.
Sorry if this is a noob question but is it possible to extract the apk of Skype from a Verizon phone and install it on others?

i have been questioning this as well. why it didnt happen yet.
unless :
- there is no phone that is out right now and has skype video call in it
OR
- even if they managed to do so, it wont connect to skype network so it was useless " something to do with skype knowing your phone before it connect to the server, and if the phone is not registered in their database, it wont connect.
There's always Fring;
http://www.fring.com/android/
That said, as a Skype subscription holder it'd be nice to have video supported.
Think about the legal ramifications. Google talk is praticially installed on every device and can't be uninstall. Remember way back when Netscape sued Microsoft for having monopolistic capatilism with having IE installled by default? Eventually they got told By the surpreme court that they have to allow more competitive practice with third party vendors. as far as I can see Google is allowing third party vendors to coexist with their own apps...and thank good. I lovvvve my choices. I'm sure we'll see a filtered down version of honeycomb to smartphone. I bet Google chat will even come as a newly downloadable app from the market with such features. Google certainly have their hands fill. I'm pretty sure they got their hands fill for coding for tablets and smartphones at the same time.
Btw I hate using Skype...why doesn't the app have a turn off button?

heh that means my theory is right. damn i am good
There is a Skype app. It does make (voice only) calls over 3G (and 4G if you believe all the marketing hype). I use it quite regularly to talk with my family back in the US.
As for Google taking forever to put out all these apps, you have to understand that they are subject to the same dev process all other app developers are. They have to wait until the SDK is available. Yeah, they may get it a bit sooner than other devs, but I'd say only a week at most before. It doesn't benefit them to hold out just to get their stuff (apps) out first. And it takes time to produce [email protected]$$ apps. If you dev outside of an existing engine, even longer.
I praise Google for what they've done so far and I look forward to their contributions.

UHHHH, no video calls?

Uhhh, whats the point of selling a phone with a front facing camera, if the phone doesn't come with the software right off the bat?? LOL
Anyways, is there a work around for this with one of the ROMS?
Thanks!!
theres tango in the market..qik..and you can google the fring beta for the atrix
Blame google for not having a way to video chat, not Motorola for including it on the phone.

For one thing - the sarcasm is childish. Two, if anyone actually READ the forum RULES, it says - SEARCH BEFORE POSTING..... Its not a difficult concept. Third, all this does is CLUTTER the forum with crap that doesnt need to be here.
Tango works, but it's unreliable and compare to facetime it's crap. Google needs to make facetime for android.
Google needs to add video support to Google Talk.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
and if I want to call to someone don't have a smartphone....like samsung f480 without that software
So there is no videocall option? are they serious? not everybody have qik or other software...just a usual videocall over 3g
I think its a probleme with android and not the phone it self...
I already have the dezire z and nexus S and they have a front camera but can't do a video call to another phones without this softwares
motorola wrote a crapy motoblur and was unable to wrote a normal videocall app???
p.s. moto had a super videocall option on their phones - they can even record video!
I see video calling as one of those things that would be great to do someday but for now its just another come on gimmick. Without every single phone being able to video call (not video chat) and being compatible with all the other phones out there I see no real reason for it other than a gimmicky thing. Having said that, my wife has the iPhone 4 and she has been after me to get it also so we can video call. Like the droids, the iPhone 4 can video call but only with another iPhone 4. It may be that when they come out with the iPhone 5 this summer that it may not be able to video call with the iPhone 4.
Now, since ATT saw fit to shove an update on my Atrix that essentially locked it up even more I am seriously considering going to the iPhone 4 and make my wife happy so she can see my pretty face when she calls me. She calls me once a day to ask how I am and give me a shopping list. I can see her calling me several times a day now just so she can video call, Oh joy! And if I don't accept her request to video call I can see myself in the dog house for a while.
we really need Skype Video or Google Video Chat ASAP.

What is a usual video call over 3g? Isn't every video call use some sort of software. I mean I know what you mean but aren't those on really old nokia phones pre 3g? Android has quik Iphone has facetime.. windows has.. Who cares?

the most people have a old phones, or don't have a wifi or 3g plan for internet....but they can do a video call for free...like in portugal...call's and video calls are free with all mobiles....like samsung to nokia, htc to other...withou internet plan or wifi connection....soo....

It is most unfortunate - but I'm betting someone will come out with a "compatible" app in due time, if Skype doesn't wake up.
Alternately, I'd take an official Google Talk video chat solution.

I have found that ooVoo works really well.
Hopefully Skype will do something with Qik to get around their exclusivity with Verizon.
Or even better, Google get off their asses and start using the video call framework that's been in the API since at least 2.1. They bought Gizmo5, who was doing SIP video calling using h.264 on my Nokia n810 back in '07. It was essentially what Apple's FaceTime is now.
I've been using Yahoo Messagings video chat because my wife doesn't have a smart phone that does video, so being able to connect with a computeri s a must for me, but the video is sideways. Does OOVOO not have this problem?

ooVoo is the best around. It has a small footprint, displays correctly and works (when it does) flawlessly.
My only problem with it is it's inconsistency making calls. Sometimes it will show the user online; sometimes it won't.

Not surprising to me really. While I like a lot of things about Google their 'statup' operation strategy with lots of independently operating teams leads to this.
I say the same thing all the time with official Google apps for Android. Where's my official Google Analytics/AdWords/Docs/Talk app? I know all of these can be addressed in various ways by 3rd party apps or tertiary functionality in other apps. But I'd like to see some official Google apps for some as their official apps usually tend to be good quality.
More than likely video chat on google will be release at Honeycomb and hopefully with some devs help we'll have it for our froyo devices.

+1 Tango! Simple to use, and it streams extremely well on either 3G or 4G (best). I've use Yahoo, Qik, etc. and found those apps can be quirky and probably worked best on Wifi.

My problem with ooVoo was a perpetual attempt to sync, draining my battery. Their support said they'll be removing that from the next release but until then it's staying off my device.

+1, same here, drains battery fast.
I've had that same issue with Oovoo, it's literally killed my battery extremely fast to reach and sync with nothing. But other than that it's the only logical choice for Video chatting until Skype and Verizon stop screwing everyone over with Exclusiveness.

what is the BEST video chat app?

I know they're a lot of people wondering like myself.. What do you guys think is the best video chat app currently out that works best for our phones... I use to love Tango but it stopped working for me and my Wife's Epic.. of course its been a few months since I used it.. But which do you think is the best? I figured I would ask before throwing another 10 apps on my phone for testing. Also what roms are you running with it?

Let me break it down:
Here is a list of the video call apps that I know to be available. If i'm missing one, let me know. I'd love to try it out:
Tango (Android/iPoop) - I'm going to assume this is the most popular. Video quality seems to be pretty good. I do have some occasional feedback issues with audio, but that comes and goes. The latest version of Tango FC'd everytime I opened it, but luckily for me, I had the version right before the update backed up, so I'm still in business.
Fring (Android/iPoop) - This was the first app I used for video calls. It did the job. I haven't used it in a while, and I know they've improved on it. I switched to Tango because everyone I knew was using it.
Qik (Android/iPoop) - I've never used Qik. At first it didn't support iPoop, and that was the only people I had to talk to via video call. Friends i've spoken with that use it don't seem to prefer it over any of the other solutions, so I haven't really had the urge to try it myself.
Yahoo Messenger (Android/iPoop/PC) - I've had mixed results with Yahoo. It seems to work pretty well for the most part, and is useful when chatting phone to PC as it's simple and alot of people already have a yahoo ID. The only issue I had with it was the video was always tilted sideways no matter which way I held my phone...
Google Talk (Android/PC) - I went down this road when I tried the leaked Gingerbread ROM. I had high hopes, but this was pretty much unuseable for me. I was able to connect, but video was too choppy at best. I'm positive this will improve in the future, but as of today, I don't recommend it.
ooVoo (Android/iPoop/PC) - This is an interesting app. It allows conference calling, so you can actually carry on video calls simultaneously with more than one user. I used this shortly and tested it for a phone to PC call and it seemed to be pretty decent. I'd have to give it a little more time and testing, but my first impression was that it did the job pretty well.
Skype (Android/iPoop/PC) - I know this one is new. I think there's a thread if you want to try to get this to work on your phone. Haven't tried it... can't really speak on it. I would check out the thread if you're interested. I'm sure there's feedback there.
As with everything on this community, YMMV. And keep in mind, all of my opinions are based on using the app with a wi-fi connection, so if you're going with 3g or 4g, you'll just have to test what's out there and see what gives you the best quality call. I hope this helps at least a little bit.
If nothing else, it'll at least give you some options to try.
I just used a modded skype for froyo over 4g and it worked beautifully except for the fact that I was sideways on my friends comp.
It was mad clear! He also said I was laggy a bit but I blame that on the 4g. I haven't tried wifi.
You can try it. When you go to the thread about skype 2.0 in the themes and app section, click the link that talks about the sgs2 or w/e and then there will be another link where the author says "TRY THIS ONE FOR FROYO"
That's the one ^_^

Well, Skype owns QIK so hopefully there will be some crossover pretty soon. Trouble is, even if it's the best program in the world it doesn't matter if your friends aren't using it. Skype is the one everyone else in the PC world seems to use, so now that it'll work on android, that's the one for me.

Qik comes pre-installed on a lot of phones in the U.S. Whoever you're video-calling has to have Qik also. I'm guessing in Europe Qik would be a waste. It doesn't do anything that Skype (with video) doesn't do too. Microsoft also just bought them so I'd imagine it'll get absorbed in to Skype anyway.
