Same here.
I think it requires froyo.
need to tap location button twice.
Tapping the location button twice activates the compass mode that makes the map rotate with the direction you're facing.
The actual map rotation gesture requires 2.2 so we're SOL for the moment haha.

We're talking about being able to rotate the map via multitouch, not compass.
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=1079043
For some reason it lists Galaxy S but not any of the US carrier models, maybe that's why? Maybe they just did a hard check for those models because they might not have a good way to check for touchscreen features properly.

Phone in the video on their blog looks like a US Galaxy S device. Probably a Vibrant (I'm secretly hoping it's a Fascinate)...

the notes on the gesture section state
Note:
Rotating gestures require Android OS 2.2 or later.
This list of devices may be incomplete and may change in the future as new Android phones are available for purchase.
How the hell did you get the 3d working?

Much the same really. Just seems to add Buzz and move a couple of options around. Nothing special
Street view is now much better, it finally allows you to pan up/down as well as left/right.

This feature was already present in google maps 3.3.1.
P.s.: buzz seems interesting.
Actually I could not find anything new
You access streetview by holding anywhere .. box with address will popup .. you click that .. and then you can select streetview from details about the place.

Buzz is new, other than that I think it's the same old (unless the Wikipedia layer is also new - haven't noticed it before anyhow).
It'll be very interesting to see what Google's plans are for Buzz in the future. It's a rather cool app/idea as is.
Hmm.. The GPS accuracy seems to have improved..
Also when you tap on a particular point on a map.. it loads info about that place in a pop up..

That was in previous version .. that is nothing new.
Buzz .. I see .. well .. we'll see
hmm
I dont understand, how do u activate the street view function?
Tap and hold a point on the map and a balloon will pop-up with options. It may take a second or two to appear but a link to Streetview will appear in that list IF streetview is available in the area that you are looking at.
I haven't noticed anything new (other than Buzz) but the pinch-to-zoom feature still lacks accuracy. The point on the map I'm looking at (for instance, my location) always moves off to the top-right as I zoom in or out.
Since the zoom is not fluent, I see no point in pinch-zooming. Buttons works just as well.
Actually starting with this version I'm seeing the app use the integrated compass to indicate heading.
I tried installing that special GPS driver to get the compass to work in GMaps a few days ago and couldnt get it working so uninstalled it... but this version of GMaps just did it on its own!

You don't have whole Buzz .. only map related Buzz. You can turn it on in Layers. New icon will appear to add new map-Buzz. Generally you mark some point on the map, you add comment to it, and then all your followers can see that point too, if they add Buzz layer.

No. I wish google made new version using 3D acceleration, for both smooth zooming and streetview (or even navigation as it is on Android). I hope such version is in progress. On the other hand, calling this version new major makes me think that they don't take WM platform much seriously.

I would love to be able to rotate my phone in any direction and have the screen flip like on my omnia... I know sense doesn't flip to landscape, thats not a prob, what I really want is to be able to flip the phone upside down and still use it as the correct rotation.
Reason I want to be able to do this is so I can use my phone in the cup holder of my car again, and to do this it must be upside down because of the charger placement... (same as on my Omnia)
Seems a pretty simple request, would be nice if it could auto run and run in the background without using up to much resources to.
If anyone is able to do this, would be awesome.
Thanks
Seconded ... but
I too would like to be able to rotate at least the other way; when showing off the Incredible, people rotate to landscape the other way and nothing happens, so they figure it doesn't rotate. I have to say "no turn it the other way" but it would be great to just not have to think about it.
BUT ... regarding the OP ... I simply took a dremel to the dash mount I bought (the beanbag, since California law doesn't allow sticking to the window in the middle). Carved out enough for a charger, and am done with it
I'd also like to see this. Anyone know the reasoning behind only allowing landscape mode by rotating to the left, and not the right? Even my old BB storm could handle rotation in both directions.
Agreed. This would be useful.

I would think it's because the majority of the world is right-handed and by rotating to the left, the optical track button is on the right side. I could complain because I'm left-handed, but hey at least my phone still has a signal when I hold it in my left hand, unlike other phones out there
This is an option in the cyanogen rom available in the rom manager. If you can look past the few bugs in the rom you can enjoy the 360 degree rotation you are looking for.

My phone aint even rooted yet, for some reason I've tried everything and won't allow me to get into adb recovery... anyways, if it's in another rom, it must be possible, if someone could make this an app!! it would be awesome.

Yup, 270 degree rotation is a feature of FroYo for this phone. It works on several apps like GPS as well as in the settings menus. I think I remember seeing a line of code somewhere here that allowed you to enable or disable 270 degree rotation so it did not rotate to the right. So maybe enabling 360 degree rotation wouldn't be that hard?

The issue isn't 360 degrees (which would be back to "normal"), it's 180 degrees. The rotation lets you have only 3 rotations: 0 (normal), 90 (right side on bottom) and 270 or -90 (left side on bottom). I guess they thought that nobody would want 180 (top on bottom) for whatever reason.

you're absolutely right, I have no idea what I was thinking? I guess I meant 360 all the way around, to include 180..but that's definitely not what came out.
but I agree, I doubt I would really ever use the 180 degree position, but to have it enabled would be nice. Kind of like an iPad, you can use it no matter which way you pick it up.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab does this also! So if someone wants to work this out it would be pretty awesome

My old(now bricked epic) had full 360 degree rotation, including upside down.
I was running Vision Kernel 1.2(however, I'd recommend trying 1.1 since 1.2 has been causing bricks)
Not sure if it includes it, but i know it was working upside down on mine the other day.

I actually flashed a bunch of kernels in a few days, it may have been Genocide.
I'm running SRF 1.1.
And I only noticed it because I picked up my phone at what I thought was upright position and went to hit the menu button and realized I was pressing where the FFC is.
If I can figure out what combo allowed it, I'll be glad to let you know.
I cant remember, but isnt it a custom launcher function, given youre on froyo?? Idunno... just tried and I cannot, midNight current version w journaling, launcherpro. Maybe ADW launcher??? Genocide kernel may be it, I have only tried the very early releases of it. But I know it is definitely not an option of SRF 1.1, as that is what I am running. Custom launcher may be it too, I have never used anything but TW and launcher pro. LP doesn't have this option, that's what I am running and that's what comes with SRF 1.1. I think this option has to be rom based, or maybe it is within the kernel, I do not know.

I use LP Sense UI, but I just tried recreating it and only got 270 degree rotation.
I KNOW I'm not crazy, aha. Hmm, I'm going to take a look at the framework and see if I can't figure out a way to enable it for any ROM.
EDIT: Just remembered my build environment got wiped when I reformatted PC.
Regardless, the file that controls rotation should be in /system/framework.jar, if someone has a build enviroment, they can take a look at the XML.
This is assuming, of course, that Samsung didn't make a crazy change and hide it elsewhere.

Its not in the framework, its just part of the build.prop file, thats it (sounds wayyy too simple, I know).
So basically just do the opposite, change false to true. Normally I'd use something like "Root Explorer" and edit the build.prop file in the text edit mode.

From what I can tell, this is for 2.1 only. I looked in our build.prop and this line isn't there, which makes me think it's a part of framework.jar now.

So I've recently published an application to the Android Market and I'm trying to get the app to pass Amazon's approval process, but they keep citing a force close bug on only the Motorola Atrix, which I don't have access to.
If anyone could help me out with testing the application on an Atrix and could possibly send a log or something, that'd be great. We could do some tweaks and then send it back to you to test again.
Really need your help guys.

To be more specific, the bug would occur when you click on the map button at the bottom of the main screen to view your (or your friends') positions on the map.
If you can get to the map without a force close, then maybe only the stock rom is affected by this bug.

Thanks a lot! I assume you sent the bug via the force close dialog, so it will show up in the dev section of the Android Market, correct?
As a side note, we've been trying to use an Atrix virtual device to debug the app and have had trouble launching it because the virtual machine doesn't like some of the GPS calls or something. You guys are helping me out a lot.
Anyone else that wants to try, it would still help to have a larger sample size.
Thanks!

Running on a stock Atrix, I had no problems viewing my location on the map.
Not quite sure where to post this, so I'll try here. Mods, please move to the correct forum if it is in the wrong one.
Back when the OG Droid came out, the screen could rotate all 4 ways (up, landscape left, landscape right, upside down). Never had a need for it, but it was cool. I noticed that as Android evolved, being able to hold your device upside down disappeared. Again, never had a need for it, so IO didn't care.
Now, I need it. In my car, I put the phone in the cupholder of my armrest/center console. Because the charging and headphone jack is on the bottom, I have to operate everything upside down. Is this an Android or manufacturer *feature* that was removed? Can it be put back? Can a mod be made to make it work?
I don't want a dock for my phone, I've had them before, and don't like them. I also like to have full control of my phone, not just what the manufacturer wants me to control.
Thanks.

Dang. There were a few options but that one looked promising by the description.
Try a search in the app store for "Reverse Portrait" and give the free ones a shot...? Some seem to have a "force" option for when it doesn't happen automatically (or lock in reverse portrait). If they can be invoked with one click, it wouldn't seem too much of an inconvenience.
Edit: Rotation Control Lite was the one I was looking at, might try that myself.
