Guys, the new google maps 5 is out. Seems like it has some really nice new features. Head onto marketplace and update.
The write up is on pocketnow.

Can someone post .apk, please? Google updates not available in Market in some countries.
http : //is.gd/iRddp
Thanks so much for the .apk! Cheers man!
The 3D feature doesn't work for me on JDMS 1.6.2 build unfortunately.
Anyone get that to work? on which android build?
edit: Nevermind it works, my area was just too flat?!!
i couldn't make it work on my phone (see config below) either
Anyone get the map rotation to work using gestures? Only way I can make the map rotate is by using compass mode, but that requires me to be at the location I want to rotate the map around.
couldnt find the .apk file anywhere? neither in the market is the app??? where can i grab that??

Placing two fingers on the screen and moving them laterally in opposing directions worked for me.

which android build do you have? as others said i can't do that :\
thanx man you are best
Mine works great on the EVO Black & Blue Remix ROM, but London 3D has not been enabled yet
You make it 3D by putting two fingers on the screen and dragging down and I can make it rotate by putting my index finger and my thumb on the screen and rotating them in a circle. As dumb as this sounds, you really do have to practice a bit to get it to work. I'm using
EVO Carbon Remix V0.5 by motoman234
Thanks for the link.
1. Gestures work fine
2. I don't see any 3d landscape though
Are there any settings where you can activate 3D buildings and compass mode?
Update: Map stays stationary and only the blue arrow rotates.
Update 2: 3D buildings work only in some major cities around the world (i have found Chicago, Berlin untill now) and only if your zoom is at 100m/200ft and you must have all layers (terrain - sattelite) turn off.
Samsung Galaxy S - Froyo
I cant spin motion the map! I tried every means possible
I think the map rotate is limited to roms that are designed for phones that support distinct multitouch. I am using the hd2one which is built for the nexus one which doesn't have distinct multitouch... does anyone know how we can trick Google maps into performing the rotate function without flashing a different rom?

You can use this file, copy it to your hd2one/root/system/etc/permissions then reboot. I copied it from the desire_hd2 build and it works.

Direct Link for those looking for the file buzz killington was talking about. Google Maps 5.0 now works as advertised! Hope this helps some others out there wanting to get the rotate gesture working.

So i dont know if this has been discussed or if anyone noticed this. My GF was using google maps on my x10 and did the pinch to zoom motion out of habit (she has a samsung vibrant). Well it actually zoomed in on google maps. I tried it myself over and over and it zooms. I just cant zoom back out, only zoom in. Why os this? Is it multi touch or some weird error? Could anyone else try pinch to zoom. It ONLY works in google maps.

Yeah, noticed that too!!
it consider it like a double tap. (one tap by finger)

I saw this from another post as well. I've heard that it's a bug on Google Maps version 4.1.1 but doesn't that sorta confirms that the X10 is capable of multitouch? Personally I couldn't get the pinch and zoom to work on Google maps cuz I think I have a different version but there were times when I swiped across the screen and it zoomed in automatically. I wanted to post a thread here too but I know that multitouch topic is a taboo Anyway...I'm curious as well.

I think this happens because Google maps thinks that is a double tap. I noticed the same thing happens sometimes with Opera mini browser too (atleast for me)

Ya you're right, it's just looking at it as a double tap. Thats all i wanted to know haha sorry about the taboo thread

Interestingly, if it's registering as a double touch, it should really work with all programs, shouldn't it...?
As others have said it's just double tap. If you hold your finger in one spot then tap another spot on the screen it will register as a double tap where your finger is held. It is no different than double tapping the same spot with one finger

this is what i found on support page:
The following devices support touchscreen gestures in Google Maps for Android version 5.0. Due to hardware limitations, certain Android devices may not fully support every gesture available.
Fully-supported devices:
The following devices support panning, zooming, tilting, and rotating gestures.
» Samsung Nexus S
» Samsung Galaxy S
» Motorola Droid
» Motorola Droid 2
» Motorola Droid X
» HTC Incredible
» HTC EVO 4G
» HTC G2
Partially-supported devices:
The following devices support panning, zooming, and tilting gestures only.
» HTC Desire
» Sony Ericsson X10
» LG Ally
» HTC Nexus One
Note:
» Rotating gestures require Android OS 2.2 or later.
» This list of devices may be incomplete and may change in the future as new Android phones are available for purchase.

Here it is
Although it does show buildings in 3D at a certain angle, I can confirm that the gestures do not work on Wildfire.
Thanks guys. I feared for it.
Rotating will work after the Android 2.2 update.
=O
I'm just waiting for Jacob to install 2.3
But after that, I guess for the 2.2 this weekend.
I'm on froyo (from MoDaCo) and i don't see lots of changes. I even don't have the option bar on the top of the screen. no auto-rotate, well no rotate at all. :'(
I bet it won't run that smooth anyway. So why bother?
im searching the google maps in the market all day and i cant find it . i searched in the appbrain application and found it but because i had updated previously there is no download button anymore , instead there is a market button where redirects me to the market to download the app, but when ii do that with google maps it says that cannot find it !!!!
If you can't find an app in the Market, chances are it's not available in your country. You can use apps to fook the Market to think it's running on a specific operator. I use MarketEnabler and set it to AT&T or SFR or whatever. Works wonders!
As for Maps, I upgraded and see no new features indeed. I did not expect 3D on the little Wildfire, but having at least auto rotate would have been cool.
I'm new BTW, so Hi!

3D Works, Pull down with 2 fingers.
Rotating gestures will work after the 2.2 update.
Doesn't work for me. Could be that my location is not supported, though. As for rotating, I am on 2.2 (Modaco ROM) but no luck.

hi i had searched the forums and youtube and i have not found any video of the xoom original livewallpaper, can someone take a video of the live wallpaper in action? the one that come preinstalled in the xoom?
it only comes with four installed. Maps, which lets you set up a map as your background (you can imagine that) holo spiral, equalizer simple, and spectrum..... none of these are new so I'm sure you can find them in some corner of the web.
They're the same as any other android device.. accept bigger. I'd video for you, but don't have the tools.
I'm currently using star field, and it it working awesome with no lag and no battery hit.

Is there anyway to enable 360 rotation for all apps? Some apps do it, others dont.
The OS itself allows this, but Google Earth for example doesn't.
Can we enable this somehow? Its a bit of a pain since the Asus Case allows you to place it in an upside down orientation so its easy to type, but half the apps don't work in this rotation...

+1 here too....
i hate how some apps will force themselves into portrait mode. The Engadget app for example. Main page is Portrait.......the article is landscape.
I wonder if this is a case of repacking the apk's or if we can force the system into making the apps think that portrait is actually landscape?

If we do that then we will get an annoying 4:3 ratio pic......
What are everyone's favourite apps to use on the EPD? Or just apps that look good on there and / or generally nice uses for it?
For example, other than the reading apps, I really like MD whatsapp and GO (chinese board game)

Hi
I just wonder how did you know that an app like Appy Geek has a dedicated widget for YotaPanel, something I couldn't find in any other apps.
Cheers.
Might not be a dedicated widget, but appy geek has a widget that can be applied to yotapanels.
I've found using maps on the EPD is great, especially if it's too bright outside to see the front screen, with the display always being on you can keep glancing at the screen without having to unlock it and easily follow the little dot as you head to your destination. I use google maps and Maps.Me with the latter looking much better on the EPD (plus it doesn't suffer google maps annoying quirk of the little direction arrow pointing backwards to the direction of travel on the mirrored map)

I like it as you can download maps as you need them, you can then wander rounds foreign places and network back spots with no data required

A couple of emulators work really well on the EPD.
PHEM: Palm Hardware Emulator runs great, and since all the old Palm apps were designed for greyscale devices anyway, they work fine. I've freaked a few people out when I show them I have Android running on one side of my phone, and Palm on the other side.
Similarly, GBC.emu from Robert Broglia runs great, and the old Gameboy games are at home on the display.
In both cases, the minor screen update delays and artifacting actually seem to add to the experience, since these old systems had displays that were sluggish anyway.
Thanks for the pointer to GBC.emu - I installed it after reading your post and have been enjoying some old school Gameboy play that takes me back to when I first got it all that time ago (nearly 25 years....geeezzzz...that makes me feel old!).
Have been really enjoying QuizUp recently and it's brilliant on the back. The EPD allows for ages of gameplay with hardly any drain
This appeared on Twitter today, it is apparently "yotafit" but there is nothing in the app store of that name or even on a Google search, anyone know about this? I'd like it!
Edit....The reply to my question on twitter about the app....."It is a new app called Yota fit that will be included in the next software update (lollipop)"
Sent from my YD201 using XDA Free mobile app
That's good to know - thanks. I saw that on twitter this morning and it reminded me first of all of the Google Fit app in look but I could not replicate the screen. Good to hear that it is real and not just vapourware!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3Y1rHUSah0
new apps coming along with lollipop update, yotafit and seems like a fair few others
I wish i spoke Russian!
There's some amazing looking new stuff coming for the EPD and lollipop too, can't wait!

Fbreader now has support for yota devices and the pdf plugin makes reading pdfs on rear screen a joy
Are there any WhatsApp designed for epd
Disa is pretty good on the EPD, also by it combining all the messaging you can have all of them on the back in 1 app, the interface is also well suited to the back.

Please explain how you've managed to work out PDFs? So far Fbreader works great with file formats like: docx, txt or epub but I failed to find the way to display PDFs on the backscreen - even with that plugin... For PDFs the icon that should send the display on the backscreen ('cueved arrow') is replaced by "Network Library". Do you experienced the same?
To be honest I failed to display and scroll PDFs on the Yotaphone backscreen so far If you know the way - please help and explain.
Really enjoying the yotanotes app and having a notification list on the EPD at the moment.
the Kindle app works for pdfs, as does wps office.
