[Q] Restore to Stock Recovery - Epic 4G General

I installed OneClick Root + Clockworkmod Recovery on a coworkers phone (actually, 3 coworker, plus myself). One of them has the official Sprint HotSpot ($30 per month), and when I installed Wireless Tether for Root, she said it crawled in comparison (apparently she had two laptops, two other phones, and an iTouch connected to the Sprint Hotspot and two of them were watching video... on 3G...impressive.
So, now I've removed Wireless Tether for Root and she's going to return to the $30 per month service. However, when any device is connected to the Sprint Hotspot app, they won't connect to the internet. I imagine this has something to do with root, so I'd like to restore back to stock recovery (and that way Sprint can fix the problem instead of me trying to deal with it).
So the question is..... is there any way to flash back to stock recovery / no root, WITHOUT clearing out all of her data, apps, etc?
Thanks!

You can use odin to flash back to stock DI18 with no root.

If you are on stock rom why dont u use mobile ap? Its just as fast as sprint mobile hotspot and works on 1x/3g/4g all quickly. I agree wireless tether does crawl. Thats why im on mobile ap and stock rom til the mobile ap gets working on Froyo Deodexed roms.
Look in my signature for mobile ap link. I love it im able to stream netflix on my ipod touch with it and browse on my computer and phone all at the same time and still blazing on all speeds.

I've not used Oden before, I've seen the term but not actually sure what it is?? All of our phones are running the last leak of Froyo (the one that was supposedly official, then turned out to be a leak).
If I go the Odin route, will it clear out all of her data and apps?

I'll check that out. Is it an actual hotspot instead of Ad-Hoc mode?

Yes using Odin will make it like it was a brand new phone. It removes everything. Root, clockwork, apps, data. The only thing it doesn't touch is the sd card

Alright, is there any way to get it back to Stock Recovery without wiping the whole phone back to factory

Anybody know?

As far as I know there is no uninstaller for clockwork. The only way I know is Odin but it wipes everything. I think that might be your only option but I might be wrong. I haven't seen any other way to uninstall clockwork. You can run a root uninstaller but that won't get rid of clockwork.

This thread has an option for uninstalling clockwork recovery. Haven't tried it myself.

You should be able to restore stock recovery by making a tar file containing just recovery.bin from SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 and flashing that with Odin.
You can definitely restore stock recovery by extracting recovery.bin, putting it on your sdcard, grabbing a copy of "redbend_ua" (i.e., from the one click zip) and doing the following with adb:
Code:
adb push redbend_ua /data/local/tmp
adb shell
su # Press "Allow" at the on-screen prompt.
/data/local/tmp/redbend_ua restore /sdcard/recovery.bin /dev/block/bml8
But this won't fix your problem. "Rooting" likely didn't cause the problem either, especially if all you did was install wireless-tether afterwards.
Did you try power-cycling the phone since using wireless-tether and trying the Sprint hotspot app again?

Wtf samsung?

I'm having nothing but problems with this update. Feels like samsung just took dk28 and renamed it eb13. I went back to di18 from dk28 so that my phone can work properly thinking that eb13 would be worth the wait but nooooooooo now I'm back to frustration I felt using dk28. Damn samsung did y'all even try to test this or did y'all just rename and called it official?

I installed EB13 using the windows installer, which totally wipes the phone and I'm having none of those problems. Not knowing how you installed the update it's hard to know what happened but perhaps clearing the caches would help.
i used odin which does a full wipe and im having no issues. im loving this
I updated using the .exe file on the Samsung site and I'm not having any of the issues you listed. And after wiping my memory card it would appear my issues with my media files are gone as well...
Sounds like you should wipe, reinstall and see what happens.

Basically the full Sammy installer through a PC *sounds* like it will do it. But the recovery boot menu also has an option for clearing the cache and I wonder if that is good to do also before that, just to be thorough.

I think that's true about the full wipe method. The update.zip method assumes that you've got a fully stock phone that you haven't messed around with. That assumption doesn't work all that well with the types who visit xda.
On the plus side, I was using a DK28 rom (quantum) and did a backup in clockwork. After I did the "full wipe" (.exe) method and then did the old 1-click to get root and clockwork back, I was able to go to "advanced" restore in clockword and restore just my data. It worked absolutely perfectly.
Please...please. I beg of you haha. Explain howexactly I would wipe my phone so that I would be able to get te update. I was fooling around and deleted the nascar app and because of this I'm not able to dowload it without and error messege.

sleven, you really should do some reading on the forums and you could easily figure it out: [GUIDE] How To Update Your Samsung Epic 4G to Official "EB13" Android 2.2.1 in the Epic 4G Android Development forum is a pretty damn good place to start. I'd use the Last Resort (Easiest) method if I were you, since you don't seem to be big on figuring things out. CAUTION!!! All three methods listed here will reset your phone to stock, though they will leave your SD card and it's contents alone.
If you want to "upgrade" rather than do a clean install so that you can save your settings & programs, follow this guide:
Download the update.zip file from http://www.multiupload.com/K1MHLS6SNX
Boot into recovery by
Power off your phone
Hold [Volume Down] + [Camera] + [Power] until you're in recovery
Clear cache 3x
Apply update.zip

Droid, from what I understand the "full Sammy installer" completely reformats the partitions and installs a fresh copy of EB13 on Epics. However, I know there's a number of people who recommend booting into recovery (stock or CWM) and clearing the caches 3x in a row. I haven't always done that, but it does seem to clear up a lot of issues that people are having, especially if they flash with Odin / Heimdall.

sleven, I guess I'm taking pity on you, cuz here's a guide to fix your little problem. Be advised, you'll need to have root privileges and a file manager that can navigate root, such as Root Explorer. If you need help getting rooted, see One Click Root & Recovery for the Epic 4G! v2.5.5 Now has ClockworkMod Redirector!
In the Wiki, check out All *.apks & Framework / Apps safe to remove
Download the Epic System Apps.rar file from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=20HJ9004
Unrar it with 7zip, Winrar, Winzip, etc.
Find the Nascar app you deleted and copy it to /system/app
As long as your /system/app folder is identical to the Epic System Apps folder from the .rar (it's ripped straight from a phone), you should be good to follow the guide I gave you in my previous post. Good luck!
Credit where credit is due: obviously I linked to many other people's guides, wikis, etc. Thanks a lot, cuz that's how I learned to do all this!
I didn't wipe and I have no problems at all. All I did was install and run gps status and now I get instant lock even in my house. It think it is going to take awhile for everyone to get use to the setting.

With some people around here you might need to clarify that you mean to wipe the phone, not wipe with the phone....
Everything has been better than 2.1 for me (GPS, browser, etc), except bluetooth. Bluetooth still can't connect in my car.
If bluetooth would work, this ROM would be perfect.

at first my GPS seemed to be much faster and more accurate (locked into 2 meters!) but now this morning I can't seem to get a lock at all...wtf???
I used samsungs pc installer by the way. Maybe I'll try using Odin instead today...
other than that, which is a huge other, the ROM is running great. I did have to root and run the manual sensor calibration utility though to fix the screen lag
edit: Just did a battery-pull reboot and all seems to be well in epic FROYO land.

Help! Can't connect to any network!

So, I've finally got around to putting a SIM card in my phone... and I can't connect to the network. I see 3-4 white bars (which turn green when wifi is on) and I get a list of operators, but when I try to connect to the one the SIM is for, i get the toast "unable to connect to this network at this time. please try again later".
i have performed a manual 3.2.4 upgrade, but that shouldn't prevent me from connecting, right? I'm not sure which upgrade I used, (for the 9020) but it seemed to upgrade fine!
Should I downgrade to 3.2.3 and wait for an OTA upgrade or what?
all stock, not rooted.
mhh, can't downgrade to 2.3.3 as it causes an error.
how do i put the full android rom on it without rooting?

Use Odin its posted in thread in Dev section probably on page 2
and includes odin & 2.3.1 rom
If u don't know how to use Odin then extract the rom and flash system image threw fastboot
Or if u have clockwork recovery intalled there is a 2.3.3 rom that can be flashed threw clockwork

tempting, but you need to root to do this right? i only want stock roms on here, and not to mess with stuff like that.
no you dont need root and it is stock rom
here is stock 2.3.3 only if you have 9020t phone
flash threw clockwork
2.3.3 OTA package
again if your phone is not 9020t dont flash

Root/hotspot - hear me out

I'm headed out of town for a work conference, and I am taking my Epic and Xoom wi-fi with me. I've got a completely stock EC05 build that I would like to use as a wi-fi hotspot for my Xoom while I am out/about.
What do people recommend as the best method to root my phone and leave it as untouched as possible (IE reversible so that 2.3 OTA update can be had when it comes out)? I would really like to NOT have to totally flash/wipe my phone to achieve this, but admittedly I haven't gotten too far in researching because every method I've seen involves wiping the phone and installing some custom rom from scratch when I'm perfectly happy with the base/pre-fab interface from Sprint.
IS there even a way to get root without losing the existing data on my phone?
Odin cwm 3.1.0.1, and flash the genocide kernel. Yes, when you update you will lose root, but everything else should be intact (data/apps/contact)

He's not flashing gingerbread. He wants to stay on froyo. For easy root u could use odin to flash clockwork mod 3.1.0.1 and then flash the su.zip in recovery. Or you could run the one click root with clockwork mod 3.1.0.1. A third option if u just want root with no custom recovery u could try an app called gingerbreak. That will give u root without a custom recovery. All 3 of these will not wipe your phone.

Ok cool. Just didn't want him to end up in a bind. Lots of ways to gets stuck. It's not foolproof and you may end up having to wipe in the end. I say root and stick with it.

This worked like a champ - got nervous at first because it just sat there staring at me and it took me a minute to read ALL the text on the screen where it says to reboot the phone and try again if it did that. Second attempt went flawless and so now I am assuming I have CWM on my phone.
Now what? CWM just enables the ability to grab root and is not root itself, correct? Should I grab a hot-spot app now (which one is recommended? the links provided by blu9987 go to a distro directory with various flavors) from the market place? Do I still need to install some root app like Super User?
-edit-
A quick market search turned up this: https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether
The only requirements are a rooted phone and a netfilter enabled kernel - which I imagine it is.. 2.6 linux kernels usually have it as part of their default module set, but that's for desktop linux - not sure about my phone.
You can use that, or a newer beta version which you won't find on the market, or use open garden.
I am trying it out because of the large number of votes and high rating. My only issue now is that it says tethering is up and running but I can't see it.
Trying to figure out how to enable ad-hoc mode instead of infrastructure and see if that makes the difference.
Is there a non-adhoc wifi hotspot app, by chance? Looks like if I want to use ad-hoc I will have to root my xoom, too.
Trying to find methods to do that which will preserve my xoom data too but if there's an infrastructure mode hotspot app I will happily use that instead.
-edit-
Now I see what blu's link was referring to. In digging around online I came back to it and it's more clear now what it is and which to use. Here's hoping it works for my epic and not just for the EVO.

If you're talking about wifi tether it should work on the epic (atleast it did on eclair). In the version 3 in settings you can select "Samsung Epic" from the device menu too.
Run the one-click which will give you root and then download wifi tether from the market
Jeez you guys are making this seem so complicated. Wtf does he need odin for? All he wants is root and hotspot. He doesn't even need a new kernel.

[Q] Manual update to 2.2?

Does anyone know how I could manually update my Continuum via USB? I currently do not have phone service due to financial difficulties. I have Wi-Fi everywhere I go and use the Pinger Text Free app to text for free. I really want to update to 2.2 to get the Google Play Music app, but it appears you can't update OTA over WI-FI or over the network without a data plan. I recall on my Nexus One that I could download the file and just sort of flash it on the phone. If not, does anyone have a link to an easy way to root the Continuum and put 2.2 on it? I'm not too advanced, I sort of bricked the Nexus trying to root it and had to have a friend bail me out. Appreciation in advance

Flash your phone to stock DL17 via Odin if you are not currently on stock DL17. From there, download the update.zip files for EB01 and EC09. After you flash to stock DL17, boot up your phone, and transfer the EB01 update to the SDCard. Restart the phone into recovery, and flash update.zip. This will bring you up to EB01. From there, transfer the EC09 update.zip file to the SDCard, flash in recovery, and you'll be on EC09. As an FYI, flashing back to stock DL17 will wipe all of your data.

Safestrap will allow you to clear cache & dalvik without wiping data or messing with your stock system. You can always uninstall via the app you use to install Safestrap. You can get it and instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610.
To clear your cache/dalvik only, in Safestrap go to Wipe > Advanced > Select Cache & Dalvik Cache > Swipe > Reboot. Your phone should show Android upgrading apps message upon boot and then you're done.
If this doesn't work you could try flashing a modem via odin as asrah suggested, but I would be doubtful that would fix anything as it sounds like a system file issue not firmware. The modems ccan be found in the following post.
If this doesn't fix your wifi you may need to wipe your system and reflash your stock rom. You have a couple of options:
Start fresh via odin and reroot. Stock files here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524572.
Or
Flash a stock, prerooted NC4 rom. Instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627.
The latter would be the quickest route if you still have Safestrap installed.
If you have any questions just ask.

That ROM/Firmware/Kernel (some part of one or more of the three) have been responsible for two SIM locks. I highly doubt Beans is to blame. Hes a great dev. However, sometimes issues arise that are no ones fault. Just weigh your decision to flash that stuff against any need for prepaid carriers.
