Yea, let us know if it stops working. In my experience, you'll get a text from tmobile forcing you to upgrade your data plan, but there is a possibility that your fine, since Nexus S isn't sold *directly* by tmobile. If you payed full price (unsubsidized), then you have nothing to worry about, they can't change your data price.
I am using internet2.voicestrem.com working

Its basically a $5/month data plan that only works with certain phones and you have to be grandfathered into it (ie, you cant sign up for it.. Its something you had to have had since 2000 or whenever tzones was popular and never cancelled). Since you are asking, you probably don’t have it and will not be able to get it

Not true; it's just the data plan for dumbphones.
The T-Mobile website automatically recognizes phones and makes you sign up for full ~$30~ data plans if you have a smartphone.
Of course, if you own a phone that T-Mobile doesn't sell directly, the website can't recognize the phone (so you're free to "select" a dumbphone).
And some of these phones that T-Mobile can't recognize are... The Nexus One and the Nexus S
I have tzone 599 plan too, I have notice that it works fine as long as I am on Tmo 3G coverage, as soon the phone goes to Edge. My data stops working.
Has any one else experience it?
Any way to solve this problem?
Thanks

NOT TRUE. it is the data plan for phones back from 2000 till they cancelled it around 2005. It will work on ANY dumb or SMART phone and it will work for tmobile smartphones as well, such as my vibrant and hd7. Tmobile MAY send a text message saying that you have a smartphone and they want you to upgrade to a "smartphone" plan but you do not have to. I personally have never gotten any texts or received anything like that from tmobile when I used an iphone, iphone 4, hd7, hd2, or vibrant. Only a few people have announced that tmobile pressured them into upgrading but it voids the contract and you can almost always talk your way out of them forcing you to upgrade your data plan.
The only exception is if you choose to upgrade your line, you will have to sign up for a "smartphone" data plan to go along with your 2 year service extension.
But the truth is, tzones will work with any phone regardless of its "smartness."

I had this exact same thing happen to me today. I figured TMO was forcing me into a more expensive data plan, but as soon as I was back to 3G it was working fine again. I don't have the $5.99 plan, just the $10/mo for dumbphones.
This may end up forcing me into a legit data plan in the end. I like having access to data, even @ edge speeds.

My problem is that it works great when i am on 3g, only it happens if it goes on EDGE for even few mins, it stops, then I have to reset it and see if it goes on 3G.
Ohh boy, I wish there was some sort of a hack ...
I really don't wanna go to higher data plan at this time of the economy :

Hi,
I'm still using a grandfathered plan that contains unlimited data for $5.99. If I were to use my sim card in the Nexus, would I be able to have 3G? I have acquired a new sim card last year if that helps.
Thanks
Seems to be working fine in an unlocked phone.
I had a friend who was using an unlocked AT&T Tilt on T-Mobile's network. He recently bought a MT3G and it wouldn't let him sign in to his google account. He called T-Mobile and they told him he needed the Android plan to activate it. So he added that and it started working. I would keep your plan and try it, but don't buy the phone and expect that you will be able to keep it.

Do you have the $5.99 data plan on the N1? I'm not worried that it will work, just wondering if I will get 3G and not just EDGE. I'm using my $5.99 plan on the iPhone but getting EDGE due to frequency but I was wondering if T-Mobile can cap or restrict me to EDGE speed only due to my plan.
I am currently waiting on my N1 to show up; but I do know my G1, when I switched to it from my wing, didn't get any internet whatsoever until I had them update my plan to the 'android unlimited web'. And when I switched my plan from the 350 min myfavs to the 500 even more plus, I had to get them to tack on the same thing but in it's free version before I got 'net again. My friend has the $5.99 internet on his unlocked iphone. If I see him this weekend before you get an answer, I'll have him put his sim card in my N1 and see what happens.
Those of us who had the Ion, which was a developer phone and had no T-mobile branding, kept the 5.99 plan for a little while but the party eventually ended when the MyTouch was released. I would guess the same will happen with the N1... it'll work for a while, but then they'll prompt you to upgrade.
My G1 worked for a while with the old unlimited plan, but suddenly one day it stopped working, and all sites redirected me to a page saying I needed to upgrade my data plan. Just FYI.
Is this the same as the 5.99 T-zones plan thing that I have had my Dash rigged up to for the longest time? I didnt think anyone still has this plan but I get my phone tomorrow and I still have this plan though I think I am going to just go straight to 3g since I am going back to Phoenix in a week and I think their new network has rolled out there.
Would be interesting to get cheap internet though...

Years ago, there was a 5.99 internet plan. Trust me, I have it... data has just gotten progressively more and more expensive over the years, it started at 5.99, then went to 10 then 20 now 25...
Luckily, I have been using the dash all this time, not the 3g dash, the oldschool one.... and ive had fully functional internet with it since my 5.99 internet plan has been grandfathered over the years...

Well actually way back then t-mobile had T-zone for only $2.99 and then they bumped it up to $5.99, and so on.
But after reading this thread. It appears to me that T-Mobile only finds out and block you from the $5.99 internet plan if your using a Google Phone. Because I have the TP2 from T-mobile, and my 3G internet is working fine. I have the $5.99 internet plan as well. This is very interesting.. Helps me decide between the HD2 and the Nexus 1... When I bought my unsubsidzed G1 about 10 months ago I had to call Tmo and have them change my existing data plan for the G1. Now that I bought an unsubsidized N1, I'm wondering if I need to do the same thing. Do I need to call Tmo and notify them that I am switching to an N1 so that they can update my data plan for the correct phone?
I'm wondering this myself. My friend renewed his account, and I bought the nexus one off of him for 300 + traded my newer G1 for his older beat up G1.
I should be receiving it tomorrow. I'm gonna stick my sim card in and see what happens.
I had a G1, and when my Nexus arrived I just popped in the sim card and everything was good to go. Data, sms/mms, and calling all work perfectly. I received mine on the 7th and haven't had any probs with that so far.
Had a G1 as well and didn't tell them anything.
When I went from my TMO Wing after getting my G1 I needed to contact them because they needed to provision the account for the G1 data plan (and vice versa when my G1 failed and needed the TMO Wing as spare til replacement). I was told by TMO Customer Care that the provisioning for the N1 was the same as for the G1.

I actually switched from the G1 planeuth myfavs to the $59,- plan. Saving me $20 a month.
No need to tell them anything, if you already have the data plan.
i've had a blackberry data account for years, switched to iphone without telling them and it worked, now i switched to the nexus one without telling them and it still works. maybe it was different with the previous android phones because they had direct control over them.
The data plan is an android data plan.. not only g1
My blackberry plan worked for a day on the MT3G and then I had to change to the android plan.
u dont have to tell em anything
Data plans are data plans. They just charge you more when you have a smartphone.
Having just gone through this, if you have the G1 data plan, you'll want them to switch it to the Android one. The cost is the same, and the only difference I've seen between the two is that the Android one has the Visual Voicemail, the G1 plan does not. I called up to get visual voicemail activated, took about 5 minutes, no real change to the account other than that data plan change.

Quite painless. But if you're on an existing "G1" plan, N1 will work fine on it. Just not Visual Voicemail... If you have Visual Voicemail working on your G1, you're probably already on the "Android" plan.
Cheers,
Kermee
remember to turn off wifi while setting up vvm for the first time on the n1...otherwise you will not connect to the tmo server...
No don't call T-mobile, they are anxious to get folks off the old G1 plan that has data and 400 text messaging. If you get swapped off this plan It will be at your own peril, you will have to pay $10 more for unlimited txt as they have no other plans also some of their newer plans require an activation fee, oh and once you switch you can't go back. Your phone should work just fine.

Yeah, if you're on this data plan/sms combo, you should stick with it. You all should be using Google Voice for vvm anyway... it's way more useful than T-mobile's app.
As a t-mobile employee I can say it's still best to call them simply to update your IMEI number, it's useful to do so as if you do have to call in for insurance, it's much easier. If there are any problems with the data, sometimes the IMEI is the issue.. so it's easier just to clear that up to start.
You don't have to change the plan to do that, you simply tell them you need to update your IMEI and you're fine.
Sometimes asurion reps will conference with T-mobile to verify the device on the account is the one you said.. so unless you want to replace the N1 with an older G1, making sure everything's up to date is your best bet =)
As far as the plans are concerned, not much diff aside from the VV, they're both android so it doesn't matter much. If you were previously on a blackberry plan however you could have some issues arise over time.
Hope I helped. ^_^
T-mobile and asurion will not replace an N1, as far as I know, because Tmo doesn't sell it.
I wouldn't tell them anything unless you put the sim in and things do not work. I'm using a $5 data plan that has been working for almost a week now.
If you talk to them, they WILL switch you to a more expensive plan. You WILL be screwed. Prices for Tmo CONSISTENTLY go up, and there is no reason to tell them anything unless it doesn't work.
I two texts from AT&T telling me they upgraded my data plan "as a courtesy" as was previously reported on by Engadget. I have been swapping out my SIM card and placing it in my old K790a and changing the data plan back to the $10 per month one. However AT&T keeps changing it back a day or two later.
What I'm interested to find out is if I make the switch just before the billing cycle ends, and it sticks through to the next one, will I be charged 10 bucks or not.
you should switch to tmobile they are cheaper and they dont change your plan on you.

Yup. I hate you too.
Now, I know there are lots of threads on this already and I took a few minutes skimming search results and didn't find this answered.
Basically, I was hoping to switch myself to the $10 internet plan on T-Mobile rather than paying the $25 internet plan. I bought my phone unlocked from Google.com and not subsidized through T-Mobile. However, when I asked to switch to the other plan, they asked me for my IMEI number on my phone.
Has anyone else been asked for their IMEI when switching to a different data plan? Do they actually have a database of the existing N1 IMEI numbers or are they simply trying to build one? Would I be better off grabbing an old Razr and giving them that IMEI then switching back to my N1?
Lots of questions! Haha.
Anyway, if anyone could shed a bit of light on this I would very much appreciate it.
No, a few months after the initial G1 release T-Mobile caught on to the "scam" and closed the loophole. You have to have an Android data plan now or nothing.

Hmm.. I was under the impression that this was solely for subsidized phones which they already had IMEI's for.
So, in the end, you're stuck paying the extra cost for the Android version of Web even if you bought it unlocked then huh?

Pretty much--don't know what to tell you I bought the phone outright since I didn't want to kill my plan to be forced on the N1 T-Mobile individual plan for at least 4 months...and I was forced to go onto the $25/mos plan from my $20/mos BlackBerry plan.
EDIT: They didn't ask me for what my IMEI number was though. In T-Mobile's system it will probably say I still use a BlackBerry device
The IMEI numbers update automatically in the system on a 2 day lag. So whatever phone you use today will reflect in their system on Saturday. As far as the $10 data plan, it will not work. It should say something to the effect that "you don't have the proper provisioning" or something like that. Basically your eating up too much bandwidth. You obviously had enough money to buy a Nexus 1, but won't pay for the premium data plan? That's the same thing as buying a brand new Ferrari and asking your friends for gas money to go out? At least I see it that way

From what I have been able to find out, if you had the old $6 T-Zones, you were able to be grandfathered in when they cancelled the service. The cheapest net they offer now is the "Phone First/Web2Go" internet which is $10 a month. Essentially the same thing just 4$ more.

Basically your eating up too much bandwidth. You obviously had enough money to buy a Nexus 1, but won't pay for the premium data plan? That's the same thing as buying a brand new Ferrari and asking your friends for gas money to go out? At least I see it that way

Good analogy. However, people don't get rich by spending money. If you can find a way to pay less, you do it. Some people made a financial stretch to afford the N1 and now cannot afford to pay for a premium data service.
Data service is data service and should not be dependent on device. At least I see it that way.
Hey, I'm all fur finding ways to pay as little as possible.
But let's not pretend an extra $15 is breaking the bank.
Hello, I just cancelled my cable TV after realising u rarely watch the 200 channels available.
And all the network channels i can get using a $15 pair if rabbit ears.
HD, .5.1
Next to go is the phone. Experimenting with magic jack this month.
All I want to pay for is high speed internet.
I'll save at least $120 a month
I think the grandfathering is BS because when I first got my G1 I had T-Zones on my old v3 and they made me switch to the newer data plan. To clarify, they had to do it because of activating the phone, so I don't know if you just buy it outright and don't tell them it could work.

@Carbon: did you give them your Nexus's IMEI number or a different phones? Also, did you buy yours unlocked or subsidized?

I got my phone unlocked. I didnt give them my IMEI, they automatically know it once your sim card is in the phone. Ive had the 5.99 tzones plan for a while now, but this article should help you out http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/5381...ed-data-for-5-99-works-wiphone-and-nexus-one/
edit: this comment by a user might also be helpful.
"as an alternative, i was able to set this up without customer service's help. this was more than a year ago when I setup tzones to work on my treo 650. the trick was that i had an old phone sony ericcson t300 that i had purchased back in 2000 or 2001. I keep it around because if i have an emergency where my phone or my wife's phone stops working i can transfer the sim card quickly to a working phone to make/receive a call. So here's what i did:
setup my sim card in the t300.
make a call or send a text message; long enough to let the t-mobile servers detect that I have switched phones.
log in to t-mobile.com
verify that my phone is now detected as a t300. if not, click on the "not my phone" and change it.
next, adjust service plans, t-zones appears on the list.
add tzones to your billing cycle. make any additional changes you need to make.
save the settings.
change your sim card back to the original phone.
setup the phone for t-zones service"
T-mobile has two data plans.
1) Data plan
2) Sidekick data plan
They have a ton of different pricing for number 1) , the $10 smart web, the $15 dollar smartphone plan, and the $25 android plan.
(I'm not even including all the grandfathered plans like t-zone/t-mobile shadow/blackberry,etc)
The point being they are all the same, they use the same servers, they are all unlimited, so If you can manage to get any of those plans on your bill you will have full 3g/HSPA speed internet on your phone, regardless of what phone it is.
i asked this in a thread a while back, but it got passed up.
if you purchased and activated an evo off contract, what was there to gain? it seems like it wouldn't be worth it for the evo, since everyone was supposed to upgrade their plan a mandatory simply everything data plan + premium data. before with other phones, i could see the allure, but now, not so much, unless you found a way to keep your old plan.
i suppose if you weren't due for an upgrade, you had no other option but to buy it that way. Then Sprint can change your plan without extending your contract.

that makes sense. it just seemed like alot of people got it in their heads that they would not be tied down to a contract no matter what, and it didn't seem to be worth it anymore.

Lol i laugh when customers tell me they arent due for an Upgrade. Ive upgraded 4 times this year. But yea there is NO way yo keep your old plan. The Evo is only compatible with the Everything Data Plan and the Simply Everything Plan. No exceptions. Ive tryed everything to get around it. I had to leave me Sero Plan to get the evo
i'm on the everything data plus plan (long story) but that was about all i could do.
I got mine off contract, and the only thing that changed in my plan was adding the additonal $10 fee, which did not affect my contract expiration date (which is still October 1st).
I bought mine from best buy for the $200 dollar two year contract. My old contract expired earlier this year. Now, somehow my account shows that my contract expired 2 1/2 years ago. Not that I'm complaining, but anyone know how that could have happened? I double checked with the upgrade checker on best buys website, it shows the same thing.

expiration dates don't change if you are not receiving anything (subsidized phone on the same line, 75/150 off your bill.)
i should have wrote "mandatory". it looks like you lucked out. what plan do you have?

How did I luck out? I didn't renew my contract because I bought it off contract. Anyone else could do the same thing. No one forces you to use an upgrade.
with google voice account... seems like sprint could turn your phone off and you could still have a phone...lol
I buy all my phones outright. I would have bought my Evo if I didn't get one free from Google. Only phone I ever got on-contract was my 1st gen iPhone. At this point I go through 2 phones a year so off contract is way cheaper for me.

i thought everyone had to change their plan to one of the new ones regardless if they activated an evo on their account. if my last statement is correct (barring rulebending/sweetalking/retentions/ etc. or the oct. 1st sero rumor), then you are lucky to have your same plan (+$10).

i used to get mine off contract, but with having to get the new plan, i just didn't see a reason. once again, your situation is somewhat different than the norm since you got the i/o phone, and since you switch phones so often, it would make sense as your phones retain most of their resale value. i guess my question goes out more to the people who are eligible for a full upgrade.
thanks for the replies
The additional $10 fee doesn't change or extend your plan. It just adds $10/month, the same way insurance adds $7/month.

True, with OTHER PHONES. If you (or anyone else) were able to get by without having to change plans, cool, they just didn't write the terms that way for THIS PHONE.
"If you’re already a Sprint customer but have a different plan, you’ll have to change plans when you activate your device. Also, once you change your plan, you will not be able to change back to your old plan if we no longer sell it, even if you go back to your old phone."
Nothing in their verbage says you have to extend your contract of enter one if you pay full price or get it from another party, but the terms for the evo state that if you use the phone on sprint, you have to change your plan. will people be able to get away without having to? of course, but I already mentioned that in my last post.

I thought Sprint was not selling them off-contract?

I'm pretty sure that is for people on those ancient SERO plans that give them unlimited data for like $40. I already had an unlimited everything plan, so I just needed the $10 fee.

I am pretty sure that would only work where you have a WiFi signal, and you may be limited to no MMS, since MMS can't be sent/received over WiFI.
NOW, If you were to let sprint turn you off, and start an account with CLEAR for their WiFi and used your Google Voice number, I THINK you would have phone and Data Anywhere there is a Clear signal....

I'm confused...how did you get 4 upgrades in a year? I would love 4 upgrades a year. I could get another evo or epic for someone else on my plan.

He's apparently an employee. Just do what I do: Keep your phone in very good condition and sell it when you get another one. I sold my ancient Hero for $300 when the EVO came out, which is more than the rebates.

thanks captain obvious.... i didnt write that cuz its an understood, right? besides, wifi is just about everywhere. meh @ MMS when you have email accounts. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice and venture other avenues to do what you like
