Odd Question about DJ05 process. - Fascinate General

I have a Fascinate that is currently not activated. I need the GPS function so I've been using my Incredible. The phone is rooted and I have used Odin to put the Clockwork Recovery on the phone.
For reasons only known to Verizon my ability to change and activate phones online is crippled by an pending order (2 months ago) that they cannot clear so I'd like to call them once after finishing and have a working (hopefully) GPS Fascinate.
Can I install the DJ05 modem and use Rom Manager to install the kernel and the ROM without activating the phone. For some reason I'm thinking RomManger wants a data connection.
thanks

As long as you have some sort of data connection (wifi should work just fine) to download the files, you should be fine

Yea I agree you just need a data connection to download the files and you should be good to go
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App

You could also download the files on your computer, transfer them to your sdcard, and then just use ROM Manager to reboot to recovery to flash the necessary file(s). I believe pretty much everything is now in the development forum.

Thanks
All seems to have worked well. Verizon is still working on restoring my ability to activate phones. A quick test of the GPS (non-activated) doesn't show any improvement. I'm hoping that's due to AGPS not being available in the inactive state. I really liked the phone for the few days I ran it struggling to fix the GPS. Not knocking the Incredible tho as it's a good phone as well.

Wifi is flakey at some APs

I have installed and uninstalled a number of firmware/mod combinations on my xv6800 in hopes to get the GPS working. I don't believe that's going to happen (saddly, I feel like there's a conspiracy out there to trick peeps like me into spending weeks on this problem without any positive outcome) so I'm currently focusing on what DOES work with this device.
One thing that's flakey is the wifi. At home I'm running WEP128. It connects sometimes, others it will not. When it does not automatically connect but sees it, it asks for the key each time. What's the deal with that? Entering my long a$$ key each time has made me memorize it, but it's still a serious PITA. I don't have the same issue at most other places - still using WEP128. Doesn't appear to have any issues connecting to open APs. Does have issues connecting to a friend's AP, i that it doesn't even SEE it as available any more, after the initial 3-4 connects.
Thoughts on why this could be happening? Not having the GPS makes me very angry, but then to not have reliable wifi practially makes the device pointless, as I have another phone, my own PED and an actual good camera... and a laptop.
thanks for any helpful thoughts.

Chris,
I'm assuming from your post that the "XV" indicates you have a Verizon Phone? If so you might look at this link pertaining to GPS

I have the verizon Titan and just use mac filtering on my wireless router. The encryption slows it down to much for me and basically need the same encryption scheme on both sides to get it to work properly. I don't do anything that it needs to be encrypted and the mac filtering keeps the neighbors out as well.

Wow, of all the tuts and instructions I've tried and read, that one has never crossed my screen - and I have tried at least 4-5 different ones. The phone's already unlocked and has a custom rom on it. I didn't get an impression either way if this method will reset the device/settings/files/etc in it again. I guess I could try it out. Thanks.
I'm getting to the point of just wanting to pay someone to get teh GPS working on it.
The Wifi issue is just weird and flakey. No rhyme or reason I can see.

I think of doing that often... but well... I don't have a but. WEP is hackable, but feels secure enough , considering I have a bunch of secure APs in my neighborhood... some obscurity helps as well.
I know that sometimes if I restart my AP (linksys wrt54g) the xv6800 will just find it and connect on it's own.

There is absolutely no reason why gps should not work on your device. In fact in this forum we really don't even discuss it too much anymore because it's really just an understood thing to be working. If you are on verizon use the latest alltel radio 3.42.xx I can't remember exactly, load dcd's 3.2.6 or 3.3.4 and start from there. Wifi on these roms have power saving features make sure if you are using wifi that you have strength up to full. Also, all the moguls that I have had, DO NOT COUNT ON THEM AUTOMATICALLY FINDING ACCESS POINTS, simply go to start->settings->connections "view all available access points" and select the one you want to use. I have heard cases of gps having trouble locking if wifi is on so make sure the switch is off and vise versa. Do the verizon qpst and registry settings change. On verizon you should have a lock within 30 seconds everytime if you are within the continental US. Good luck and take your time.

I have 3.42.something new within the last two months. My first attempt was with the DCD. Nada.
As for finding available access points, at my friend's place, it just shows it listed as unavailable. At home, it will SEE it and even attempt to connect, but often fails, except for those random times when it will connect.

Hm... will it maintain the lock with the wifi turned back on afterward? The whole point is to be able to use gmaps with the GPS. I can install other s/w that has it's own maps as well, bypassing the need for the wifi, but for starters, getting GPS working first is important.
It's a verizon phone, but I don't have service turned on yet. I'm not going to switch my number over until I'm happy with how it's set up. I do not intend on using a data plan - too expensive, so wifi when in range and other gps s/w when I'm not will be used.
Thanks for the words of encouragement. I have taken some serious time with this. The nice thing is that I don't have to rush, so I've tried MANY different things from the forums and even the PPCgeeks IRC channel. If I practice any more patience, I'll be sleeping.

That phonenews article was VERY helpful in getting me started, but:
It is ancient. Those old roms have problem. Use the newest DCD roms and radios found here. (thanks DCD and everyone)
ALSO, on the GPS.
If you EVER, EVER, installed the new Verizon MR1 upgrade, the GPS is locked. No worky no more..... But, simply find the older Verizon rom, it can be found. Downgrade to it and run it. Then go straight to the DCD rom/radio.

I did try the MR1 upgrade based aGPS hack, but I then realized that aGPS only matters if you've got a working GPS at all. Anyway, I then downgraded again and started over from scratch. I got my phone in September and did my series of hacks/upgrades/unlocks over the course of two weeks or nightly tries and retries. It's nice to hear someone say it WILL work, but Murphy's Law is working overtime with me on this one.
It is my understanding that if you don't have internet access than gps will not just not work on mogul. The gps one chip I believe is strictly an AGPS chip and cannot lock without using agps. However I guess some people have done it and use it, although even if you get it to work the lock will take forever. The mogul really needs that emphemeris data from the north american gps servers to function correctly. I didn't realize these were your terms.

I've never seen it written anywhere that one would be required to have a data connection with the service provider to get a GPS lock. Seems ridiculous to me. If I wanted to pay for a data connection, then why the heck not just pay for the VZ Navigator access??
I've never seen aGPS as a requirement either. If all the tuts were about aGPS, I'd see that having that data connection was important. Boy, I sure could use a definitive on this. If I KNOW for fact that GPS just doesn't work without a data connection, I'd have to suck it up and get an external bluetooth GPS device if I care enough. I have believed however all along that the whole point was to access GPS hardware without incurring data charges.
thanks,
Chris

Also, not trying to undermind you, but why did you aquire the mogul if you weren't planning on using internet access? TOTALLY reasonable question.
I will use the phone when I have it set how I like it.
I got it so I could have a reasonably convenient way to freely check my email and surf when in wifi range without needing to lug my laptop around with me. I got a good price on it, much cheaper than an actual laptop.
Nice sized screen for when I want to actually watch a ripped movie or TV show and the option to install other software on a whim to have with me is just great. I got a ppc that can be a phone essentially. I'm not a phone person, too cheap to pay for a text plan, but wifi is key. The ability to open this phone up for GPS use was a major factor in picking it from lots of research before diving in.

Is Usb tethering still working in 2.1?

Hi
Just tried to use usb tethering for the 1st time since 2.1 update.
All still looks like its working but no internet access. Tried under Linux on the same pc that always worked under 1.5
Also tried it on xp although I have never used it on there before I got the same kind of symptoms. Itooks like its all working but no internet, no pings, no nslookup.
So..... can someone try it and let me know if its working for you.
I am on T-Mobile UK. Ota 2.1 update, non rooted, stock Rom.
Thanks
I have exactly the same problem. I have spoken to TMob UK support who have not yet managed to solve it.
I'm wondering if they've not set up the phone right in the 2.1 update.
Glad its not just me. I will report it tomorrow as well.
I have a mate with a desire on tmob - will do a side by side with him tomorrow (and confirm his is working) and see if it is just settings - although it feels like a deeper problem to me.
I'll post findings.
Same here - tethering works fine on my Desire, but the missus Hero doesn't work - hoping for some resolution soon
Just moved house so am without internet for the next week, so tethering is bloody useful right about now!
Have put a 2.2 rom onto my Desire and am using WiFi tethering for now, but doesn't help when I'm not in...
If you are rooted, there is an app that works fine.
But custom roms don't have this issue afaik. VillainROM 12 works fine with tether, as I had to use it at work to test external connectivity to a system.
It's an option and one I will look into.
It worked fine under 1.5 and so far its the only thing that us causing me an issue.
T mobile tech support were able to reproduce, and in their testing they found a factory reset fixed the problem - I have confirmed (as has another user over on the tmobile forums).
Gave me an excuse to clear up the rubbish that had accumulated on phone.
All working now.
its working fine for me :/

and me, just done the Orange OTA 2.1 update and tethering works fine on the phone right after the update... if you need to factory reset to get it working it must be something you have installed on the phone.
Or maybe tmobile did something different to orange. Or maybe the radio roms are different.
Was quite a few tmob users and tmob support so if it was a rogue app then it was a fairly common one
Either way. It's working now.
Wish all problems were resolved as.simply.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I certainly think it has something to do with the installed apps on the phone after the update else why would a factory reset solve it, its not the Rom that is the problem... I take it you had heavily customized your phone.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Actually no- 5 apps, lastfm, xda, facebook, ambling audio book reader and handcent sms - restore took less than 5 minutes after factory reset, all contacts and calendar info on google.
Given that the functions like handing out dhcp address worked, it was fundamentally was "all there" I can easily imagine a startup routine that says something like
if file exists "some config file" then leave it alone
else make a new one
When you reboot, config file exists so leave it alone in, when factory reset - file doesn't exist, make a new one.
Perhaps the key thing is I was a heavy user of tethering before the update, perhaps when I did the upgrade I forgot to "stop" tethering and just pulled the cable - can't remember, so maybe I had a config file/param that the newer kernel, ip stack etc. didn't expect to see and didn't handle well.
The key thing about factory reset isn't the rom I agree, the code is the code - but it's the wiping of the configuration and volatile data - something got broken for me, and the guys at tmobile, and about 5 other users who reported the same problem - so whilst it obviously works for some without a reset, equally it didn't for others - for at least 3 of us (2 end users and 1 at tmobile) a reset was needed.
If it was a one off, absolutely agree, it must have just been me/my setup - but it wasn't an isolated case.
Personally, I was surprised when the 2.1 update didn't wipe the phone, I was expecting it - so in my case no real problem once suggested to me - others might have more dependency on the installed apps and config but for me this was an easy fix.
Either way, it's back working now - so if it works without a reset - great, and if it doesn't work, a reset looks to fix it - so great as well.

[Q] Newbie questions

I just got a Samsung Vibrant yesterday from a 3rd party, and I'm very excited. I know I need to read a lot on this site, but since this is my 1st smartphone, please forgive my basic/naive questions, be gentle on me, and give me some directions so that I won't have to walk in the darkness.
1) I haven't done anything essential to the phone yet, and I'm considering to root, unlock and the phone, and upgrade from 2.1-update1 to 2.2. Which one should I start first, root, unlock, or upgrade? Even though I haven't done much on the phone, do I still need to go through the backup before rooting?
2) Between the IMEI and S/N barcodes, there is '10.10' on the phone which I assume is the manufacture time of Oct. 2010. Would the GPS 'fix' be done with my phone (Build Number: Eclair.UVJI6)? Considering the amount of complaints about the GPS on Samsung Vibrant, how does the GPS work with offline applications like CoPilot? Where should I put the CoPilot Map, in internal or external SD?
3) If I want to make phone calls through WIFI connections without eating up my minutes, what kind of VOIP combination should I consider? Google Voice?
4) What web browser do you recommend? Other nice applications should I put in?
5) When I select Avatar, it says "File not found". Is it supposed to be in the external SD (which seems empty)? Where can I get the file?
Thanks a lot for your help!
I would suggest reading the bible in the Development section. or this
get the proper drivers here.
root with Superoneclick found here. There is another version floating around that works better that is called SuperOneClick for Froyo.
fix 3e recovery (if running stock froyo) software found here runs from your computer with your phone connected and usb debugging turned on.
download the Clockwork Recovery Unlock.zip from either Rom Manager or here (put it in your phones internal SD root)
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TeamWhiskey's Rom Bionix-V 1.2.1 found here
But I would suggest getting to know your Vibrant/android phone if you have never owned one first.
Edit: Calling over wifi uses your plan's minutes. Its meant for poor reception areas where you might have wifi with broadband internet.
Edit2: Most people get rid of the "Avatar" its just the movie and takes up space. I believe it should be on the SD card that came with the phone.
Congrats on the phone
1st is to root it you can use the super-one-click, like the previous post said. There are other rooting but this one is very easy
After that, Read up on the roms the Axura, Trigger, Einherjar, and Bionix are all fine and depending on your need you have really great choices, the Axura has remarkable battery life, for example. So do the reading on which you would like. Once you pick one flash it. Then get Rom manager and Titanium back up. Free from the app store. Then you can start playing. Should you decide that you do not like or just want to try another rom, you can flash over the last most times with out problems. One thing (read the bible) if you do flash over one of the custom roms you will need to disable the voodoo lagfix. This is actually a file conversion. So Read up on that as well. Hope that helps you.

There is the super one click or you can get a copy of the update folder that roots the phone.... place it on the internal sd card go to recovery and install update...... that also will do it. LOOK IN THE STICKY/BIBLE
Thanks a lot for the great help, FlyingPoo and oka1! I really appreciate it.
A couple of more newbie questions:
1) When making phone calls, sometimes I need to key in some options after the phone is connected (for example, when you call a customer service 800 number). How can I bring up a on-screen keyboard when the phone is already connected?
2) It seems my Samsung Vibrant has much weaker WIFI reception than my Mac laptop, and I have to bring the phone closer to the router to get detectable WIFI signal. Is there anyway I can boost the phone's reception capability?
Thanks a lot!

[Q] Syndicate Rom 1.0.2 wireless tether error

So im on Syndicate rom 1.0.2 and i like it alot. its realy fast and smooth. but ever since moving from 1.0.1 the wireless tether app (3.0.9) doesnt work. When i launch the app and click to start tethering it starts initiating the process but freezes right where its trying to use the hotspot and then it makes the phone reboot. Any other verion of this app will FC. Can some one help please? i have reflashed the rom properly a few times and that didnt help. I also tried the tether fix file that k0nane had on his thread and didnt fix anything either. I tried downloading the hotspot fix from Syndicate page and those links dont work anymore. Can some one please help?
EDIT: i have it set on epic 4g in the settings.
Also does any one have a way to fix the tws bug? (i do know the airplane mode trick but was looking for a fix not a workaround)
thanks eveyone in advance....k0nane, thank you for your hard hard work bro
You mentioned 3.0.9 - I assume you mean -pre9. The version included in SRF is 3.0-pre11. You probably shouldn't have flashed that fix, either, because it was for 1.0.1 only.
I'd suggest you remove any copies of the Wireless Tether app you've installed, and reflash 1.0.2. You won't lose any data. See if it works for you then. If it doesn't, uninstall the preloaded version and try others. Wireless Tether is a finnicky beast, but that's expected - the 3.0 branch is experimental for a reason.
Thanks. I will try that and get back to you. And yes I meant the version that came with rom. I will try and get back to you.
Hey I tried everything in your instructions and still the same thing. I knw this wireless tether thing is in experimental stages but it worked fine on 1.0.1. I actually wasnt able to use the pre10 on that rom version so I had downloaded the 2.0.7 version and that worked fine. Do you think it might have to do with the hotspot app ? because i notice wireless tether freezes and phone reboots when its trying to launch hotspot. I notice from the notification when hotspot becomes activated the phone freezes and reboots..
Issue resolved
Well, thank you for your help again. After trying every thing from flashing the rom to uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless tether app I got tired and almost gave up. Then I started playing with the app settings and it turns out that choosing the LG Optimus under Device-Profile is really stable and works the best for me, so far no issues.
I was going to say i had issues which were resolved by selecting EPic 4G(my phone ) in settings. I was able to launch and see it but did not have internet access until i selected my phone as well.

I also selected Samsung epic but this did not work for me. what worked was LG Optimus! it is strange but it works ;-)
I didn't have to do anything and it worked fine for me. I set up Security on it but that's it. Especially with all the ROM flashing I wonder why your phone seems especially finicky. Good luck.
I had errors similar to this when using the app, my problem was that I had 4G turned on already when launching the app. Turning 4G off, launching the app establishing a connection and THEN turning on 4G works perfectly though.
mine would not work either I went to settings and changed my device profile to epic 4g and my set up method to softtap for samsung. that seem to do the trick.

Problem With Custom ROMs And Wireless Tether (AP)

Hi everyone,
I've tried several different ROMs for my Canadian i337m device (e.g. SlimRom, Illusion, CM, Goldeneye, Pacman, Revolt) and the only one capable of sharing my 4G connection with my laptop through is Revolt. This is after about five hours of testing and tons of flashing. I certainly "forgot" the network after each test from my laptop so the connection would be fresh each time. I've tried using various levels of security, including none. My laptop can see the AndroidAP signal and get five bars, but then internet just never loads (except with Revolt, and with stock firmware too). FWIW, I'm on Win7 64bit and I have no driver issues.
Very strange! I've tried flashing a "better tether" fix, but that breaks ROMs (they won't boot, because it's specifically for a certain ROM). I've tried reflashing the stock kernel after each ROM flash, but more often that not that just breaks the ROM flash (stuck in boot). I don't know what to do except use Revolt, which isn't a bad compromise (better than stock) but TBH, I like Illusion's UI navigation transitions so much that I'd like to use that ROM.
Any ideas? Maybe there's a way to slipstream the stock ROM's MobileAP files into another ROM? (Probably not, because stock's settings panel is completely different from other ROMs', but just an idea.)
Thank you for reading.

I am encountering the EXACT same issue on my Rogers Galaxy S4, tethering works with stock firmware, but nothing else, I even called rogers and had them remove and readd the tethering flag on my account. The APN settings on the TW (stock) firmware are exactly the same as the settings on the custom ROMs. Wondering what is missing here.
Howdy,
Found the solution to my tethering issues, simply go to the Play Store and search for this app:
ISWAT Tether Unlocker Free
There will be a rather obnoxiously loud app that will play before it performs the operation to unlock your tethering, but afterwards, it works as it does with the stock ROM. You're free to uninstall the app afterwards and you'll retain your tethering abilities

There will be a rather obnoxiously loud app that will play before it performs the operation to unlock your tethering, but afterwards, it works as it does with the stock ROM. You're free to uninstall the app afterwards and you'll retain your tethering abilities

Glad this worked for you. It's still working for me, but not quite as well, I have to rerun it everytime I restart my device now. Not quite sure why or what it does in the backgroud to enable the tethering.

Hmm, I also need to re run the app after every device reboot.... Oh well at least it works.
OMG thank you, I've been looking for something to fix this for a few weeks now but this did the trick. That ad for bigfish casino was really loud with my speaker mods, but hey, it works so it's good enough.
thanks again
