[Q] Flashed Dk28 modem and PIT, now DATA is sloooowww - Epic 4G General

Ok, was getting ready to flash a new ROM (ViperROM Trinity), and saw I needed to first flash DK28 modem and PIT(whatever those are?), anyway, installed ODIN, loaded the files like it said (only, it said use modem.bin, all I had was modem.tar, but seemed to work) and now my DATA is super slow. I used to get about 1Mb down and over 600 k up on 3G and 6-8mb down and 1.3mb up on 4G, now I'm getting 60k down and 150k up on 3G and 600k down and 600k up on 4G.
Also, have Signal Status Bar app installed, gives me my dbm for signal, Usually the CDMA and EVDO are about the same, but now I can have good CDMA (-70 or so) but I am only showing -1dbm on EVDO all the time, it never changes.
I have flashed back to stock Eclair, up to the leaked stock Froyo, a rooted stock Froyo, and now using Viper Trinity ROM, nothing seems to help.
I honestly don't know if I was having this problem before I flashed the modem and PIT or not, but nothing I do fixes it. I have been all over the place today traveling as far as 40 miles from home, still same everywhere.
FWIW, I had already upgraded to the leaked stock Froyo ROM before I used ODIN to flash the DK28 modem and PIT, I just didn't realize I didn't need to do that before flashing the ROM since I already had it.
Any ideas out there?

Download the data governor fix from ViperRom's thread. Follow the directions. Just make sure to take it easy on data. Don't constantly download large files.

hm, I'll try this. Ya, my 3g data speeds have gone down to around 20-30 kb/sec on average... You think this might help it?
It doesn't seem like the data problem is a "governing" issue.. But could anyone elaborate on what this actually does, or what the data problem is?
Thx for the tip!
Sent from the future.

Edit: applied viper's governor fix, and will continue to test- initial speed tests seem faster, but still under 100kbytes/sec down, about 70 kb up.

I wonder if since you just reflashed if you are syncing google/fb/twitter stuffs. and its slowing you down.

I noticed it too, I get around 40kb down and that sucks a lot, luckily I get 4g at work

no-- the stuff I'm syncing didn't change before/after flash, but I have most turned off:
Account sync: only Gmail (I do contacts and calendar manually)
No Facebook sync (..but I wonder what the SNS service is).
No twitter syncing.
Google Voice widgetservice and updateservice are the only other extras I can think of.
The last speed test I did, I was able to get over 100kb/s down. The odd thing is, my up speed has stayed the same. Before flashing Viper's fix, my down was about half my up. As of last test, my up is about twice my down kb/s (which seems a little more "normal").

yes.. ditto. except, I just have to find a spot and stand very very still.

Well, I hate when I struggle with a problem for a day or two, then post the question, then right after wards I figure it out.
That's what happened though. A little bit after I posted the question I tried Update Profile, and that fixed it. Go figure....
Anyhow, I also installed the data governor fix as recommended and it seems to have upped my speeds a bit. I am now getting over 1.2mbs down, and nearly 800k up. Not too bad for 3G. Haven't tested 4G yet....
Thanks to all for the help.

Anyone else having horrible 3g download speeds?

Recently i have been getting download speeds of about 13-70kb/s. My upload is fine averaging 800kb/s. This all is really odd since i live in a city and usually get around 1500kb down. I have the 60668 prl and the most recent radio. Im running baked snacks with his 2nd fps fix kernel. I dont see where the problem could be. Please help me out thanks
my old Touch Pro brick would average 120KB/s on 3G (STABLE), and now my Evo is barely doing 5KB/s to 10KB/s (VERY UNSTABLE). those 5 to 10 were what I was getting with 1x with Touch Pro. conslusion = Evo has no EVDO? lol, i know it does but the numbers do make you think. i mean, 5KB/s is friggin 1990's DIAL-UP!
There is something jacked with the Evo radios...
I had Sprint reactivate my Touch Pro 2 and using the exact same Home Agent I got 1600kbps last night on the exact same tower that my Evo got 700 off of.
I have never seen my Evo pass 1Mbps... it hits 950 tops. My Touch Pro 2 will pull up to 2.4 - I've seen it myself.
Oh and the upload on the TP2 was 380 compared to 190 on my Evo.
Something is definitely up...
At first I used to get good speeds... and now ive tried 2 dif radios and like you said, its ****ing dialup!! i tried to look in my dialer codes to change some stuff around but they wouldnt even work. this suuucks. I'm in the middle of the sf bay area which needs to get 4g soon and 3g should be fixed... I don't understand haha
when doing wired tethering on Touch Pro, i used the HTC USB Modem driver and simply set up a dialup connection in windows through that modem to #777. one trick i found that maximized the speeds was setting maximum bps to 921600bps (900Kbps) in modem configuration. this way i was pulling very stable 110KB/s downloads with very small latencies...
is there such thing for Android that would allow me to use HTC as a modem? not internet sharing, usb nic, but usb MODEM?
I did some tething tests last night, and started out with real downloads at 60k a second. Over time going up to near 300 and stabalizing around 150 when i stopped.

From what I've heard/read, it's not the radio itself, but it seems to have to do with the PRI (note: not PRL)... most fully rooted phones end up with 1.34 instead of 1.40 and as of yet no one seems to know how to get it back to 1.40 (other than flashing w/ an official RUU, which un-roots you, and from what I've seen even that doesn't always work)... I personally have not seen any difference in my 3G speeds in my area... my guess is, that just like a PRL, your performance will differ based on your coverage area...

ANYONE that went to the engineering build (read: NAND unlocked) is stuck on the 1.34 PRI until it gets updated or someone patches it somehow.
I'm still in the "it doesn't make a difference and this is all placebo" camp though.
I'm consistently getting between 1.5-2.2mb download speeds with 3g and I'm fully rooted.

Data Throttling Governor Removal

Ok, just for S's & G's ... I decided to try the data throttling removal zip Myn provided with RLS5. Now in my area I've had speeds as high as 8mb DL, but generally hover around 1.5mb. Not really what I expect from "blazing fast 4G" lol.
So I ran about 30 speed tests before I installed the removal zip. They all looked very similar to this. (No links = FAIL)
1.75mb DL & 0.45mb UL
I installed the zip file and ran another 30 or so tests. They all looked very similar to this. (FAIL again!)
3.45mb DL & 0.90mb UL
I did this between the hours of 8pm and 9pm, why service really starts to get laggy. It still can't eat a Twinkie faster than a fat girl... but I'll take what I can get.
Anyone else using this??

AFAIK, it'll only work on RLS5, but if the services.jar is unchanged between Sense ROMs, then it should work on others. Just take a Nandroid and try it yourself.

For those of you on Myn's RLS 5 with slow internet

There is a small issue with an app being slightly outdated. If your internet is slow there is a very simple fix. Go to the Market and download Ad free and follow the instructions. If you already have it, update the host file, click revert then reboot and bam you're set
Thanks! It looks like the fix broke the Market theming, but it's nothing I'd lose sleep over.

As was stated above, it's coincidence if installing this app made your market get updated/lose it's theme. Google's been pushing out the new market for a week or so and you finally got yours. Don't worry, Myn will theme it up when he gets the chance
I tried this because my internet has been really slow latly I don't think it made it any faster and it did make market UN theme
I flashed it and at first after the reboot, it didn't seem to help, but its going fine now.

*sigh* Yes it does. Let me guess, you have no idea what's going on, do you?
In the last release of Myn's ROM, he implemented his own hosts file on the back end. Something has happened in regards to that hosts file. Not certain exactly what changed or expired, but the result was that folks who tried surfing web pages that served ads would take a great deal of time to load. Essentially the hosts file was redirecting somewhere and would attempt connection and wait until it hit the timeout limit.
Thus, the most direct resolution, in lieu of Myn's recent absence, is to grab AdFree from the Market, and update your hosts file.
BOOM! That fixed it. Thanks OP for making this thread! A+
Man wish I would have seen this, reason I flashed cm6 after having slow internet on myns
Worked for me. Thank you!

Yep...just installed Ad Free and market is back at the green instead of Myns black. However the internet is MUCH faster
5-6MB down and 1.5MB up on 3G
Thanks
Thankyou!!
OP, a very big thankyou must be said, I honestly can't tell you the last time I had a web page actually load and it has been driving me nuts. Now everything is back how it should be and running like a champ. Funny part is that I didn't put ad free on because Myn had already built in a hosts file, little did i know that's what the problem was.
Thanks again
do the host files to block ads affect internet speed for both 3g and 4g?
Awesome, thanks! I was going crazy reflashing kernels and radios trying to get it too work properly.
Had I actually taken a second to think about it, the solution makes perfect sense. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction!
3g works great now, obviously fixed, but 4g is not. Symptoms are identical to what was happening before installing adfree. I tried reverting, updating host file, updating prl, cant figure out why 3g loads in 1 second, 4g just sits there forever
Edit... After further testing it appears my 4g is actually working, just really ****ty. Maybe a bad time of day, maybe the 4g network is having problems, who knows. Its sad that 3g seems to be quicker for browsing, 4g is better for video or large downloads...
Thanks for advising everyone

Crappy 3g?

Hey has anyone ever had really ****y 3g service on sprint and improved it somehow? I was running the speed test app and I get .12 mbps down and .12 megabytes per second down. The results were always the same even before i rooted. The odd thing is I just got my wife a line on my account and she's working with the Kyocera echo and she gets almost 2 mbps down and 1 mbps up and were on the same towers and have the same PRL version. I'll call Sprint and they'll either say there's towers down or blame it on the evo or tell me to go to a repair store to blow me off. The 3g service is so horribly slow of there's not 4G or WiFi in the area I'm in then I'm not online. Anyone with info thanks in advance.

If you say your wife is getting awesome speed and yours is sh*t go to a sprint store and prove it. Or tell them to whip out their display model of the evo and do a comparison speed test. Also keep in mind this phone is over a year old so all the hardware is kind becomming more and more obsolete.

Try to update your radio to the latest. You could also try other PRLs just to see what happens. The 00001 PRL that uses Verizon is a good one. And if u are only getting .12 down, then u r on 1X and not 3G even though u see the 3G icon at the top.
If I take it to a sprint store won't they deny me service because the phone is rooted? The radio update sounds good but How do I update my radios? Thanks.

Here go and flash the combo zip on this page. And dear God whatever you do NEVER PULL THE BATTERY WHILE IT IS UPDATING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it takes a little bit for them to update and some people decide to pull the battery and turn there evo into a very fancy paper weight. After you flash I believe you have to reboot by clicking Reboot now in recovery and it will take you to a different screen where they actually update. Then I think you get put back in recovery and you reboot again and your done. Make sure you flash with amon-ra recovery because clockwork is terrible in case you were using clockwork...

Try to do an ota activation where it reprovisions. Go into ##3282#, edit mode, data profile, hit menu, and then restore. This will reboot your device and perform the ota activation. It may take a few minutes. U will need your msl to log in to the ##3282# edit menu. If u don't have it, download msl reader from the market and you're good.
Reposting this, I've done this in several threads before....
This is mostly everything I can think of that will give you better 3G
My suggestion:
Back up. Nandroid.
Download all latest radios. Check my sig for a link.
Wipe cache and dalvik.
Flash radio. Reboot. (All reboots will take you back into recovery)
Flash Wimax. Reboot.
Flash PRI. Reboot.
Flash NV. Reboot.
Flash a rooted Sense ROM, based on the Evo (this disqualifies MikG, Director's Cut, Synergy and other Sense 2.1 / 3.0 ROMs, because those are based on the Evo Shift/3D (I've had issues with Shift/3D-based ROMs not reprovisioning data). Update PRL. Reboot.
Go into EPST (Dial ##3282#, Choose edit mode), enter your MSL code (download and use MSL Reader from the Market to get it), Data Profile, hit the menu button and choose restore. Just sit there, your phone will reboot and everything will go back to default. Let it reprovision, but when it says "Updating PRL" hit cancel.
##3282#, enter MSL, Advanced, change both Proxy ports to 0, proxy addresses to 0.0.0.0
Hit menu button, "save changes", back out to home screen and reboot
Wipe everything in recovery three times, flash ROM of choice (clean install)
3G Supercharge if you wish
But you are talking about Sprint 3G which isn't that good in the first place

3G Speed Testing Results and Information [GB results posted]

Hi Folks, I looked around for a thread like this and didn't find one, but if there's one out there let me know and please send me a link!
I would much appreciate it if you folks out there could do a few tests and contribute to this thread. Use the Speedtest.net app and do 5 runs, take an average, and let me know what rom, modem, location, and pertinent addons and settings you have.
I am on a stock rom, rooted with the Revolted Kernel.
I did some testing with 3G speeds just to see if anything I could do would change the abysmal speeds we get here in the Greenville, SC area. I did 5 consecutive Speedtest.net app runs for each test, and averaged the results, noting the time and other details. Background data was off on all tests, and signal strength stayed very stable around -80db. I kept the phone in the same location on the desk for each test. The results are as follows (average values are in the order of ping, download, upload):
Test 1. No reboot, no adds, EC05 Server: Toledo OH
9:55 AM
209,523,528
Test 2. Reboot, no adds, EC05 Server: Toledo OH
10:00 AM
231,381.6,413.2
Test 3. Reboot, no adds, Fresh EC05 odin with EFS Clear Server: Augusta, GA
10:15 AM
184,414.6,533.4
Test 4. Reboot, Supercharger V6 version 8, EC05 Server: Atlanta, GA
10:52 AM
205.8,404.2,605
Test 5. Reboot, SCV6, 3G Turbocharger3 update 11 setting 1 (fast). EC05 Server:Ringgold, GA
11:12
322.4,527,605.6
Test 6 Reboot, SCV6, 3G T3 update 11 setting 3 (fastest) EC05 Server: Atl, GA
11:24
196.8,319,489
Summary? They were all basically the same, nothing I was able to do had any significant effect of the speeds in a positive or negative manner. This is in no way conclusive, but is kindof interesting. I think the story here is that I am at what the network is capable of. If this is true, this is pretty sorry 3G speeds.
I am going to try different modems at some point, and post those results here as well. If you would like to see my data sheet, I have it in Excel, PM me and I'll send it to you
*Modem and GB test results in Post 2!*
Ok, here are my preliminary tests with the modems. Supercharger V6, 3G turbocharger level 3, stock rom, rooted, revolted kernel, basically same as above. Signal stable for all tests around -76 to -80db.
EC05; Retest for control; Time 13:24; Server Augusta, GA

EG22; Time 14:20; Server Bixby, OK
231.6,280.4,437
Gingerbread EH17 With EH17 Modem Tests
Test 1: No addons, very stock GB, Background Data off. Did 10 runs instead of 5, was getting very inconsistent results. 5 results had DL's less than 100, one as low as 35, and one run DL was 544. Confusing. Upload was relatively consistent.

I have done some testing of the modems in the past, and found almost no difference for them for my location either, similar speeds and lack of variance to the results for the tweaks posted above. I think at least for some of us (myself included) the network just won't do any more than a certain amount. I can only postulate that if that is the case, it doesnt matter what kind of modem, tweaks, rom, etc you have. I am pretty jealous of those folks who tried modem a b or c and significantly increased their 3g speeds (and would be jazzed to actually see that data from speedtest trial runs). I think for my location, what you see up there is what I got, reguardless. That being said, look for results for modems sometime soon.
I'm just interested in seeing some actual results from different locations using the same testing method. I know that my format isn't truly scientifically sound, but I don't want to, nor would I dream of asking anyone else to, do 100 trials of each of those for each and somehow elaborately control every other possible variable, but by controlling the variables the best we can, it will produce relatively reasonable results.

I'm using Hurricane EH17, with the GPS Fix and msacik's kernel to fix reboots. Also using the EH17 modem with an EFS Clear.
If anything, data generally worked smoother in CM7, or at least SpeedTest indicated as such.
I just tested again and got:
1132/499 130ms ping
1615/454 125ms ping
1576/331 125ms ping
3G here. No 4G.
Put EH17 GB on my phone for the first time yesterday, with the EH17 modem. Data speeds seem to have taken a hit. Going to experiment with settings and post test results here in a bit.
