Hi I've been spending the morning trying to root my Legend according to the guide in the Developers section. Everything went smoothly from downgrading up to Step 1 of the root procedure. It's getting stuck at writing 'zip' and Google didn't really help much, most people who had this problem either didn't get a proper answer or it was caused by problems creating the goldcard, which I'm sure I got right. Does anyone know the problem?
Try running a linux virtual machine and continue from there, its how I got it working.

If you got through step1 you can just download clockworkmod's update.zip and place it in the root of your sdcard. Then enter recovery and flash the room you like. This worked for me..

Thanks, I got it working from my Linux, I've had a dual-boot but haven't been able to get adb working in it until this.
Something else about flashing new firmware - when I want to upgrade ROMs such as from CM 6 to 6.1, do I need to do a wipe? What does the wipe actually do and will I lose all my settings again?
I installed the new 2.2.320 sbf from TBH, just to start fresh. I have now tried 6 different programs to root my phone. None of them are working...Is anyone else having this issue? And if you got it working, what steps did you take to fix it? Thanks in advance
Use z4root. Had The same problem. This is a one click root application.
Yup, same problem here too. I was actually going to ask if anyone has the z4 root app because it disappeared from the market. It was the only thing that worked the first time I flashed the new SBF.
ya, after flashing the new SBF, had to manually install Z4 as it wasnt in the market. Also it seems as if the D2 method wasnt working properly.
Thanks for the help everyone...

I don't know what the reasoning is, but no other root methods seem to work on 2.2.1.
z4root worked fine for me

YEs it works. That was the point of this thread. lol
I had to wipe data to get z4 to work. I don't know why but if I downloaded all my apps again and set everything up it wouldn't work.
Put your phone in airplane mode, reboot, run z4root, let it reboot you phone. Once it powers on take it out of airplane mode and you should be rooted.

Rooting through ADB works... z4root is much easier of course.
The .340 OTA installed on my phone today. Lost root.
I tried the DarkOnion batch file (DoRootWin_2.1.4) several times and could not get it to run to completion.
As mentioned, Z4 (in airplane mode) worked fine.
I tried this...my phone is telling me it cannot down the file because the file type is not suported by my phone. What am I missing? Thank you!!!
I too am having issues with rooting after the ota update. I initally was rooted using the rootmyx2 one click gui from sli3ntki11 and did the update, now nothing will give me root access, I tried z4, rootmyx2 (again), and tried the doroot.bat method through the android sdk install. Kinda at a loss. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

So I believe I figured it out. I have two existing superuser.apk in my system/app folder. This from what I read in some other posts is confusing z4 ( go figure smart enough to root but not to overwrite, lol) but the directory is read only. The other post gave a link to the steps to access it but the page was not found. Can anyone give me the steps to take to gain access to the directly and make it read/write so I can remove those two rogue files and get rooted?

z4root not supported on my droid X
hi,
i updated my Droid X to the latest version. 2.3.340. and downloaded the z4root through my phone from the link here and i get an error message that the file is not supported on this phone. please help i am new to this and still don't fully understand all of the terms. i tried to download the z4root 1.2 from 4shared.com but the phone hangs and nothing happens. any type of help will be appreciated, thanks.
did you sucessfully install it or did you get the error while trying to install it. you will have to download the apps installer from the market and use it to install the z4root.apk from your sd card.

Can't root after installing Tranquility!
Anyon,e please I could use some advise. Not sure what I should do before I jack up my phone!
If you have lost root, you will need to root your phone again if you want to use bootstrap recovery. Try to find z4root

I tried several times and when I do phone just reboots, will not allow me to?
Reboots when you try to root?

I figured it out, I did a factory reset and was able to download koush's recovery and get back. I guess I still had root, market wouldn't let me download any apps that needed to be rooted.
Ok so I had rooted my D2 a few days ago and had been looking into backup/recovery apps. Now however it seems as if my phone is no longer rooted. Is this possible? I thought I had read another thread where someone else was having this problem but was unable to find it. I tried to open up my superuser app and titanium backup app, but both ended in a failure and asked if my phone was rooted. Thanks in advance for anyone's help with this!
Also, just noticed that my superuser app isn't working correctly. The widget changed from being labeled "superuser" to "superuser permissions". I had assumed that this was after my phone had updated some other applications, however the superuser app won't turn on, it just gives me a black screen. When I tried to update through the market it said "Package file was not signed correctly". I'm unable to find the app on my phone so I can delete and try to download it again fresh. Thanks again for any advice anyone has!

Yeah. Phones can unroot themselves. This usually happens when the phone updates itself. Don't stress though... just root your phone again.
So, then with the superuser permissions app that I found on my phone...if I were to re-root my D2 with a different method of rooting vs the first way, would I be able to uninstall that superuser permissions app if I wanted? Thanks for such a quick response!

What was your first method. I would just use z4root. Also, did you install a custom rom? If so maybe reflash the rom after you are rooted again.

I had used the 1-2-3 step for rooting as my husband had suggested that. I have z4root installed now but haven't done anything yet. My husband had suggested I get some back-up apps for my phones system and also one for my apps in case I kill my phone. Will the droid 2 bootstrap back-up/restore my original phone system in case I do mess it up?

ok maybe i just cant find it anywhere or what but ive become a pro at flashing roms and stuff on my droid razr...and i just recently got my Nexus 7 and want to do all the same perks but obviously im in that early stage....so quickly, i have already unlocked my bootloader and rooted my device, but im having trouble finding how to flash custom roms and what not, its a little different from my razr i guess huh.....where do i start...ive been using the Nexus Tool Kit 1.1.0 and trying to mess with it a little to figure everything out like i did the razr but im trying to desperatly not to screw it up....so can someone please tell me the easiest way to start flashing, what recovery i use and how to get to it etc.....thanks so much!
If you're permanently rooted, just download goo manager from the play store. Open the app and press menu, select install OpenRecoveryScript and follow the instructions and say yes to the disclaimers, then reboot.
