[Q] SD Class Choice for best performance - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I looked for a thread like this but couldnt find one. I apologize in advance if it does exist.
But it seems like people here rarely mention the type/size of SD card to be used when running android - which seemed odd to me, because i though the SD will be extremely important, performance wise.
So do u guys have any idea what SD card type performs the best and what partition size?
Logically, I bought a class 10 8GB SD card. Well it performed poorly and worse than my 4gb Class 6 card (testing the same BUILD by copy pasting the card contents).
I tried changing the sector size to 64kb. Performance improved a little but still bad.
So I am getting confused and would appreciate some help, maybe from those you who know more.
Simple question: what's the best SD card for running android on HD2 (if there is such a thing)?
And is the SD card speed important and does it affect the smoothness of the Android build radically?
Thanks in advance guys

The size is up to you, as you can make a data.img to your liking which allows you to have more apps.
It's not "radically" significant for smoothness.
As far as brand; many different brands with many different opinions. Just make sure to format it correctly before you begin.

[Q] HD Video Recording Jerky, Because Of Class Of SD Card?

Howdy, I tried to film the aftermath of the bizarre weather we've been having here in Scotland yesterday, but I noticed that when I played it back, even converted it to an HD Avi and ran it through VirtualDub that at certain points the video lags and freezes, the sounds remains the same but the picture will pause for a second. I'm assuming (based on some research on Google and here) that it's because the memory card I'm using was the basic Class 2 that was shipped with the phone. Assuming I buy a Class 6 or that, the card will be fast enough to write HD video to it? I'm just wondering if any of you have had these problems, and/or does a higher class SD card fix it? (before I buy one!). Or, is it for a separate reason on the Desire Z that the video is jerky? Thanks! Below is my video should you want to see an example!

Yes the class can have a massive impact on HD recording on this phone (and others), get a class 6 and you should soon see the differences.

Thank you, I shall, I just wanted to make sure! On a side note, if I change my memory card does Android get confused because of how it "deals" with the SD Card? (I'm coming from five years of Windows Mobile & I know they had no issues with SD Cards being swapped) but I noticed Android "Prepares The SD Card" whenever you unmount it or that.. Is it a straight forward swap and everything's working or is it a hassle of reinstalling certain things? Thanks!

I only ever copy files over, never had any issues doing that.

Perfect thanks! I'm away to buy one, I assume that a higher class will improve the frame rate too! Thanks for your help!
Mine even stops recording after 13 seconds or so. Also have an older 16GB Class 2 card. I'm also getting a good Class 6 one.
Regarding files on the sdcard: Just copy everything from your old card to the new one. If you are using linux, be sure to also copy the hidden directories

Thank you, shall do! I'm just waiting on it now!
I have a 16Gb Class 6 card and have noticed the same thing with my HD video recordings being choppy.
I attributed it to other things going on such as data downloading or the system splitting resources to keep other balls in the air at the same time.
I can live with it, but would like it to be better as well.
I don't think the Class 6 card will make a difference for you, but it can't hurt either.
As to switching microSD cards, there's no issue with that. I don't know what happens behind the scenes when it's 'preparing the SD card' but the only issue I had was on the G1 when I was using apps2sd and have all of my apps on the ext3 partition.
I use a couple of different microSD cards regularly, no issues with swapping.
Good luck!

I'm using a 8GB Class4 card, same situation.
I tried to disable Live Wallpaper, put the phone in Flight Mode, close all user background program, overclocked to 1.4GHz. still lags.
If you change to the resolution just below the HD level then the videos record smoothly even on my 8gb class 2 card.
Does formatting the SD card with a different allocation unit size increase performance? Can anybody with a spare mini SD card test this -- the higher the size the better the performance (but more space gets eaten up by small files). The general idea with this is if the aus is small it conserves file space but you get slower read/writes -- if the aus is higher you get faster read/write but files take up more space.
I wonder if there is a good alternative video recording app that would handle the recording better...?

Ah that's a good point if anyone has one spare!
Yeah, the 480 works fine on my standard SD too!

For info i had bought a Kingmax class10 8gb, to swap with the supplied one but
after a 10 hours use of my desireZ, i had a message "sd card is read only"(corrupted files on it, in fact), at that time i used only googlenavigation/Layar/whatsApp as software "using Sdcard" and took 2 or 3 pictures with the camera for testing.
perhaps it's a single defective unit, but for feedback and history purposes, i post that

[q] sd card speed matters

Hello All I have a very simple question but plays a very important role in performance.
I got a 2GB SD CARD FROM SAMSUNG.
I have another LOCAL SD CARD 4GB
My question is will the SPEED Remain same to transfer or access data from both these SD CARDS.
I mean to say is will the LOCAL SD CARD BE SLOWER(since its not samsung branded) IN ACCESSING AND RETRIEVING DATA which will eventually slow down my phone or something like that.
I hope you all understood my question..will elaborate if u want me to.
hoping for a good answer.
Thanks
so many views yet no replies
cumon guys a small opinion would make a big difference
I am not very knowledgeable about this, but the class of the SD card matters when comparing performance. Here is a link that might help:
http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech/speed_class/
i have noticed that when i changed sd card from samsung original (came with phone) to new transcend 8gb sd card, phone is now booting for 5 minutes....
It being a samsung card doesn't make the card more "compatible" with a samsung phone. A card is defined by the card, not by the brand.

yeah so it means that performance has degraded right.
Also i think booting is not much worry as its done from ROM
so apart from booting what else is buggy or degrading performance, comparing both 2 GB and 8 GB
its on a card to card basis, if it is slower for him it doesnt mean it will be slower for you.
You should use a Class 6 SD card. Slower cards are not adequate.
Sent from my GT-I5801 using XDA App
You can use a class 6 SD card, however, i do not think the phone is capable of handling such high speed cards, and thus the read/write speed of the phone will limit the speed.
Conclusively i don't think there will be an increase in performance!

Slow market with SD card inserted and superfast without

Does any one have the problem?
When I forgot to insert the SD card when flashing WP7, the market downloads were blazing fast. Unfortunately I had to reset the phone with the card in place and after that, now the downloads are crawling.
Do you know why? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
maybe it's because MicroSD memory is usually slower than Nand memroy.
Idk if by upgrading to a higher sdcard class will improve performance, but if u have another memory card around (with has different Class or Brand) why don't you test it with the market apps downloads and come back and tell us if u noticed any changes in performance?
no no no no,
righty, first things first, try reflashing with the SD in, it shouldnt make any difference over a hard reset but its worth the shot.
the reason its slow assuming the above doesnt work is because your SD card isnt compatible, there is some evidance that formatting the SD card in a digital camera has some effect but i think the best performance comes from cards that work from the outset.
note there isnt any list of compatibe cards, DO NOT assume that any card "recomended" by anyone will work.
statistically you have a better chance with a class 2 or 4 card, but that doesnt mean a class 6 or 10 wont work, no brand of card is above this issue, sandisk suffer just as much as the next brand.
in short, its luck if you can get one that works or not, theres nothing else too other than try sticking to class 2 or 4.
oh if your running a class 2 card fine, dont assume a class 4 will be quicker, it might not, it just depends on teh card...and a spot of luck1
Thanks for the reply!
I have the stock sandisk class 2 card that came with the phone. I think it might be similar to when Android was on SD card and the market downloads were really slow too. But after RAM builds and NAND builds came along, the dolwnloads happen blazingly fast.
Anyway, thanks for replying

[Q] Is microSDHC Class 10 compatible with HTC HD2?

I ordered a ADATA 8GB MicroSDHC Class 10 memory card for my HTC HD2. I'd like to know if it will work well on my phone since the transfer is so high. I'm asking this because I want to use a SD version on android.
Thank you in advance for the answer!
When i asked my friend who was the Sales Director of Sandisk Australiasia, he said that the read and write speeds of the supplied Class 2 was more than enough, since these Class 2 is the minimum guaranteed write speeds for that card.
Personally, i'd like to use a faster card, but i think that the key here is the quality of the card over the speed. Im using android over SD and dont mind the negligible lag.
Perhaps someone who has tried a faster card can comment on Droid on SD, as NAND speed offers the fastest, but without the flexibility.

I found a really old thread where people were saying it is fully supported. Thanks for the answer! I want to use android on the sd too because I don't really want to risk messing up my phone with a rom install.
It's been around for ages that the speed of the SD doesn't matter for SD android.
what matters is the access time, here's a thread for benchmarks:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048649
the smaller the access time the better. in other words, you might get a class 10 card with long access time, and a class 2 with short access time, the class 2 will perform better overall (faster system loading, etc). but when you copy large files the class 10 will be faster.
meaning: for running android on SD you need a faster access time, and each millisecond counts.
[edit] forgot to say that random read and write speeds play a good role as well.
I use PNY 32GB class 10 MicroSD card in my HD2. No problem at all. Phone is only one week old and haven't installed any cooked ROM yet so 32GB card on stock ROM.
yes, a class 10 would work perfect with stock or custom windows ROMs. and with NAND android to some point.
I'm talking about SD android which, in case you haven't read the previous posts, he wants to run a build on his SD. and that's where the class 10 cards start to look bad. they mostly have slower random read/write speeds. In usage terms that's: lags, lags, errors, and more lags.

memory card help

I have a micro sd 2gb card , its class 4. And i have problems when i install some roms with data on ext, and similar.. so i will buy a new one.
i need an advice from you.. Which card should i buy so i can get that my hd2 works normally with rom with data on ext ( i mean that the partition sd card to be the main memory for all that stuff on phone) ?
Which class and size?
thanks

Size depends on your usage, you'll have to judge for yourself. I personally would stick to class 2 or 4, they perform as well if not better than class 10 cards for running SD Android, class 10s are only really good for large file transfers. Far more important than class is brand from what I've seen. SanDisk and other branded cards perform much better than unbranded cards (although this obviously comes at a higher price too).
I'd be very grateful if you could explain the contrary between this:

I don't have class 2 micro sd card. Comparing class 4 G.skill and class 10 Sandisk on HD2 they are almost the same write speed to 5MB/s-7MB/s. but testing on PC, the class 10 is faster can reach 10MB/s write.
... but as we all know by now, the raw write speed of the card is no indicator of how well it will perform, since most files accessed are in the 4k filesize range, and many class 10 cards have TERRIBLE 4k block size read/write speed, whilst lower class cards ( 8, 6, 4) usually have better 4k random read/write speed.

Basically what samsamuel said. If you have the time, you could also read this thread from ny_limited, which explains a lot about SDs. It's in the Android general though so I don't know if it'll have anything about specifically running an OS from the SD card. Either way, he's very adamant on the NexusHD2 thread that class doesn't necessarily matter.
