I just wanted to know what are some OTHER benefits to movie apps to the SD card?
I know that it will save you some space on the built-in phone memory, but is that really it?
Please correct me if i'm wrong, Won't the apps launch faster and run smoother if they are on the built-in phone memory? Also won't it save a little bit a battery since it doesn't have to transfter back and for from built-in phone memory<->SD to run apps?
Just a thought.
There's no difference at this time, now that phones come with at least 1gb or rom. In the future, when games increase in size, there will be some benefit to it but I wouldn't worry about it at this time.

Hi
Are there any pros/cons to installing programs on the SD versus the device memory (not including that the SD's capacity is greater).
Tried a search but could not find an answer.
Thanks

Think of your phone as a pc with limited space to store apps/software/programs/games etc. Now imagine you have filled most of the space available. What would happen to your pc? It would slow down wouldn't it?
Same applies to your phone.

correct me if i'm wrong but i've always been under the impression that certain apps works better off system memory. obviously you dont want to install everything there - stuff like games i keep on sd but system apps I (personally) keep in system memory.

Your right, I had the same question myself but I noticed some apps would auto install to Device so obviously need to be there, I also follow FallenSpartens advice and try to limit what I put on device memory, I think its a personal choice thing, if you have the available memory use the device, as its faster access, however I dont use more than 50% of that memory.
There is an app called SD Tuneup that supposedly improves the SD data transfer up to 30% but I have had mixed reviews, but I installed to my device anyway lol......I install things like task bar apps to device etc all the rest on SD card, may as well mention too that I use Garmin XT this is a big GPS program which is mostly stored on the SD so there must not be a huge difference between the two.
Hope that helps
So, I was wondering if it would be better to install apps on the memory card or on main memory. In terms of stability, performance, etc
Thanks!
Main memory.

Yep, main memory especially if you're using the crap class 2 card that came with the phone.
I usually install games/apps that i use frequently on the phones main memory. All other games/app, I install it to the storage card. It is stable for me and also leaves space on the phone for other things.
I agree with halojinx. I try to keep my device memory as empty as possible. I throw the large files on the storage card and create shortcuts to them with quicklinks. That way my phone runs quicker. Works for me. : /
Since we have such a big system memory, I have no idea what would drive you guys to move your apps to your SD card.
I know I keep all my .cab files on my SD card, but all my installations go to the system memory.
I have 8gb class 6 micro SD, but the 16gb holds so much more music and video files, I don't really use the 8gb anymore.
rickyoon.vegas;
I agree with you. We have more than enough memory to install a huge amount of apps in the main memory.
Installing it to the main memory won't take up your RAM space for apps to run.
Main memory will use less of your battery also and will not cause your HD2 to freeze because of the generic card that came with the unit.
Yes, there's a metric crapload of on-board memory for apps on the HD2...I think it's a much better policy to install all apps to the phone's memory, and just store the cabs themselves on the storage card. I also believe that installing apps (and all their related minute little files) to the SD card can cause device lag in general when the phone is trying to index the card.

Sweet. I was thinking "oh, when I flash I won't need to reinstall the apps if they're on the SD card!" Well I was still installing them after I flash, so I figured I may as well just start installing them to main memory.
Yeah, the crap Class 2 SD card makes me nervous. Once I have the $50, I'll go buy me a nice Class 6
Thanks!
Hi guys. I am aware that there are apps like app2sd to move apps from phone to SD card. How does installing apps on phone or SD card affects the phone? Does it make the phone faster or save battery life?

Hi,
It's all about internal memory.
Go to settings, SD & Phone storage and look at available space under internal storage.
If the ROM you are using gives you hundreds of spare MBs,then you don't have a problem.
When you install new apps, the spare space is used up.
If you are not blessed with loads of spare space, then you would consider moving apps to your SD card, and running them from there.(Try using SuperBox to move the ones you can)
Running apps from your phone is quicker.
It has no affect on your battery life.

-- makes the phone faster, saves internal memory , your phone has a small hard drive or internal memory like a computers hard disk, the more free space you have on the phone the faster it would read or function. correct me if im wrong tnx
Hi guys. Thanks for the helpful replies. Really appreciate it. Thanks again!
Ok i am new to Android i just traded my iPhone 3G for a HD2. I spent around 3 or 4 hours trying to get it running the way i like. After many errors i am on NexusHD2-Gingerbread_V2.9_NAND_(Android-2.3.5) and i am very happy. So now i need some help and yes i did look around before i am asking this. I read on a forum that i could install my apps onto my memory card and not into the phone is this true for the OS i am running now. And also i wanted to know if there is any apps i may need to make my phone run better even some cool apps i make need just to be happy/
hi razielleonhart, I believe you're referring the to the ext-sd function. To do that you'll have to repartition your SD card. You can do that in CMR (I believe you are booting form NAND?). Normally just choose a ext partition size and set the SWAP memory to 0 (I'm not sure what the SWAP is for, but I think it's to compensate your RAM if your RAM runs out of space, but that's unlikely on the HD2). When you boot back into Android you will notice that your "internal" memory has increased. Not all ROMs support this, and you'll have to check the thread on the particular ROM to see if the developer has cooked his ROM for that.
And you might want to check out some cool (but sometimes slightly hazardous apps) like SD booster (sets a new cache size on your SD card to make it run faster, just search the market) or SetCPU (allows you to overclock/underclock your phone's CPU, see link at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419).
yeah, do I really need to move app2sd for Galaxy Note? What's benefit if I do this?
I was previously using Nexus One, and of course I need it bcoz not enough internal space. But now Galaxy Note has like at least 14Gb, so I really need a move? Will it save more battery if app2sd?
of the 16gb we are given, only 2gb is allocated to apps. although most apps are smart nowadays and will install the bulk of the game data to the SD card, or in our case, the HDD.
wont really save more battery if you use apps to sd.
and you dont need to install apps to SD. its somewhat integrated into gingerbread. just go to settings, applications, manage applications, tap on the application, and theres a 'move to sd card' button here.
I used a 1Gb partition for apps2sd on my Nexus One, so 2Gb is plenty for me.

oh wtf?! only allocated 2Gb for apps?! that's ridiculous! waste of the rest of free space! bcoz my mp3s are in external 32Gb card and more than enough.
Without any apps2sd for now, I still have 784Mb free....

looks like you've downloaded a lot, lol. just use the apps to sd integrated into gingerbread that i mentioned above.
pretty much all manufacturers stick with 2gb as the general amount of space to allocate for apps. they have to account for the average media user - which will use more music and video than apps, and then the power user - which will use more apps/games than music and videos.
on my old n900, it was possible to resize the apps partition, im sure theres someone out there who knows how to do it for android if you need more space.

Yes, many useful apps for daily use for me. now many new Android apps are in larger size and no app2sd function unless you root it, but I am not gonna root my Galaxy Note. Before I thought it's like iPhone, all spaces can use for apps... Sigh...
I did root for my Nexus One bcoz it had only 500mb for apps @@

Hi Souai, what can you say about this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332244
Someone there says you can't fully utilize the Note's sd card for apps because of the directory structure, although another one was confident that you can indeed install apps to your sd card.

its the same as was on my atrix. not everyone uses SD cards, and SD cards are also removable, so rather than having people hotswap an SD card and lose some of their apps when using another app function, manufacturers have started renaming the onboard storage as 'SDCard' in an attempt to make it more usable for consumers.
so if its like my atrix, moving it to the SD card will just move it to the onboard storage. for the OP, its fine since it will use the other large chunk of the 16gb onboard storage that he hasnt really used yet.
dunno about needing root access to run apps to sd. it ran fine for me on my atrix on froyo without root access. but then due to the labelling structure of the onboard storage, it just moved the data to the onboard storage.
generally, its not an issue unless you think you'll really need more than 16/32gb of apps storage in this case.

I'm pretty sure I'll need more than 16gb or 32gb, so this looks like an issue for me. Thanks anyway.

I'd hate to see what your app drawer would look like with 32gb's worth of applications installed!

I get ya, but the answer to that potential horror is "folders". I currently use an iPhone 4 and have installed over 250 apps, but I only use 3 home screens - everything is neat and tidy. I'm planning to do the same when I get the Note.
