As everyone knows the latest facebook app has push messaging built in.
Can anyone explain if this is part of some new SDK or something totally different. I see google has something called android cloud messaging service but its in "beta" for the time being.

I notice you can add instant messaging mediums under your profile and other contacts but when you goto click on them to chat with that client it doest do anything. What am I missing? Also is there a way to add pics to your facebook account thru the built in client?

Edit any one of your contacts, or edit your own profile and you will see a section to add instsnt messaging such as msn, yahoo and aim. Ive put stuff in there and the once done you will see under that contact an option to chat using aim,etc but iy doesnt do anything.

Trillian is releasing a version for Android (to round out the set with the iPhone, And BlackBerry versions). Maybe a program like that can hook into that information. We should know soon when the beta is released.

So something happened today after a power cycle, i lost all my facebook contacts under my contact page. In the end its not that big of a deal becuase i believe i backed them all up to google... I did however enjoy the ability to use the updates tab under everyones name before calling them so i was up to date. I also liked having the up to date pics of them via facebook. So i double checked and made sure facebook was still syncing everything under the contacts, and it was. However everyones facebooks contact is just outright gone now. Not just missing pictures or not displaying updates... gone.
I cant seem to find a way to reenable this. Any ideas?

This happened to me also. Resynchronizing them doesn't seem to do anything. It sucks. I thought that I could go into Groups under contacts and add them all again, but there isn't any option to add contacts to the preexisting groups. That's actually the only part of TouchWiz that's really pissed me off so far. It would be great if someone could figure out how to fix this.
Do you think the update to Facebook caused this?

See at first i thought it might have had something to do with the facebook update. but i had not updated my facebook at the time. I hage since then thinkinkijg it would fix the problem, but it has not helped at all.
Contacts are still MIA for me at this point. Anyone got ideas?

Lost all Facebook contacts? That sounds more like a feature than a bug
Hi all
Forgive me for being a total stupid noob, BUT...
I have just got the Samsung Nexus and have come from the HTC Desire.
I thought, similar to HTC Sense, I could add a Facebook account and in the people app, I would get contact photos and status updates.
However when I try and press the Facebook icon in the add account tab, nothing happens.
I know there are apps out there that can pull in contact photos, but is there no actual Facebook integration as in Sense?
Thanks.
LF
“We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation — and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.”

It's just a Google/Facebook pissing match. What is stupid is the Facebook app allows contact syncing on all Android phones except the Nexus line. So the only people this hurts is Nexus users. I really think Google should figure something out to make it work instead of punishing users for their fight with Facebook over data liberation.
I use friends sync for just that. Download from the market.

Cyanogenmod puts the Facebook sync back in if you go with that rom.

Yep, Bugless Beast and MIUI do also.
It's one line in ContactSyncProvider.apk that blocks com.facebook.katana.

Hey,
I have a 3g 7 and am trying to figure out how to get sms integration with the new Facebook messenger. I realize it may be currently only supported on certain phones, but didn't know if someone figured out a work around. I am using Google voice with an altered stock Messaging app (gv messaging). Thanks

Is there any way to get it working? I don't want to be forced to use the GMAIL app for my other accounts.
You can find the POP and IMAP settings here.

I wonder if someone with an older gapps package can pull the apk that has it. I know some still use the other app for exchange.
