Backup homescreen settings? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just wondering if there is any way of backing up everything that I have placed on my homescreen? I hate when I flash a new ROM and I have to put everything back on my homescreen the way I had it. I know u can do that with launcherpro, but I don't want to. I actually love the espresso UI, I'm tired of stock UI (came from the MT3G). So is there any way to backup my homescreen without having to change my launcher? Thanks

Nope.......

I have only done this once, but it worked fine. I think as long as you are on the same ROM it shouldn't hurt...
Restore the cache from a previous backup with ROM Manager. All my home screen settings were restored.

Titanium backup? I dont know if it will do UI settings for the espresso UI (which I hate) but it worked great for launcher pro (and every other piece of data on my phone lol)

[Q] Using other launcher instead of Sense

Hello Dear Community!
I have now almost decided to move from WinMo to Android. I choose it because of its supposed customisability. So, getting back to the main question: I don't want to do anything aggressive to Sense, like disabling or removing it. I just want to know if its no problem to download and install a different launcher (like ADW) and use it instead of Sense (or "on top of" Sense).
BTW, regarding Widgets: As I understand, I can run both HTC and "plain" Android widgets when using Sense, but I cannot run HTC widgets on non-sense launchers, right?
Thanks for the reply!
You can use ADW or LP, and I believe you're right about the HTC widgets, but I'm not 100% sure about that.
Yes, I installed LP and used it for a while, though eventually went back to Sense. the OS will give you the option to set either Sense or LP or any other launcher as the default action for the home button once installed. You can switch them by going into manage applications and press "clear defaults" for whatever launcher is set as the default and it will ask you again when you press home.

Thanks for a very practical and informative reply!
Alternatively, you should be able to flash the G2 ROM very soon (if you can't already) as we now have permanent root. That will give you the stock Android launcher.
It is a bit disappointing that I can't use the Sense widgets with Launcher Pro, but I'll get over it. The Sense dock is pretty, but useless compared to a loaded up LP dock with swipe actions.
"Launcher Pro +" adds its own sense like widgets which are very good.
Does anyone know if you can flash and reinstall sense fresh? The point being to get rid of all this bloatware that my carrier added my phone.

Why would you want to reinstall just Sense for that ? You can just disable the bloatware if you want, or flash a different ROM (e.g. if it's a Bell ROM then you can flash the standard ROM, see the dev forum for details).
Alternatively, I'm sure it will be very soon that someone will post up a way to flash the ROM from the G2, which doesn't have Sense in it.

[Q] Lost HTC Sense Widgets

I installed Launcher Pro and then decided to switch back to regular HTC Sense. In the process, it appears that I've lost all of the HTC Sense widgets, themes, and ability to expand to 7 screens.
I've tried going to settings/applications/manage applications/ and cleared data on the HTC Sense and rebooting. It just takes a few minutes and re-loads sense, but still no widgets, etc.
Is there an easy way to fix this?
If I'm forced to do a hard reset, can I do this while rooted with s=off?
Thanks
i had the same problem a while ago...... if i am not mistaken, clearing data in sense will make you have to do a factory reset to get things back the way they were. i dont remember what made me clear the data in sense but i think it was launcher related. since then, i dont set any launcher as default. i just let the picker pop up and i will chose from there.

I'm pretty sure clearing data in sense framework app is exactly why you can't get the sense widgets and themes. Those things are the "data" which you apparently erased. They are part of sense. A factory reset will get them back, and it won't mess with root or s-off.

[Q] Home Screen backup question?

I have a simple question, I'm currently on CM 7 nighty 7 and was wondering if it’s possible to back up your Home screen with all your Widgets and shortcuts with either an app or a software setting somewhere? With CM7 I normally just flash over on previous builds, but as many of you know, that sometimes problems happen for whatever reason and a full wipe is required or recommended. So with that being said, it can be a pain to have to always start from scratch on setting up your home screen shortcuts and widgets. Not sure if it matters but I have both ADW Ex and Launcher Pro, which both have backup settings but do not allow Widgets to be backup. Just trying to make it little easier if at all possible, Thanks.
Derek
It needs to be saved to the SD Card and widgets cannot be saved, which is why only the applications are able to be restored. In short, no there is no way. But even still, having all the applications atleast restored back to where you want them is a huge help.
Yes there is a way. There is an app called MyBackUp Pro. I use it to restore my homescreen. Everything is restored with the exception of the widgets. The widgets will be on the screen but "broke" so to say. I just remove the "broken" widget and replace it again.
This can be done though default ADW as you can backup and restore but as stated the widget has to be replaced. You don't need any special apps for it work normally its saved on root of your sdcard when you save it.

problem with keeping launchers as default..

I have tried home switcher and the likes to try to set go launcher, launcher pro and adw launcher. Tried to clear default manually. (Basically the same thing home switcher does).
But whenever i exit apps or even preferences. My phone prompts me to choose what launcher to use. I choose ex launcher pro. Tick of the default theme. And it still prompts me 2 minutes later.
I am not rooted. On froyo 2.2.1
Can anyone help choose and keep another launcher than htc sense?
Don't know, but for me after geting a new launcher(launcher pro), had hard time to move from sense, it's great.
But I just once selected the launcher pro as default, and phone has ever since asked to choose.
If i want to switch back to sense, how to do it? Only way i see is to instal another launcher to get the phone to ask what to use.
And haven't rooted my phone.

Uninstall launcherpro. Then Sense will take over.
getting back to sense is easy..
install yet another launcher to get to choose default. thats the hard and stupid way.
else.. settings/programs/ go set sense as the default
homeswitcher. which is the same. just takes a few steps off the process..
but how do i set another launcher as default for good, without home button sending me to choose default launcher all the time?
is it possible that an app has changed some settings?
can i freeze out sense or any other workaround, without rooting ?
I had this problem when I had Launcher 7 and ADW installed. I chose L7 to be my default and couldn't get ADW back. Then found out by going to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Application -> All and then choose Launcher Pro. Scroll down and you should see a section call Launch Default and click Clear Default. That should fix it.
I'm on CM7 so how you get to Application list may vary. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem, of the phone constantly asking what launcher to use when pressing the home button. I would pick my preferred launcher, check the box to use my selection as default. Then it would stay as default for a while, but "lose" the default fairly soon. This happened frequently, many times a day.
I tried clearing the default (both manually and using home switcher), uninstalling all but the stock Sense launcher (this was on Virtuous), and the problem just came back even after just installing one launcher (and it didn't matter which, I tried installing/uninstalling different ones). Something definitely "changed" to cause this problem (although I don't know what). It was fine for a while when I was on Virtuous, and then one day it wasn't. I was playing around with various launchers at the time. So I all can think is one of them somehow messed up the ability to keep the default.
The problem persisted until I flashed back to the stock ROM. Only other thing I can think of to try, is to clear dalvik and cache. Clearing those seems to fix some random problems, once in a while.

I had the same problem, and after reading tons about it online, it seems the only explanation is that one of your apps is interfering with the choice, it can be any app you have, even if it has nothing to do with a Launcher function.
What I did was backup all my apps (130+) to Titanium (I am rooted), then uninstall them all. I then proceeded to reinstall them by batches of 3-5. Until I pinned down the problem to Photoid Pro. I dumped it and ever since my Z has been working flawlessly on Zeam launcher.
I have read that there are several other apps that interfere as well, so you might have to do as me, uninstall, and reinstall until you can spot the culprit.

Can I backup my icon/apps layout in Titanium Backup or some other way?

So, I've been using Titanium backup (full paid version) on my phones and tablets for a while, and I LOVE it, but I can't figure out how to backup the layout of my icons with it.
On my old phones I used Launcher Pro, so when I restored my apps + data it would install LP and it's data (and it's backup), there-by placing all my icons where I had them (minus widgets), which was super easy and awesome. Loved it.
Well, I don't have a need for an aftermarket launcher on my Galaxy 10.1, and as it's just added processes, I don't want to use one. So, how can I back up my icon layouts (and widgets if possible, but I doubt it) on my home screens so that I don't have to manually place them each time I try a new ROM? And if this isn't possible in TB, is there another app I could use for this?
Much appreciated...

MIUI ROMs have this function built in.
You might also check out FileExpert and/or myBackupPro...but I don't think they'll have what you're looking for.

Yep. MIUI, pronounced "my U I" (my user interface). But if you haven't gotten into flashing ROMs yet, then you might not find what you're hoping for.
Here's a link, if you're interested in the literature. But a word of caution, if you screw it up...you might wish you hadn't tried.

Look around youtube for a tour of MIUI ROMs.

Anyone else know of an app that can do what I am needing?
Can you not use tb to backup desktop touchwiz launcher? Would that not backup the layouts as well?

Yes you can. Just tried it then deleted a icon and restored data which put the icon back .

That didn't work for me earlier. Do I have to have a specific app/rom to do that?
MyBackup Pro has an option to backup your home screen layout, it won't backup your widgets but atleast the placeholders will be in the right spot & it can restore all your apps shortcuts on the home screens!!
ADW will do that

What I did was open tb, find [descktop] touchwiz launcer in app list. It should be highlighted green. Then I just backed up like normal and closed tb, then deleted a shortcut icon off my homescreen and went back to tb, found touchwiz launcher again, pressed it and pressed restore and chose data only. Went back to homescreen and deleted shortcut was back.
Just incase you did somthing wrong

Isn't ADW a launcher, or can it run as just an app? I don't want an aftermarket launcher... :/

Never thought to back up the launcher, thanks for that trick. Wouldn't this be a problem if switching to different roms though if they use different launchers(like backing up a stock launcher on a touchwiz rom), correct me if im wrong.
I just tried this as well. On my Galaxy Note 2 it is called TouchWiz Home. When I restore it, it only restores the deleted pages, and icons, not the widgets. So, how do I backup the widgets?
