[TempFIX] For those GPS still suffer for locked - Vibrant General

Just wanna share with u guys regard my finding on how temporary fix the GPS issue. Just follow the step below:
1) Install the GPS test app from market.
2)Open the GPS test app and let it search for the GPS signal and locked it. (this step take few minutes.)
3) after get locked on the GPS test app and open the google maps. you now should be able to get GPS lock in few second and enjoy ur navigation.
my testing rom detail as below:
Sombionix nero beta3 rom
Baseband version: JL1
kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Hope this can help u guys and kindly share ur find out too with diff rom u have by the method I given.
Thanks.

Before anything, thank you very much for sharing with us.
But is this any different than actually waiting to get a lock on Maps? I mean if the GPS test takes "a few minutes" why not just wait for Maps to get a lock instead? I just want to clarify things.

Based on my find out, if just open the maps, it will nvr get locked. while using GPS test app, although still take few minutes but at least can locked the signal.

Running Axura 2.1 and my GPS never works. Attempted your method and no avail.

This method works for me, may be its just placebo effect, but still thanks a lot.

you could have got a lock with lbstestmode(*#*#3214789650#*#*) and then opened maps.

Funny thing is I was using nero 1,2,3 and the obsidian ROMs till now..but I just installed Master's latest AXURA 2.2.5.8. I flashed directly from nero 3 to axura 2.2.5.8 via rom manager without odining back to stock or anything..and magically my GPS locks now in 5-10 seconds.

My gps NEVER worked until I installed Axura 2.1 AND the JL1 baseband.
since then my gps works flawlessly.
it takes about 1-2 minutes to get a lock but then it works perfectly.
try flashing the baseband since AXURA 2.1 comes with JK6 if i'm not mistaken.

do you axura 2.2.1 source? what base is using? I do want to try also...

I don't mean to troll, but this isn't really a "fix," all it does is "prime" Google Maps/Nav so Google Maps/Nav won't give up if it can't find a lock in a set period of time.
There are 3 real "fixes" that exist:
1) Flashing to a newer modem (JL series, take your pick)
2) The hardware fix posted in General from plato which involves improving the contact on the GPS antenna
3) The software fix from the Captivate forums from Da_G that involves changing the jupiter.xml settings for a) removing post-processing and b) using "true" AGPS settings optimized for your network
There are "mini-fixes" that help improve GPS performance (changing SUPL server to supl.google.com:7276, disabling WiFi antenna to reduce EFI), but again these are not true fixes.
Aside from the 3 fixes above, the rest are really just beating a very dead horse.

I dont think its a placebo effect. My GPS was dead until I performed the hardware fix early last week. But even then GM didnt seem to want to lock until I got lock in GPS test first. Someone posted about it in the hardware fix thread. We may have found the hardware problem but apparently there is still a software problem . No matter... Ill take running GPS Test first over no GPS at all.

This method works. I posted about it in General about 2 weeks ago to see if anyone wants to test it but I didnt get any response.
Yes GPS test locks quickly with the JLX modems on the different roms. 8/9 birds within 20 meters in about 20 seconds..blah blah blah. But how many of you actually try to use it during navigation. It works for a while then goes nuts and thinks you are on a street 200 yards away. Sometimes it corrects itself, sometimes it doesnt. Either way it is not reliable.
If you run GPS test and get a good lock then switch over to Navigation. Set your destination. Look back to GPS test to make sure it is still lock then drive. You do not get the jumping around effect. Been doing this constantly for almost a month now without that jumping effect. The key is to make sure GPS test is locked on in the first place. It keeps Navigation from losing that lock and jumping around.

One thing, there are two GPS Tests. Both are nice apps, but for the best lock use the one developed by Mike Lockwood. Open it, start it, and when it locks simply go back home and select Google Maps.
The best true fix is the hardware one. Whatever you do with software is just improvements.

yup. been doing this method for quite a while now.

For me what works and give me a quick lock is going to the GpsRestore Application by Samsung let it restore settings. i don't wait for it to get a lock. I switch to Gpstest application and get a fix very fast most of the time. After that any application that use gps will lock fast.
Hope this helps!

Wow! I can't believe so many people are still spinning their wheels on GPS when a definitive thread which fixes it has been sticked for so long. Especially after someone posted a link to the thread with the fix in this thread.
Heck, the link to the GPS fix was even covered on TalkAndroid in the news section a while ago.

Im receiving my Vibrant on Monday... what can I do to limit the issues?

So im receiving my Vibrant on Monday, and from what I have read a lot of people seem to say that you should do a factory reset on it. Should I do this straight out of the box so I dont have to do it later on once everythings installed on it? And is there anything I can do to make the battery last a little longer? such as charge it up all the way, drain it completely, and charge it up again, and do this cycle three or four times or does it not help at all?
What I would like to know overall is what should I do straight out of the box to fix (if possible) the issues with the:
1. GPS (I understand the GPS and Compass issue are going to be fixed in the first OTA update, but until then can I do anything?)
2. Compass
3. Lag
4. Battery drain
5. Should I immediately do the factory reset, or wait and see if I have any issues?
From what I have read, it seems like 100% of people have issues with the phone, but maybe thats just because the people who dont have any issues with it are out enjoying the phone?
All help is extremely appreciated!!!!
C'mon, just enjoy the new phone.
jake...
exuse my most basic of basic questions. I am fairly new to the droid phones.
I see your question of problems with the Vibrant.
Well, you said GPS, and then compass
Well I know what GPS is, and I certainly know what a compass is.
HOWEVER, Not within the text of a phone. Is it simply a compass that is used by a GPS to function?? Again, excuse my bare bones knowledge guess. I should have PM'd you it is so silly. Maybe not
I would love to hear back from you. It sounds like you try to be one step ahead of the game. I would love it if you had the time to take to PM me...could you

i really want to. but i have had so many issues with phones that this time I really want to know if there is anything I can do to prevent issues in the future.
The simplest guide to happiness with your new Vibrant
Reset it out of the box
Root
Install SetCPU
DONE
You should use a black or dark background to reduce drain on the battery and you also have to give the battery some time to adjust. GPS should be fine, but if it's not you should do a reboot first and you should try increasing accuracy before doing anything else. I have my Vibrant and I don't need any of the "fixes" to get a solid GPS lock. Solid enough for now until Samsung issues an update so we can lock onto more sats. I've seen the latest beta perform extremely well, locking on 6 sats at a time with 10Ft of accuracy (moving).
I just got my Vibrant today and was using the GPS just fine without a master reset or anything. Didn't even know there was an issue lol

great! thanks for help. the only issue is the rooting part... i can root a phone if i wanted to no problem, but the only issue i have with rooting is voiding my warranty-my MyTouch was replaced three times under warranty-if i need to replace this phone for any reason I would like to keep my warranty.
now i just have a question tho, how do i increase my GPS accuracy? all i see are threads on 'fixing' it.
thanks for the help,

Increasing the accuracy number (not "accuracy" in the literal sense) can be done by accessing the LBS (location based services) menu. It's under Application Settings from there. The code for getting there is in all of the fix threads. Just increase the stock 50 number to 100 and it should lock a bit easier.
Root, I don't believe there is a way to unroot back to stock. Not 100% sure on that so someone else can correct me. Root would only be useful for SetCPU, the ability to take screenshots and other minor things. No WiFi tether is reliably working right now which is bothersome and one of my biggest reasons for rooting.

My GPS is ok at best. If I use the code, and it was't quite necessary, it wouldn't hurt it, would it.

it would not hurt it. if it did, you could just change the setting back to 50.
Wow. You can unroot. There is a working tether option. Very likely you will not have any issues outof the box. Many of us have no issues with gps. You can do a factory wipe immediately after logging into the phone,i just don't see the point (seeing as it just came from the factory).
Strongly encourage you to read the sticky thread.
Also, not sure I see the reason for installing SetCPU, right now, as there are no kernels for overclocking.

Enough satellites but no fix

Hello all,
I am using Froyo XXJPO on my Galasy I9000. My problem is, that I cant get a GPS fix. But I can see 9 satellites if I use a GPS test tool.
Any idea what I can try? Thank you.
Well this is a first, someone having a gps problem.....you tried any of the million suggestions already posted?

While it's true that GPS problem has been discussed at lengths, people normally complain about poor accuracy and intermittent fix.
OP here is talking about another problem which I now experience myself since upgrading to Froyo. Quite often, SGS sees plenty satellites with SNR above 30, but just doesn't use them. At the same time and place my friend's Nexus sees less satellites but gets a fast and sure fix with them. This seems to be a driver problem in Froyo, not a hardware issue.
Edit: Forgot to mention that SGS usually gets the fix eventually, it just takes up to 15 minutes sometimes.
No fix issues have been done to death as well. Normally sorted by dicking around with your supl settings in the hidden menu.
Gps is just ****e on this thing, hope one of the solutions works for you.

It was the first thing I tried as soon as this issue appeared.
Doesn't make much difference if any.
By the way, on Eclair GPS worked just great for me (with JM7, that is. Before JM7 it barely worked at all).
I got the exact same issue, I can see like 8-10 sattelites with plenty of +30db and can't get a fix. My TomTom gps from 3 years old only sees 4-5 but gets instant fix.
Before I was on JP2 and this didn't happen > it fixed fast and sees the same amount of sats.
However, I must say that accuracy is great, when I do get a fix, accuracy goes up to 16 feet within the minute ands stays that way.
can you look into the LBS settings and tell me what is the accuracy used?

Well, to both
LBS Menu: *#*#1472365#*#*
Standalone + "Hot Start" + Accuracy More than 15 + "Automatic" in SUPL settings.
Actually, it's now *#3214789650# (since Froyo or late Eclair ROMs)
I'm using accuracy 30 now. Was testing it with 50 some time ago with no noticeable difference.
Weird, and it was working before right?
Have you hard reseted the device prior and after the rom upgrade and cleared the caches?

Same problem here.
GPS was great and dead-on accurate on 2.1 (O2 UK official firmware) and now it rubbish (O2 official froyo).
This is not a hardware issue.
same problem here, just that there are no values in gps test (time is always 00:00 as well as all others and the compass is jumping back and forth.. the day before yesterday before i've had used faster fix it worked great =( ) anyone knows how to fix without reflashing?
Weird, I got the exact same firmware as a collegue and he gets a fix way faster than me, he even sees sats inside our officebuilding (I see none).
However, using the 3214789650 code and doing the Get Position test, he gets a weird orange text where I just get regular information.

JI6 GPS Files - How I fixed my GPS

Well, I was having issues with GPS in every JPY based rom.
I had great GPS in JI6, so I decided to make a CWM Update with all the JI6 GPS files.
But first I want to share what I found comparing a JI6 system dump, a JJ4 system dump and the files in the JM9 GPS Fix and the Vibrant JI2 GPS Fix.
I9000 JM9 GPS Fix
system\bin\gpsd\8c7fccef.0
system\bin\gpsd\66ca3eb6.0
system\bin\gpsd\803ca020.0
system\bin\gpsd\7651b327.0
system\bin\gpsd\c9dbfc2e.0
system\bin\gpsd\ddc328ff.0
system\bin\gpsd\ed62f4e3.0
system\bin\gpsd\f0b6e66f.0
The above files are identical in JI6, JJ4 and JM9
system\bin\gpsd\glgps_samsungJupiter => different in JJ4
=> equal in JM9 and JI6
Vibrant JI2
system\lib\libclientgps.so => doesn't exist in JI6 and JJ4
system\lib\libsecgps.so => equal in JI6 and JJ4
=> different in JI2
I suspect libclientgps.so is useless in our Captivates. I might be wrong about that.
Lastly we have
system\etc\gps.conf
I modified mine to an NTP Pool near my location:
NTP_SERVER=south-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
supl_host=supl.google.com
supl_port=7276
And added the two latest lines as suggested in some forums.
You might need to modify yours to another ntp pool near your location.
Well, I have done a CWM update, with all the JI6 GPS files. Flashed it, deleted GPS data, restarted the phone, and done a Position Test in LbsTestMode.
Here are my settings:
Session type : Tracking
Test mode : S/W Test
Operation mode : MS Based
Start mode : Hot Start
GPS Plus : On
Dynamic accuracy : On
Accuracy : 250
GPS logging : Off
Server SQDN Type : Custom
Server : supl.google.com
Server port : 7276
SUPL secure socket : Off
AGPS mode : Control plane
At first it found 10 sats. Then the list was reduced to 8 sats. It took around 3 minutes to get a lock with a 5 meters accuracy.
After that I tested the GPS with Ndrive and I got a lock in seconds.
I never could get a lock before flashing this. Maybe someone will find it usefull, so I'll attach the file.
I will test again tomorrow, while driving.
Come on, 188 views, 14 downloads and no feedback?.
That's because you started with wrong assumption: JI6 GPS 'works'. I've been on JI6 for many months now and the GPS is still crap. Please note:
1. Different Captivate behaves differently in GPS performance. One phone works while the other totally didn't work even on the same firmware and same settings.
2. Getting a satellite lock is far from solving the GPS issue on Captivate. I can get lock all day long but that doesn't mean it is useful GPS for me.
Please read Da_G's thread about GPS. He sums up the GPS issues in Captivate perfectly.
There is no guaranteed solution for our GPS yet (please refer to my #1 above).
You did't read the topic title right?. It says It fixed MY gps.
I tested it today driving and I got locks with 5 - 25 meters accuracy with good tracking.
I shared this hoping it can be usefull to someone else, as stated in the OP.
I didn't start with any wrong assumption, just did it because it worked for me before and wanted to share.

To each its own...the Perception GPS sucks for me as have been the case with pretty much all the fixes I have tried except for the Assonance GPS fix (a combination of 3 fixes) and the current Phoenix 2.0 was not too shabby.
Good job on the GPS stuff...glad you finally got it to work mate...I know it was driving you insane.

Thanks my friend, you're right, it was driving me insane ^^.
I'm happy Adam included my fix in the latest Phoenix.
So far my GPS is doing fine(most of the time). But it usually starts messing up after sometime. I am will to give it a try.
Either way like posted above it seems what works for one might not work for another. Could be a location thing.
But it is always good to have options. I too have been in a situation a time or two, three... that I could not get a lock or if I get a lock, even with 16 feet accuracy it still sucks when looking at the map. Just last night while driving on the highway it thought I was driving on the BestBuy shopping center. It cleared up after about 5 minutes. Today was nearly perfect. Go figure.
Thanks for letting us know what helped you out, it may help out someone else.
Edit: As I am a flash junkie I gave it a go. At my desk on the 4th floor of my 5 story building I picked up one satelite and sitting at my desk I am going 0 mph. With Da_G scripts in the same spot I picked up 2 satelites but was moving 2 mph sitting at my desk. Later I will test it out on the road.

I didn't have the extra time to mess with it and keep developing my rom. Awesome job!!

Did you edited the gps.conf file?.
The included one has the south america ntp pool.
Hi Whipon,
I got a very good result on JPY based ROM with this package. (Darky based custom ROM with GB #47 kernel)
I have changed NTP Server to north-america.pool.ntp.org .
Locking is quick, accuracy is very good.
thank you sooooo much
what port did you used?

Use faster fix to set your pool server, then use gps aids, clear agps in settings, then go outside with good signal, request update agps in settings, go back to main screen and wait for good fix, may take a minute or 2, after that you should subsequently get a fix in about 15 seconds

i'm trying to use GPS Aids but it said "The GPS Data Folder is not visible to "GPS Aids"
what should i do ?
What firmware are you using?
Your phone must be properly rooted (ie. having Superuser and Busybox installed). Any rooted kernel will do the trick.
Then, being on GPS AIDS main screen, press the menu button on your SGS and select "Setup".
Thanks Slap, this is very helpful especially for JWx firmwares that do not include angryGPS anymore.

Try the fix for GB: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750226
Hi,
My GPS is also not working. I did a very wide search about that isse and tried most of the things. But no luck. In previous stock roms, my GPS was working fine. But after switching to ICS, I couldn't get a fix. The interesting thing is when I tried to downgrade to GB, I still couldn't get a GPS fix. I'm totally confused about the problem.
Does anyone have any solution or idea?
Hi Guys, try to flash with different ROMs and see if the GPS works on other ROMs or not. Make sure the NTP server is having correct URL for your region. It is required for your phone to download LTO file, the same to XTRA server url.
For my case last time, it wont works on any ROMs I tried at all. And then I found out it is the GPS Antenna contact problem. I have fixed it by soldering trick (which voided my warranty that I am not really care after about 2 years of usage).
You can try to verify it by taking off the back cover, then use your finger to press on the upper part of the GPS antenna at the back of the phone. (the location is next to your speaker for I9000). IF it detects satellite when you pressing it, probably it is the hardware contact issue. Some of the owners fix that by putting a thick tape at the pressure point so that when they put back the back cover, it will give a pressure to make sure the antenna contact properly to the board pin.
Try search in xda regarding about the GPS hardware fix.
WARNING : Try it on your own risk. It is just my suggestion and you have rights not to try it. Good luck. :good:

I tried that. And also I applied the GPS fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1750226.
It views GPS satellites, but none of them are in use. I'm posting screenshots. Can you take a look at these?

First of all, thanks for your reply. I tried varios ROMs, none of them solved my GPS issue. But I'm pretty sure that I used GPS previously. There were no problems at the beginning. So I don't think that there is a hardware related problem. I noticed that problem after installing ICS (maybe it was before ICS, but I didn't notice it before).
Just to be sure, I also chekeched the GPS antenna (I found a guide about that). And it seems OK.
So I'm back to square one...
Note: It detects GPS satellites, but says that none of these satellites are in use. I also posted a screenshot in my previous reply.

try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043034
the issue is solved by applying a tape on the top egde of the gps antenna.works fine!
I tried, but applying pressure to that point changed nothing in my case.

for me it worked after applying a tape and putting the cover back on the phone,it also didnt't work when applying pressure with the fingers.I put the tape at the top and it worked immediately.

That's why it is in the sticky, could you imagine if every issue with someone's vs980 got posted here? You would have to read through many pages just to reach a specific ROM thread you were looking for.

Switch all location services off in settings. ie untick both gps satellites and wifi location. Then power off, reboot and switch them all on again. Use gps test (chartcross) to see if you can get a lock.
You can also reset agps data if it remains slow to lock.

I already tried all tips I'v found (FasterFix, manual update of gps.conf, A-GPS Reset/forced update, power off, reboot, using GPS Status and GPS Test). Getting a stable GPS lock is very funny.
As other, my GPS lock is not locking properly. When I get it, I lost it on the road without any reason...

I was wondering what stock ROM but that's fine.
Please check the thread attached and make sure you do a backup.
If not I'm wondering if you have a hardware issue.
Thanks but this fix was not helping me...
So, I decided to disassembly the G2.
I solved my GPS problem by adding some alumium on the GPS antenna. Opening the G2 back cover is very easy (see video on youtube).
Before I was getting a GPS Lock on 0 sat (20 in view).
Now, I'm getting a GPS Lock on ~8 sat !!!
My girl friend was able to use her G2 while driving ~40km without any lost of GPS. It was impossible before "my fix".
Does the baseband and radio/modem and that stuff affect the GPS?
I'm also having difficulty get a lock on
Curious fix - squeeze the top right corner of the phone and see if you get a lock on!
