USB tether for free??? - Epic 4G General

How the heck do you get USB tethering to work???
Again, coming from a Nexus I guess I'm spoiled in these ways but I figured the USB tether was going to work in the settings... it keeps erroring out saying my sprint login isn't valid.
Is there no way to get USB tethering to work without activating tethering on the carrier?

Assuming you're running on 2.1, you have 3 options:
1) get a 3rd party app like easytether or PDAnet which are free from the market.
2) upgrade to 2.2.1 (froyo) which has native USB tethering builtin for free.
3) install a custom 2.1 rom that supports USB tether.

Native tether works in froyo? :0

1) well ya, but software sucks.
2) 2.2 has it in the options but it doesn't work. it gives an error about sprint network not avail. this is what the nexus used and it worked great. id really like to be able to use it if possible!
3) like which one?

Why not root your phone and use wireless tether?

Lol I tried. If I run across something I'll let you know.
Sent from my shoe, I mean....Epic shoe... I mean Samsung Epic! http://mobilehighway.blogspot.com/

It is rooted.
The wireless tethering thing is crap because it goes into adhoc connect mode with very weak encryption methods. About 25% of devices can connect to that. It's junk.
pdanet works but just a pain to have to use software on both ends to have a tether when it's built into android. I would have thought someone would have a fix for this. It has to just be a configuration thing to not use sprint login crap.

If you are on 2.1 I recommend mobile ap..it offers infrastructure tethering and is free too. To me it works better than wireless tether.

When you say your xbox can't pick it up, are you implying that with native usb in froyo you can book directly to x xbox via usb?

I've been using the wifi tether app for a while now for 360, it works fine. did you try it with encryption turned on and with the correct network key??

I use...
I used the wired tether app on a rooted 2.1 phone. I like that it simultaneously charges the phone, which is very helpful when I'm on the road. However, you need to install a kernel that supports it.

Wireless tether

I rooted my Droid X and got the wireless tether app to work. My only question is if I use my phone to tether will any extra data charges show up on my account? I have the unlimited data package, but I don't have tethering on my account.

Thats because it is a Ad-Hoc type of wifi. There is still a known problem with windows 7 and ad-hoc networks though (you have to re-establish the connection every time you want to use it on the pc). If you are running xp/vista, you should have no problem reconnecting every time.
There ARE hacked versions of the Motorola Hotspot app that will allow true, non ad-hoc, Hotspot functionality, while still not having to pay for the package. I am using it on my X with Fission 2.1 ROM. TeamBlackHat released it.. search and enjoy.

Do note that VzW can still see your data usage (how much used) and data rate (I THINK they can see this), so they'll have a good idea that you're tethering when you're not supposed to (contract violation, essentially) if you do this too much.
If you're sneaking around VzW to use tethering without paying, then do it sparingly when needed, not excessively... unless you want your contract terminated and other penalties assessed. This isn't the same thing as voiding a warranty, after all. You're essentially pirating bandwidth from them by doing this. Not that I have much of an issue with that, just warning you so you know that they do take this seriously.

PDANet

can i use PDAnet on EB01 or will i get caught
I would think you would be fine. Issues, I believe, are with wireless tethering. PDAnet needs your USB plugged in. I could be wrong, though!
try it and see...
You dont need it w eb01. Theres a usb tethering option in network settings. Used it last night without error. I did however type **usbui in the key pad, change to modem, use qpst to verify @dun.vzw was removed

Sprint Hotspot Hack

I came from the evo and I remember there being a hack that would let you use the sprint hotspot for free instead of wireless tether, is there a way or a fix in the making for this, cuz I prefer that app over the wireless tether app. Thanks!

Speaking of Wireless Tether... I notice the setting in there for security (wireless encryption) but I can only turn it on or off, not select the type (i.e. WPA2) Am I missing something or is it just automatic selection?
Its like that and you can't change it..I'm not sure if the updated experimental version has it or not..its on their website if ya wanna check it out

It only allows you to use WPA/WPA2-PSK as the encryption method. Personally I think the wireless tether is a pretty good app, In addition to the encryption it gives you the option of using Access control, to deny or allow connections to the phone.

Wireless Tether

Is there a way to have our Xoom connect to the wireless tether ad-hoc instead of having to uses native 3G mobile hot spot app on fascinate. I know when I had the galaxy tab someone made a wpa.supplicant (think that's how it was spelled) file to put somewhere in /system/? So it could connect to phones using wireless tether.

Only if your Xoom is Rooted can you connect to Ad Hoc after a minor hack.
Root your phone and use wireless tether 3.0

As everyone else as said before, the only way right now is through rooting.
Root your phone. It's easier and you can share with things other than your xoom then.

Have any of you been able to connect to an ad-hoc connection with a xoom? Most of the connections have been made through handsets that do not use ad hoc mode.

What "minor hack"?????
His phone is rooted already if hes already using the Wireless Tether App from the market.
He just needs to install the newest beta which has infrastructure mode instead of Ad-Hoc, and the Xoom will identify it without any hacks on the Xoom.

Thanks for the input, but these apps are phone specific. I'm well aware of the wireless tether apps, both for root and the experimental 3.0. I've tried just about everything out there and can't get the Xoom to see my CDMA Hero running AOSP 2.3.3. Even the bluetooth tether will not connect. My laptop sees it fine, my Xoom sees an EVO that uses wireless tether. I'm afraid I may have to ditch the old Hero...
You have used 3.0 pre 4¿ that's what works for me

Wired tether 1.4 works for me, except on linux - even though it appears that stock attempts to use rndis (dmesg on my linux box shows that it momentarily recognizes a rndis device), it doesn't work the same way that Rodderik's rndis support worked in his EC05 kernel... windows auto-detects it just fine, though

Hotspot hack isn't as nice
I like keeping track of how much data I use while tethering. Wired and wireless tether lets me do that. Playing MW2 and BF3 over 3G is data intensive, so I like to keep an eye on it. Plus, those are things the Sprint knows wouldn't be coming from the phone normally, so limiting their data use would be a good idea.

No can do. The PC doesn't have wireless. Plus it's nice to charge the phone and only use one radio at a time instead of the big drainer of EVDO and Wifi going full bore.
